Horse Hair Pottery by Lesley Witt

“The horse hair firing method is taken from the Native Americans who used this technique to honor a favorite horse or celebrate the birth of a horse.

I start by throwing my shape on the wheel. Once the piece is trimmed and dried, I coat it with many layers of terra sigillata, a slip of extremely fine clay particles. A hand buffing with a cloth creates a  glassy sheen. The piece is first bisque fired to 1900 degrees. Allowed to cool, the pot is then brought back to the kiln and refired to 1000 degrees.  At peak temperature, the hot piece is removed and I apply the horse hair by hand. The cinging hair on the heated surface creates the distinct look without the use of any glaze.”

Teaching plan: America ‘an oppressive hellhole’

University outlines ‘re-education’ for those who hold ‘wrong’ views

A program proposed at the University of Minnesota would result in required examinations of teacher candidates on “white privilege” as well as “remedial re-education” for those who hold the “wrong” views, according to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.

The organization, which promotes civil liberties on the campuses of America’s colleges and universities, has dispatched a letter to University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks asking him to intervene to prevent the adoption of policies proposed in his College of Education and Human Development.

“The university’s general counsel should be asked to comment as soon as possible,” said the letter from Adam Kissel, an officer with The FIRE. “If the Race, Culture, Class, and Gender Task Group achieves its stated goals, the result will be political and ideological screening of applicants, remedial re-education for those with the ‘wrong’ views and values, [and] withholding of degrees from those upon whom the university’s political reeducation efforts proved ineffective.”

By any “non-totalitarian” standards, he wrote, the the plans being made so far by the school are “severely unjust and impermissibly intrude into matters of individual conscience.”

Kissel wrote that it appears that the university “intends to redesign its admissions process so that it screens out people with the ‘wrong’ beliefs and values – those who either do not have sufficient ‘cultural competence’ or those who the college judges will not be able to be converted to the ‘correct’ beliefs and values even after remedial re-education.”

 

 

Today I had the privilege of meeting another lovely couple.  Brian and Andrea asked me to shoot their engagement photos in Stillwater.  They also wanted to include their six year old yellow lab, Haley.  Haley was perhaps the most excited to have her picture taken.  Because I know it is SO hard to wait for sneak peeks of pictures from a fun photo shoot, I had to post a few to share with Brian and Andrea.  I hope you two like what you see so far.  Even after spending only a couple hours with these two, I could really sense the love shared between them, and the utter joy they have when they are in the company of each other and Haley.

Har för det första bytt bort idrottsklassen, fanns inte direkt någonting att byta till så min tränare pratade med vägledaren så nu har jag study hall med honom kan man nog kalla det och Abby har TA med en annan lärare vilket är som en lärarassistent så dem lärarna har väl som pratat ihop sig att vi två kan sitta in the media center och göra vad vi vill ungefär.

Mer då? En vecka kvar av trimestern fem dagar, lektionerna rullar väl på, idrottsklassen kommer jag inte vara med på resten av veckan anledningen kommer lite senare. Interior design syr vi väl lapptäcken skulle man nog kunna kalla det, går rätt bra för mig faktiskt nästan klar så det är bra
Historian är väl sista andningen lite ont om tid för vi började precis på franska revolutionen som vi skulle hinna klart med. För övrigt om jag inte har sagt det tidigare älskar jag min historia klass bortsätt från att det är historia vill säga, min lärare är rätt tråkig och väldigt entonig när han pratar så ungefär allt han säger efter ett tag blir hur kul som helst. Vi kommer alltid in på saker som inte direkt har något med historia att göra heller. Så det är alltid nått nytt ämne, jag har nog varit ämnet flest gånger faktiskt skulle jag tro, som bland annat en gång när det var helt tyst och alla för en gångs skull satt och gjorde det vi skulle utbrast en kille YEY!!! She’s from Finland, alla tittade upp på honom som att han är knäpp och sa på samma gång She’s swedish idiot. Alla började skratta och efter ett tag så utbrast samma kille YEY!!! She’s from Sweden!
Vad har det mer pratats om? jo, hockey matcher, så TK killen som det handlade om tidigare frågade hur många utvisningar jag fick på matchen dagen innan så jag svarade att jag fick två alla vände sig om och tittade på mig och frågade vad jag blev utvisad för jag svarade alla blev tysta tittade omkring och i en kör The Swede is playing hard. Mitt nya smeknamn förövrigt används väl ungefär överallt av alla. Sen en annan gång frågade TK “Can you speak some Sweden? It sounds so cool!” alla skrattade och sa att det är swedish och inte sweden så blev en diskussion om det. Ja, inte den smartaste människan man har att göra med där inte, och det var bara under en vecka haha.
Journalistik Vad gör vi där, jo, just för tillfället sitter vi och redigerar videor i grupper, sen eftersom det är min tränare som har den klassen pratas det alltid hockey oftast blir det jag, Mr. Johnson och Andy som kommer in på hockey och det håller väl på ett tag.
Foods of the world där lagar vi väl mest bara mat för tillfället, gissar att det är de vi kommer göra resten av tiden också, inget ansträngande direkt.

