Katrin Hillgruber, FR 16.11.

Question of Sport is filmed a few weeks before transmission but sometimes the wily production team like to give the false impression that the show is going out live. Thus on last night’s show Sue Barker conspiratorially wished David Haye good luck for tomorrow’s fight. And a millisecond’s panic was seen on Haye’s face that he was actually facing up the giant Valuev the next day (everybody seems to be referring to Valuev like that, as if he’s a character from a Slavonic folk-tale). Mental sparring with a leathery tennis commentator is hardly the best last-minute preparation for a fistfight with a massive Cretaceous throwback.

The rise of heavyweights from Eastern Europe has meant that less fights are taking place in the States and more in places such as Nuremburg and Minsk Square Garden. A positive effect of which is that if you’re in the Greenwich Mean Time gang you don’t have to staple your eyelids to your forehead to tune into the action.

As usual for bouts of this magnitude Sky are broadcasting it on a pay-per-view basis. I wouldn’t baulk at stumping up the £15 cost so much if I knew how much action I was going to enjoy. Because if Valuev brings down his anvil-fist onto the top of Haye’s bonce and knocks him out in the first round then I will certainly feel short-changed.

I suggest a pro rata system, with possibly a cab-style meter running in a top corner which ticks over for the duration of the fight. That would be Valuev for money.

45 minutes in and we’re leading this one 1-0! Blanco scored a penalty (certainly the correct call) to put us up and we now are in a great position and the win is definately possible.

Conditions are terrible in Minsk. It is extremely cold (near zero degrees celcius) and the pitch is extremely wet. Our players are sliding all over the place, which doesnt help players like Scocco.

We’re playing a very good game, compared to what we saw over the weekend. Our players are fighting hard, winning every ball, and are clearly in this for the win and nothing less. We’re working well together as a whole with pretty much everyone playing a role.

Our starting lineup was Saja, Jahic, Arce, Majstorovic, Juanfran, Kafes, Nsaliwa, Scocco, Nemeth, Blanco, and Manduca. Everyone is playing quite well, including Juanfran, but I really must point out Nsaliwa in particular. He hasn’t played in a while but he is playing extremely well at the moment. His tackles are incredible, ball control, through balls, he’s playing great generally. Nemeth is also playing well and had some great chances.

We are dominating possession and had many good chances. We have been caught on the counter attacks a couple of times and have given up some dangerous free kicks at times, but we’re holding on.

Now, time for the second half!

By the time you read this I will probably be underwater. Hopefully eating a croissant.

The tax that will take us to the train that will take us away under the sea and off to Lille is due in five and a half hours. If I didn’t have to book some last-minute travel insurance (lost E111- silly papa) I would not even be online.

I am, frankly, terrified. Having been travelling abroad alone for nearly 20 years, sometimes with a pathetic lack of planning, suddenly I am scared that I will not cope, that it will all go wrong somehow.

I am being stupid, I know – and it’s Lille, not Minsk. (Please, never go to Minsk ifyou can help it, even if you don’t have a child with you.) And I do speak the language (not that that improved Minsk.) What’s the worst that can happen?

I’ll let you know next time.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE Since 2002 Minsk have built 10-minute-plus psychedelic doom epics out of tribal

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE

Since 2002 Minsk have built 10-minute-plus psychedelic doom epics out of tribal rhythms and sprawling melodies. Their bassist, Sanford Parker (late of Buried at Sea), has not only recorded each of the group’s major releases but also made a name for himself producing the likes of Nachtmys-tium. Pelican, and Brutal Truth. Still, despite Parker’s presence behind the mixing boards, frontman Christopher Bennett says Minsk’s third full-length, With Echoes in the Movement of Stone (Relapse), was a collaboration. “I think that’s why we work well,” he says. “The rest of us work on the really basic structures of the songs, and Sanford makes them into what they are in the end.”

D OPPORTUNITIES

Although the Peoria, llli-hois-Based Dan3 jiist returned from its first-ever European tour, during which it played such faraway towns as Olomouc, Czech Republic, and Oberentfelden, Switzerland, Minsk didn’t make it to its namesake city in Belarus. “We inquired with the guy who booked our tour about playing in Minsk, but he just thought the political situation was not conducive to us playing there now,” Bennett laments. “He said there was a good chance we might ‘lose’ some equipment or something because it would be obvious we were foreigners.”

Proud of their reputation as fearless road dogs —after playing only five hometown shows, Minsk went on tour in 2003 and haven’t looked back—the bandmates cite only one gig that made them sweat bullets: opening for their idols Neurosis in November 2007. “[Neurosis vocalist-guitarist] Scott Kelly came to our show in Ashland, Oregon, and gave us some good feedback, but we were still surprised to be asked to play with them,” Bennett remembers. “And of course we said yes. It’s not like [we'd tell them], ‘No, I don’t know. I think there’s another show I wanted to go to that night.’”

In 2007, a gathering of like minds took place in Minsk, Belarus. The occasion was Unsound Minsk and featured Pole along side local artists, and it must have been good as it gave birth to collaborations between artists from Western Europe and Belarus. Alongside the aforementioned Pole, there is Pinch, Buben, Jacek Sienkiewicz & Arciom Kaveluski, Minorscene, The National Fanfare of Kadebostany. That’s right, I never heard of them either until now, and that’s the point. I hadn’t heard of Flying Lotus or Parliament/Funkadelic until I did, get me? You may have an idea what Pinch and Pole sound like, what about Kassian Troyer? His contribution would not be out of place on Chris Watson enviromental recording. Top dog!

