Northeast defeated Miramar 77-42 in a semi-final basketball game at the Hawk Kreul Classic at the Coral Springs Gymnasium. Northeast will face The Rock, from Gainesville, Florida at an 8:00 p.m. game on Tuesday night at the Coral Springs Gymnasium. Northeast is ranked number two in basketball in the Florida 5A poll.

Northeast never trailed and led 31-12 in the first quarter and had 55 points in the first half. T.J. Sapp scored 25 points and Jelani Hewitt had 24 points for Northeast.

Life on the green mountain is sweet – and these days kinda like some strange movie. I guess it is partly due to the season – as Christmas gets closer, there are fiestas galore, special art markets for shoppers, and a proliferation of Santa wannabes. This is the third time I’ve been in Costa Rica for the pre-festive season – the last time was probably twelve years ago – and it seems to me that everything has spun out of control and is starting to resemble the excess of North America more and more.

But I won’t go on about consumerism and commercialism – I’ve spent enough time on this blog in the last few months talking about that stuff. No, no, I won’t be a Scrooge this year. I’m happy to be here and look forward to all the tamales and trimmings (especially the fine art form of tinsel creations I equate this country with) that go with a Costa Rican Christmas, even if some of the traditions have taken on a rather glossy hue. It is a time to spread love and enjoy friends and try not to be a glutton.

Like my new pal, Miel, the spoiled kitty I live with, it is sometimes better just to window shop than to indulge in everything that comes our way…we all need a bell around our neck in this season to remind us not to eat everything in sight.

The evening after I arrived last week, it was the 3^rd annual Festival de Luces – not quite a Santa Claus Parade, but something close. I walked from my home here in Cerro Plano, through the gathering marching bands and primping floats, to El Centro, that is downtown Santa Elena. There was already a huge crowd gathered, and by the time the parade passed through a couple of hours later, there were more people assembled on that 100 meters of Main Street than I had ever seen before.

In fact, I’m sure there aren’t this many people living in the town, that alone the surrounding area. Turns out that bands had come from as far away as Puntarenas, Bijagua, Miramar – there were buses full of excited kids in sparkly costumes with their marching band instruments – drums, horns, batons and a great proliferation of vertical glockenspiels! And the bands must have brought their mothers, fathers, uncles, grandmothers – well, I don’t know what the official count was, but there were a zillion people squished into the little downtown core of Santa Elena.

Since it was so crowded on the street, I went up onto the balcony of Bohemias, a lovely restaurant owned by a lovely woman, Arecelly. This gave me a squirrel’s-eye view of the craziness on the street as well as a chance to sip a glass of wine.

It wasn’t long before I was truly wondering if I had stepped into a Fellini film – in the “pre-parade show” the street crowds were entertained by fire stick twirlers, energetic gymnasts, a Mexican dance troupe (with big bright incredibly shiny costumes),

the local police making a pass through in marching formation (I really hope that some of them were from elsewhere, as I hate to think there are this many policia in this town). These performers were all joined by vendors selling blinking Santa hats with out-of-control dogs running everywhere. The full moon had just passed but was still a large presence in the sky, the clouds came and went, the mists spit down from time to time, rock band dry ice shot swirls of fog throughout the area (or was that the smoke from a kitchen on fire?)  

And I’m not sure when devil’s red horns became a part of the Christmas story, but there must have been a post-Halloween fire sale on, for they were everywhere! Half the town was looking kinda diabolical.

And then the parade began. It was heralded in by a local woman, Doña Virginia Zamora, who gets around town in a golf cart – she was all decorated for the occasion. In my photo, she looks more like a visiting UFO, but in all honesty, that night, I’m not sure we would have noticed an alien ship as being out of place.

There were several bands, as I said earlier, from all over. They were all at least good and some were excellent – I particularly liked the band from Bijagua. They all had cute outfits in gold, red, blue or silver (and blinking Santa hats or glowing devil horns.) The parade would move along about twenty feet and then stop, giving each band and float the chance to be admired by each segment of the crowd. This makes for an extremely slow parade. I felt sorry for the last band which was from Puntarenas, because we surely had heard every Christmas carol known to mankind by then, played by glockenspiel and trumpet, and reinforced by very enthusiastic drummers on their snare drums, bass drums and percussion kits, so I don’t think they got the same enthusiastic greeting that the first bands did.

There was also about ten floats – the most impressive being a backhoe turned into a lit-up dragon – the cutest being a fairy castle filled with princesses and princes – the most “Monteverdian” being a garden of earthly delights accompanied by walking orchids, ladybugs, jaguars, and a variety of flashy birds.

