Benvolguts amics,

Ja hi tornem a ser! Avui a les 22:00 h podreu escoltar La Pedalera que, com sempre, vindrà carregat de bona música. A continuació teniu les raons per les quals no us podeu perdre el programa d’aquesta nit. Son aquestes:

- Entrevista: aquesta nit tenim el plaer d’entrevistar a Dani Flaco. L’artista de Bellvitge ens parlarà, entre moltes altres coses, del concert que donarà el pròxim divendres al Casino de Vic.

- Do it yourself: amb grups com Nofx, Minor Threat o Fugazi; l’Iris Palou ens farà un recorregut que va del punk al hardcore a més a més de parlar-nos del moviment straight edge.

- Mes enllà del so: avui en Ramón Castro ve ben carregat. Ens parlarà del disc Imperfectos de Manolo Tarancón. Un altre disc serà l’anomenat Cartografias de José Ignacio Lapido. I també ens parlarà de la nova promesa del rock madrileny, Vikxie.

- Eclipsa: avui l’Ester Ferre trencarà un pel amb la tònica a la que ens tenia acostumats i ens portarà una crònica del concert al que va assistir aquest dissabte. I entre els molts concerts que es van fer dissabte… a quin creieu que va anar? Doncs a Depeche Mode.

- A banda: en Zeus Díaz ens portarà també una crònica d’una banda espectacular, els Porcupine Tree. Després d’això ens parlarà de Poncho K.

- Agenda: avui l’actualitat musical, de la mà de Jordi Gonzàlez, passa per El niño de la hipoteca, Maria Rodés, Alex Guideón, Las Furias i El Bicho.

- Top 5: el rànquing format per les maquetes d’artistes i bandes que mica en mica anem rebent a La Pedalera.

Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat fame was just one of the members of this influential band. Aside from writing great music and intense live performance, Fugazi strongly regulated the price of their CD’s often printing the price directly on the artwork to prevent retailers from price gouging fans. They had a huge, dedicated fan base despite the fact that they sold no merchandise at live shows or received any notable radio-play outside of college stations. They were dedicated to the music, and that’s what they did well.

Way to rip off "And Out Come the Wolves", asshole.

This is the kind of music that makes having powerful speakers a worthy and noble goal. Before Ian MacKaye was busy being the over-achieving father of post-punk, back when he was a teenager and age hadn’t dulled his fury, he was the frontman for Minor Threat, a hardcore punk band formed out of the ashes of a band he had been involved in earlier (Teen Idles). Starting in 1980, right at the beginning of the hardcore punk explosion in the United States, they would achieve moderate success in their region but later be recognised as one of the best examples of hardcore in its primal state.

And it is primal. Pure rage, distilled anger. Thrillingly furious with the way things are in his world, and shouting about how it. There’s just something about angry music that makes it beautiful. So now I shall review their self-titled and debut EP.

Filler

Opens slowly, with a drum fill to Ian screaming What happened to you, you’re not the same. There’s something in your head, made a violent change. Apparently he wrote this about a close friend who turned into fundamentalist. He also blasts people looking to fall in love and live happily ever after: Was she really worth it / She cost you your life / She’ll never leave your side / She’ll be your wife … You call it romance, you’re full of shit. Right away, one of my favourite songs on the album, as it tackles that kind of absolute devotion (to a person or a religion) that warps a person – the kind of devotion I tend to find disturbing, so I can entirely agree with him on this. One thing you notice immediately is that these guys rock: not content with just playing fast and shouting loud, they also play effective riffs and have a good interplay between instruments.

I Don’t Wanna Hear It

Ah, my favourite song from Minor Threat. Bass opens, guitar smashes everything, Ian tells us he doesn’t want to hear it. The verse describes those lying, self-aggrandising, ego-stroking people who just don’t ever shut up. The chorus sees the song get a little sparser, with the refrain: I don’t wanna hear it, know you’re full of shit / I don’t wanna hear it, no it’s bullshit. I think the first is the correct lyrics but the second certainly have something going for them.  Unbelievably, in the third verse they amp up the rock again, with even more direct lyrics: Shut your fucking mouth, I don’t care what you say. The telling-off of a lifetime in When the fuck are you gonna realise and the song closes with an amusing Aww, shut up! Can squeeze one more mention of how much these guys rock? Also, the bassline for the chorus kicks ass. Listen to it, hear it, love it.

Seeing Red

Ain’t nobody making hardcore music like these guys. Continuing the theme of bass starting the song, we get a few bars of the bassline before the heavily overdriven guitar comes in over the top. The guitar develops into its riff and Ian starts screaming, almost incoherently and a little out of step with the band. Hehe, out of step. Sorry, Minor Threat joke. After fumbling through the verse the whole song just snaps together with the chorus: Red! I’m seeing, Red! I’m seeing, Red! More incoherent rock into the chorus again, then the coda turns the chorus on its head by extending the Red! into Reeeeed! I am a big fan of that all-out finish, where they take the chorus and pump it full of extra energy, add lines, or add complexity.

