My friend Joao told me something interesting a couple of months ago and I never thought it would be

My friend Joao told me something interesting a couple of months ago and I never thought it would be applicable to the recent Hong Kong trip I had with my family:

“Color is how you see the world and Black and White is how you feel it.”

Perhaps it was the answer I was looking for. Since I started photography, I always liked shooting in Color than in BW. I always thought that photography should and ought to capture reality but then again, purists are in favor of BW because it removes the emotional effect of color. It’s all about the subject and light that is reflected on him which makes BW harder to shoot. It’s either that or because i’m a Joel Meyerowitz fan boy.

In the said Hong Kong trip, on my Minolta XG-9 is Fuji Superia Xtra 400 and on the Zorki-C is Kodak BW 400 CN. The difference in the subjects I took and the mood of the photographs somewhat gives credence to my friend’s statment. So let’s take a closer look at how I saw Hong Kong.

HK has probably the best transport system that I have ever seen in the world. Their trains are fast, the busses are not filled to the brim…

…and their are plenty of seats in their ferry station unlike in Pasig. Although not everyone rides in the Ferry of Pasig River because of the polluted waters here.

Champagne Court is the home of the Famous Champagne Court Cowboys as they are called in some fourms. Although there is a good cowboy there, David Chan of David Chan Camera. The Dude is awesome and even talked to me in Tagalog.

I wonder why this girl was sitting alone in the sidewalks of Nathan Road. Her legs was nicely lit though..

This was a bit mean. That there is my sister and I intentionally didn’t meter for her but just metered the sleeping panda behind here hehehehe

There is a running joke in Rangefinderfilipinas forums that they will bring a Large Format cam on the streets… Apparently, this guy already did it.

This was almost the same location as the earlier shot of Champagne Court but this was in the morning. HK isn’t as busy as it is in the early morning (around 7am or 8am)

But it is busy at night and the afternoons.

I guess this wouldn’t work if the shot was in Color. Hong Kong has dark alleyways too.

And this will probably work better if it was shot in Color than BW.

I guess at the end of the day, you just have to follow your vision and then fulfill it wether it is post processing in Lightroom or Converting a color negative to BW in Photoshop. Color will always show the beauty of your world and your surroundings while Black and white will always show the beautiful light that hits your subject.

You are the artist, it’s up to you to fulfill your vision.

Thanks much,

Sent the Fed 2 off to Fedka this week for a CLA and a look at the light leaks that showed up toward the end of the test roll. I’m hoping there’s no need for a shutter replacement. Between the Zorki 1 sent to Oleg and this trip, these two FSU are strating to add up.I decide to give the two shops with the best reputations on the various FSU forums. The prices are comparable, with Oleg coming in a bit lower even with the shipping to Russian and back. The advantage with Fedak is that the work is being done in New York, so I sould have the camera back much quicker. All in all, if they come back as solid users, the money will be worth it. Seems like I spend more time finding out what’s wrong with my cameras and getting them fxed than shooting picture.

In the mean time, I’m carrying around my Hi-Matic E. I’ve got it powered with a 3v Lithium cell cr1/3n which fits perfectly in one battery slot. I’ve got a wad of tin foil completing the circuit in the other slot. Seems to be working fine, although I’m still on my first roll with this set up. It’s nice to have a camera with a light meter for a change, although this one is fully automatic. Quick shooting, but no control.

Umlabeln war also damals schon hipp.

Zeit für was neues. Wir schreiben mittlerweile das Jahr 1995. Eine neue Kamera muss her.

AGFA weg und Olympus her.

Was war passiert? Die Lust verloren? Stress? Wenig Zeit? Kreativlosigkeit? Andere Interessen?

“Da ist doch was falsch!”

I got another roll of 35mm developed from the old Minolta today. I had a much higher ISO setting than the last set as most of them were taken indoors.

My fiance

Self-portrait

These two both have a strange bluish tint to them. The first one of my fiance is a bit foggy looking almost. I think both of these problems are from the fluorescent light.

DVD's

This picture was in a different building. The lights were a bit darker, but it still has the strange blue tint.

