Alongside the other playful and overtly splashy releases from the Traum label in recent months, new producer Applescal is a force. Born Pascal Terstappen, Applescal executes his abstract techno with discernible influences who linger in the acid-washed minimal corners of the genre (James Holden, et al.). A Slave’s Commitment reflects an interest in progressive house/techno productions as well as gauzy midtempo electronic. These productions are fitted with lots of development, jumping from jittery glitch to gentle, washed-out psyche, to hard dance music. Read the rest of my review of Applescal’s album at PopMatters.

mit dem project genetic line startete mirco veitengruber mitte der 90´s seine produzenten und dj laufbahn.

nach einer etwas längeren kreativpause meldet sich mirco 2009 mit releasen auf 8bit, höhenregler, plastic city und merkesdir in der obenden riege der elektronoschen musik szene zurück.

in zusammenarbeit mit basti grub gründete mr. veitengruber das label ‚merkesdir’. die erste eps steht bereits in läden und beeindrucken durch ihre klare linie an gute produzierten groovigen tracks.

im kommendem jahr dürfen wir noch auf veröffentlichungen auf ‚movida’, die zweite ep auf 8bit, remixe für nikola gala auf soulbox records und einem remixe auf ‚opsm records‘ vorerst gespannt sein.

Enfin, finally, finalmente, (or whatever, I kinda need to exercise my tongue in these various languages I speak ; ) NO NARESZCIE … Got some time to upload last weekend’s impressions from Automatic Night # 46 taken place in SQ club, Poznan with Margaret Dygas as a guest DJ. It’s been a really tough and sort of crazy week for me; both in terms of non-professional tasks and those strictly related to the studies/research I conduct. I think it may be the vision of forthcoming trips I planned for December and NYE 2009/2010 : ) Direction, not surprisingly: SOUTHERN EUROPE. Will keep posted, that’s for sure.

But first thing’s first: it was the very first time this autumn I visited all-famous SQ after it’d been refurbished and if it wasn’t for Dygas, I’m sure I wouldn’t be bothered to go there. Surprisingly, this time I DID ENJOY myself, despite the ultra-fashionistas crowd, not too dense fortunately. Talking about Margaret Dygas, a Berliner DJ with Polish ancestry, I’ve discovered her thanks to Stephen, who’d presented to me her extraordinary superamazing EP ‘Invisible Circles’ (from Perlon label).

I’d just like to mention that THIS weekend Poland (esp. Poznań, Wrocław &Łódź) is definitely a place to be: VIVISESJA Festival (with Luke Vibert’s set in Eskulap club, Poznań), Heartthrob (m-nus rec. in Łódź & Wrocław)… Haven’t visited but recommend wholeheartedly!

2009 in Review by Decibel Festival Director Sean Horton

Sean AKA Nordic Soul is the Decibel Festival Curator and Director, he is my good friend and one of the greatest contributors to Seattle’s thriving underground music community. This is a very insightful summary of electronic music in 2009 with his Top 15 list at the bottom as well:

Every year it’s part of my job at PlayNetwork to come up with a list of top albums and overall assessment of music trends for the year. Below is my brief review of what I felt was a pretty landmark year for electronic music in the US and in general. Barring any incredible releases over the next month, these are my picks for the year. Keep in mind this list is strictly made up of albums; not EPs, 12’s or remixes (i.e 95% of the electronic music I purchased this year).

2009 in Review : Binary Pop, Warp’s Legacy, Dub Mutations and the Return of Sexy Dance Music

2009 has been an incredibly innovative year in relation to music production. Artists like Animal Collective, Fever Ray, Royksopp and Moderat have proven once and for all that digital beats and electronic sound design can appeal to a pop audience that otherwise wouldn’t find themselves listening to “electronic music”.

This year also marks the 20 year anniversary of the greatest electronic music label (arguably greatest label) of all time, Warp Records, which has had an exceptional year across the board with strong indie releases from Grizzly Bear and Maximo Park as well as strong releases from their more obscure electronic artists like Tim Exile and Clark. Warp’s 20th anniversary box set is not only one of the best reviewed collections of they year, it’s also a brilliant testament to the label’s vast catalog of ground breaking artists (i.e. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Jamie Lidell, Nightmares on Wax, Prefuse 73, Autechre, Broadcast, Plaid, Battles, Squarepusher, etc).

In addition, 2009 witnessed the rise of Dubstep as a respected genre in the US through acclaimed UK labels like Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Joker, Zomby, Flying Lotus) and Tectonic (2562, Martyn, DJ Pinch, Benga) both of whom continue to blur the boundaries between Grime, Dub, West Coast Hip Hop and Detroit Techno. With the avid support of tastemakers like BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs and Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev (Alpha Pup Records) UK Dubstep and West Coast Glitch Hop / Hip Hop have both become quintessential styles on the electronic music frontline in the US. From Burning Man to this year’s Movement festival in Detroit, Dubstep and Glitch Hop have fully emerged in 2009 as a staple sound in North America.

Another emerging trend has been the Deep House and Tech House revival, which has been experiencing a resurgence the past few years as club-goers have tired of the heady, sterility of Minimal Techno and the frenetic, over the top sound of Electro House. Artists like Gui Boratto, Voodeux, Pezzner, Milton Jackson, Stimming, Mode D, Catz n Dogz, DJ T and Dixon have all helped in keeping underground dance music both sexy and musical.

Overall 2009 has been a phenomenal year for technologically driven music, proving that creativity is truly catching up with the tools used for musical expression in the digital age.

mbf veröffentlichte 2004 die ep ‘cleaning up the ghetto 1+2′ unter dem projektnamen ‘dirt crew’ aka james flavour und break 3000. es gelang ihnen im gleichem jahr mit ‘rock da house’ wohl maßgeblich mit am elektro house hype beigetragen zu haben. 2005 folgte nach einigen weiter releasen der remixe für sasse´s ’soul sounds’ [groove: best remixe 2005] und stürmten erneut die club charts.

in 5 jahren ‘dirt crew recordings’ konnten sie bislang produzenten wie dominik eulberg, jennifer cardini, tigerskin, till von sein und noch viele, viele mehr für den sound des labels begeistern. anfang des monats ist anlässlich des 5 jährigen bestehen ein gleichnamiger liebevoll gestalteter tontäger in den läden erschienen.

der dominik eulberg remixe von ‘largo’ [dirt002]und ‘egal’ [dirt005]von der französin jennifer cardini sind bis heute zwei meiner absoluten lieblings tracks.
