The grandparents are here and we got up, raced around to get everyone showered and pretty, rented a minivan and drove to the city singing Kumbaya…

Then we went to Disney on ice, bought loads of excessively expensive CRAP, gorged on a $12 bucket of popcorn (wtf?), and took my girl to the pre-show princesses.

2 hours later we pile back in the minivan, get excited to go do some shopping and eating only to be dismayed when the girls fall asleep.

So we plot a quick half hour run into the mall so I can at least get a stocking for Brennyn (so I am ready to start decorating on the 1st!) while Bal and Gampa stay in the van with sleepy girls. We run into Winners, get sucked into the time-suckage vortex that is Winners, find more then we intended to buy and get ready to jump back in the van.

Only Kaya has just woken up. Then Brennyn. What the hell, lets go to dinner! At a real sit down restaurant. That does not serve Pirate Packs or Happy Meals.

Dinner is delicious as are the girls. Even with glass cups and squishy booths. We pile back in the minivan and head home.

Through the course of the day, the minivan has endured 2 car seats, a full bag of blankies/food/change of clothes/etc., shopping, donuts, take-out and coffee cups, mittens/coats/toques strewn about and 4 adults, 1 toddler and 1 baby. It looks as though we’ve lived in it for 3.5 years.

I sit here now with a Cars pylon on my head pondering how cliched my day has been. And how bloody fantastic.

And as convenient as it was, I still hate the minivan. Even though it is super comfortable. So damn comfortable… And roomy… And fit 6 of us… And had cup holders and baskets in the most convenient of locals… And…

Nope, no minivan for us. EVER. Really…

I love reading bumper stickers – well, the funny ones that is. There is nothing like driving

I love reading bumper stickers – well, the funny ones that is. There is nothing like driving to bring out the need for humor in a person’s life. Especially if you’re a mom, because chances are you are listening to something the kids want to hear, rather than something a sane adult would enjoy. (Sounds of “Baby Beluga” begin to run through my mind, all these years later.) Which reminds me of that bumper sticker that started showing up in the early 80s: ”Insanity is heredity, you get it from your kids.”

Ya think? Well, I have been talking to myself, and experiencing fanciful thoughts, and moments of delusion. So, maybe that bumper sticker is onto something.

Of course, I was talking to only myself because my kids were obviously ignoring everything I was saying. And I was secretly fantasizing about just continuing to drive after dropping everybody off at their respective schools. (If only you could drive to the Bahamas from my neck of the woods.) And it must have been a delusional moment when I thought making sticker charts was going to change anybody’s behavior but mine.

Parenting is one happy moment after another. Just ask any driver of a minivan with Hello Kitty stickers on the windows.

So here’s another thing I find out when you own a minivan, you are not allowed to play loud music or rock music. I have always listened to rock, pop, alternative, and dance music. When I was pregnant, I would listen to Metallica or Guns and Roses and my son would kick and move around. To this day, 4 years later, he loves any type of music and will dance. I was waiting in line at the daycare 2 years ago and listening to a song with the windows down. Yeah, it was above the volume I would listen to if my son was in the car, but he wasn’t. Some moms just looked at me and shook their heads. I was like, what? I can’t listen to good music? He wasn’t in the car. It was the Who. I mean, come on. Like they listen to the Wiggles all day. So now they are better than me. Why have the stereo system and not use it?

Just last month, I was waiting in the car line at his school and had a similar situation….the asst. principle comes through and gets the kids’ names as the cars line up to get the kids lined up. Good idea. Now normally my son rides the bus since I work (that’s another blog) but we had an appt to go to so I picked him up to save time. I didn’t know that they did this so I wasn’t expecting her to show up at my window with a disapproving face. I had the car off, windows down, radio up, and on my Blackberry. I guess I am just a horrible person. I was just chillaxin’ while waiting. I was an outsider and felt like one when I went through the line. What a wonderful school environment.

We linked a few weeks ago to Malcolm Gladwell’s New Yorker analysis of football and head trauma. Gladwell’s article brought to the fore some issues that have been latent in football for some time (Wait…you mean this is a dangerous sport?), as seen by the attention it’s getting now from Congress and from former Chief Michael Oriard on Deadspin. (What we’d like to see more attention on: the horribly misfigured fingers of former football players. You can see a little with Ted Johnson in the NYT video above, but this is a growing trend among NFL analysts that some of us would rather not see; hence, lack of links.)

The much anticipated HD trailer for the new James Cameron movie Avatar came out last week, to a much better reception than the original trailer from August. One thing that is clear: This profile of Cameron makes him seem like an arrogant asshole.

As part of our extensive World Series preview this week, Tim subtly criticized Philadelphia fans (we believe his words were, “Philadelphia fans suck”). Now, The New York Times‘ Mike Tanier–a native of Philly–examines the differences between the fan ideologies in the City of Brotherly Love and the Big Apple.