Eh.. nått mer som har med skolan att göra..? Jo, en kille som tydligen alla har nått emot som jag inte riktigt vet varför men i alla fall går runt och blockerar vägen om jag ska någonstans i korridorerna om han möter mig och lägger till kommentaren “Body Checking”  normalt haha, fast är rätt kul faktiskt.

Hockey

Har inte direkt gått bra för laget direkt. Spelat fyra matcher förlorat alla var av den vi spelade senaste förlorade vi 1-12 inte något att hurra över direkt. Jag har dock bara spelat tre matcher, som har resulterat 2 utvisningar, 2 ass och en mild hjärnskakning. Så där har vi anledningen till att det inte kommer vara några mer idrottslektioner den här veckan för mig. Är bara en mild så jag kommer vara borta ungefär en vecka om jag inte blir mycket bättre att jag mår helt bra och åker till doktorn och får ett tidigare lagt klar tecken. Kan inte direkt påstå att det känns så ljust just nu, har haft huvudvärk, yrsel, mått illa och haft att synen försvunnit lite då och så sedan i tisdags, och jag mår fortfarande inte ett dugg bättre, snarare att vissa av sakerna blir bättre medans andra sämre. Men det blir nog bra snart. 
Vi har en liten miniturnering nu fredag-lördag, hoppas på att det blir en mycket bättre match lördag än den som var fredag.  För mig blir det att sitta på läktaren och ta olika statistik.
Kan säga att jag verkligen tycker om mitt lag, känner mig verkligen med i laget och alla är jättesnälla, alla föräldrar är också hur trevliga som helst. Så på matchen som var va det en mamma som var, vart är nr 17 jag kan inte hitta henne. Så jag sa att här är jag, så hon frågade varför jag inte spelade så svarade på det, och hon sa “I really like watching you play, you really play in a new way for the team and it makes it more fun to watch” sen kom hennes man och h0n sa att jag var “the swede” haha.

Happy thanksgiving weekend everyone!

This year I am especially thankful for a spontaneous life, an amazing, fun, talented, and supportive family and community of friends, the privilege to join the vibrant Fletcher community and work towards a graduate degree in Law and Diplomacy, and last but not least, the most delicious, nutritious thanksgiving meal ever, falling just behind my mom’s annual spread.

Shout out to Baby Ace for partying like a rockstar on his first thanksgiving on earth with mom, dad, and the “R Street Hunnies Family Night Crew”!

Back in Boston the weather’s chilly and rainy, and starting to feel more like winter.  Thought I’d share some fall foliage and fun snapshots before the snow starts to stick.

The first few are from an annual fall festival called Honk!Fest – groups of “activist bands” – mostly horns, playing in the squares all weekend and marching from Davis Square through Somerville to Harvard Square in Cambridge on a gorgeous fall day in October.

Each year Honk!festers set the Davis neighborhood afire with their shiny, bold brass and the sounds of horns honking throughout the streets.  I spent one perfect fall day off the grad school grid to follow the Honk! festival, enjoying the May Day -esque celebration, watching parade of political puppetry and listening to the activist brass bands.

My last few edits of Bergen and Jake.  Happy Thanksgiving.

I did very well on my picks yesterday.  The problem was I relied too much on parlays again.

I went 2-1 on the NFL games and 2-0 on the NHL games.  The problem was I lost all 3 NFL parlays because of the Giants. I still managed to break even but you shouldn’t just be breaking even if your record is 4-1 (80%).

I could blame the lackluster Giants for blowing my parlays but the truth of the matter is I got too greedy and overconfident. I parlayed my picks, then I did a 6pt teaser in case they didn’t quite cover the spread, then I parlayed the games straight up. I was conifident the Giants would win, I just wasn’t confident in Dallas winning by 14.