Straight Edge

Has a band ever regretted a song as much as Minor Threat regrets this song? In just 45 seconds of music they single-handedly created an entire subculture – straightedge. And what a subculture. Don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t do drugs, don’t fuck. At least, don’t fuck promiscously. Okay, fuck heaps, but don’t do any of that other stuff. You would think that telling people not to have sex would turn them away from the movement; it didn’t. Edgers soon began to refuse legal drugs such as painkillers, stimulants like the caffeine in coffee (these guys pretty much drank water at shows and got their high from beating people up) and probably refused medical treatment with drugs, knowing those crazy guys. Ian never wanted to start a movement; Minor Threat’s message was to think for yourself instead of following the crowd and doing drugs. Instead, in a very short time, angry and physically imposing punks were running with Xs on their hands, swatting bottles and cups out of peoples’ hands. It must have been like giving birth to a baby and watching it turn into an Alien that eats your husband. The song itself is pretty simple – I’ve got straight edge so if we come up against each other in the pit, I’m sober and clear-headed and you’re wasted off your face, I am going to beat you.

Small Man Big Mouth

Clearly Ian’s met a small man who tends to boast a lot, and it pissed him off enough to write a song. Seems like it doesn’t take much to rile him up. Why does he feel like he has to yell at everything he doesn’t like? Surely it’s enough to simply dislike it. Empty barrels make the most noise, Ian. You better be happy with what you got. Ian stands five feet nine inches tall according to Wikipedia. Maybe he was wearing 5 inch heels? Some people think this song is unintentionally self-directed. I couldn’t tell you what they are talking about.

Screaming at a Wall

You won’t hear my words, no matter how loud I shout. The guitar fumbles around the riff, with rough transitions. The bass doesn’t seem to be able to quite keep up, and the drums are just mental. Musically there is a small improvement over the beginning of the album: we get a breakdown in the middle! For some weird reason it reminds me of We’re Only Gonna Die’s breakdown. Even though Bad Religion came after. The breakdown in this song, though, is pure music: Ian starts his mangled shouting up at the end and they kick it back into top gear for the finish.

Bottled Violence

More anti-alcohol attitudes – get the drunk punks out of the pit! Lose control of your body / Beat the shit out of somebody / Half shut eyes don’t see who you hit / But you don’t take any shit. A tirade against alcohol-fuelled aggression. Amusingly enough, this song starts with the sound of a bottle being smashed – the only sound effect on the entire album.

Minor Threat

The entire ideology of the band can be summed up in the first lines of their namesake song: We’re not the first, and I hope we’re not the last. This song is a youth anthem in the purest sense, warning the young ones not to rush into adult life. The time is so little, the time belongs to us. They coin their own name in the pre-chorus Try not to forget / We never will / We’re just a Minor Threat! The song’s riff is decent enough, and they derive their chorus from it by speeding it up sloppily. Even though it’s only 1 minute 30 seconds long, it’s longer than most songs on the album and with the transitions, feels too long for band. It is nevertheless powerful and energising throughout. The play on words is between a minor threat – nothing to worry about – and minor threat – the threat of young people (minors) having some sort of youth-oriented revolution. The song ends chillingly with the spoken words: But it’s a promise and a half-hearted, almost menacing laugh.

An extremely powerful album – not moving or compelling as much as it makes you want to scream and shout too. The rage directed at everything bad is refreshing – he’s not trying to change it, not trying to justify it or show that it’s wrong, he’s just venting his hatred of it. More than anything else, this music is cathartic, and a listen-through of the record leaves you feeling exhausted but with a slow-burning hate, like a well-stoked fire.

Party girls getting straightedge tattoos to commemorate a superstitious holiday. There has to be one word for this, and irony wont work. The icing on the cake was when; one girl asked her friend if they could get drunk now they were done. Have a good Friday the 13th.

