It doesn’t matter how hard you try, what level of deception you can attain, or even how deluded you are.  There will always be things that give you away if you try and make out you are something you are not.

This haunting, damning song leaves the soul bare.  Written about New Orleans and hurricane Katrina it could be a slur on Bush and his political stance to the disaster although the line, ‘as a nation simply stares’ suggests a wider accusation.  The truth of the matter is, for all our huffing and puffing, most of us are apathetic and stand by as others suffer.  I yearn for a compassion that is not held back by pride, laziness and a lack of perseverance.  A compassion that actually takes action.  I can say I love but inaction gives me away.

There’s something about Trent Parke’s photography that reminds me of David Lynch’s movies, particularly Inland Empire. I think it’s his use of unusual lighting. It gives his photos that sense of normalcy gone terribly, terribly twisted that I see throughout Lynch’s work. Parke’s pictures are wonderfully thought-provoking. I love how he manages to evoke this sense of motion and dreaminess, just through his use of lighting, until the subject becomes almost abstracted.

I’m not going to quote this directly, as I can’t find the source, but I could swear that I saw an interview with Parke where he talked about his inspiration for photographing his work, Minutes to Midnight, coming from a quote about the Australian lack of innocence, and wanting to document the process through which it happened. In order to do this, he took a roadtrip around Australia with his wife (photographer Narelle Autio) for two years, and just took pictures of everything he saw. The results are stunning.

The pictures I’ve put up come from his series “Minutes to Midnight”, “Dream/Life” and “The Seventh Wave”. He started shooting in colour, but I found I preferred the moodiness of his black-and-white photos.

Linkin Park               Minutes To Midnight, 2007               12 tracks, 43:35 in length

Genre: Rock

I’d previously heard three of Linkin Park’s other albums. One I thought was just okay,  one I thought was pretty good, and one I enjoyed immensely. This album was a somewhat odd combination of the three: I really liked six tracks, thought two were pretty good, and thought four were just okay. I enjoyed the variety of sounds and music they used. I don’t know why I waited so long to hear this album, but I probably won’t wait as long to hear their next one.

Would I listen to this album again?

Yes. 

Would I spend money on this album?

Yes, if there was a good deal for it. 

Will I add any songs to my collection?

Yes, track 7 “Hands Held High” and track 8 “No More Sorrow”

Linkin Park is one of the few contemporary male lead-singer groups that I like. Why is this, you ask? I like pretty voices and Chester Bennington sounds so sweet when he’s not screaming.

I like their new Transformers’ 2 song, “New Divide.” It sounds an expensive Linkin Park song that echoes throughout the stratosphere.

But let’s remember the 90s: LP has gone from nu-metal meets hip-hop beats to Jay-Z mash-up to U2-inspired anthems and ballads – while telling tales of failed relationships, insecurity, obsessiveness, isolation, and regret. One would think that it would be depressing to hear Chester break his heart over and over again, but the songs have such pretty moments and end up being reassuring and cathartic. Millions of fans worldwide know what’s up.

Number 7: Leave Out All the Rest

Off “Minutes to Midnight.” Made mistakes but am repentant.

Highlight:
I’m strong on the surface
Not all the way through
I’ve never been perfect
But neither have you

Number 6: In the End

Anguish apex on “Hybrid Theory.” Tried really hard in a relationship and it all fell apart.

Highlight:
I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go

Number 5: Easier to Run

From “Meteora” – past mistakes continue to be painful.

Highlight:
Sometimes I remember the darkness of my past
Bringing back these memories I wish I didn’t have
Sometimes I think of letting go and never looking back
And never moving forward so there’d never be a past

Number 4: Numb

A killer closer to “Meteora.” Failure to live up to the expectations of a loved one (“I’m tired of being what you want me to be”).

Highlight:
Can’t you see that you’re smothering me
Holding too tightly afraid to lose control
Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart right in front of you

Number 3: Breaking the Habit

From “Meteora” – finally a song that is wholly sung – where a) Chester doesn’t scream and b) isn’t interrupted by Mike.

Highlight:
The whole song is a high-speed emotional rollercoaster – love the changes in tone.

Number 2: Valentine’s Day

From “Minutes to Midnight.” Probably the most easy-listening song LP has ever done. Lover went away. Holidays are hard because of the memories – part 1.

Highlight:
I used to be my own protection, but not now
Cause my path had lost direction, somehow

Number 1: My December

Holidays are hard because of the memories – part 2. About being alone during winter hoidays in a very sad way. This song is a b-side to “One Step Closer” and is hands-down LP’s best song. Written by Mike, there are two beautiful live versions from the 2000 and 2007 KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas concerts.

