Happy Thanksgiving!

Boys WILL be boys, you know. No matter what you tell them or how much trouble they may get into….

Sunday after church while the Hunter was fixing lunch, Big Brother and Mini-me were playing their version of soccer in the hallway. Something that has happened many times in the past with no ill effects… but somehow, Mini-Me tripped, fell, rolled, smashed or whatever and his forehead came into contact with the stair railing support post…the hard, sharp-edged, corner no less.

You know how head wounds bleed? Well, poor little Mini-me was bleeding like a stuck pig. The Hunter got it cleaned up enough to look at it, and sure enough, it was going to need stitches. It was about 3/4 of an inch long and clear to the bone. Little Mini-me did great and didn’t even cry.

Like Judi at Green Fairy Quilts who had a similar incident this last week and posted about it here,  Mini-me and I ended up at urgent care for stitches. That is AFTER we all ate lunch (I have been in enough doctor’s offices and ERs to know we were in for quite a wait…). Once we finished, I packed up four slices of homemade pumpkin bread, which Mini-me swears makes EVERYTHING better and heal quicker, and off we went to the local urgent care. We sat for a while, Mini-me ate his punkin bread, and we both sewed some hexagons, and finally got in to see the doctor.

The cut sure didn’t slow Mini-me up, as he had all the staff in stitches with his comments and his humor. They put lidocaine on a cotton, taped it to his head, and let us marinate in that for a while. By the time they got back in to the room to work on him, “burrito-ed” him up in a blanket so he couldn’t squirm as bad, and started to work, the wound was pretty well numb. The only time it hurt a little was when they were injecting more lidocaine into the interior of the wound (think dentist and numbing your tooth/jaw to work on a tooth…YUCK!) and Mini-me winced and said it hurt. His little eyes got red and big with tears, but he NEVER cried and later was very proud of the fact that he didn’t). Mini-me got a little worried, though, when he saw the curved needle they used for the actual stitching, but fortunately, it didn’t hurt at all, and he was great.  The doc said most adults aren’t even that good!

He had three stitches total, so not as bad as it could have been. They even put a really cool band-aid with spider webs and spiders on it. Mini-me was thrilled!

Unlike Judi at Green Fairy Quilts, I didn’t carry my camera with me to the doctors’, but did get pics of Mini-me and his stitches today before and after we took the band-aid off.

Here is a pic with the band-aid on – notice also the stair rail in the background…see those sharp, squared off edges? One of those, except down at the bottom, is what he ran into. Thankfully he takes after me and has a hard head.

The next picture is more of a close-up. As you can see, the scar, if any, will be up high enough that it won’t show much at all.

I told Mini-me and Munchie that it was just like sewing a quilt…thread and a needle…and better than using a hair from a mule’s tail like Ma did in Ol’ Yeller!

Busy day, busy week…should go to bed already tomorrow another looong working day, but wanted to write sg before.

Today I spent my day with the mini-me Héloise – like most of the days.  She’s 16-months-old, and I’m her full-time nanny. Today I passed my limits, I wanted to test her, and just for fun, I tried sg: I got into her little play-park thing in the room, with the bars on. And started to behave like HER. Just like. Well, to let you know how SHE is like, well, if she’s in, sometimes she gets bored, so starts throwing out things, screaming “maman, mamaaaan”, and so on…but she’s rarely there anyway (only for pee-emergency – for me of course, she is in advance with a diaper:) and when her 7yo bro is around). Sooo, I started my little performance with mamaaaaan-screamings and so on (ooh, needless to mention that we were alone…no witnesses needed for such a scene), and she came over to me, and then sg unexpected happened. Her infantile/naughty/ready to do some silly baby-like action look changed into sg mature, she started to estimate me, and I saw her thinking hard. Some wrinkles of concerned worry appeared on her forehead, and she started to speak – ok, as she cannot yet, started to imitate it:p anyways, asked me “booboo?” meaning whether I had a booboo, I hurt myself, that’s why calling out for my mommy, then I couldn’t help going on with my perverse game: I told nooooo and started to throw out things, toys, like a little spoiled bored girl. And she was looking at me, like frozen, and unable to do anything. I SAW her in the exact state that I usually watch her from HER present place, with the same impotent outsider watch. (she even forgot to close her mouth being so amazed…here I couldn’t help but let a little laugh out). And then I had a thought. What if…. What if this whole baby-kid-adult thing is a huuuuuge fraud?? What if they just pretend not to understand when “Nooo, we don’t throw the food on the floor if we don’t want to eat it”, or “Don’t shout, now we are going out and cannot take doudou (toy) out with us” etc. THEY KNOW it quite exactly, and they are just too smart. They know that we think that they don’t know:) and even if we would know what they know, we wouldn’t believe it that they are able to know:) So like this, they can skip some difficult years of obidence, hard work, and rules-following. They are smart enough to know that they can get away with whatever, no matter what..just because they are little, tiny, good-smelling and cute. And after they have grown up, they can think back and tell “ohh, those golden years, when I didn’t have to listen to anyone, not like today when I have be at work by time, and smile at people I don’t like, or wear high heels even if I hate them (just to make my short legs look longer)”. Babies don’t have to worry. That’s why they don’t have wrinkles:D ok, and also for some tiny biological reasons.

