Bingung nyari ide skripsi?

Any Issue with a list of 100″

This week our class focused on WTS 1.3—Investigate and Think Critically: research, manage, and evalu

This week our class focused on WTS 1.3—Investigate and Think Critically: research, manage, and evaluate information and solve problems using digital tools and resources. The ISTE Wikispaces page on Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making suggests that students:

identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation

plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project

collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions

use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions

All of these bullet points are very pertinent to nursing education and as I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, critical thinking is a big buzz word for our discipline. The nursing process covers all the aspects mentioned above: assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, intervention, and evaluation. Nurses must identify and define the problems their clients’ present with by collecting and analyzing data with which to make informed decisions or diagnoses. Nurses investigate, plan, and manage activities around client needs and use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore solutions for clients. In short, nurses use critical thinking all the time!

This week we were also told to become familiar with online mapping software for brainstorming. It’s no surprise that cognitive mapping has been linked to improved critical thinking. Samawi (2006) reports on the effect of concept mapping on critical thinking skills in a quasi-experimental study of baccalaureate nursing students. The results suggest that concept mapping triggers critical thinking which guides the student to engage in meaningful learning. The mind maps the students created showed more complexity over time, allowing the researchers a means to evaluate the students’ evolving critical thinking skills. There are many free online mind-mapping tools available: Webspiration, Bubbl.us, and Mindmeister are a few. I signed up for Mindmeister and found it to be fairly intuitive (after a short video tutorial) although somewhat cumbersome to use. Feedback from classmates indicated that Bubbl.us had limitations as well. The Mindmeister tool allows for real-time collaboration showing each users work in a different color so you can track what’s happening. The maps are importable and exportable to other formats, allowing integration to a blog or other sites you may have.

It’s important to remember that critical thinking affects all forms of communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Technology can enhance communication, but can too much technology be detrimental to critical thinking? A study at UCLA by Greenleaf (Wolpert, 2009) indicates that “as technology has played a bigger role in our lives, our skills in critical thinking and analysis have declined, while our visual skills have improved.” Learners have changed as a result of exposure to technology; reading for pleasure, which has declined among young people in recent decades, enhances thinking and engages the imagination in a way that visual media such as video games and television do not, Greenfield said. Greenfield recommends a “balanced media diet” in order to develop a variety of skills. No one medium is good for everything. I agree. As a non-traditional baccalaureate student a few years ago, I was introduced to mind-mapping much later in life than most. I find it a difficult task at best. Add in the challenges of new online technology and I find it overwhelming. If I must create a mind-map, I am probably going to utilize post-it notes and colored pencils. Let me apologize ahead of time to my instructors…

To bring our future to reality, we must envision it, draw the picture in our mind, see it, and live as if we were in it.

More and more people are realizing the powers of visualization.
tons of books have been written about this, acknowledging the power of visualization in achieving ones goals.
Mind maps are, by definition, is a graphical method of taking notes.

The visual basis of them helps one to distinguish words or ideas, often with colors and symbols.

They generally take a hierarchical or tree branch format, with ideas branching into their subsections.

Mind maps allow for greater creativity when recording ideas and information, as well as allowing the note-taker to associate words with visual representations.

Mind maps and concept maps are different in that mind maps focus on only one word or idea, whereas Concept maps connect multiple words or ideas.

Mindmeister is my pick on mind mapping software.
It combines online and offline capabilities, enabling you to work on your ideas and concepts on and off the web.
It has apps for the i-phone connecting you to their server while on the go too!
My favorite aspect of this though is the way that you can do this as a group, a bit like Google docs and Microsoft Sharepoint on how you can work collaboratively on a single idea or project.

There are other mind mapping tools out there of course, like mindjet, www.mindjet.com, and freemind, mindgenius but mindmeister is my pick.

Whats yours?

I’ve just spent 20 minutes working on the beginnings of a draft IA for the futuremuseum website.

For this, I used an online mind-mapping tool called Mindmeister, which I’ve used successfully with loads of clients before.

Mind-mapping is ideal for sketching out information architecture because the node-type visual approach appeals to people far more than text; also it is extremely easy to move nodes around, try new things, infer links and so on. Mindmeister adds to this functionality by providing the means to collaborate – once I’d drafted this top-level navigation, I just sent Dan the link via Skype for him to look over and amend.

The actual components of the IA are simple at this stage – to get them I just spent a few minutes browsing a couple of museum websites and compared / contrasted between them to extract the common components. We’ll develop this as we go (feel free to bookmark the direct link to the map!) – it’ll be interesting to see which bits change as we go along.

If you’ve got any ideas for missing bits (I should add: feasible missing bits!), please let us know in the comments!

