<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Every time I want to buy something, I intuitively know what I am going to purchase. If I could only leave it there, shop and be happy! Alas, no! Rationality sets in and I start backing my choice with a range of well-chosen expert’s advice.</p>
<p>Maybe it’s the German in me. There is a whole fund in Germany dedicated to the testing of each and everything from kid’s pyjamas to life insurance leading us all into utter confusion. I suspect the whole thing is only set up to make us all buy not only one but three articles, so that we can’t go wrong.</p>
<p>As little as perfectionism helps in art – apart from creating perfect products, of course, that might be as boring as Cindy Crawford without her mole – as little does it help  – and that’s new to me – to aspire to being perfectly equipped.</p>
<p>Stand’s the reason, really, since there can only be choices, different alternatives for a range of different demands, situations and so on. But I was convinced, so far, that if only I could get enough info, I’d make the right choice.</p>
<p>(Directing Rule #1: Your work day consists of choices. “Right” and “wrong” are relative. Get used to it.)</p>
<p>For example, I only needed to learn about the shotgun microphone NTG-2 from Australian producer Rǿde to know that that was the one for me.</p>
<p>Until I read the reviews.</p>
<p>And still I thought it was a great choice: good, but not as expensive as the Sennheiser 416, maybe not quite as good, but better than…</p>
<p>Three evenings spent in front of the computer screen, tight neck muscles and a cramp in the mouse scroll hand later, I realized that my intuition would carry the choice. As soon as I can spare the 300 euros for mic, mount and wind protection, I’ll order the NTG-2.</p>
<p>Unless I’ll read a few more reviews of blimps and dead cats, check whether Rycote isn’t preferable to Rǿde. And what about Audio Technica, Azden and Beyerdynamic…?</p>
<p>Did I mention that before choosing the mic with help from the reviews I had to choose the reviews?… In case you want to skip that step and are looking for tight neck muscles, have a look at these:</p>

<p>Tilos lies under dramatic rain clouds. The passengers in the bus hold their breath not to interfere with the filming. They are probably thinking: “Better not upset those documentary-filmmakers. Regardless of what they say, the material might end up in the finished film.&#8221; Outside, olive groves and harvested pumpkin fields whiz by.<br />
At Eristos Beach, Pavlos takes over commentary and tour. First, we film the “Lake of Eristos”, the mega pool of water that covers the whole road after every substantial rainfall, and the island bus mimicking an amphibian vehicle. The new museum for the dwarf elephant bones at Charkadio Cave might not yet be opened but there’s nothing to keep Pavlos and me from an architectural tour in 7 Beaufort wind. We admire the threatening clouds over Turkey as well as the panoramic view from Livadia’s harbour mole. Pavlos has a tyropitta, and in front of the kafenion four elderly Greek gentlemen play with a meowing toy cat while a real-life cat looks on, bemused.<br />
Just your normal 10 a.m. winter bus tour, really. </p>

I had an idea for doing a series of podcasts on travel photography and used Disneyland as my first podcast. I really hate the &#8220;kodak&#8221; shot which tend to be very boring images. So I took several of my favorite shots from the park, added video and a voiceover to give an idea of what can be done with very little effort on the photographers part and without annoying the rest of the family with the &#8220;wait here for a minute&#8221;.  I never pursued the podcast any further but one of these days I might goof around some more with it. Video was alot more work than I thought it would be and between gigs, kids and life, I just dont have alot of time to good with it. </p>
<p>I used iMovie on my Mac to make this flicks and kept things simple. I used two different video cameras, a Sony Hi8 and a Sony MiniDV. Neither are state of the art even then but they were useable and still are but look pretty low quality compared to the new HD rigs.</p>
<p>So here is my first attempt at making a video podcast. I had alot of fun making it and learned alot in the process. There is some good information on shooting pictures at Disneyland so I hope you find something useful in also.</p>
<p>Its interesting to watch these now with the current technology like the RED being used to shoot a &#8220;video&#8221; of a wedding and then printing stills from the video because the quality is so high. Of course, the camera and support equipment will set you back 20 thousand dollars or more but in the near future, I think at least the high end weddings will be shot on video and then the stills will be taken from the video stream instead of having both a videographer and a still photographer present. I see the high end wedding being shot with two video cameras to get the angles and pull everything else from that. Might be sooner than I think with the newest DLSRs shooting HD video now abet in a primitive form.</p>

<p>Here is a second podcast I did on some basic photography equipment for the new shooter. Again, this is about 2 years old since it&#8217;s referencing my old Nikon D80. But the ideas are still valid and very useful for the new shooter. If you know much at all about photography and shooting with digital, you probably already know most of what I talk about. <p>A câmera inicia automaticamente a gravação no segundo cartão quando o primeiro estiver cheio. Quando o segundo cartão estiver cheio, a câmera voltará a gravar no primeiro slot, caso haja um cartão nele. Isso permite virtualmente um tempo ilimitado de gravação, bastando a troca alternada entre cartões durante a operação. Os cartões de Classe 6 são obrigatórios. Caso um cartão de Classe 2 ou 4 seja inserido, uma alarme será exibido.</p>