Cat

Sizing Up

The first picture is of my friends cat, Drew. It was shot last night with an ISO of 3200 and a shutter speed of 1/60, if I remember correctly. A lot of the color definition on his back was lost as a result of the higher noise levels and lack of white balance.

The second picture are two of my friends. It was shot at the same setting. There isn’t as much color definition lost, however there is still a very high noise level.

Fall in Ashland

This final picture is most likely the only one that was presentable from the set. Obviously, being taken outdoors, I was able to use a much lower ISO setting and a faster shutter speed, greatly reducing noise. The natural light also helped with the white balance.

I really enjoy using this 35mm. Once I got used to having to wind the film after every shot and not being able to review, I started having a lot of fun with it. I enjoy pushing the boundaries with it and then looking at the results, thinking about how much better the images would have been if I’d used my 350D.

Minolta vs. Canon

Functionality – Obviously I have way more options when setting up the 350D. I can control metering, filtering, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, mirror, exposure, and several other little things. With the Minolta all I can set is the aperture, ISO, and shutter speed.

Results – Since there are so many different options to counterbalance almost any obstacle with the DSLR, the results are typically a lot more defined.

Noise – The Minolta has a much higher ISO setting than the 350D (6400 vs. 1600), however the 350D handles noise much better at the 1600 setting than the Minolta.

Color – Since I have a customizable white balance on the 350D, the colors quite often come out much better than they do on the Minolta.

All in all, I’ll probably keep shooting with the Minolta in my spare time. All of my equipment came from it, so I have flashes and different lenses that I can use. It’ll be fun to see what else I can get from it!

It’s been a while since we’ve posted a blog, so let’s talk about something important that many people ask me.

“Steve, what camera should I buy?”

Unfortunately there is no right answer for everyone, but there might be a right answer for you.

Lenses

Decide what lenses you’d like to have in the next 5-10 years. Price them out and read the reviews. It’s a lot of work, I know, but a camera purchase can be a big decision.

What kind of lenses do you eventually want? If you want to do landscapes, you want a nice wide lens, like a 10-15 mm. If you want to do Wedding Photography, you want a fast zoom lens, like a 70-200mm 2.8. If you want to shoot insects and flowers, you’ll want a macro lens. If you’re indecisive on what you want to shoot, a zoom lens that spans the gamut might be a wise idea, such as a 20-200mm.

Check out kenrockwell.com for some reviews and general pricing.

Lens Compatibility

Choosing a DSLR should be a long-term investment. If you become serious about photography, over your photography life, you will invest in many (and some expensive) lenses. Once you’ve made these commitments, it will be hard to switch to a different manufacturer.

Do you have any old lenses already? Do your friends have dSLRs, and will you be able to borrow their lenses? Do you intend to buy used lenses? These questions should navigate you towards a brand to purchase.

For example, (as far as I know) a Pentax dSLR camera can use any old Pentax lens. There are quite a few old, rock-solid Pentax lenses out in the used market to choose from, at reasonable prices.

Sony Alpha cameras can use Minolta lenses dating back to 1985. There are quite a few used Minolta lenses on the market.

Olympus dSLRs have some backwards compatibility with older lenses, but they need a special adapter.

Canon EOS dSLR cameras can use EF labeled lenses that were first manufactured in the 80s.

Nikon dSLRs can use just about any Nikon 35mm lens, so long as you purchase a mid to high-end dSLR (D80 or better). The entry level dSLRs are only compatible with DX type lenses.

Even if a lens is not compatible, you may be able to mount it on your camera, but use it in Manual focus mode. Just do some Google-ing for compatibility before you try to mount a mystery lens.

Third party vendors

The biggest dSLR manufacturers are hands-down Nikon and Canon. So if you are a third party manufacturer, you will at least make components for these brands, but perhaps not for the smaller brands. That is the reason why there are more third party products available for these two brands. If you are looking for more selection from companies other than the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), you may want to stick with Canon or Nikon.