Hello. You may notice there is a large stain on my shirt. That’s because my face melted off. Y

Hello. You may notice there is a large stain on my shirt. That’s because my face melted off. You see, I have discovered a new reason to live. And this isn’t love… Celine Dion can keep her crappy love songs. It isn’t success; I’m still a bum and still need to bathe. No, this is something far more awesome.

Yesterday, I began playing Brütal Legend.

Seriously, this game is the best thing since Grim Fandango… which isn’t all that surprising, because Tim Shafer made both of them. Between rocking the Deuce and drooling over Ophelia, the wife and I managed to give the sons a bunch of new toy cars (purchasing their love for another parental-appreciation cycle), have dinner with friends, and play DnD until the wee hours. Well, not quite wee… unfortunately, Miss Scionical had some issues with dinner and an over-active gallbladder, and we had to call it short. I, on the other hand, had quaffed an energy drink before to make sure I was aware enough to run my game. I don’t drink these things often so they tend to have rather profound effect on my six-foot-eight frame. Have you ever seen a three hundred and fifty pound man jiggle? I assure you, it is pure hilarity.

What is this leading up to? Two things: Brütal Legend is cooler than me, you, your mom and Amway combined, and that I apparently like doing blog entries at the last minute while sleep deprived. We all have our process, right?

Monday we began talking about the basics of pre-production for our campaign world, of gathering the ingredients to come up with something awesome. Today we are going to put that into practice and start cooking some cool.

Brainstorming

I am gonna begin this with a little free association. In the center of the page, I just wrote game world and then scribbled anything that came to mind. Apparently, Jack Black is hitting me in a lot of these writing, because some concepts came to me right away. I want to do something heavy on the Titan lore, and I want the legendary weapon of the world (the Excalibur) to be an axe. Other things start popping out for little reason; I don’t want any gods around, meaning that the divine classes have to interpret things without any guidance from up high… it also means I need to figure out why the divine source even works. Also, I think it would be wicked for people to have wings (I’ve been seeing a lot of ads for the new MMO Aion lately). There are some other things, but the stuff mentioned illustrate what I am getting at. Just by randomly writing concepts down, I’ve pulled from things that currently interest me to include in the world. Before I started this, I just vaguely knew I wanted to make a world. Now I have some core concepts and even some ideas on a name… though I don’t know if Badass Land of Super Rocking Awesome is good for fantasy these days. Here is the full page of free ass here.

Quick interruption: if you have a name for your world already, rock on! Having that will certainly cement things in your mind’s eye – hell; it is basically a blinky for the mind-eye. If you come up with a name like “Vashin” or “Necovia”, you will probably be making dark sinister worlds as a central theme. Names like “Zureya” or “Lytha” give an idea of more airy spaces, either angelic or fairy themes may be prevalent and that is a great starting point! If you don’t have a name for your proto-world, do not sweat it. Through the process you will pick your brain so much that you will eventually hit on the right name for you. When you have that name, whether it was your starting point or not, turn it over in your head and say it a few times, try iterations of the name in different syllables until it feels perfect for you. Make that fucker your bitch. The name has to resonate with you and be something you are happy with, so make sure you think it is cool.

Next, using a lot of the concepts from my Free Association, I begin to mindmap. This is a slightly more structured process than whacking my brainmeats off on paper at random. Making connections from point to point ties the elements tightly together, and keeping the entire work spread out gives me a good view of what is missing and what is overabundant. When doing a mindmap, don’t worry right now about fleshing anything out! All you need to do right now is pop down more ideas, and tie some loose ones together. Run this stuff through your head, and if it doesn’t sound cool to you, toss it! This is your fantasy. Let your mind run free and see where it leads you. If you see Tijuana, you might want to stop.

You can see from my brainstorming (the entire mindmap is located here), I started with just the name of the campaign world that I currently like (Korva). From there I’ve branched to smaller categories: character, geography, history, and culture. This could just as well be Character, Culture, Die Hard Quotes, and Cheesecakes… the information you put here is just what you are using to spark more ideas. A large draw of any campaign setting to me is how it involves the characters, so that is where I start. In this case I am going to forgo class concerns (for the most part) and throw out some bones based on Power Source. Divine characters have a lot to be worried about: their gods are dead and mystics are taking over the show. It certainly seems like many members of the church are corrupt as they actively steal every bit of titan power they can and use it to keep the miracles coming. Of course, not every member of the clergy knows this… in fact, the vast majority (player characters involved) will think they are doing the right and fighting the good fight. Arcane casters are Korva’s version of rock stars. They do just about anything by tapping directly into the power of the Titans, and a few have started titan cults to further hunt the lore.

Continuing on, you can see more of the choices I made for Korva, from the general type of world to where population centers are located. I didn’t really go into a lot of detail here, and in a lot of ways this is just a pretty and linked up outline. What you are seeing here is the change of ideas between my first brainstorming (the free association) and the mindmap. There still isn’t a lot of detail here. We are still early in the creation in our world, and things are sure to change.