Great: Not only are minivans culturally unpopular, but also attractive to clever bears.

you know, we all go through this at one point in time…..you are getting in the minivan, start

you know, we all go through this at one point in time…..you are getting in the minivan, start up, and see a message blinking on the dash board….”rear hatch ajar”….either zander did not close the door hard enough…..or you have a newly purchased table big enough to be a tongue depressor for Kong in your minivan. last night i was dealing with the later of the two situations.

and what’s with the messages from cars/minivans these days. “rear hatch ajar”? come on….our news papers/websites that deliver life and death info are written on a 5th grade reading level. but our car computers have apparently graduated with honors and gotten a masters from Harvard. who even uses the word “ajar” other than a cat at a jar factory. it’s not like you tell your kids “if you ajar those oreo cakesters while i am gone you are going to rue the day” “stop leaving the door ajar when you throw the dog outside” “will someone help me ajar this stinkin jar”. and “hatch”? are we driving a minivan or sailing a pirate ship to school. the only dude i have heard use the word “hatch” was Johnny Depp when he said “down the hatch” in a pirate movie. and i thought he was talking about someone’s mouth. so if the minivan is talking about someone’s mouth being open in the back of the van, then i can sympathize bc that’s the gospel. someone’s hatch is always ajar in the rear of our minivan. so i guess “rear hatch ajar” on baby….(i hate it when the van is smarter than the WalMart cashier checking me out.)

back to the obese piece of furniture. she bought a table big enough to seat a kenyan village and the duggars (family of 18) at the same time. dude it’s huge. and in our house it’s like the equivalent of me putting on an extra smedium shirt from children’s place clothing store. i felt like the table was wearing the kitchen instead of sitting in it…..and like a growing child, the table has already out grown it’s pants and the shirt buttons won’t even meet for coffee. it’s crazy big. i sit down at the table and feel like a hobbit. i have to stop myself from asking Frodo to pass the sugar. it’s like they took a bowling alley lane and put four legs on it. but on the plus side we can have the guys over to the house for bowling tourney sometime soon.

my wife sends me to the furniture store to pick up this redwood turned dining table. i get there and ask about someone helping load it….and the manager chuckles. “you couldn’t load this piece with two men. we have a crew in the back.” holly told me before i got there that it would fit in the back of van and might not close, barely. well barely turned into the rear door being more open than a 24hr supercenter. when the crew couldn’t get the table to fit they asked, “how far do you have to go?” i told them about twenty miles….and they give a “OOOHHH” in “your crap out of luck four part harmony”. (hopefully they will perform at my sons birthday party.)

they get the table loaded and bungee corded in and i am off. i can not remember the last time i felt that imminently close to being arrested. almost like i should have worn cuffs on the drive home to make it easy on them. so police officers could know what it was like to press the Staples Easy Button. i could not have been more illegal unless the table was made out of cocaine, cuban cigars and elephant ivory. on top of driving with the “rear hatch ajar” i lost a pink cowboy hat, assorted mcdonalds toys, and probably the cure for the common cold out of the back of the minivan. it’s amazing what you can find in your car where your kids sit on a routine basis. on top of all that, the road noise was amplified times 10. it sounded like a monster truck driving through a wind tunnel while whistling the theme to some obscure 80’s tv show theme song.

after losing copious amounts of sweat and kid car trash, i finally make it back home. we get it wedged in the kitchen and admire it’s beauty. you see, in a family of six, new furniture never looks the same after your kids start using it. so holly was more protective of the table than the KCF colonel is of the 11 herbs and spices. i am on the opposite end of the spectrum. i always like to get the worst case scenario out of the way so it’s not hanging over my head like doomsday. so i invited my son to urinate on the center of the table. kind of like a baptism into our family. but my wife declined.

so if you have any new furniture that needs to be initiated, i have a 4 yr old boy fueled up and ready to deploy. i had to apologize for getting him worked up for nothing and promise him, his day in the kitchen would come.

God Bless guys,

Jillian points at the window sticker on the blue Town and Country minivan in front of us. The sticke

Jillian points
at the window sticker on the blue Town and Country minivan in front of us. The sticker consists of a white stick figure family all with big smiling faces. “Look, Mommy! They have three kids and a dog!”
“Uh huh.” I say. I’ve begun to see this type of “family advertisement” everywhere and it irks me.

Ever since people began to drive automobiles marketers have carefully designed campaigns to associate a certain type of automobile with a certain type of person. We all know that mini-vans are “mom-mobiles” and that bald-headed men over 35 like to trade in sedans for flashy sports cars. (Ok, I know, not all moms drive mini-vans and not all bald-headed men drive sports cars– but, you get the point.)

But, now that the type of car one drives is not enough of a statement. There is a trend toward affixing identity banners to one’s car. We’ve all seen the “My Child is an Honor Student at (fill in the blank) school.” Some car owners prefer the vanity plate approach. I’ve nearly had car accidents trying to decipher them (i.e. “1 GR8MOM” and “2FST4U”). There are license plate holders trimmed in the names of colleges or other institutions (“U of Michigan Alumnae-Go Blue!”). Still others love those white oval stickers with the simple black lettering informing a passerby of where the driver vacations or has as second home -(PB) or (TI)- you figure it out.

Bumper stickers with peace signs, Barack Obama’s name, and all types of political, social and religious commentary are common-place as are the ever present Jesus fish metal car accessories. All contain pieces of information the car owner wants to convey about herself.