This was all followed by a fireworks display, but I had gone the opposite way and headed home, my festive cup already overflowing. I felt that somehow little Santa Elena and rural Monteverde had turned into a bustling city in the three months I had been in Canada.

The next day I had a meeting with the board of Bosqueterno S.A., to discuss the communications work and history-writing I’m doing for them. All seems good though I still have lots of work to do – creating a power point presentation, setting up a blog for them, finishing the story-telling. It will be much easier to do it here with all the resources around me.

Wolf and I have replenished the many local store shelves with our book for the Christmas shopping season. Walking with Wolf has been selling well, particularly in certain stores. I found out that Alan Masters, who runs one of the CIEE groups (visiting tropical biology university students from all over the US), bought copies for all of his thirty students. Apparently a few had read it and were talking it up – a couple of the students had even chosen to take this course in Monteverde after reading the book. This had happened before I returned, but Wolf had sat and signed all the books one day at the Reserve after he and Lucky gave a talk on the history of the community to the group. I haven’t bumped into Alan yet, but will be giving him a very big hug when I do see him.

I’ve spent many mornings this week with Wolf at the entrance to the Reserve, being bathed in sunshine, visiting my Reserve family, meeting tourists, eating the great sandwiches at the Santamaria’s Family Sodita next door (highly recommended), and discussing with Don Carlos the progress of the Spanish translation.   Progress report – slow, but sure.

One of the coolest new things at the Reserve was that they have installed motion-sensor cameras in the forest. The Environmental Education crew (my good friend Mercedes and Wolf’s granddaughter Hazel) have a camera set up near a tree only a few hundred meters from the reception area where animal scratches had been observed. Mercedes showed me the pictures they’ve taken in the last month – of a puma, jaguarundi, tayra, and peccaries. Incredible, this much wildlife so close to the busy center of the Reserve.

There was also the Christmas Art Fair at the Quaker school – where the phenomenally-talented community artists gather and display and hopefully sell their original creations. Of course there is also lots of food available and all the proceeds help the school. I am not a great shopper and didn’t need anything and don’t want to spend money, so only bought snacks. I could never have made up my mind between all the beautiful things available so just didn’t even bother to think about it. (The photo is Benito Guindon’s pine needle baskets)

Instead it was a day of socializing and oohing and aahing over the art as well as the new babies in town.

Last night was Open Mike at the newly remodeled Bromelias. One of the most beautiful spots in Monteverde, it is the lovechild of Patricia Maynard, who has created a stunning building, amphitheatre and gardens where you can go to hear great music while sitting by the bonfire under the starry sky. It is a little off the beaten track and its location makes it a difficult go for Patri, but anyone who knows the place is always charmed by its special vibe. She has started this open talent night and in this town there is no shortage. Hopefully this will grow into a well attended and magical evening for local and visiting musicians and the rest of us who enjoy the music.

The week took a turn for me when I was contacted by the Canadian Embassy. In October, I received an email from my pal Jose Pablo, the Economic Officer who had helped secure generous funding from the Embassy for the translation of our book last March. He said that he wanted to invite me to an event on Sunday December 13 that had to do with a “senior level” visit.

 I was happy to be invited and was excited and then I didn’t hear anything else.  A couple of days ago, I emailed him, asking if I was still invited to whatever the thing was. The next day I had an email from him, explaining that Canada’s Governor General, the interesting Michaelle Jean, would be on an official visit to Costa Rica. There had been a plan to have a conservation/green program for her and that is what I was to be part of.  Unfortunately this part of the visit was cancelled, and so, so sorry, maybe next time.  Boo Hoo.

Two email messages later, I opened up an official invite from the Canadian Ambassador to Costa Rica, Neil Reeder, to a formal reception next Monday night for the Governor General at the Official Residence of the Ambassador. No more boo hoo! Great excitement instead…until I realized that I now need a formal costume – dress, shoes, shawl, bag – well, you know, FORMAL! So I’ve spent the last two days wandering around Monteverde, borrowing all the necessities from friends here. I have the dress, the shawl, going to try on a couple of pairs of shoes today – thank goodness that women love to play dress-up! The lovely ladies here on the mountain are looking in their closets and helping me pull this off in a very short time with no money!

My friend Melody came by and cut and hennaed my hair (it got too red this time – as I bought the wrong color – but my dress is red, so it will be okay) and also cut my friend Corrie’s hair. Melody also lent me the red and silver dress that I’m building my costume around.

I will head down the mountain tomorrow to San José to meet my Texas friend, Caroline Crimm, who is finishing up her research down there; to go and enjoy a number of Costa Rican musical groups who are participating in a free outdoor concert in support of the International March for Peace and Non-Violence; to rendezvous with Roberto, who is coming from Cahuita and returning to the mountain with me; and now, to meet the Queen – well, not exactly the Queen, but as close as we get to her in Canada.

