The Rolling Stones The British Invasion remains one of the most relevant music movements of the sixt

The Rolling Stones

The British Invasion remains one of the most relevant music movements of the sixties. British pop and rock ‘n’ roll bands, already sensations in their home country, rose to take the US music scene by storm. This movement was led in 1964 by the prominent migration of ‘Beatlemania’ across the pond. The Beatles were first played on American radio on December 17, 1963, and were duly received with vast amounts of praise and curiosity. Capitol Records was forced to release the single I Want To Hold Your Hand three weeks early. This became a precursor to their immense and immediate popularity, a phenomenon that would continue until the band’s end in 1970.

The Beatles – I Wanna Hold Your Hand

But The Beatles weren’t alone in spreading Britain’s unique musical talent, others followed; The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who and The Animals became ubiquitous in the US, spreading the reach of their influence across the globe. Bands such as these firmly established the genre of music they represented, primarily rock and roll, along with the legitimacy of the British music industry. Bands of the British Invasion inspired American performers, some of whom began to mimic the style, and periodically stifled other emerging genres. This wave of ‘Britishness’ occupied the US music scene in its entirety, up until 1967.

Just like The Beatles headed the British Invasion, Ministry of Sound has remained at the forefront of club music for eighteen years. The nightclub, founded in South London in 1991, was originally dedicated to the promotion of US house music in the UK. It opened in a disused bus garage and was fast to gain popularity. Now, Ministry of Sound presents the very best of genres such as house, electronic and dance, attracting international DJs and a diverse crowd that all share a common love of music. Not only was it successful in heralding the arrival of US house music, but it has cultivated that success by always presenting the freshest new beats.

However, unlike The Beatles and the British Invasion movement, Ministry of Sound has extended its popularity through more than one medium of influence. Over the years, Ministry has evolved from a venue to a global brand; this includes the regular release of CDs, a TV station, a radio show, and various paraphernalia such as clothing and other merchandise. Additionally, a second club has opened in Egypt. Also dissimilar is Ministry’s ability to adapt to the times. It is widely thought that the British Invasion lasted for a mere three years. Comparatively, Ministry celebrated its eighteenth birthday two months ago and has thrived for nearly two decades. The Ministry of Sound label began as a key component of the internationalization of US house music; it now stands as a movement in itself, one that celebrates a broader genre of electronic music on a global scale. Here’s to another eighteen years of prosperity.

September 4th, 2009

Hiyiz,

Blog’s a day late today coz I though I’d wait and give a post mortem on the DJ set we did last night for Dublin’s Soundcheck night at Spy Bar.

I was assigned the task of being Fatty-Fatty-Fat-Fat Boy Slim for the night and so, having never manned a mixer before, a quick tutorial by our guitar player Chris meant I could look busy on The Wheels Of Steel (well, plastic, actually) whilst the boys downed some complimentary beverages.

Really enjoyed it I have to say. Myself and Niall had sorted a playlist covering our varying / converging musical tastes and so saved rooting around in a massive CD wallet as I made sure I qued up Dee Dee Ramone’s “one, two, three, four..” just right.

Due to the regular Soundcheck DJ being on holidays, the stand in before us had some interesting choices….

Let’s put it this way, as we chatted before the set, the sound of Phil Collins singing “Invisible Touch” more than motivated me to get up there and let the people “witness the strength of street knowledge” by spinning N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton”.

Only minor glitch was when I dropped “Bulls On Parade” a little earlier in the set than I’d planned by mistake; but the sight of Niall, Chris and Max (our roadie) going bananas for it allowed me to retrospectively claim that the sudden mood shift was an amazing piece of foresight on my part.

All in all, it was a gas.

But I don’t think Ministry Of Sound will come a’knocking anytime soon….

Enjoy the your weekend, good people!

We’re off to Stradbally tomorrow for Electric Picnic….!!

Hugz n’ stuff,

Disko

X

Soundtrack ( I think this was the runnning order…) :

“Fuckin’ In The Bushes” – Oasis

“Straight Outta Compton” – N.W.A

“Viking” – Los Lobos

“Natural’s Not In It” – Gang Of Four

“The Message” – Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five

“Bulls On Parade” – Rage Against The Machine

“Commando” – Ramones

“99 Problems” – Jay Z

“Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” – The Temptations

“You’re Gonna Miss Me” – 13th Floor Elevators

“Sikamikanico” – Red Hot Chili Peppers

“Big Mouth Strikes Again” – The Smiths

“You Really Got A Hold On Me” – The Beatles

“Pass The Mic” – The Beastie Boys

“Step Out” – Oasis

“Epic” – Faith No More

Wonderland @ Ministry of Sound, London – Saturday 24th October 2009 – REVIEW

Images used with permission from Ministry of Sound – many thanks!