Autant vous avertir tout de suite, on a affaire là à un chef-d’œuvre qui ravira au plus haut point tous les fans de punk/hardcore ! Tout récemment sorti en DVD dans nos contrées, mais malheureusement disponible uniquement en zone 1, ce documentaire d’une centaine de minutes, récompensé au dernier Toronto International Film Festival, vaut son pesant de cacahuètes… Il faut avant tout savoir que ce documentaire de Paul Rachman est basé sur le livre “American Hardcore : A tribal history” de Steven Blush, sorti en 2001 et retraçant l’âge d’or du hardcore ricain entre 1980 et 1986. Pour son documentaire, Rachman, avec l’aide de Blush, a sillonné pendant quatre ans les USA afin de retrouver les principaux acteurs du mouvement ! Quel bonheur donc de pouvoir entendre en interview et en live entre autres Paul « HR » Hudson des Bad Brains, Ian McKaye, Henry Rollins ou encore John Joseph ou Harley Flanagan. L’autre aspect du film qui m’a totalement soufflé, c’est la richesse des images d’archives collectées ! Jamais je n’aurais imaginé pouvoir voir en DVD des extraits live de groupes tels que SSD, MDC, DOA, Circle Jerks ou encore Uniform Choice… Cela permet de se rendre compte de la folie et de la hargne de cette mouvance à sa naissance, et surtout à quel point le message à caractère politique et/ou social était important, aspect que trop peu de groupes ont hérité dans les générations qui suivent ! Justement, un des autres intérêts majeurs du doc, c’est qu’il va au-delà de la musique pour nous expliquer dans quel contexte socio-politique finalement tout cela est né. Et l’on peut quasi arriver à la conclusion que sans Ronald Reagan, le hardcore n’aurait purement et simplement pas existé ! En effet, les kids du début des 80’s, fatigués par le courant dominant prôné par la Maison Blanche mettant en avant l’individualisme, le conformisme, la superficialité et la cupidité s’organisent autour de cette communauté musicale naissante qu’est le hardcore… Cette dernière, née du cadavre encore chaud du punk anglais, revendique le DIY (do-it-yourself), rejette le consumérisme aveugle, organise des shows, produit elle-même ses discs et pochettes, s’organise et crée des liens à travers tout le pays, rejette la culture populaire et, par ce biais, donne ses lettres de noblesse au hardcore qui s’impose dès lors vraiment comme un style de vie à part entière… Malheureusement, le tout se faisant sans structure ni moyen financier, la violence ainsi que la pression policière augmentant, le hardcore périclite et finit par, plus ou moins, disparaître vers 1986… Sa « brève » histoire influença néanmoins énormément de groupes, et pas des moindre (Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Moby…) ! En conclusion, on peut dire que ce documentaire n’est pas uniquement réservé à un public d’initiés, c’est plutôt un objet à mettre entre les mains de toutes personnes qui s’intéressent un temps soit peu à la musique contemporaine : c’est complet, instructif, ludique et très intéressant pour tout fan de zic! Ca permet aussi de remettre un peu l’église au milieu du village en redonnant un vrai sens au terme “hardcore”, utilisé de nos jours à outrance par nombre de formations n’ayant quasi aucun rapport avec l’idée originel de ce mouvement… ! un classique !

A los 18 años, ¿quién se imagina que se va a convertir en uno de los iconos más importantes de un movimiento musical emergente (por aquel entonces)?

Ian McKeye nace  el 16 de Abril de 1962 en Washington D.C., Estados Unidos y se crió en el barrio de Glover Park junto con Henry Garfield (Sí, como el gato. Pero menos risas porque sería el futuro cantante de Black Flag, bajo el nombre de Henry Rollings). Los padres de Mckeye dieron pie a que el inconformismo de su retoño creciese bajo un ambiente liberal y progresista. Durante su adolescencia, en su tocadiscos sonaban bandas de rock como Ted Nugent o Queen hasta que en 1979 descubrió en un concierto den The Cramps que el hard rock o el punk podían ser más duros todavía y alejarse así de “alejarse de la música verdaderamente corrupta”. The Cramps: culpables del primer empujón musical de Mackaye.

La primera producción musical de McKeye fue grabada con los The Slinkees en una cinta con una canción llamada “I drink milk”. Al poco participó como vocalista en Skewbald/Grand Union Su primer proyecto serio a la par que breve (1979-1980) se llamó The Teen Idles, en el que tocó el bajo junto con Nathan Strejcek, Geordie Grindle y Jeff Nelson, con quien formaría Minor Threat junto con Lyle Preslar y Brian Baker. Paradójicamente, Minor Threat fueron idolatrados y odiados a partes iguales puesto que se mostraban muy críticos, no sólo con el sistema, sino además con la escena punk local. El mensaje de Minor Threat fue uno de los primeros en alejarse del “There´s no future” de las bandas de punk o las primeras bandas de hardcore y se acercaron a un hardcore positivo además de crítico. A Ian Mckeye se le conoce como uno de los precursores del movimiento Straight Edge, que criticaba a los jóvenes inmersos en una espiral de alcohol, tabaco, drogas y sexo promiscuo. Esto se vislumbra en letras de canciones como “Straight Edge”, “Out of step” o “Bottled Violence”

Straight Edge: [I'm a person just like you/But I've got better things to do/Than sit around and fuck my head/Hang out with the living dead/Snort white shit up my nose/.../I've got the straight edge]

No obstante, algunas de sus letras generaron malentendidos además de controversia, como por ejemplo “Guilty of being white“, que describe la opresión sufrida por un blanco en una sociedad eminentemente negra.  Se llegó a acusar a la banda de racismo pasando por alto que la escena de DC se manifestó siempre abiertamente antirracista, antimachista y antisistema.

