Uroš Umek is internationally acclaimed music producer from Slovenia, seducing the masses with his own music blend for more than a decade. Stockholm, Sweden. He started travelling around the globe more than a decade ago and quickly made himself well known as “the Swedish techno soul” of the electronic music world. Joel’s passion for music really started in his early adolescence when he began attending a music school and spending all his time at the piano and keyboard.
In the early nineties the new phenomena “Rave” caught his attention and his interest for electronic music and recording own material led to large sums of money being spent on drum machines, samplers and synthesizers. Soon the first 12″ techno track was released, a collaboration between him and school friend ADAM BEYER. For over 3 years, 3 times a month, Joel was warming up, closing and playing along-side many of the important DJ’s on the national and international circuit.
Moving back to Stockholm in 1997 Joel had more time to focus on his productions and in early 1998 his own imprint INSIDE RECORDS was born. In the recent years Joel has focused on his DJ career more than ever which has led to a hectic touring schedule. His productions and releases are also getting more attention.
In 2007 we saw a string of releases and collaborations from Joel with other top artists, but the most important release was of course his artist Album “The Observer” on Harthouse. He integrateded Ableton live into his DJ set and used the mixer 3D from Allen&Heath to combine the two systems. The result was fantastic. He will definitely be known as one of the few who more than rode but created the wave of electronic dance music and he will always be mentioned regarding Swedish techno!
This year has been another great year for Joel. 
Before this years Winter Music Conference he got asked by his friend DJ/Producer Nic Fancuilli to mix a compilation with tracks from his Label Saved Records. It got featured as cover cd with the Magazine IDJ doing a WMC Special. And 30.000 units got spread around the world. 
At the moment Joel is working on a album due to be released 2010. He will also continue his residency on the Drumcode label parties that are going to go on tour next year starting in January in London at Ministry of Sound…

German label Sender marked their tenth anniversary a few weeks back with the release of a killer compilation from beginning to end. in fact it is one of only two releases i have been listening to since just before Halloween. (more on the other of them soon.)

i thought that Jake Fairley, like several other DJs and producers from back-in-the-day, had moved to Germany to plant roots in more fertile ground, but i may have been mistaken.. he might still be in Toronto. i’m curious about this, so if anybody knows one way or the other, drop a note in comments.

Shapes is on full automatic repeat and KILLING ME the last couple of days. the oscillator! the beat! the click! the claps! the pads! the bass! and that triple reverb dipped bit near the end? if i look up techno in the dictionary right now i’m pretty sure that this track is pictured. regardless of location roots are planted and growing and blossom thus..

Every once in a while a new producer just smashes their way through into the bigtime. That’s what’s happening with Riva Starr’s sneak-in-and-blow-the-place-up approach. An act whose influence comes from blogs, wild afterparties, music that works for the kids as well as the cool ubercoolische europeans, Riva seems to have sprung onto the scene fully formed – but in reality he’s been working his arse off for years. Riva Starr plunders the best in tech house and beeping, burping synth lines to create a dirty, messy dancefloor affair. His first appearance on Jesse Rose’s ubercool Frontroom label with the Thizzle EP led to a release on Claude Vonstroke’s pivotal Dirtybird label with the WTF?! EP – described by IDJ as “essential – 5/5″. Then there were two releases in quick succession on Southern Fried – a remix of Armand van Helden’s smash J’Taime, and his own EP, Scratch’n'Itch, which had raves from a stupidly wide variety of DJs… And the gigs have kept apace. Just in the last months there’s been a China tour, Glastonbury, Glade and Fusion Festivals, two slots at the Winter Music Conference – the Dirtybird party and a huge Lot49 event – an Australian and US tour on the pipeline and definitely more to come…
A single mix offered to the influential Discobelle blog was downloaded TWELVE THOUSAND times, and a sneaky download of a DJ edit of La Conga, his followup single on Dirtybird, lead to that single going top 5 on Beatport through pure word of mouth – no ads, a secret release with no press, and it had gone top 10 in the tech-house chart before Beatport decided maybe the track should have some advertising… As the Scatterblog review of Riva’s career says … “It’s not like he has a big trademark bassline, or some sort of analog synth style (although he does have some mad analog synths), instead he incorporates a range of different sounds. It seems like the main thing that ties each song together is just that each one has an awesome hook of some kind. Music is all about having a cool sounding something these days, it’s not about ripping out some big guitar solo, or having a really musically sound piece (how many songs are based around three notes these days, but sound fresh as), Riva Starr is easily on top of all that..

Kirk Degiorgio’s name is not synonymous with minimal techno. Over the course of his 18-year career you could count on your hands the number of releases that would even qualify as club-approved tackle. Degiorgio made his name with multi-hued Detroit-inspired techno and went on to produce soulful music in a variety of genres, but rarely touched on straightforward dance floor-ready tracks. Today we see Degiorgio taking a new path that embraces this side of techno, both in terms of production and DJing. Degiorgio rebooted his Applied Rhythm Technology (ART) label this year and is focused on creating full sounding techno that works in club environs. That approach is paying dividends with the recent “Isomer Shift” release on B12, his new “Swarm” EP, the first release for ART’s new Dance Division series and one forthcoming on Planet E. He has applied this same concept to DJing, choosing to play the same type of material he is championing through his own productions.