When Pete Tong announced he was taking his brand new Ibiza night Wonderland to Eden back in 2008 there were gasps of horror at the thought of the top DJ abandoning swish superclub Pacha in favour of San Antonio’s less swanky offering. But the move proved to be extremely fruitful (not only for Eden) with the Wonderland brand growing massively and now featuring all over the world at festivals and clubs.

Wonderland dancer @ MoS

On my first trip back to the buzzing capital city of London, this time as a proper grown-up, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to hit some of the biggest clubs in the country and of course there was no competition on discovering Pete Tong’s Wonderland night was on – Ministry of Sound it was!

I’d heard the area the club was in wasn’t the best but jumping out the taxi on arrival and being greeted with a thumping bass line and huge quirky Ministry of Sound posters, the dark industrial setting only made the club ooze with even more coolness.

A huge courtyard fills the outdoor space where smokers can listen to funky house beats while dabbling in their guilty pleasure but preferring to spend the chilly October evening in the warmth we headed inside up a long corridor and stood for a moment to take in our surroundings.

Wonderland @ MoS

You could mistake the Main Bar for the main room it’s so huge, plus the great electro tunes coming from We’re Not Cool in the DJ box signalled main room carnage. It was only upon realising it was Chris Lake who should be warming up the decks for Pete Tong we noticed the stream of people weaving their way through the crowd towards a sign labelled Box so we followed.

Entering the Box we were suitably impressed – this was what main room action was all about. A bespoke sound system ensured the bass lines were of the finest quality as Chris Lake warmed up the decks for Wonderland’s main man. Throwing some of our best dance moves amongst the eager crowd we were treated to an audio-visual display surrounded by Wonderland themed décor and it wasn’t long before Pete Tong himself took over the decks and treated the animated crowd to a seamless set of expertly blended house and techno.

Wonderland @ MoS

Having missed Wonderland in Ibiza it was exciting getting to see what all the fuss was about and it definitely wasn’t without reason. Pete Tong knows how to put on a show and Ministry of Sound is the perfect setting – the fact it’s open till 7am is an added perk – only in London!

Check out this review and more in December’s issue of tilllate magazine – out end of November!

Thanks to the Contagious Network I was sent a copy of this years (but essentially next years) Annual

Thanks to the Contagious Network I was sent a copy of this years (but essentially next years) Annual 2010 album. (If you join them, mention that I sent you!)

A fantastically packaged 3 disc treasure trove of dance tracks which are likely going to make your feet move, if not causing your brain to electrically pulsate in desire to get your fresh summer moves out (if you’re in Australia of course!)

Disc one was mixed by John Course, which is essentially your typical house album (as is tradition with most Annuals).

Track listings for disc 1:

1: Heartbreaker (Laidback Luke Remix) – MSTRKRFT FEAT. John Legend – Heartbreaker is a great way to start the whole album and get you in the mood for the good times ahead, however it feels too short, despite being one of the longer tracks on the album

2: Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer) (Angger Dimmas Remix) – Freemasons FEAT. Sophie Ellis Bextor – Great tie in with Heartbreaker, but two heart break songs in a row? who cares, they’re well blended.

3: Now You See It – Honorebel FEAT. Pitbull & Jump Smokers – I swear I heard this song earlier in the year, regardless it’s a good tie-in of an RnB/rap track. I can’t wait to see some of the interpretive dance moves for this song!

4: I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) – Pitbull – Ah, this is how I thought I’d heard ‘Now You See It’ before, beat wise, they’re very similar, even in the style of rapping by Pitbull (why must all rappers try to keep the same sound for an entire album?!)

5: Shake It – The Noise FEAT. Xamplify – This oddly sounds like it’s sampled some of the beat from Kylie Minouge’s ‘The One’ and Danni Minouge’s ‘Put the needle on it’. This isn’t a bad thing, but it’s interesting to hear.

6: Shot Caller – Ian Carey – Ah, at last, some strong female vocals, no offence Sophie, this is one track to listen out for (so open your ears, or get them de-waxed ASAP!)

7: Be The One (Amand Van Helden Club Vocal Mix) – Jack Penate – I’ve been hankering for a good Amand Van Helden mix lately, and this has definitely wet my appetite, my first impression was, ugh I don’t like the vocals, but they grow on you during the track. This is going to get stuck in my head!

