Valerie is a bit of a paradox. It is, at the moment, a ‘collectif’ of – in order of composition – upcoming French DJ/artists College, Anoraak, The Outrunners, Maethelvin, and Minitel Rose, and the only non-French member Russ Chimes of London. However, it’s not a label. The group was initiated by David Grellier, aliased College, who first named a blog ‘Valerie’ based on the popular name of the ’80s (his inspiration). The Outrunners and Maethelvin, both as longtime friends of the 30-year-old blogger, and Anoraak and Minitel Rose, also born out of Grellier’s hometown of Nantes, France, were more than enough persuasion to unite the musicians under the single title – Valerie. In a celebratory party to kick things off, Russ Chimes was invited to play a DJ set, and, becoming very friendly with the artists, would later join forces.

Much speculation has been made as to whether or not Valerie will become a label, and with it’s impressive line-up many had already assumed so. In an interview with Grellier, the Valerie frontman said that no label was in store — yet. Mostly as an issue of funds, the contingency from western France will for now remain a collective, but seeing what these Frenchmen can do individually is proof of the group’s promising future. Theirs is a style intent on re-imagining retro futurism and making a mark in Italo-disco. With increasing prominence and hype all too hopeful, keep your eyes on the boys from Nantes.

Belo Horizonte recebe em novembro mais uma edição do Eletronika, evento que apresenta ao público brasileiro grupos nacionais e internacionais que flertam com o gênero eletrônico. Além da música, o festival traz em sua programação o Fórum Eletronika, nos dias 5, 6 e 7 de novembro, incluindo eventos como sessões de filmes, oficinas debates reflexivos sobre a música brasileira e interação entre profissionais da área.

Celebrando o Ano da França no Brasil, o Eletronika traz em sua programação de shows quatro atrações internacionais de destaque: Birdy Nam Nam, Anoraak, Minitel Rose e Rubin Steiner.

Do cenário brasileiro, o festival selecionou grupos expoentes nos palcos nacionais como Black Drawing Chalks (GO), Copacabana Club (PR) e Garotas Suecas (SP). Em meio às atrações que são da capital mineira, destaca-se a presença no evento do Dead Lover’s Twisted Heart e a Virna Lisi, célebre banda de rock independente dos anos 90, que volta aos palcos após mais de 10 anos sem fazer shows ao vivo.

O Eletronika 2009 concentra a maior parte de sua programação no Espaço 104, galpão revitalizado na área central de Belo Horizonte, que vai abrigar durante os dias de evento as atividades multimídia do festival como as oficinas de áudio e vídeo, debates, sessões de cinema e apresentações musicais ao vivo com interação do público e instalações audiovisuais. Após o término da programação no Espaço 104, o Eletronika se estende pela madrugada em dois dias com festas nas principais casas noturnas da cidade, levando shows e discotecagens para Velvet Club, A Obra e Deputamadre.

The Valerie Collective has blown up over the past 2 years. Anoraak, Minitel Rose, College & The Outrunners make up this 80’s synth-pop outfit that’s been throwing iinnsanne parties in France and most of Europe. Uma ótima oportunidade para quem é de Belo Horizonte e não vai ao Festival Planeta Terra é o Eletronika 2009, que acontece entre os dias 5 e 7 de novembro. Destaque para N.A.S.A e Copacabana Club (que também se apresentam no Planeta Terra) e Killer on The Dance Floor. Se você está em Belo Horizonte precisa morar numa caverna para não estar sabendo que em novembro rola o Eletronika, um super festival que mostra novidades musicais que pelos menos flertam com o eletrônico. A pegada do evento também conta com rock, perfeito pra quem não curte fritação de rave e o caralho.

Ao todo, 17 atrações estão confirmadas. Do lado de cá, nomes da cena independente como Garotas Suecas (SP), Black Drawing Chalks (GO), Copacabana Club (PR) e o duo N.A.S.A. – que a gente vai considerar daqui por ser formado pelo DJ brasileiro Zegon (sim, ex-Planet Hemp) e o DJ e produtor norte-americano Sam Spiegel. Do lado gringo, só francês: Birdy Nam Nam, Anoraak, Minitel Rose e Rubin Steiner.

O evento vai rolar no Espaço 104 (Praça da Estação), no Duputamadre (Contorno, 2028), n’A Obra (Rio Grande do Norte, 1168) e no Velvet Club (Sergipe, 1493). A programação diuna, que inclui oficinas e filmes, é grátis. A noturna custa a partir de 30 r$ a inteira.

El festival Bilboloop, tras las fiestas de presentación, comienza su edición 2009 este próximo fin de semana (23 y 24 de octubre, viernes y sábado) en Bilbao.

Bekende artiesten op het album zijn Anoraak, College en Minitel Rose.

“Valerie” is een blog/collectief uit Nantes dat elektronische muziek maakt met een vette knipoog naar de jaren 80. Bekendste artiesten in de gelederen zijn College, Anoraak en Minitel Rose. Zeggen die u niets? Geen nood. Valerie is op dit moment nog maar een randverschijnsel, maar lanceerde in Frankrijk reeds haar eerste compilatiealbum onder de naam – u raadt het al – Valerie And Friends. Het schijfje staat bol van de  jaren 80-synths,  bevat catchy melodietjes en is daarenboven een regelrechte aanwinst  voor uw platencollectie. Sfeervolle en bij momenten nostalgische electropop zoals het hoort!