The following tracks are available as a free download (proper quality too, not that 96kbps bullshit) and cd’s will also be given away at four events that are taking place about now in Krakow and Minsk.

See here for more information.

For this week’s radio program I’m dropping the album in it’s entirety, all backing it up with the following: contributions from Scalper, ‘Zero’ (from his forthcoming debut album which I mentioned last week); ‘Simple’ from the remastered Funcrusher Plus album by Company Flow, and a blast of South Africa’s hip hop crew Basemental Platform, their sound was very left-field like Co-Flow, disjointed beats somehow fitting together in a mind-bending kinda way. I lost the album that I had, but luckily I have two tracks burned on a cd. So that’s the radio program sorted for this week.

Ronald Steven Federici has often been described as “a leading expert in the neuropsychological evaluation and treatment of children having multi-sensory neurodevelopmental impairments.”

He is best described as a “developmental neuropsychologist,” specializing in the treatment of “institutional autism” (which he also calls “post-traumatic autism,” or “post-institutional autistic syndrome”).

Dr. Federici is licensed by the Virginia Board, and is the holder of a Psy. D. degree.

Dr. Ronald Federici is the author of “Help for the Hopeless Child: A Guide for Families, With Special Discussion for Assessing and Treating the Post-Institutionalized Child” and is the founder of Neuropsychological and Family Practice Associates, in McLean, Virginia.

There’s really not much to source from the net – be it images or bits of news – but I was still able to gather the following:

Miss Intercontinental 2009 Candidates in Belarus

From the Minsk City Executive Committee, here’s the press release:

MISS INTERCONTINENTAL 2009

THE MISS INTERCONTINENTAL 2009 beauty pageant will take place in Minsk. The most beautiful girls from all over the world will come to Minsk on 10-13 September. Shortly after the arrival of the beauties a tour around Belarus will be organized for the participants of the contest. The final of the MISS INTERCONTINENTAL 2009 will take place in Minsk on September, 27, 2009.

The MISS INTERCONTINENTAL contest, which started off in 1971, is in the top five of the most prestigious beauty competitions in the world.
On the other hand, the BelTA National Source of News reports:

Miss Intercontinental 2009 final to be host by Koldun brothers

Dmitry Koldun and Georgy Koldun will host the Miss Intercontinental 2009 final on 27 September, BelTA learnt from Alina Provotorova, spokeswoman for ONT TV Channel.

Initially, ONT TV Channel asked Alexander Rybak, winner of Eurovision 2009, to host the international beauty contest. However, the singer declined the offer.

The two brothers will share the stage with the Belarusian beauty Ekaterina Domankova, winner of the Supermodel of the World 2006 contest.

The script of the show is underway. It will be sent to the World Beauty Organization soon.

Apart from the beautiful girls from 60 countries, the show will be attended by the Eurovision 2008 and 2009 winners Dima Bilan and Alexander Rybak, Arash and Aysel, F.R.David from France and Morandi from Romania.

The name of the Belarusian representative at the contest is still unknown. “It is a very prestigious contest, which will be aired to all the countries of the world. It is important that a Belarus’ representative not only take part in the contest, but also impress the jury. That is why we should find a girl who will attract attention. That is why the jury is so meticulous,” Alina Provotorova noted.

Finally, the Official Site of Miss Intercontinental has this update:

Miss Intercontinental 2009 Candidates in one of their pre-pageant activities

The stage is ready to set and Rehearsals are beginning.

Cha Ye Lin (Miss Korea) celebrated her birthday during the Miss Intercontinental 2009 pre-pageant

Who will win the 38th edition of Miss Intercontinental? I cannot even hazard a guess at the moment, but let’s hope that Miss Philippines – Fil-German beauty Jacqueline Schubert – will figure out well in the finals this coming Sunday, September 27. The group shots of the candidates above were taken from a distance so it’s hard spotting our bet even after some major eye-squinting. Anyways, the finals will take place in front of a crowd of 4,000 at the National School of Beauty in Minsk, Belarus.

Cafe/Club* Tovarisch (Comrade) in Minsk, Belarus

Anyone nostalgic for the great Soviet State, or those that didn’t catch the wave the first time around will definitely enjoy this place’s concept. All is done to submerge you into that far away era, except the service, which is immaculate!

As you go down the stairs to enter you handshake with the doorknob & are greeted by a Huge hammer & sickle installation with a USSR map backdrop. The spacious dining room fully re-enacts the interior & setting of typical a Soviet restaurant starting from the music down to the knife & fork.

And an alcove hides a bright red dance floor with an orchestra pit and a display of a huge variety of items Made in USSR.

Upon further rummaging you will also find the endlessly creative bathrooms decorated with Soviet newspaper & lampshades in the forms of giant flies.

Once you have finished you meal, you can write an Anonimka** and comment on the food.

The food is sumptuous and really affordable ( as most places in Minsk) a 2 course meal for 2.5 cost us around 25 USD. Sorry we didn’t take photos of teh food which we gobbled on too fast!

Even the restaurant’s business cards enhance the restaurant’s brand through the Soviet emblem & the traditional typography.

And their giveaway calendars forewarn in the Communist style: Have you been to Cafe Tovarisch?

What are your favorite themed restaurants?

*Well it is actually a restaurant, but in Belarus there’s a huge tax & licensing difference between cafes & restaurants

** In the Soviet times people would anonymously snitch on each other to the authorities, this was called an “anonimka”