8: We Are Golden (Calvin Harris Remix) – Mika – I’ve got to say, I’m over this remix, I’ve been listening to it since it was released online a few months ago, it’s still wickedly addictive, however it does feel like it breaks away from the rest of the album which has so far been a really good carry over beat which has been blended well.

9: Hey! – Laidback Luke & Diplo – Ah, I can see how this ties into the end of ‘We are Golden’, this will get you jumping, there isn’t exactly any way to describe this song other than “let the high energy set you free”, this is a song which will force you to put any bug-bears away.

10: She Got It – Vandalism & Angger Dimus – great drum beat infused with electro sounds, as for what it is that ’she’s’ got, well, that’s up to you to decide. Pump this one up!

11: Pon De Floor – Major Lazer FEAT. Vybz Kartel – This is a song which I can see dance troops overusing, great for an army style setting for troops out there. Spread out some room on the floor, dancers, take your position.

12: Let The Bass Kick In Miami Bitch – Chuckie & LMFAO – nothing other than ‘I’m in Miami Bitch’ is what you’re going to take away from this song. This crowd pleaser is sure to get the crowd back into the mood.

13: Whatchadoin? (DJ Alvaro Remix) – Nasa – has a good lead in from the previous song, and thankfully doesn’t last long, while going for 3.15, this is definitely a filler song

14: I Like That – Richard Vission & Static Revenger Starring Luciana – This song is perfect, just when you’ve skulled down your last beverage, the energy will want to be released from all the pores in your body, yup, it’s THAT good.

15: Out My Bitch – T-Rek – with a swift change into this song, you get a dirty, grimy feeling, which can only ever be used for good *wink!*

16: I’ll Get You – Classixx – great track, might fall under the class of running for too long after about 3 or 4 listens, not horrible though.

17: Love You No More (Chuckie Remix) – Bob Sinclar Feat. Shabba Ranks – Bob Sinclar is back with a song which is not going to be a hit, sorry to any fans out there, he has diverted away from his previous sound and incorporates some typical carnival sounds, which is a little weird.

18: Meich – Sebastian Ingrosso & Dirty South / Bertie Blackman – This is a darker sounding song, and is then blended into Bertie Blackman’s Thump (Acapella), which explains the songs 5.30 timing.

19: Going Underground – Muzzaik – I really find that these guys always sound the same, high energy trance music which makes you feel like if you hadn’t taken a substance to enhance the music, you feel like you should find your nearest 7-11 guy.

20: You’re Special – Sir James – I wanted to like this, I REALLY wanted to like this. It sounds too….. late 80’s/90’s. It uses the same tricks as a track from back then would use, it uses a voice from someone who could obviously be used better than what she has been. You don’t feel that special after listening to this, unless you danced to it while on a pole!

21: Fire Power – Wolfgang Gartner – Ah, the last track, is it going to make us feel like continuing with this dance of life….. possibly, that’s up to the listeners to decide. It’s an interesting track which pulls some of it’s credibility from classical composers.

Overall Disc 1 Assessment:

John Course obviously hits off with a fantastic mix, all of the tracks are beautifully blended, congratulations to him for achieving that, some DJ’s aren’t that good at carrying over beats, Regular listeners to The Annual will not be disappointed. However, I will say this much, the disc felt like it was off to a fantastic start, and then like a lot of really good nights out, the music can get rather shit and you feel like staggering to the DJ and begging him to play the latest from Daft Punk, or to pop another pill. It gets dirty, and whether this ties into disc two is yet to be seen.

I almost felt like Mr Course had run out of songs to play that were decent enough to keep a crowd going, and in all fairness, all the DJ’s on the album have contributed 62 songs, so they would have had to scrape the barrel. My argument for these CD’s is that you CAN actually pull out an old crowd pleaser. It won’t kill you, and it will keep the mood going. Yes, I know the annual is meant to be new music only, but half of the songs on disc one are clearly not new.

Bring on Disc 2 (which will be coming soon!)

When you think 2001 there’s really only one thing that sticks in your head, September the 11th

When you think 2001 there’s really only one thing that sticks in your head, September the 11th. I distinctly remember coming in from school that day and my Dad (with the telly off) saying to me, “Marc you’ll never believe what’s happened?” At which point I felt like saying washing machine’s broke or you’ve got a new partner (he was going through divorce in 2001 y’see) but the telly came on and a picture of what seemed like loads of people covered in a big pile of fag ash and two towers obliterated by two jumbo jets were to scar and shock folk around the world. It was the beginning of the American led war on terror! Many believe it’s a conspriracy, but “The Fear” was here! But then again “The Fear” was already here from that February as Hear’Say were unleashed as winners of ITV’s “Popstars” which went out to spout more of the same rubbish to this very day (JLS excluded!)