<h2>Modo Pre Rec (Retro Cache)</h2>

<p>Neste modo a câmera permanece gravando de forma contínua por alguns segundos em memória cache. Quando o botão de disparo é acionado, o sinal ao &#8211; vivo é anexado ao sinal gravado em cache, dando ao operador uma vantagem de captação extra. Esta função é muito preciosa em eventos específicos quando o disparo seria perdido antes que uma câmera tradicional pudesse estar pronta para captar. No modo 60Hz, o tempo de cache é de 2.9 segundos, no modo 50Hz, o tempo de cache é de 3.0 segundos. Quando a função Pre Rec estiver ativa, um &#8220;P&#8221; será exibido no VF e no monitor LCD da câmera.</p>
<h2>Continuous Clip &#8211; Modo de Clipe Contínuo</h2>
<p>Neste modo a câmera cria um clipe singular a partir de vários disparos realizados. Esse modo é ideal quando a edição direta na câmera é preferida. A seqüência completa dos disparos estará disponível imediatamente em um único clipe. Quando se estiver gravando no modo Continuous Clip, o timecode poder ser chaveado para free-run ou modo REC.</p>
<h2>Encoder 35 Mbps MPEG2 &#8211; Original da JVC</h2>
<p>Planejado a partir de experiências no desenvolvimento de módulos de <em>encoders</em>, utilizados em estações de televisão, a JVC desenvolveu um codec próprio capaz de produzir uma compressão de alta eficiência de até 35 megabits por segundo, uma taxa de dados (bitrate) que suporta a codificação Full HD (1920&#215;1080). Isto resulta  em imagens gravadas com excepcional qualidade. O esquema MPEG2 long GOP é amplamente aceito como padrão de compressão broadcast, sendo suportado por todos os populares sistemas de edição e servidores broadcast.</p>
<p>No modo HQ, o <em>encoder</em> opera com uma média de taxas de bits variável de 35Mbps. No modo SP a gravação é feita com taxas de bits constantes tanto para 19.7Mbps como para 25Mbps, possibilitando compatibilidade com um grande faixa de equipamentos.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s the Sony DCR-TRV22E Handycam. Having originally come into service as a family video camera around 2004, the DCR has since fallen into disuse. For my purposes though, it should be perfect.</p>
<p>The main features boasted include a 10x optical zoom and a handy night vision mode.  Settings are fully automated, with some degree of control on exposure (the lens aperture is apparently F1.7). There is manual focus via the touch screen, but it&#8217;s not too practical so probably best avoided.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll see how it gets on! I&#8217;ll be looking for a cheapish zoom lense for it.</p>

<p>Là, c’est l’abrasivité de la bande qui nettoyer les têtes vidéo.</p>
<p>Qui dit abrasivité, dit aussi usure !</p>

<title><![CDATA[MiniDV or a hard drive camera?]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[I&#8217;ve been getting a lot of questions lately from people in the market for a new video camera. ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I&#8217;ve been getting a lot of questions lately from people in the market for a new video camera. (Yes, apparently there are some purchases even a recession can&#8217;t prevent).</p>
<p>I always stress that I&#8217;m nowhere near the status of being an expert. I don&#8217;t moonlight at National Camera or Best Buy. I just use video cameras on a daily basis at my day job and for my business. Several of them. From a two-year-old $200 Canon ZR200, to a brand new $3,400 Canon XH-A1 in all its HD glory &#8211; with a couple of Canon GL2&#8217;s and a Canon XL2 mixed in-between.</p>
<p>Aside from me liking Canon&#8230; my biggest recommendation concerns the question I posed in the title of this post. Call me crazy, but I still swear by miniDV.</p>
<p>Look. If a brand new XH-A1 is shooting HD video to tape, capturing great video, then that&#8217;s where my loyalty is gonna be. At least until they stop making miniDV tapes for the kinds of cameras I need to use, I suppose.</p>
<p>The truth is, I don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;ll want to be shooting on miniDV in three years, or five. Yes, I&#8217;ve had a couple tapes get jammed up inside a camera. It&#8217;s not fun. And not cheap to fix.</p>
<p>Will miniDV be replaced by nothing but hard drive cameras, sooner versus later?</p>
<p>I think you&#8217;ve also got to define your purpose for the camera. Are you a professional? Do you shoot family events, sports&#8230; or interviews? Do you need a camera with inputs for high-quality microphones and lighting. Will you edit the footage?</p>
<p>And, how will you be viewing your video? Do you only want to watch it on your computer? Or, do you also want to burn your footage onto DVDs &#8211; or BluRay (a topic for another post) &#8211; from time to time? And, what software will you use to import, edit and export your footage?</p>
<p>Someone like me has to be able to have a camera that captures video in the highest possible quality for viewing on a large screen plasma TV -and- for compression to upload a Web-friendly version to YouTube.</p>
<p>If you had to, you could shoot a video for a corporate Web site or YouTube on a cell phone. But your cell phone isn&#8217;t designed to capture video at DVD quality, or to capture more than a few seconds. You simply can&#8217;t use your cell phone, or one of those Flip MinoHD cameras &#8211; to shoot your daughter&#8217;s basketball game as you would with a larger handheld camera. At least, not effectively.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll say this&#8230; I&#8217;ve imported video from a camera that records to a hard drive, instead of miniDV, into iMovie and I was disappointed with the time it took to process the footage and to export it out to DVD.</p>
<p>Those hard drive cameras are expensive. And you need to make sure your computer can handle the task of importing and storing the footage since you don&#8217;t have the tapes around as a backup.</p>
<p>I shoot to miniDV because it&#8217;s easy to import to iMovie and Final Cut. From there, I know that the export options, either to DVD or the Web, are equally easy.</p>
<p>Just my opinion. I like shooting to miniDV. It works for my workflow. It may not work for yours.</p>
<p>One word of caution though, stick with the same brand of miniDV tape in your camera. Don&#8217;t mix and match. That&#8217;s when problems can pop up inside. I&#8217;ve had that happen to me, and also have read about it happening to others.</p>