Om het bericht een vaderlandse inslag te geven nog even dit: Stephen Falken – lid van Valerie – zal zijn nieuwe EP Visions uitbrengen op het Belgische Flexx Records.

• Comme quoi le Minitel a choqué plus d’une génération! Pour certains ils ne sont plus a présenter, Minitel Rose regroupe 3 jeunes gens (Parisien/Nantais) fort influencés par la culture US des années 80 et par le coté cheap à la Francaise.

• Ce qui peut expliquer Minitel Rose. 1er Ep en 2008 The french machine, de l’électro-pop en toute  simplicité, synthé a gogo, un peu d’eighthies et hop voici une galette equilibrée, honnete et prometteuse. 7Titres dont Continue un coup de coeur instantanné, car un peu de Metronomy, j’adore. Lost my way (remix) vaut egalement le detour!

Ya se que hablé de ellos, lo sé…pero es que no se que me pasa con su disco, que aunque cortito (más bien parece un ep) me gusta tanto.

Si!!! Son los Minitel Rose, con su minidisco French Machine, que me esta volviendo loco.

Ya me diréis que coño está pasando en Francia, para que todo lo que saquen al mercado tenga un estilo tan sublime, tanta elegancia, sea bailable, retro y a la vez moderno, no se, se me acaban los adjetivos “adulativos”.

A lo mejor a ellos si les daban dos petit suis y a nosotros un esmirriado chamburcy.

Os voy a poner unos temas en audio aunque ya puse los videos hace un tiempo.

Vale la pena recordar que estos tíos, están ahí y de momento no creo que se marchen. Espero que pronto saquen un álbum en condiciones y no se si voy a poder aguantar!

El colectivo marsellés Valerie, grandes impulsores del nu rave francés también saca recopilatorio, este bién mezclado y con más sentido. Ha reunido a doce colegas suyos para montar un disco de lo más apetecible. Hay miembros de su colectivo como Minitel Rose o Anoraak,  amigos como The Gossip mezclados por Fred Falke y también un tema en exclusiva que viene a cargo de The Outrunners. So here goes the run down of my selections for the debut Miss-tape from moi. 

Grafton to start it off with a bang with their track All stars which is quickly offset by Caged Baby’s downtempo and soothing “Hello There”.  The perfect segue between this and the Twelves original track, Works for me, was an instrumental track from The Scientists of Modern music. I’m in love with the Twelves and their lyrics for this song ["when you make out with two girls at the door// i think it works for me// when you pass out on the bathroom floor// i think it works for me"] because it reminds me of images from Bronques’ photos of debauchery on LastNightsParty.  The next selection picks up with Russ Chimes’ remix of Continue that has  a throbbing beat and wonderfully wispy vocoded vocals.  Topping off the female vocals, I bring in Moulinex’s Come on Closer which leads into the closer from Danger’s remix of Love juice. Danger’s take on this song combines some unique sounds with superb solos on the keyboard. That about does it for my debut mixtape and I hope ya’ll enjoy it.

It’s like taking a warm bath filled with synthasizers. Bask in the warmth, embrace the warmth; embrace the essence of Valerie.
Alright I’m not sure where I was going with that. ANYWHO, Moulinex and Press Release are responsible for this stand-out track from the compilation. Emphasis on the groove, I like that.

Depuis quelques temps, dans les clubs branchés de la capitale, un nom revient fréquemment : Valérie. Oui, mais Valérie qui ? Lemercier ? Pécresse ? Damidot ? Beaucoup d’interrogations et une seule réponse, car Valerie n’est pas une seule et même personne, mais un collectif  “branchouille” qui réunit un certain nombre de jeunes artistes soudés autour de la dernière tendance so hype : “l’electro eightees”.

Valerie, c’est avant tout l’histoire du nantais David Grellier – tête pensante du groupe College, qui fait partie du collectif – qui lance en 2007 un blog : Valerie est né(e) … Assumant parfaitement le côté kitsch que peut avoir l’évocation des eightees en plein revival sixties (2007), David Grellier s’accroche, et rassemble de plus en plus de fans autour des cultissimes séries Mac Gyver, Magnum, ou encore L’Amour Du Risque, tout en proposant en parallèle des compositions originales, en libre écoute. C’est finalement tout un monde mi rétro, mi futuriste qu’a construit le jeune nantais : les samples vintages se mêlent aux sons les plus pointus des ordinateurs high tech, créant un univers musical unique.

Du blog au collectif

Dès lors, les intervenants du blog sortent chacun leurs projets, tout en se conseillant mututellement : Valerie se caractérise avant tout par une vraie solidarité … Ainsi, Jupiter, Anoraak, College, ou les plus connus Minitel Rose (et bien d’autres encore) voient le jour, les singles commencent à tourner dans les clubs, le phénomène est lancé. Le collectif s’offre alors les services des graphistes allemands The Zonders (http://www.thezonders.com/) afin de parfaire l’esthétique si particulière des eightees. Enfin, les premières “Valerie Parties” voient le jour et permettent à ces joyeux drilles d’acquérir une renommé suffisante pour atteindre leur rêve: partir en mini tournée aux Etats-Unis, se produire au célébrissime Webster Hall de New York … et organiser un gigantesque bal de promo made in USA. Valerie ou la classe internationale, en somme …