In the grocery store parking lot, I notice two other family-sticker cars. One, an SUV, has a mommy and daddy toting brief cases (double-income couple, I presume) and three boys: one with soccer ball, one with baseball bat and one with a guitar. An old green mini-van has a sticker with two dogs, one cat, a daddy who works, a mommy who runs, two daughters (one a tennis player and the other a dancer) and a baby of unknown gender.

The anorectic white figures (do they come in other colors?) get me thinking about my own family. It’s true that when asked (and aren’t we all asked way too often) what my kids “do,” I have a very clear answer. Alexa is a dancer, Claire dances too, but is also an artist, and Jillian plays piano (she just started, really) and dances. I finish off with, “and all three swim.”

When I walk away from these conversations, I have a yucky sense that I’m too quickly giving into convention by classifying my kids in this way. Of course my girls are so much more than an activity (that they may or may not like to do, but that they are committed to for a nine month period since deposits are non-refundable.)

Coming up with clear answers when asked who we are is part of our social make-up. It starts early on and never really ends. “Where do you/did you go to school?” “Where do you live?” “Where did you grow up?” “What temple/mosque/church do you attend?” “Are you a democrat?” “What do you do?” What we really want to know is: “Are you making more/less money than I am?” “Are you smarter, deeper, more religious or philanthropic than I am?” “Are you happier with your children, spouse or life?” “Are you having more/less sex?”

What I would really like to see is an honest stick figure sticker representation of an American family. Maybe it looks like this: Stick figure Daddy stressing over bills, stick figure Mommy laying exhausted on a sofa with a martini, stick figure big brother smoking pot in his bedroom, stick figure little brother hitting stick figure big sister who has cell phone stuck to her ear, and stick figure puppy making a stick figure poop on the living room carpet. That, along with one of those bumper stickers that reads: “Daddy Farted and We Can ‘t Get Out” really makes my day.

A intenção é reforçar o time contra o Renault Modus, o Citroën C3 Picasso e o Nissan Micra.

I thought at my age, I’d pretty much done all my “firsts”- first tooth, first day

I thought at my age, I’d pretty much done all my “firsts”- first tooth, first day of school, etc. You’d think by almost 35, I would have done all the mundane things in day-to-day life. The only things that would be firsts would be really outrageous events like jumping out of an airplane and skydiving (don’t count on seeing that one on this blog anytime soon. Ok, ever.) or going on a safari (that one I’m open to) or something like that.

Well, I’d like to announce that yesterday I…wait for it…drove through the car wash. Ok, I didn’t drive; I was in neutral just like you’re supposed to be. Yes, I went to the car wash, selected the basic wash and paid, and got my left tire in the little wheel track thing that takes your car through the wash. I’ve been married for almost 15 years and in all that time I have never personally taken a car to the car wash.

Which brings me to another realization. My DH Ash does all the car maintenance and yard work. I mowed the lawn a couple of times last year when we first moved to this house. That is the only time I have mown our grass. Ok, so I did mow at other points in our marriage when he was on deployment for 6 or 7 months, but if he’s around, he takes care of all that stuff. That is the reason why I have never taken the car to be washed. I have also never taken a car to the garage for work (alone, I mean. I have followed Ash to take him back home after he has dropped off a car) I also have never taken our car in for an oil change or tire rotation, etc. because he does all the stuff at home. Further, I have taken the fact that he does all this stuff totally for granted for about, oh, 15 years now.

Then, the other day, I said something about the van being pretty dirty after I had driven down a dirt road and how our cars never look that bad, or something to that effect. Ash said, in a very off-handed and casual way, “I usually always take care of it before they get like that.” or something similar. It hit me then how much he really does to take care of things around the house. Last weekend he went out to the garage, designed, then went and bought materials, and built shelving in our garage that would fit all our stuff and still be able to accomodate our cars.

After his comment I was on my own secret mission to get the car washed before he did. The funny part? I didn’t even know where to go. I mean, I knew to go to a car wash, but I didn’ t know where there was one. I was actually out and about a lot this week, so I started taking notice. I was driving down the road thinking, “Wow, I didn’t know that gas station had a car wash.” Another little tidbit to take into consideration is that I needed a car wash that took debit cards because I never have cash on me (ever.) and I wanted one that didn’t require me to get out of the car since I always have a little entourage with me. I sneakily casually asked Ash where he takes the cars when he goes, and he told me without even asking why. I felt like I was really pulling one over on him. I know, how much of a goody two shoes am I when asking where the car wash is feels devious? I picked the kids up after my women’s Bible study and told them we were going to the car wash. They have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the car wash. They think it sounds like fun, but once they’re there they find it a little daunting. We all made it through in one piece, including the van. I was feeling proud of myself. Now to see if Ash would notice.

Clearly he didn’t think my inaugural trip to the car wash was as big a deal as I did. I told him I went and his reply was, “Oh, good.” Well, maybe it wasn’t that big of a deal, but I felt like a did a little part (ok, very little part) in helping out with the cars.

So, have you had any small “firsts” since you’ve been an adult?