Ian Mackaye en Fugazi

Tras la ruptura de Minor Threat Mackaye participó en bandas de post hardcore como Embrace (1985-1986 junto con tres miembros de la banda de su hermano Alec, The Faith), Egg Hunt (1986) o Pailhead (1987-1988). En 1987 fundó Fugazi, que sería considerado uno de las bandas más importantes de post hardcore. La tendencia innovadora y transgresora del grupo no sólo abarcaba lo musical: sus conciertos no sobrepasaban los cinco dólares ni sus discos los diez, no se promocionaban, en todas las reseñas del grupo o crónicas de conciertos aparecen los sustantivos humanidad, energía y emoción… en definitiva una apuesta total por el DIY (Do It Yourself).

En la actualidad, Mackaye se encuentra embarcado en un dúo llamado The Evens con Amy Farina (The Warmers donde tocaba la guitarra el hermano de Mackaye, Alec). Por suerte para los adolescentes americanos que son incapaces de asistira conciertos en salas por no sobrepasar los 21 años, The Evens tocan en cafeterías, librerías, salas de arte, escuelas… Mackaye defiende su política musical con declaraciones como estas: “Amy y yo decidimos que la típica experiencia de los clubes era, de algún modo, anti-ética con respecto a la música. En este tipo de locales, el énfasis siempre estará puesto en el verdadero negocio, que por supuesto es el alcohol. Tal situación ha perjudicado en el hecho de que los menores de edad no pueden asistir a conciertos, lo que obviamente obedece a una ley que se conecta con la industria del alcohol”. (…)En los Estados Unidos hay muchos, pero muchos locales que no permiten la entrada a menores de 21 años. Es una locura… Déjame preguntarte si escuchabas música cuando eras adolescente y si era importante para ti. El hecho de que hagamos ese tipo de shows es por que nos gusta pensar en que al sacar la música de esos lugares, para llevarla a otros más inusuales, el foco central vuelve a la música y a la interacción humana.”

Lo que en un principio fue un proyecto con miras a un futuro inmediato (producción del 7″ de The Teen Idles) se convirtió en un sello discográfico independiente llamado Dischord Records, que fundó Mackaye con su amigo Jeff Nelson. Hasta la fecha el sello ha producido más de 150 títulos (además de The Teen Idles, Minor Threat, The Evens…) de bandas como Dag Nasty, Youth Brigade o Void hasta nuestros días. De momento.

“Straight Edge “ se refera la un stil de viata al tinerilor din subcultura hardcore punk.Acesti tineri au facut o alegere pe viata pentru a se abtine de la consumul de alcool , tutun , droguri (chiar si recreationale) sau sexul ocazional.Termenul a fost introdus in anii 80` de catre trupa Minor Threat prin melodia Straight Edge.

Simbolul X

       Litera “ X “ este cel mai cunoscut simbol Straight Edge , fiind cel mai des purtat pe spatele palmelor , desii poate fi vazut/purtat si in alte parti ale corpului.Unii adepti ai miscarii au intordus acest simbol pe ecusoane , patch-uri si alte articole de imbracaminte.

       Din spusele jurnalistului Michael Azerrad ,” X-ul “ a fost intodus in perioada turneului trupei Teen Idles din anii 80` . Trupa a fost programata pentru a sustine un concert in San Francisco , dar cand au ajuns , conducerea clubului a constatat ca membrii trupei nu aveau inca varsta minima admisa pentru a consuma alcool . Datorita acestui aspect , membriilor trebuia sa le fie interzisa intrarea in club. Ca un compromis , managerii clubului a marcat fiecare membru cu un X gros si negru astfel incat angajatii clubului sa nu le serveasca bauturi alcoolice.

      La intoarcerea in orasul natal , trupa a sugerat adoptarea acestui sistem in cluburile locale astfel incat sa le fie permisa intrarea tuturor tinerilor fara a le fi servit alcool.Semnul a fost astfel asociat cu micarea straight-edge.In ultimii ani tot mai multe cluburi si localuri adopta acest sistem.

      O variatie a simbolului X ca un trio ( xXx ) are originea in lucrarile artistice create de Jeff Nelson , tobarul trupei Minor Threat.In lucrarile sale , Jeff , a inlocuit cele trei stele de pe steagul DC-ului cu X-uri. Termenul Straight Edge este uneori abreviat prin includerea simboului X rezultand sXe .  