Once again, Fellini films fill my mind, and si, la dolce vita es dolcita!

Buenas Noches y felicidades a todos!!!

Luego de la gran experiencia vivida en Santa Rosa, llegó el turno de Miramar como anfitriona del grupo IGE 2010, que comprende los distritos 4770 de Brasil y 4920 de Argentina.
Ansiosos y expectantes, fuimos llegando a esta bellísima ciudad que nos esperaba con los brazos abiertos. Liliana Montovi (RC Miramar) y Verónica prepararon el lugar de la estadía, y junto a Maria Elvira Mercuri (RC Miramar) y Mabel Panelo (Presidente RC Miramar) organizaron la bienvenida. En esta oportunidad, los que arribaron más temprano, luego de largas horas de viaje, fueron Edith, Raúl, Paola y Marcelo, desde Santa Rosa. Luego, sobre el mediodía hicieron lo propio Matías y Juan Pablo, procedentes de Bolívar y Dolores respectivamente.
Ahora si, con el grupo completo, iniciamos la jornada reuniendo las partes que componen el lema de RI para este año que cada uno tenía en custodia, y nos alistamos para llevar a cabo lo planeado.
La primera actividad fue un magnífico CityTour, brindado por Verónica, detallando al máximo las virtudes de su ciudad, mostrando su capacidad y la pasión por su profesión (Lic. En Turismo). Conocimos gran parte de las playas miramarenses, donde los menos friolentos nos animamos a mojarnos los pies en el mar, también recorrimos el bosque, colmado de grandes pinos y eucaliptos, el vivero, nos hicimos un tiempo para conocer la Gruta de Lourdes y para llenarnos de energía en el mítico bosque energético. De regreso en la parte urbana, recorrimos los centros comerciales más importantes, sus plazas, monumentos importantes, y la feria de artesanos. Siempre con la compañía de Gonzalo, quien gentilmente se ofreció como conductor del tour.
Una vez finalizado el paseo, volvimos a nuestro hogar anfitrión, donde estaban esperándonos Laura y Gustavo, del canal de televisión local, para hacernos una entrevista sobre el motivo de nuestra visita a la ciudad, nuestro rol dentro del programa IGE, y un especial interés en saber como la estábamos pasando en nuestra visita.
Luego de la conferencia, recibimos atentamente una clase magistral de protocolo y ceremonial, brindada por Liliana, quien se desempeña en esa área en la Municipalidad, y nos ofreció sus conocimientos sobre las formalidades al momento de compartir una mesa, su disposición y organización y como desenvolvernos de manera correcta.
Mas tarde, y luego de renovar energías con un breve descanso, comenzamos a transitar el final del primer día.
Pero antes de ello, recibimos la visita de Néstor Hidalgo (RC Mar del Plata Norte), Presidente del Subcomité de IGE, quien nos siguió instruyendo sobre la significación de los IGEs, y nos transmitió su experiencia como Team Leader, recordando anécdotas y situaciones por las que debieron pasar, infundiendo en cada uno de nosotros el compañerismo y fomentando el fortalecimiento del grupo.
Ahora si, para el cierre de la primer mitad de la jornada, nos dirigimos a casa de Caco y María Inés, que nos esperaban con una cena maravillosa. Allí estaban también Liliana, Mabel, Luciana Ramajo (RC Miramar), Sebastián, y Néstor quien se quedó para seguir acompañándonos.
En párrafo aparte, queremos mencionar Huberto y Mirta, a quienes les agradecemos las maravillosas clases de tango y folklore que nos dieron, teniéndonos una gran paciencia debido a nuestros escasos conocimientos y limitadas condiciones para la danza.
El otro día de encuentro comenzó bien temprano, luego del desayuno, recibimos la visita de Belisario, un reconocido fotógrafo de la ciudad, que nos realiza una sesión de fotografía, para ser utilizadas en la confección de los trípticos.
Luego de ello, comenzamos a planificar el viaje. Edith nos cuenta lo que averiguó sobre la parte médica y el seguro de viajero, repartiendo las planillas para hacerla completar por nuestros médicos de cabecera. Matías, por otra parte, muestra los diseños que preparó para los trípticos, los pines y las tarjetas. Y así, todos aportando ideas, información y sugerencias, llevamos adelante la reunión. Definimos la vestimenta del grupo, la preparación de nuestras presentaciones personales y de grupo, y la preparación de algún evento especial para la semana del bicentenario del 25 de mayo. Como última actividad, Edith nos propone manifestar el resultado personal del encuentro, aflorando en el grupo el gran crecimiento como tal y el compañerismo que se ha dado en este corto tiempo de contacto.
Así fue, como concluimos el 2º encuentro, luego del almuerzo, el helado y la despedida, emprendimos el regreso a nuestros hogares, vislumbrando el próximo en la bella Bolívar.