Anyway them aside 2001 was actually another very very good year for music and not just for “Bridget Jones’ Diary” and Kylie parading around in a sheet with a hood cut out. With so many (and so many we couldn’t include) quality dance and urban tracks it was a year of discovery for me in terms of music part thanks to my brother, divorce and MTV-over exposure day and very very late night (ta bro) my 2001 was a rollercoaster – enjoy the ride!

—————————————————————————————————————————–

1. WHEATUS – ‘TEENAGE DIRTBAG’

It was NEVER off “The Box” – just NEVER off it! The first of American pop-rock band Wheatus’ 2001 big sellers ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ was taken from the film “Loser” starring “American Pie’s” Jason Biggs. ’Teenage Dirtbag’ was so big that it also appeared in a car advert (bit fucked up if you remember it!) It’s lost it’s cred now but ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ really did sum up what life was like for us teenagers back in 2001…. i’ve got two tickets to Iron Maiiiiden baaaaby, come with me Friday don’t say maaaybeee (can we play with madness instead?)

WATCH : http://bit.ly/tQP4k / APPEARS ON : Wheatus (Columbia)

—————————————————————————————————————————–

2. MISSY ELLIOTT – ‘GET UR FREAK ON’

When Timbaland wasn’t a complete sellout and Missy Elliott was still a fat mother bitch, ‘Get UR Freak On’ was Missy’s first UK top ten hit and prodomonently featured the Indian ektara! Complete with a deranged video featuring cameos from Ja Rule, Ludacris(ps), LL Cool J and white black gimps (with kooky eyes), ‘Get UR Freak On’ was one of the essential urban tracks of 2001!

WATCH : http://bit.ly/3A3GzV / APPEARS ON : Miss-E So Addictive (Warner Music)

—————————————————————————————————————————–

3. THE AVALANCHES – ‘SINCE I LEFT YOU’

A pile of records mashed up on two samplers and a bunch of turntables sound mad enough? Doesn’t to us as Australian act The Avalanches make our Super 7 with “Since I Left You.” The duo’s two singles of that year reached the top 20 and with two uber cool and stunning videos to match the soundtrack, for lovers of credible dance music like myself (bit hard to imagine that is it not) it was a bit hard pushed not to include one of their records in this list!

WATCH : http://bit.ly/2fDKXU / APPEARS ON : Since I Left You (Modular)

—————————————————————————————————————————–

4. iiO – RAPTURE

Seeing as Destiny’s Child ‘Survivor’ was our favourite album of 2001, ‘Bootylicious’ got a last minute boot from the list to makeway for this drunken slur (sounds it!) The neo-dance gem ‘Rapture’ was a #2 hit in November 2001 for the New York dance act and unfortunately they were pretty much a one hit wonder, but then again only if you go by the names Eric Prydz or Fedde Le Grand then you tend to get more than one hit through the Ministry Of Sound offset label Data….. (anybody else noticed?)

WATCH : http://bit.ly/3A5P3 / APPEARS ON : NOW Dance Anthems (EMI TV/Ministry Of Sound)

—————————————————————————————————————————–

5. FEEDER – BUCK ROGERS

He’s got a brand new car, looks like a Jaguar, it’s got leather seats, it’s got a CD player-PLAYER-PLAYER-PLAYER-PLAYER-PLAYER-PLAYER-PLAYER-PLAYER-PLAYER-PLAYER… but I don’t wanna talk about it anymore… *nuff said*

WATCH : http://bit.ly/mImif / APPEARS ON : The Singles (Echo)

—————————————————————————————————————————–

6. BASEMENT JAXX – ROMEO

Jaxx go Bhangra-Bhangra-Bhangra! ‘Romeo’ is one of the standout dancetracks from 2001 and features the vocals from the extremely talented Kele Le Roc on the track! Add to that a full blown Bollywood dance affair video and the result was a top 5 smash and huge airplay anthem for the Jaxx in the summer of 2001!