      Prin analogie , muzica hardcore punk este uneori abreviata hXc . Simbolul x poate fii folosit pentru a semnala ca o trupa sau o persoana este straigh-edge , prin adaugarea X-ului la inceputul si sfarsitul numelui. De exemplu xsttmsx. Istorie William Tsitsos a scris ca Straight-Edge-ul a trecut prin 3 etape diferite de la aparitia din anii 80` .

Asocierea miscarii cu muzica punk in anii apusi este numita era “ scolii vechi “ .

Scoala Veche ( 1970 si inceputul anilor 80` )

       Sentimente legate de miscarea straight-edge pot fi gasite in piesa cu titlul “ Straight-Edge “ aparuta in anii 80` a trupei Minor Threat.Un alt exemplu este piesa “Keep it Clean “ a trupei The Vibrators. Vocalul trupei “The Modern Lovers “ , Jonathan Richman , admitea deasemenea asocierea cu aceasta miscare prin melodia “ I`m Straight ” , in care era blamat consumul de droguri .Totusi, straight-edge-ul este mai apropiat de muzica punk rock , in particular subgenul mai rapid , hardcore punk , care isi are originile in anii 70` inceputurile anilor 80 , fiind caracterizat mai degraba prin strigarea versurilor decat cantarea lor. Cei care adoptau straight-edge-ul in acea perioada erau des asociatii cu idealurile punk originale precum individualism , dispretul fata de lucru sau scoala si atitudinea “ traieste pentru moment” .

     Desii straight-edge a aparut pe coasta de est a Statelor Unite in Washington D.C si New York , s-a extins rapid in Statele Unite si Candada.In anii 80` , trupe de pe coasta de vest , precum A.H.C , Stalag 13 , Justice League si Uniform Choice au inceput a fie cunoscute.In primele stadii ale istoriei acestei subculturi , au aparut ingrijorari care constau in alaturarea trupele non-sraight-edge cu cele straight edge.Aceste circumstante s-au schimbat si era scolii vechi era vazuta ca timpul dinainte despartirii celor doua scene.

     Scoala veche includea: trupele Minor Threat, State of Alert (S.O.A.), Government Issue si Teen Idles, 7 Seconds, Boston’s SSD, DYS si Negative FX, Cause for Alarm and The Abused. Youth Crew ( Perioada Tineriilor) (Mijlocul anilor 80` ) In timpul acestei perioade , care a aparut in mijlocul anilor 80 , influenta muzicii asupra straight-edge-ului parea ca atinge cote maxime.Noile branse sXe ,aparute in aceasta perioada , pareau influentate de trupele Gorilla Biscuits, 7 Seconds, Judge, Bold, Youth of Today, Chain of Strength, si Slapshot.

      La jumatatea anilor 80` , trupa Youth of Today a inceput sa fie asociata cu miscarea sXe , iar melodia lor “Youth Crew “ exprima dorinta unirii scenei intr-o singura miscare . Cea mai indentificabila tema aparuta in perioada tineriilor a fost asocierea sXe-ului cu vegetarianismul. In 1988 , YOT au lansat o melodia “ No More” care a initiat acesta noua tema in subcultura. Vocalul , Ray Cappo , isi arata convingeriile vegetariene prin versurile sale precum “”Meat-eating, flesh-eating, think about it. So callous this crime we commit” prin care condamna duritatea crimelor mancatorilor de carne asupra animalelor.Acest lucru a introdus drepturile animalelor si veganismul in miscarea sXe , atingand cote maxime in anii 90.

Anii 90

     La inceputul anilor 90 , militantii sXe au fost o prezenta bine simtita in scena, termenul militant insemnand o persoana dedicate si sincera , dar totusi erau considerati cu “mintea ingusta “ si potential violenti. Militantul Straight-Edge era caracterizat prin toleranta redusa fata de cei care nu erau straight-edge si foarte predispusi sa recurga la violenta pentru a promova o viata curata.

       Tot in aceasta perioada veganismul a devenit o parte majora din viata multor indivizi sXe , asa cum este reflectat in melodia Path Of Resistence a formatiei Earth Crisis,melodie care milita pentru sXe si drepturile animalelor La jumatatea anilor 90` multe din trupe care sustineau justitia sociala,eliberarea animalelor , veganismul si sXe aveau influente puternic de “ metal “ . Printre aceste trupe se numara Mouthpiece, Culture, Earth Crisis, Chorus of Disapproval, Undertow si Strife.