Here is the lesson: Never play a parlay unless you can make up for the loss by winning about 65% of your picks.

In otherwords, I should have been able to at least break even as long as 2 teams won.  Instead, I had to rely on my NHL games to bring me back up. With a winning percentage currently at 75-80%, covering losses with a 65% winning rate is reasonable.

Anyway, we got some good games coming up today in NHL and NBA. I’ll give you all my picks later this afternoon but here are some games to start your day. I’ll have some NCAA football picks for you later today as well.

NBA: Phoenix vs Minnesota: PHO -9.5

This game is strong enough to play straight. No buying points needed today.

Straight up parlay: PHO, POR, BOS, SAC

These games are strong enough to play straight up but I give no guarantees on spreads (other than the Suns, which I still don’t “guarantee,” obviously). I’d especially stay clear of Boston’s spread as they are in an 0-6 ATS rut and 2-10 in their last 12 games ATS.

NHL:

Atlanta vs Carolina SU (-115)

This is one of the strongest games in my NHL GF System, but one of the lowest moneylines. 

Parlay: ATL (vs CAR), CHI (vs ANA), PHI (vs BUF), FLOR (vs TOR)

I usually just do parlays with NHL because it’s too hard to play the spreads and the lines are often too much to make it worth while.  I like these picks though as the Thrashers (ATL) are 7-2-1 on the road (Carolina is 3-0 at home in it’s last 3 games but all were to losing teams), Chicago’s Hossa had a strong debut with 2 goals and should continue his dominance, the Flyers are getting Briere back and looked strong even without him, and Florida is 5-0-3 since Nov 12th and 4-0 against Toronto in their last 4 meetings(The Panthers have lost 3 straight at home but all were in OT, and all were to winning teams).

Thanksgiving was celebrated in full American fashion with dressing, turkey, mashed potatoes, salads, pumpkin and pecan pie, the WORKS!!!  Thanks to my long time friends from Minnesota, Kim and Erik, I was hosted with 30 other people. 

Almost like home where we sang and laughed and carried on, almost like I was back with my own family in Minnesota.  Thanks Kim and Erik and thanks for getting the bird, what a sacrifice he made! Now I have my Christmas tree up with all the decorations and have pulled out my Christmas cards from last year.  I’m ready to enjoy a less busy pace of life once all classes and meetings are done and grades turned in.  Tomorrow I’ll show the photos from the Culture Festival at our university where many of my undergraduate students participated.  Busy times, but fun ones as the Kazakhs celebrate Kurbanait or KURBAN AYT (Eid al-Adha) holiday today and tomorrow.

Nail biting you got me again!  It hurts after you get to where the nail is connected with the rest of the finger, but how else do you grossly and awkwardly halt boredom?  I’ve heard of bitter stuff you put on your nails to get you to stop biting them, but that reminds me a little too much of sour apple spray you train a dog with.

I’ve been way too late since whenever I first wrote about my lack of sleep due to not sleeping and then waking up early.  Recently, I’ve been trying to put together my ideal soundtrack for what would play during Grizzly Skag Bear.

It just goes to show that if you know the right people, even the most untalented people in the world can get a job where they get to meet and interview cool people, cool bands, and all without any hint of personality or anything that would add anything to the conversations.  The stereotypical “frat boy” image wasn’t cool or funny or entertaining to begin with, but you kept on with it.  Did you just hear laughter at one of your “jokes”…. No?  Neither did I.  Naturally, you’re on Twitter, with nothing to say.

Out of sight, out of mind right?  As soon as I get back to Bloomington, and see a few people I haven’t in a while, Winona is hardly an after thought.  I can focus again.  I even did homework on a holiday.  Sadly, the movie will have to wait until some other priorities are taken care of.  Yes, I discovered what those are.

A friend of  mine introduced me to The Avett Brothers, and their album I and Love and You.  The title track is incredible.  I could listen to it for days straight and not get sick of it.  The rest of the album is just as good.  Those guys prove that bands today do give a shit about the music they make and produce.  If I could, I would open the movie with one of their songs.

Thanksgiving was great.  I talked to a lot of relatives I don’t normally get to talk with regularly.  It’s felt like a lot longer day than it’s really been, but thats most likely from the food.