Dalt de Miramar, tres n’han begut el flux per vitaminar cos i esperit i tres d’altres hem aprofitat per fer fotos. L’actitud dels primers ha afegit emotivitat a les fotos dels segons, que hem volgut quedar en segon pla per no contaminar el moment de puresa. La senyora japonesa que ha fet les seves fotos al meu costat ha estat contenta de compartir activitat i ha somrigut i ens hem dit hola i adéu i ens hem fet capades en despedir-nos. Els tres que han begut del flux solar s’hi han estat molta estona, més de la que m’hagués imaginat. En acabar jo també he provat de beure una miqueta però no he tingut esma d’estar-m’hi gaire i he tornat a baixar cap al Poble Sec. Maleïda inconstància.

A new skate park near the Miramar shopping centre promises to be a huge draw as it set out to rival similar parks in Sweden and Germany. Set on a plot of 5,828 square metres, the Skate Park, which will be officially inaugurated in a few weeks, will become one of the largest youth-orientated leisure facilities in the municipality of Fuengirola.

Ana Mula, Fuengirola´s councillor for Town Planning, said “it would offer a unique space for young people to skate board, BMX ride or roller-blade. They are growing activities and now we have provided the best new facilities.”

As well as the skaters’ and bikers’ ramps there will an additional 3000 square metre park with amenities including bowls. “We are extremely proud to have developed these purpose-built, outdoor facilities,” added the councillor.

Un estat ansiós aboca a transtorns del comportament diversos. Són transtorns del comportament lleugers, en diriem agradables, com estar pendent de la informació metereològica, detectar quan ha bufat vent i farà un dia net i pujar a Miramar aprofitant els pendents del Poble Sec. El d’avui, me l’imaginava més clar.

En mi trabajo nocturno de cibernauta y blogger, en una de esas noches que me quedo buscando webs y viendo videos por youtube para sacarme las ganas de surfear y subir contenido al blog, me encuentro leyendo una web surfera la cual tiene una revista que se distribuye por toda Latinoamérica, que se llama Surfos Magazine.

Viendo las distintas secciones de la web llego a una en la cual hay una bitácora de viaje escrito por tres hermanas de la Argentina. Realmente no las conocía y nunca las había oído nombrar.

Las tres hermanas muy bonitas pero por sobre todas las cosas, las fotos demostraban que surfeaban muy bien.

Gracias a las famosas redes sociales que están invadiendo el espacio publico de nuestra sociedad para hacer de nuestra vida privada un poquito más publica, me conecté a través de “facebook” con Coni Pose, quién con mucha amabilidad accedió a que le pueda realizar una entrevista por medio del correo electrónico.

Estudio Geografía y de profesión: surfer pro (risas).

A que edad empezaste a surfear? Por que empezaste?

Empecé a los 12 por que había ido a Punta del Este y quería hacer algo divertido (era chica para salir a la noche y habíamos ido por que mis hermanas más grandes querían) y como me encantaba la playa, el mar y estar mucho tiempo adentro del agua decidí con mis dos hermanas empezar a surfar.

Competís regularmente? Que torneos? Cuál fue el último que participaste?

Si, corro el circuito Nacional y otros campeonatos locales. También estos dos últimos veranos corrí la triple corona de Miramar. Participé en varios eventos internacionales como mundiales Juniors y Open.

Competiste en el último torneo Mundial de la ISA en Costa Rica? Cómo te fue? En los mundiales anteriores, ya sea Junior y/u Open, como te fue?

En el último evento de la ISA (Mundial Costa Rica) no participé, en esta oportunidad me tocó verlo como espectadora. Fue una experiencia diferente pero muy buena!

En el Mundial Junior de California, USA (2005) me fue bien considerando que era la primer experiencia Internacional y el equipo Argentino quedó muy bien posicionado (13). En el de Maresias, Brasil (2006), fui como suplente.

Al Mundial Junior de Portugal no pude ir ya que el equipo no viajó pero por suerte el año pasado fui con el equipo Open a Portugal. Fue muy bueno participar del Mundial en la categoría Open. Aprendí mucho de los más experimentados.

En que número del ranking te encontras actualmente?