Anii 2000

      Dupa perioada anilor 90` , unele dintre aspectele controversate ale sXe-ului au inceput sa dispara,in mare parte ca un raspuns la actiunile media care caracterizau miscarea sub forma unei gasti.   Cum am descoperit si cum vad eu sXe-ul

      Acum 4-5 sau mai multi ani ascultam tot felul de muzicii,fara a fii fan dedicat al unui gen anume.Ma invarteam prin cercuri de “metalisti” ,punk-isti , “elektro-nisti” ,dar nu ma indentificam in totalitate cu nici unul din ele.In vara anului 2004 am fost invitat de o noua cunostiinta sa fiu vocalul unei trupe de black.Am acceptat invitatia si am ajuns sa cant alaturii de niste copii cu idei si planuri diferite si genuri muzicale mai diferite decat planurile lor.Colega de la tobe mergea pe un film “metal “ chitaristul pe “trash” , basistul pe “nu-metal” , iar eu…iar eu nu imi gaseam locul.Am ales sa merg pe stilul meu si sa vad ce se intampla.Pentru a va face o idee va recomand urmatorul exercitiu : imaginati-va trupa Clawfinger cu Deceneu la voce.Cam asta eram eu si cautam sa imbunatatesc acest lucru si sa devin XsttmsX din band si nu XsttmsX-ala care baga ceva gen Corey Taylor.

      Ascultand tot mai multe muzici pentru o cultura muzicala cat mai vasta am descoperit cateva trupe de straight-edge printre care Earth Crisis si Minor Threat. Am fost foarte atras de ambele pentru ca desii erau diferite imi dadeau aceasi stare. Am inceput sa citesc despre ele si sa descopar tot felul de simboluri , mentalitaii , mesaje si starii ce imi pareau stranii pentru acest gen de muzica,dar erau perfect normale pentru mine ca individ. Descoperisem sXe si eram fascinat de mesajele indreptate inspre mine,inspre XsttmsX si nu mesaje generale despre nimic.Dupa primul concert al bandului si cativa ani in care consumam alcool si restul daunatoarelor am decis ca este cazul sa ma opresc pentru ca sunt mai bun si refuz sa fiu sclavul lor.Am avut aceasta initiativa inainte de a descoperii sXe , tocmai de accea si fasciantia mea fata de miscare era mai mare , pentru ca am vazut ca se poate sa fii punkist/hardcore-ist fara sa te incadrezi in stereotipurile vremii legate de scena.Si mai mare era uimirea cand aflam ca in lume exista tot mai multii ca mine si mai mare era uimirea cand aflasem ca exista un stil de viata undeva in lume pe care eu incercam sa il adopt din propria initiativa fara a stii nimic despre el.

     Poate acesta este motivul pentru care am refuzat sa vad sXe-ul ca un set de reguli pentru punkisti care nu consuma alcool sau droguri .

Cum vad eu sXe

     Pentru mine sXe insemna sa fiu mai bun,mai bun fata de mine , nu fata de ochii lumii.Inseamna sa nu consum alcool pentru a avea tot timpul mintea limpede si capabila de a procesa informatii.Insemna sa nu imi creez o lume a mea ,pentru ca deja ma mint altii ca traiesc intr-o lume buna.Legat de sex….aici ii mai delicat.Inseamna sa nu beau si sa mananc mizerii bagate in sticle si pungi frumos colorate.Insemana sa nu vreau nimic mai mult decat cea ce am nevoie.Insemana sa imi pretuiesc clipele petrecute pe pamant si sa profit de ele pentru a le oferii urmasilor mei o lume mai dreapta.Inseamna sa nu ma multumesc cu un job de rahat care imi ofera stabilitate financiara si posibilitate imbogatirii a catorva oamenii datorita eforturilor mele.Insemna muzica si scena hardcore , inseamna solidaritate si prietenii bazate pe convingerile comune si dorinta de schimbare , insemna schimb de idei si cultura insemna multe ce nu pot fi rezumate prin regulile “ sa nu bei , sa nu fumezi , sa nu faci sex ocazional” . Daca ar insemna doar asta ,nu ar fi o miscare , am fii niste oamenii care nu beau , nu fumeaza, nu fac sex ocazional.Sa fii straight-edge , in viziunea mea , insemna sa alegi schimbarea in bine , sa te pregatesti, sa iti dai singur seama ca muzica este frumoasa chiar daca esti “treaz” , ca filmele sunt mai bine regizate in cinematografe si ca sexul cu persoana aleasa poate fii minunat si distractiv atata timp cat esti dispus sa inveti si sa vrei mai mult de la tine.Inseamna sa constientizezi ca ei ne vor inapti , incapabili sa tinem capul sus si sa luptam pentru drepturile noastre.Insemna sa crezi in tine si in puterile tale si sa nu te lasi prada unor miraje si stereotipuri impuse de altii.Insemna sa nu te incadrezi in standardele lor impuse de normalitate si sa fii tolerant cu cei diferiti de tine. Insemna…..