WATCH : http://bit.ly/2ahmTv /APPEARS ON : The Singles (XL Talent)

—————————————————————————————————————————–

7. KYLIE MINOGUE – CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD

It’s minimalist heaven written by Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis, ‘CGYOMH’ is Kylie’s biggest selling UK single to date! But forget the song it was the video that made us drop our jaws at this dance genius as Kylie wore what seemed like a sheet of cloth with a hood attached, to this day we’re not sure about those red men and women though! A mashup was serviced with New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ in 2002 and was featured in her Brit awards performance that year. Random music fact time - Kylie’s metallic dress featured in the video is “apparently” a tribute to Roisin Murphy’s similar outfit in the video for Moloko’s 99′ hit “Sing It Back”… cool eh!

WATCH : http://bit.ly/3u2Pvj / APPEARS ON : Ultimate Kylie (Parlophone)

—————————————————————————————————————————–

BONUS TRACK :

> EVE FEAT. GWEN STEFANI – “LET ME BLOW YA MIND”

Dup-dup-doop-doop-dup-doo-doo-doop… far too good to let slip off our Super 7, it’s the BEST bassline of 00’s written by none other than Dr. Dre (yes Dr. Dre!) ‘Let Me Blow Ya Mind’ raped the nations urban/pop dancefloors in late 2001 and was the first outing for the unlikely pair.

WATCH : http://bit.ly/1xIS2U / APPEARS ON : Scorpion (Polydor)

—————————————————————————————————————————–

GUILTY PLEASURE :

> SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR – “MURDER ON THE DANCEFLOOR”

‘Take Me Home’ or ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’… hmmm! Off the back of 2000’s huge selling “Groovejet”, SEB’s solo career started with two pop anthems, the second of which was the Xmas party anthem “Murder On The Dancefloor.” “Murder” was written by none other than the New Radicals lead singer Gregg Alexander, who also responsible for Ronan Keating’s ‘Life Is A Rollercoaster.’ The track featured a video that’d put Strictly to shame (sorry Alesha) and a killer remix package, take it away Sophie!

WATCH : http://bit.ly/1ec54M / APPEARS ON : Read My Lips (Polydor)

There was a day and age when people were frightened of microwave ovens, Keith Harris & Orville were national heroes and Boy George was still a woman but it was the arrival of the synth that brought us the soundtrack to the neon age!

Ministry Of Sound’s ‘Anthems’ series returns with yet another tip top 3CD set filled to the brim with unforgettable late 70’s and 80’s electronica (yes false advertising MOS, Gary Numan – Tubeway Army – M to name a few were at the back end of the 70’s) guaranteed to get any retro lover in the mood! You could call it an idiots guide to electronica but this collection truely is sublime with a few hits and misses along the way kicking off with the greatest #2 of all time, Ultravox’s “Vienna.”

From the obvious compilation inclusions of Soft Cell (“Tainted Love”), New Order (“Blue Monday”), Visage (“Fade To Grey”) and Pet Shop Boys (“West End Girls”) MOS spring the rabbit from the hat with a few surprises as usual. We never expected to ever see Sparks (“Beat The Clock”), Debbie Harry (“French Kissing In The USA”) and Johnny Hates Jazz (“Shattered Dreams”) included on a Ministry Of Sound album but as per usual the team have broken the taboo!

80’s pop fans won’t be dissapointed either as this set also contains hits from Duran Duran (“The Reflex”), Spandau Ballet (“To Cut A Long Story Short”) and Kajagoogoo (“Too Shy”.) So rather than buying a cheap old blando 80’s compilation this winter, this fiesty neon effort from MOS is more the pop pickers choice, all you need to bring along is Babycham and cheap hairspray!

“Ministry Of Sound : Anthems Electronic 80’s” is available from November the 9th on CD & Digital through MOS/Universal Music

Antes de estourar na carreira de DJ, o Deadmau5 sempre foi visto como “nerd”. Bem, ainda é um pouquinho, vai… Então demorou pra ele se engajar em algo como essa última dele!

Recentemente ele lançou duas faixas online, gratuitas e exclusivas. Como dizem os engraçadinhos: The Reward is Cheese… and a free download!

A outra faixa, chamada “Peddler of Misery”, você consegue de uma maneira mais fácil. Basta se cadastrar no site Clubtracks Online pra baixar de graça a faixa do rato, além de outras duas: Rye Rye feat. Mia – Bang [Stanton Warriors Remix] e Fain – Aurora Borealis.

Como se tudo isso não fosse o bastante, ele lançou ainda um pen drive com o formato da Mau5head, e uma pulseira-USB que vem com o áudio de uma apresentação que ele fez ao vivo em Londres. Pode?