Most of the local outlets aren’t covering this, but Minneapolis KARE11 News is reporting on the “euthanasia” of a local police K-9:

At ten years of age, Felony was nearing the end of his K-9 career with the Howard Lake Police Department. It just wasn’t supposed to end like this.

On October 30th, one of Felony’s handlers found that the black labrador had escaped his kennel.  He immediately called the Wright County Humane Society, who reported that they didn’t have the dog.

The County wasn’t aware that Felony had been picked up by a dog catcher working for the Animal Humane Society (AHS) not long after he escaped.

“Our officer contacted the Animal Humane Society shortly after contacting the dog catcher, said Chief Tracy Vetruba. “Unfortunately, at that time the dog catcher still had the dog, who he did not believe was our dog, and it ‘was’ our dog.”

Felony had somehow lost his license and rabies tags — and he had never been micro-chipped.  Thinking that their original calls to Wright County Humane Society and Animal Humane Society were sufficient to alert them to the dog, the Howard Lake police did not make any follow-up phone calls.  So, when he arrived at the Animal Humane Society Felony was placed on 5 day mandatory hold.  During the hold time he was labeled as “dangerous and unadoptable” — so at the end of his hold time, the police dog was killed.

The Howard Lake Herald-Journal reported that the dog was described to AHS and Wright County as being a black labrador.  Since he’s a working dog who’s almost eleven, Felony has a grey muzzle and paws — which reportedly made Kozitka believe he was not the “all black” K-9 he had just been asked to look for.  Why he didn’t think it was important to notify the police department of any black labs or substantially black lab-like dogs he picked up on this particular day is beyond me.  AHS skips out of the blame game by stating they have no record of calls from the police department providing a BOLO on Felony.  I’d love to see their phone records for October… 

KARE11 quotes Police Chief Tracy Vetruba:

“It’s kindof like the perfect storm of events coming together to result in a (sic)tradedy,” said Vetruba. “Our officers were devastated to learn that he was put down. He will absolutely be missed by our officers.”

I suppose a callous disregard for the life of a valuable police K-9 on the part of those whose jobs are (supposedly) to safeguard our community’s animals could be considered as part of a “perfect storm”.   I just see it as blatant, cold-hearted callousness. 

CityPages reports:

Howard Lake police say Felony had been with the force since 2002, after K-9 stints in Ortonville and Hector, and was responsible for more than $25,000 worth of seized drugs, cars  and cash.

This dog spent his life serving the community.  And he didn’t do it for a salary, benefits and a pension — he did his job for the pure joy of it.  What a sad and pointless waste. 

First I’m utterly gobsmacked that the City of Howard Lake couldn’t find the time or money to microchip a $5,000 police K-9.  Second, as dog owning (and tax paying) resident of Minnesota, I’m also deeply troubled by the callous attitude taken by Wright County dog catcher Wayne Kozitka and AHS.  If they make so little effort to identify and return a valuable local police K-9 that they’ve specifically been asked to look for — what kind of treatment can an average pet owner expect?

We’ve blogged here before about AHS’s disturbingly high kill rates.  I couldn’t find information on their website about the methods AHS uses to assess the adoptability of dogs in their care, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find that they use some version of Susan Sternberg’s test.  Sternberg’s Asses-A-Pet program recommends testing a dog for “food aggression” by poking it with a fake hand while it’s eating.  A picture of one of these hands is shown below – next to a picture of the kind of bite sleeve commonly used to train police K-9s.

Take a good, long look at those two pictures and tell me how shocked you’d be to find that a shelter stressed dog who has had any protection training might take one look at the item on the left and confuse it for the one on the right.  And then explain to me how a group who was specifically asked to be on the lookout for a lost black labrador who is a police K-9 doesn’t think to contact them when a short-coated black dog who likes to bite sleeves is seized the day after the loss is reported (oh, thats right – they never got the message [head-desk]).

Felony gave his life for his community.  Instead of dying a heroic death during a drug raid or tracking down a violent criminal – he died a sad and pointless death alone in a shelter death room.  Instead of being lauded as a hero, he’ll be mourned as a “mistake”.   …it breaks my heart…

To help protect these wonderful, valuable, four-legged public servants from similar pointless cluster fucks mishaps in the future, Midwest Animal Rescue & Services has offered free micro-chipping and registration for police dogs across the Twin Cities metro area.  Show them a little love.