      Acum , dupa trecerea anilor si maturizarii mele mentale si muzicale am ramas la fel de neindentificat cu scena.Sunt la fel de individualist ,dar am invatat multe din scena si am legat multe prietenii care mi-au adus alte invataturi.Schimbari majore datorate scenei nu au avut loc.Singurele schimbari infulentate , dar nu impuse , sunt urmatoarele : am devenit vegetarian , am decis sa nu mai dorm si sa astept schimbarea,am decis sa nu mai consum produse doar de dragul de a le consuma,am decis sa schimb tot ce nu mi-e benefic si am sa o fac.

Totusi nu sunt si nici nu am puterea sau convingerea ca am sa fiu vreodata sXe

         Inca sunt un slav al tutunului,inca imbogatesc pe altii oferindu-mi posibilitatea primirii unui bonus sub forma cancerului , inca nu pot scapa de drogul asta si inca beau multe cafele.Cand voi avea puterea de a renunta la aceste rele am sa port cu mandrie un mare X in suflet . Daca sunteti mai puternici , mai intelepti si mai dornici de promovare a unui stil de viata alternativ va invit sa fiti mai buni , sa fiti sXe.

PS : Daca cineva nu este sa nu are de gand sa devina sXe nu insemna ca este slab , prost etc.

Piti mennä kouluun tänä aamuna autolla kun pikku-Pandan pyörästä on kumi puhjennut… Kun kurvasi autolla koulun parkkipaikalle tunsin itseni jopa varakkaamaksi kuin oikeasti olen vaikka alla olisi millainen kosla (Citroën Xantia vm. 97) tahansa. Mutta itse autolla ei ole meikäläisen mielentilalle merkitystä vaan sillä mitä stereoista sattuu tulemaan. Tänään sieltä sattui tulemaan Minor Threatia.

Voi sitä tunnetta kun pääsee keskustan kiihdytä-jarruta-kiihdytä-mummonyli-ja EXTRAPISTEITÄ-jarruta- kiihdytä-SPLÄT-karnevaalista isommalle tielle ja nostamaan nopeuden peräti 70 kilometriin tunnissa! Ja vaikka valvontakameroita on joka puolella niin silti joku vetäisee ohi. Ei se mitään, ämyreistä tulee edelleen Minor Threatia niin ei haittaa. Huomaan kyllä nopeuden menevän hieman ylinopeudeksi ja liikkeiden olevan rivakampia. Poistun isommalta tieltä pienemmälle, Minor Threatin yhä pauhatessa.

Vihdoin koululle päästessäni on kulunut noin 20 minuuttia siitä kun olen kulkenut Porin Isosannasta keskustan läpi Tiilimäelle ja sieltä edelleen Vähäraumalle. Siinä välissä on aika monta biisiä Minor Threatia ehtinyt soida, kotiin mennessä on sitten sama rumba.

Nyt kun olen selvinnyt hengissä takaisin kotiin, niin taidan jalkautua loppupäiväksi ja hakea fillarin huollosta. Vaikka nyt olikin käytettävä moista luksusta niin ei saa ryhtyä laiskaksi…

Vai että olenko pelannut joskus Carmageddonia? Mistä niin voi päätellä? Enhän minä soittanut Fear Factorya vaan MINOR THREATIA, SAATANA!

I wore this tape out in high school and had to buy a second copy. Years later I purchased the CD with the full discography, and the songs are still just as great. I have the album in regular rotation, especially when I’m getting ready to go skate.

Henry Rollins est partout, tout le temps et ce depuis déjà longtemps ! !

Il a 18 ans lorsqu’il entend les Sex Pistols pour la première fois, ce fût, comme pour beaucoup d’autres jeunes de cette génération, une révélation… Il gravite alors dans la scène Punk-Hardcore de Washington, en tant que roadie mais aussi en tant que chanteur invité lors des concerts de ses amis et il est finalement invité à remplacer le chanteur de The Extorts qui deviendra à son arrivée State Of Alert. Après à peine 9 concerts et un EP, le groupe se sépare, mais Rollins aime la scène, que ce soit pour chanter sa rage ou pour se battre avec les membres du public…

Il devient proche des membres de Black Flag, les voit en concert le plus souvent possible et lorsque leur chanteur Dez Cadena décide de se consacrer uniquement à la guitare, ils invitent Rollins à se joindre à eux, c’est là que sa carrière démarre vraiment ! Il déménage à L.A. et se transforme en véritable bête de scène, se muscle, se fait tatouer le logo du groupe (entre autres..) sur le bras. Damaged sort en 1981, sa pochette est devenue culte car elle illustre le malaise que vivait une partie de la jeunesse américaine au début des 80’s. Au niveau musical on les sent déjà plus ouverts que les groupes avec lesquels ils partagent les scènes à l’époque, il en va de même pour  My War paru en 1983, le son s’alourdit quelque peu et on note que les trois derniers morceaux sont particulièrement lents, ce qui aurait influencé pas mal de groupes Grunge et Sludge. Le groupe se sépare après 6 ans d’existence.