Examples of third party components are batteries, flashes, grips, wireless triggers for flashes, remote triggers, flash accessories (like softboxes), etc.

Camera quality

As far as the quality of the images from dSLR manufacturers, you can’t go wrong. Any of the big dSLR manufacturers can produce great pictures. The differences are more in the lenses available and the lens quality, rather than the camera body itself.

Features

Every camera manufacturer and model markets different features. You need to decide what features are important to you. For example, video, ISO capabilities (how well does your camera shoot in low light), live view (being able to see what you are shooting on the LCD – on most dSLRs you need to use the viewfinder).

Rent!

There are many companies that will rent cameras and lenses. If you plan to buy an expensive camera, rent it first. e.g. Try out the interface for a Canon and a Nikon, and see which one you find more intuitive. dSLRs are more similar than different, but their interfaces can be significantly different.

There are companies, like LensRentals.com, that specialize in renting. And some camera stores, such as Henry’s (Headshots) and Vistek in Canada, have renting services.

What I use and why

I shoot Nikon. I have both a Nikon D40x and a Nikon D90.

I originally bought the D40x because I had some old lenses, and sticking with Nikon would give me a wider lens selection in my arsenal.

I then purchased the D90 for the following reasons. The D90 has support for older lenses in which the D40x (etc) does not. Being able to use auto-focus with prime lenses like the 50mm was important for me. The D90 has great low light capabilities. Nikon is the only major manufacturer that allows for wireless flash triggering without any additional hardware to be purchased. (You can do wireless flashes on a Canon using their add-on wireless triggers, or with any manufacturer using Pocket Wizards, but that is a significant additional cost). Having HD video was a nice to have, but not a necessity. The higher-end Canon cameras have better video capabilities than the Nikons, and can produce 1080 video versus 720 video (not an issue for me, but it might be for you). And the price for this unit was quite reasonable.

On the negative side of my purchase, Canons are more prominent than Nikon. It seems that the prices for Canon lenses are slightly lower (but close), however the Nikons do boast a wider selection of used lenses compatible with the D90 (etc).

Summary

Basically there will be good reasons and bad reasons to buy any camera. Each manufacturer has its strengths and weaknesses, as well as its marketing focus.

Choose from one of the major manufacturers if you want some long-term commitment that they’ll still be in the dSLR business a few years from now.

Start with an entry level dSLR if you are unsure how committed you will be to photography. The prices are very reasonable these days, and an entry level camera’s quality of pictures is practically as good as a high-end camera’s. A higher end camera will have more bells and whistles, and will be designed to be easier to use for a professional (but probably harder to use if you are just starting out). Once you’ve mastered the low-end camera, you can decide to invest in a better one, and still keep the lenses you’ve acquired!

The good news is you really can’t go wrong.

(Footnote: Since I am a Nikon shooter, my information on other manufacturers is strictly hearsay and based on knowledge from the internet, fellow photographers, and casual observation. If I’m wrong about something pertaining to another manufacturer, please let me know).

I recently started using an ancient 35mm Minolta camera that I found at my parent’s house. I

I recently started using an ancient 35mm Minolta camera that I found at my parent’s house. I’d played around with it a bit in middle school, but I’d never really gotten to know all the different settings. I picked it up when I was down in Dayton over the weekend and took it out yesterday and fired a few shots.

It took me a while to get used to the difference between this SLR and my Canon DSLR. The biggest things were winding the film and not being able to review my pictures after I took them. Once I got past that, I think I did okay.

2009-10-21, Leaves on a building

2009-10-21, The Old Church

I took these at around 6:00 p.m. on October 21. Most of the pictures I took from the shoot were in daylight, although I did go back and fire off a few low-level shots. I cranked the camera ISO up to about 1600 and set the shutter speed at 1/30.

2009-10-21, Laptop and Keyboard

2009-10-21, Miscellaneous Things on my Desk

I really like the way that the low light shots came out. They have a sort of older feel to them, caused by the adjusted brightness and lack of adjustable white balance. The noise was rather heavy, especially considering what my DSLR would capture at a 1600 ISO.

The full set can be found here.