EVER FEEL LIKE THIS?  —>

“Another day’s been laid to waste, I’m my own worst enemy, I’ve given up, looking for help somehow somewhere, and no one cares, put me out of my misery”

This is a selection of cheerful lines from Track 2 on Linkin Park’s Minutes to Midnight.  I was feeling down this morning walking to work and the sentiments of the song echoed strongly with me.  I was feeling down because I knew I could be doing better if I tried but couldn’t be bothered to, I was have a pity party, and I didn’t feel like getting out of it.

Then, right in the middle of the pain in the song, the word “Godddddddddddd!” is screamed followed by “Put me out of my misery!”

The great and encouraging thing, is that God is ready to put us out of our misery any second we want.  Not in some form of morbid suicidal relief but through a powerful soul searching love that reaches out and removes all the pain.  If we can just see God for who he is, and see ourselves for who we really are then everything falls into perspective and we find ourselves at peace.  The problem is we are so caught up and obsessed with ourselves that in spite of our wounds we can’t be bothered to look up and really deal with ourselves.  God isn’t going to force himself on us but if we can learn to let him in then he can go about soothing our hurts.

since their formation in 1996 the band has sold over 50 million albums and won two grammy awards. linkin park is well known for its adaptation of the nu metal and rap rock genres into their own unique style that can be heard in their first two albums: hybrid theory and meteora. the six man band conists of the following members listed below with their individual roles:

• chester bennington – vocals
• rob bourdon – drums, percussion
• brad delson – lead guitar
• dave “phoenix” farrell – bass guitar, backing vocals
• joe hahn – turnables, programming, sampling
• mike shinoda – emcee, ocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards

hybrid theory

their first album, hybrid theory, was released in the year 2000. this album was well received by fans and is considered one of the best rap rock alternative bands ’til date. hybrid theory was also nominated for three grammy awards, including best new artist, best rock album, and best hard rock performance (for their song crawling). winning the best rock video and best direction awards for in the end launched them into mainstream media.

reanimation

in 2002 reanimation, the band’s second album was released. reanimation consisted entirely of remix versions of their songs from hybrid theory and hybrid theory ep. this album featured black thought, jonathan davis, aaron lewis and a number of others. reanimation claimed the second spot on the billboard 200.

meteora

their next album, meteora, followed their previous nu metal and rapcore styles with numerous effects and the use of a wide range of ‘random’ instruments. once released on march 25th 2003, the album earned respect from all parts of the world. meteora hit #1 in the united kingdom and the states, and #2 in australia. linkin park was then invited by metallica to play at the ’summer sanitarium tour 2003′, which included well-known acts such as limp bizkit, mudvayne and deftones. linkin park won mtv awards for the best rock video (somewhere i belong) and the viewer’s choice award (breaking the habit).

collision course

in 2004, linkin park began to work with jay-z to produce another remix album, entitled collision course. this album featured lyrics from both artists’ previous music. the band, along with jay-z, performed on live 8’s stage for global audiences. they were once again reunited at the grammy award ceremony 2006 to perform  numb/encore after winning a grammy for best rap/sung collaboration. they then went on to play at the ’summer sonic 2006′  music festival in japan, hosted by metallica.

minutes to midnight

linkin park returned to the recording studios for 14 months to work on their next album. their fourth album, minutes to midnight, was released on may 15th, 2008. once again linkin park’s music too the top spots on the billboard charts. the band also collaborated with busta rhymes (yeah, seriously) on his single we made it.

i think that all of linkin park’s music is quite awesome. all very different from each other, but very good. linkin park took a lot of crap on the release of minutes to midnight because fans said that their music had completely changed. in their defense, sure hybrid theory and meteora sound pretty heavy compared to minutes to midnight, but they too are different from each other. minutes to midnight has a metallic hip-hop feel. the songs focus on a variety of topics ranging from ex-girlfriends (oh, chester) to mike’s ’state-of-disbelief’ rap with a military feel to what a tool george w bush is (props).

Am 20. Februar 2008 spielten Linkin Park live im Apple Store in SoHo und befinden sich damit in prominenter Gesellschaft. Die Aufnahmen der Performance werden exklusiv im iTunes Store angeboten.

Bis auf My December sind die insgesamt leider nur sechs Lieder (Setlist nach dem Klick) allesamt aus dem Erfolgsalbum Minutes To Midnight.

Auf der einen Seite eine coole Sache, Linkin Park mal im kleinen Rahmen zu erleben, aber andererseits fehlt den Aufnahmen einfach diese unvergleichbare Live-Stimmung wie bei einem richtigen Konzert. Hier hören sich die Tracks vielmehr nach einer normalen Studio-Aufnahme an.

Wer Minutes To Midnight bereits schon hat, braucht sich diese EP nicht unbedingt anzuschaffen. Und wer Linkin Park mal in einer Live-Version hören will, dem kann ich vielmehr das Album Road to Revolution – Live at Milton Keynes ans Herz legen.

Fazit: Hatte mehr erwartet, eigentlich nur ein Abklatsch des Albums mit ein bisschen Live-Stimmung.