En guise de transition, sortent Hot Animal Machine puis Drive By Shooting sur lesquels jouent déjà la plupart des futurs  membres du Rollins Band . Notons que la pochette d’ Hot Animal Machine est dessinée Mark Mothersbaugh qui n’est autre que le frontman de Devo ! Cet album comme le suivant contient pas mal de reprises dont “Ghost Rider” de Suicide, “Crazy Lover” de  Richard Berry et le “Move Right In” du Velvet Underground. Drive By Shooting quand à lui reprend un morceau de Wire et parodie le “We Will Rock You” de Queen avec le morceau “I Have Come To Kill You”!

Le Rollins Band nait la même année, sort son excellent premier album «Life Time», avec ses morceaux ultra secs et ses paroles désabusées…là aussi on s’écarte du format punk rock avec le morceau “Gun in Mouth Blues“  qui est une sorte de Blues dépressif de près de 9 minutes, ils incorporent également des éléments de Jazz, de Funk.  Entre 1987 et 1994, ils sortent 2 albums mémorables mais peinent à percer vers le grand public, c’est en 1994 que sort “Weight“, avec des compositions toujours aussi massives mais avec une touche bien funky grâce à la présence du bassiste Melvin Gibbs, bassiste funk ultra actif, entre autres avec Defunkt, Arto Lindsay et  Caetano Veloso. Et là, c’est la reconnaissance pour le groupe et ses singles “Liar” et “Disconnect” profitent d’une haute rotation sur MTV…

A partir de là, on a l’impression que Rollins ne dort plus, entre Rollins Band et ses albums, ses tournées et albums Spoken Word, les bouquins, sa maison de production, ses émissions de radio et de télévision ainsi que des petits rôles au cinéma font de lui une icône ultra-présente de la culture alternative !

Vers 1997, Rollins Band est en perte de vitesse et de popularité, le groupe se sépare et Rollins se consacre à ses projets personnels, dont des albums Spoken Word absolument géniaux, tels que Think Tank et Talk Is Cheap Vol.1 dans lesquels il partage ses mémoires, ses opinions sur la culture populaire américaine et bien sûr ses frustrations liées à son âge ou encore son statut de célibataire stakhanoviste. Il y en a des tonnes, Big Ugly Mouth, A Rollins in the Wry, Nights Behind the Tree Line, etc etc ..

Aujourd’hui il a 48 ans et n’est pas près de ralentir la cadence qu’il tient depuis toutes ces années… Sa principale activité est son émission de radio dont les playlists sont impressionnantes par leur éclectisme, il enchaine des artistes aussi variés que The Monks,  This Heat, Pascal Comelade,  Einstürzende Neubauten,  Miles Davis, Keiji Haino ou encore  Pan Sonic …

Donc, si vous voulez découvrir la longue et ‘exemplaire’ carrière de Rollins, voici par où je vous propose de commencer:

Damaged et My War de Black Flag, Life Time (selon moi leur meilleur album…) et Weight de Rollins Band. Au niveau spoken word, Think Tank et Talk Is Cheap Vol.1 sont de bonnes portes d’entrées, des dvd’s existent également mais n’étant pas sous-titrés il faut un peu s’accrocher vu le débit du bonhomme!

Et pour se mettre dans l’ambiance de la scène Punk – Hardcore de Washington vers la fin des 70’s, une excellente triple compilation: 20 Years Of Dischord avec entre autres: The Teen Idles, Youth Brigade, State Of alert et évidement Minor Threat qui sont  les fondateurs du label Dischord, dont les productions de l’époque sont de véritables pierres blanches!

Mais n’oublions pas ceux qui sont considérés par beaucoup comme les véritables  précurseurs de cette scène, les Bad Brains et leurs performances live à couper le souffle…Deux excellents albums et un DVD  Rock for Light,  I Against I et Live At CBGB 1982.

Brian Baker — guitarist with with Bad Religion and one of the founding members of legendary DC hardcore punk band, Minor Threat — was interviewed by Mickey Lynch on the Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder during the Warped Tour stop in Camden, N.J.

In the interview, Brian talks about his time with and role in Bad Religion as well as taking us through some of the highlights of his career. In addition to  Bad Religion and Minor Threat, Baker was founder of Dag Nasty. He was part of the original line-up of Samhain and has done stints in bands such as Doggy Style, The Meatmen, Government Issue and Junkyard.

Depois da sexta do peixe (prometeram que os preços diminuiriam até 25%, será que é verdade?), vem aí a segunda sem carne. Como uma grande fã de pratos vegetarianos, pretendo aderir. O site, feito pela Sociedade Vegatariana Brasileira é bem explicativo, e tem desenhos de bichos fofinhos que fazem você realmente se sentir mal por comê-los.