So let’s just think about it: the babies are just mini-me-s, no wonder!!!

The kids’ cousin, RJ, came to visit the other day. He has taken up deer hunting with a bow, and the Hunter told him not to get any camo clothing as we had enough to outfit him, so he came out to pick up some clothes. The Hunter wasn’t home from his business trip yet, so the kids kept RJ entertained….

I don’t know about the kids, but I think RJ was wore out!

Well, we did it! Woo hoo!

One problem – notice how unhappy Munchie looks? You know how brothers are….Mini-me was goofing around and broke the stem off Munchie’s pumpkin. See that stem-less, naked top? Munch was desolate….I had tried hot glue but the pumpkin was too moist. When she wouldn’t even smile for the camera, I had one of those “lightbulb” moments – I had done research a couple days ago on pumpkin carving and remembered that toothpicks could sometimes be used to “mend” a broken part of a pumpkin when you were carving them. So I took the stem and punched a little hole up into it, then punched a little hole into the center of the top of the pumpkin, inserted a toothpick (and another to tighten it up) into both, and Wa-La! a healed pumpkin with a stem!

Now look at her…. a little bit of a change in attitude for sure! LOL. She is back to posing like she normally does when a camera is pointed at her. And notice the pumpkin? Looks great!

I will show you what I used in a minute to do the carving, but for now the kit I bought included patterns. The kids each picked out one. Mini-me picked out the cool looking spider and Munchie first picked out the one with the horse (the headless horseman, but she didn’t notice that, just wanted a horse). Notice the size of Munchie’s pumpkin? No headless horseman was going to fit on the munchie pumpkin! Her second choice was this cat pattern which I still had to reduce to 60% of original size to get it to fit!

So this is “Meow”, named after Munchie’s white stuffed kitty she has had since birth.

Here is Mini-me’s spider. He doesn’t have a name as far as I know.

Now I am sure you remember my frustration with carving/cutting pumpkins from THIS post….as I said, I did research after that debacle. You  can use a dremel tool (if you have one and don’t mind a big mess) or you can buy little kits to make carving easier.  I had seen some on-line by the Pumpkin Masters and ended up finding and buying one of these at Wal-Mart Friday – the Pumpkin Masters Carving Party Kit.

I can’t recommend a pumpkin carving kit enough. This made all the difference in the world, and I am now one happy mama (you know what they say, if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!).

By the way, if you want to see some really cool pumpkins go visit the Pumpkin Masters or PumpkinGlow.com. Or just Google “pumpkin carving” and you will be amazed at the incredible images you see! COOL!

On a “quilty” note - I notice these patterns would make really cool Halloween trapunto or applique patterns or even quilting patterns on a Halloween quilt…..hmmm. Another project….just what I need!

The Orange Film Adverts really have become part of the cinema experience over the past few years now. Wondering when it is eventually going to change after months and months of the same advert, telling you to switch off your mobile phone. So I thought I would have a little trip down memory lane and pick out my top 10 of the adverts. This could be amusing and annoying, having a look back through the adverts which you do talk about a lot. It is very good to see the actors allowing their movies or parts to be made fun of in jest.