Now we come to our initial outline. Like above, I am not going to go over the entire work line by line for the sake of space. The outline continues the process of refinement and brainstorming a third time and you should clearly be able to see the differences between the outline and the mindmap, not to mention the free association exercise. The outline is mutable and very much a guide to how we are going to tackle building Korva. Notice how almost everything was expanded upon, and many ideas were either introduced or radically altered. This outline will see hundreds of such revisions by the time we are done, and makes one hell of a Table of Contents should we need it. Keep in mind there is no real wrong way to outline, just make sure it keeps things organized for you and aids in the elusive process. Do what you are comfortable with, and what works for you.

The last thing I am going to talk about is the hook. I came up with a hook I was satisfied with for Korva before I sat down and started brainstorming. The concept revolves around the godsouls, shattered fragments of the dead gods that bind with mortals that possess them. Each domain of the fallen gods defines a few different godsouls, representing the god’s fragmented power. These provide bonuses for characters that wield them, and their possession is a major component of the world. My hook could have been anything though, and I could still add a few more in… there is more than enough to go fishing for a hook (how many times do you hear that?). Just keep in mind, a hook is more than just a sweet chance to make some fucked up compound words. It’s a system that a lot of your world is going to depend on. It has to be more than just dragoneyes, lichstorm, or puppytrumpet. It has to do something… and it has to be fucking awesome.

Did you get all that? It is high time I got back to Eddy Riggs before bad shit destroys Ironheade. You want to talk about a world with a powerful hook? Each land in Brütal Legend is drawn as if to be a heavy metal album cover. Forget Jack Black for a minute, fuck him. This world is bizarre and completely impossible but – and this is the million dollars but – it is presented with such skill, precision, and detail that you buy it. Hook, line, and 13-string fretless bass you fucking buy it. It pulls you in and immerses you, and it does so because one person set there and lovingly put all the pieces together to make so it powerful. If you are looking for a great of the most unlikely universe, shred the fuck out Brütal Legend. It will melt your face off, too.

Peace out people, come back Friday when we tackle teaching new players how to game.

There’s nothing I like better than finding a really expensive program (say, £200 worth) legite

There’s nothing I like better than finding a really expensive program (say, £200 worth) legitemately available for free. Lovely.

Better still, this one feeds in to my love of dreaming planning, which I tend to do a great deal of – especially come the New Year. You can keep all your parties and the endless flowing booze – just let me loose on a free mind-mapping program and I’m as happy as a pig in muck.
By the way, whilst I appear to be veering off on a tangent, let me continue with a fabulous little piece of advice I picked up a long time ago, that finally science is also catching up with – if you’re going to make grand dreams and want them to work, then also list the likely obstacles you’ll encounter on the way. Doing this increases your chances of success unbelievably! If only more self-help books mentioned that point! Tsk.

Anyway, back on course, if you were to pay for Mindmapping software, no joking you’re often looking upwards of £200. Granted, several of these programs have lovely added extras like full intergration with MS Office etc but not all of us need nor want that (I don’t).
I just like to mindmap my businesses, my relationships, my diary and my things-to-do – oh, and the contents of the books I read (It helps me remember them!)

Therein I was kindly sent a link to FreeMind and I’ve been using it extensively for more than a month now, with great success. Completely free and with more than enough options to keep me happy, I thought I’d better get off my jack-sie and share it with you.

Oh, and one final tip – when you download it and you get a page requesting your details – feel free to ignore it – the program downloads just fine without all that needing to be filled in

Here’s to MindMapping heaven and a very successful 2010

Well, as I just mentioned to someone who asked about the cruise…

“Cruise went BEYOND my wildest expectations, met a ton of people, and must admit, the Cruise Ship environment was a GREAT bonding ‘framework’ as we spent those hours together, sharing, learning, and getting to know each other well…” (Me, 2009)

So as I got this Tweet via TweetDeck (as again, I’m trying to ILLUSTRATE the value of the medium to some stragglers in my FB list…)

For years people have used what have become known as ‘question kits’, some by planning them others just by ‘doing’. When I am running a study skills workshop I will always get the students to consider the questions that they need to ask. Eventually they will arrive at the common:

When?

Where?

Who?

Why?

What?

How?

If you apply this to most questioning situations you will see how the application works effectively.

Question Kit used in study skills workshops

Paul Foreman has used a similar idea which I really like as well…

Solution finder by Paul Foreman

Paul’s solution is a Visual Map of ‘how to find a solution’ using the same questions.

Watch the news and see people being interviewed, the questions are the same. Listen to a Crime drama on the radio and the questions are the same. We all use these questions when we are trying to find the answers to problem, question, how or when something needs to be done.