Este año quedé posicionada en el puesto 5º del ranking Nacional. No quedé muy conforme con mis actuaciones ya que pretendía quedar al menos entre las 3 mejores ubicaciones ya que venía de ganar el título de Campeona Argentina y quería luchar para ganarlo otra vez. Aunque tuve varias lesiones en el verano y la suerte no estuvo de mi lado, igual fue lindo circuito y la pase súper bien!!!

Donde surfeas regularmente?

Surfeo mucho en Playa Grande (especialmente durante el invierno) y me gusta mucho ir para el sur (Honu Beach, Mariano, Horizonte, La Paloma, Chapadmalal, Seis brujas y Miramar)

Con quiénes surfeas?

Con mi hermana Rochi y con Mary y Maia (amigas casi hermanas!!)

Qué haces cuando no hay olas?

Cuando no hay olas, voy al gimnasio, igual trato de meterme al agua siempre. Una solución para los días chicos es meterme con un longboard. Me encanta!!! Se hace más divertido que con la tabla corta si esta muy enano (que este último año hubo muchos días así!!)

Cómo te entrenas? Tenés alguna rutina?…

Entreno mucho en el agua. No hay mejor forma de progresar que horas y horas en el mar, pero también es muy importante complementarlo con salidas a correr, bicicleta y otros ejercicios que te dan mucha resistencia. Considero que hacer ejercicios de equilibrio y abdominales es fundamental. Ahora hago todo esto con la ayuda de Silvio Pedro de La Redonda (gimnasio) que nos apoya. También estamos entrenando 2 veces por semana con el equipo Argentino tanto físico como surf.

Qué marcas te ayudan?

Billabong, Freelife, Converse y X-torsion surfboards (aprovecho para agradecerle a todos por el constante apoyo).

Cuántas tablas tenes? Cuáles son las medidas?

Tenemos varias, no se cuantas por que las comparto con mis hermanas (risas) pero siempre ando con dos tablas chicas (5.10, 5.11 o 6.0) y una más grandecita para olas con más tamaño (6.4). Más o menos mi quiver se conforma así. Igual cada una tiene las suyas pero es bueno ir probando todas y surfar un poco con cada una y ver que te gusta más de una o de otra, para así llegar a la tabla perfecta para vos.

Tenés algún shaper como sponsor?

Hace ya varios años estamos trabajando con el Mono Mosquera de “X-torsion surfboards” que nos ayuda con las tablas y que tiene muy buen diseño y se adaptan a las olas que corremos regularmente, la verdad que están muy buenas!!

Cuáles fueron tus destinos surfísticos? Cuál fue el último?

Viajé a California, Brasil varias veces, Ecuador, Portugal y el ultimo Costa Rica!!!!!

Cómo es un día ideal de tu vida?

Levantarme temprano, surfar bueno, comer el Sanwich de pan bimbo “europeo” con queso, tomate y palta, dormir una siestita y volver al agua. Comer algo rico a la noche e irme a dormir tempranito para el dia siguiente poder a hacer lo mismo (típico día de Costa rica, lo mejor!!!)

Points preferidos?

Honu, Chapa, Playa negra (Costa Rica) y Montañita (Ecuador) y no nos vamos a olvidar de biolo!! (Biología).

Surferos favoritos?

El Rulo Prenski, Bethany Hamilton, Sofía Mulanovich y Jason Torres (CR)!!

Cuáles son tus planes para el futuro respecto al surf? Te gustaría participar de los eventos de ALAS, WQS? Que necesitas para competir en esos eventos?

Mis planes para el futuro es seguir participando en los eventos de la ISA. Están buenos por qué el nivel es excelente pero no demandan de viajar tanto, ni mucha plata ni mucho tiempo como puede ser el ALAS o el WQS. Si corrés esos circuitos tenés que dedicarte 100% al surf. Con los estudios se complica mucho!!

También en los próximos años me gustaría hacer buenos trips. Me gusta más el freesurf que las competiciones.

Qué otros deportes prácticas?

En el invierno trato siempre de ir a la nieve y hacer snowboard y a lo largo de mi vida jugué al hockey, handball y otros deportes de equipo.

Tengo entendido que tenés dos hermanas que surfean muy bien, contame un poco de ellas…

Yo vivo en Mar del Plata con Rochi. Ella es un año más grande que yo. Somos como gemelas y a la vez muy buenas amigas. Es una compañera excelente, siempre surfamos juntas, corre los campeonatos conmigo, viajamos, etc.

Loli es mi hermana que vive en Buenos Aires (somos todas de allá pero nosotras elegimos venir a vivir a Mdp). Ella surfea muy bien a pesar de la distancia que tiene que recorrer para meterse al mar. Viajamos mucho juntas y compartimos muchas sessions de surf!!