Which is your favorite?

It is that time of year! We had bought a couple of pumpkins from the farmer’s market a few weeks ago for each of the kids to carve. Yesterday we were gifted with four more, and since it is almost the end of October, something needed to be done with them.

It was supposed to rain all day today, the kids and I thought it would be a great day to carve our pumpkins. Mini-me and Munchie each picked the one they wanted to carve and I started in on them. 

I don’t know what is up…if I am getting old, or all the knives in my house are dull…or I need to go buy a machete (Mini-me would be thrilled with a huge sword!)…..or I need to wait till the Hunter gets home…. I just dont’ remember pumpkins being that hard to cut (maybe that is because I haven’t done it since I was the kids’ age and my mom or dad probably actually did it for me!). I thought about going downstairs and gassing up my trusty Stihl chainsaw, but that probably would have made a mess on the carpet. So I perservered and sawed on those puppies till my arm about came off. And that was just to get the tops off of two of them!

Here are the two pumpkins with the cap’s cut and also cleaned out. The big one is Mini-me’s and the little one is Munchie’s. I told them they were going to have to wait until daddy got home or I did some research on the internet before we put faces on them!

And here is Munchie with the pumpkins…and then what does brother do?

So, what to do with the other pumpkins? Mom had to cut one more up – then we baked it to make pumpkin puree for pies or bread….

Then I got to puree it in my blender. I thought I got a picture of that, but obviously didn’t as it didn’t download! I had help chopping it up, so let’s blame my forgetfulness on that…

Above is what we did with two cups of the pumpkin – made Mini-me’s favorite, pumpkin bread. He was in absolute heaven, and I can’t even begin to tell you how many pieces he ate before bed.

One thing I noticed about this pumpkin was that it wasn’t as orange as what comes from a can. See how tannish-yellow it is instead of orange? This is fairly close to the real color also. I really don’t know if this is because of the type of pumpkin or what. I have no idea what variety any of these were as we bought all of them. The kids and I want to grow our own next year…we can compare then.

Total we put up 6 cups of pumpkin in the freezer for pies and other goodies later and the two cups that went into the bread. 8 cups of pumpkin puree out of one pumpkin is not too bad!

There was only one problem – we still had leftovers (mmmm, doesn’t that look good? NOT!)

My mom’s sister, Janey, always had roasted pumpkin seeds this time of year as she always had pumpkins she cooked and grew (from what I remember anyway). I was young and didn’t like them at the time – or wouldn’t try them, can’t remember which, but I thought it would be fun to try it with the kids.

We washed and cleaned up the seeds as much as possible

and then set them out to dry on cookie sheets –

They really are pretty slimy. It will probably be tomorrow afternoon before they are dry enough to roast.

 I will let you know how it goes and how everyone likes them….

There’s an autobiography of Mini-Me coming out. Verne Troyer, the pint-sized actor who appeared in the Austin Powers movies, says he is writing his “memoirs.”

Troyer says a substantial part of the book will be devoted to his Amish upbringing. According to Troyer, his parents still don’t “use electricity or drive cars.”

Been thinking about launching a new website for the Honda/Acura brand. It’d be something similar to a s3 magazine in terms of feature cars, latest news from the Honda brand and a forum for exclusive members. By exclusive, I mean you have to be voted in by the appearance of your car. Those rejected would be given a summary statement on why they weren’t accepted. In the end though, the admin would have to make the final judgment.

It’d be cool, cause we’d have t-shirts for sale, stickers, shit like that. I’d have a military style ranking system. Of course, Officer ranked members would be exclusive members, admins and mods. Monthly contests to earn a higher rank faster than getting a certain post count to unlock different areas of the forum and/or ROTM(Ride of The Month).

I have some other ideas in my head and what not. Dunno if this would be a good idea, but it would definitely keep the trashy looking cars out of the forum and all the hate. It’d make for a tighter community and all that type of neat shit.

Feel free to put your input on this if you have any, positive or negative. I don’t know jack-shit about doing something upto this caliber. Any help would be cool as well.
