~Janie Marlowe of Mischief sent me these adorable Bitty Bolero sweaters.  They are so cute and well textured and have prim cuffs, collar and waist tie.  They come in an array of colors and are only 150L per color!  I just love these for winter!
~The baggy socks are also from Mischief and are the November Group Gift.  I am not sure if previous gifts are available in the subscribo, but if not, hit it up anyway.  Janie sends really nice gifts frequently!

Someone’s been walking around with a huge ‘bruise’ on his neck the whole day. It takes some real skill at keeping a poker face in front of said person’s parents. But then, being Rachael, I started giggling while queueing at the mee pok stall with his mummy and pressed my fingers against my lips at a poor attempt to feign coughing. Through my peripheral vision I knew she’d noticed, so I distracted her by asking if the fishballs were handmade. Talk about conspicuity akin to a neon sign. Strange thing is, I swear my mouth isn’t heart-shaped. Hehe.

How do I hide my Hickey?
A hickey is put there to show up! It’s a mark of I-Was-Here. Why else did you get a hickey on your neck? But let’s assume that some wild hickey attacker got to you and now you have to hide the evidence. Again, it’s a bruise. It won’t just vanish with warm water or cold water or lukewarm water. You can get make-up concealer and try that, to cover it while it fades away naturally. Wear turtlenecks or scarves. If you tend to be a really slow healer, take vitamins and eat healthy food so your body has half a chance of healing up well. Stand in dark corners

It will NOT work to use water, ice, eye drops, or aspirin on your hickey. This is a bruise. Blood vessels are broken, they need to mend.

Apparently someone got teased when he went to MI at Funan to while time away. But it is apparently also nothing new because the lyingcheatinghornyslutfacedbitch used to always give him those too. But nothing like the size of the one I left. For the record, I sucked twice around the same area. I don’t have a huge mouth. He does.

How Do You Give a Hickey?
What you do is put your mouth against the side of their neck, in a kissing shape. You leave your mouth slightly open in the middle, like you’re saying the letter “O”. Now you suck in! You suck the skin into your mouth, in essence hurting it, and causing the blood vessels to break. This turns that circular area bright red. It doesn’t take long, maybe 30 seconds.

If you really aren’t good at suction, you can nibble with your teeth. But that is really a last resort, because now you’re not giving them a hickey. Now you’re just gnawing their skin to make it red.

Yes, giving a hickey hurts the person you’re doing it to. You’re breaking their blood vessels! But to some, a hickey is a temporary mark of love. Sort of like a red tattoo that fades naturally after a few days. It says “This girl (or guy) trusted me enough to let me damage their throat, one of the most sensitive parts of the human body”.

Wow. I like the explanation. Now, bite me.

So, in keeping with the Greek Philosophers philosophy

anybody got anything original? ✿

we are having fun at grandma holly and grandpa jim’s house.  my biggest struggle has been trying to decide what to play with next.  that’s not because there is too little to do…quite the opposite.  there are some many things to do it starts to make my head swim.  i can read some books, i can build with blocks, i can make animal noises with the stuffed animals, i can stack letter blocks, i can do puzzles, i can race cars down a race track, i can play with a huge shiny fire truck (that doesn’t have volume control – thanks auntie jamie!).  a couple of my favorite things thus far have been the play-doh and the jack-in-the-box.

the jack-in-the-box is a monkey inside the box that when i turn the crank for the music, at the end of the song he pops up!  his hands are also velcro, so i can stick them to anywhere on him, and that is what i do.  i have also learned how to cheat and open up the box to let him out without playing the music.  i pull the little latch in front of his door and out he comes.  grandma holly showed it to me first and i jumped back when that little monkey jumped out.  it scared me, but i liked it.

the other favorite thing was playing play-doh with auntie jamie.  grandma holly brought out a couple tubs of play-doh and some of her cookie cutters.  i made dogs, pumpkins, ghosts, christmas trees, pigs and many other things.  i also made a pink carrot – though jamie thought it looked more like a finger and gave it a fingernail.  i had a blast playing with the play-doh and all the cookie cutters.  grandma holly sure has a lot of those.  momma really liked it when i played with the play-doh because it is a quiet play.

Dry-erase maker can be removed from skin using:
- vinegar
- hand-sanitizer
- rubbing alcohol
- sunscreen
- denatured alcohol
- nail polish remover
- shaving cream
- facial cleansing pads
- toothpaste
- Tabasco sauce

Well, at least I won’t have to go shopping…

We asked the vet when Siya was a puppy, why does she fancy socks and shoes as chewing objects when she’s got her own teething toys. According to him, socks and shoes have a salty taste because they absorb our sweat. Applying powder should resolve the issue. In our household, talcum powder isn’t used much, and we were plain lazy to go and get some as part of her training.

One year has passed, and she now fancies more than just used socks and shoes. A washed sock can be a victim anytime. There are numerous odd socks waiting for their partner to join them in the cupboard. And no, they haven’t gone to that place in A Place Called Here.

The rubber bands I use to tie up my hair, the small clothes (I am not saying what for fear of spam in my blog), hankies – if she fancies it, she runs away with it. It’s pretty embarrassing when she runs out of the house with one of these items in her mouth for all the world to see, grinning away.

Moisturising lotion on our legs are wasted as well. Come out from the bath and havent toweled off the water on your legs? Siya’s the girl to lick it clean – along with any moisturising lotion.

Polo – with the hole – is a favourite of hers. If you leave any stick of polo around where she can reach, she runs out like a rocket with her prize. Even if it’s hidden beneath the quilt, she can smell it out (probably a forgotten stick too). It’s a waste wrestling it out from her mouth; the drool has probably soaked its way into all the mints.

Now you know how you can bribe my girl if you are visiting!

What does it mean when Philly’s favorite maestro finally makes the promised return only to leave without an encore? Riccardo Muti’s fans were at Verizon Hall to hear him with the New York Philharmonic Friday night. Old and young. Wistful Philadelphia Orchestra members, critics, the fair and the sycophants. The program was not the expected sizzzler. After waiting two years to hear him at the Kimmel Center (he called in with flu then shortly after kept his New York Phil assignments) were we wrong to expect some fireworks? Like the Avery Fisher Hall Martucci-Resphighi-Verdi thriller, Jan. 2007. Or the one with the Philadelphians at the Academy – remember The Pines of Rome!

No fireworks this time. Muti dove into Les Preludes, Liszt’s Symphonic Tone Poem, No. 3 as if he’d already gone to Chicago. Taut and steel and wicked-wonderful. Made me think of Barenboim (sorry, Riccardo). Since Liszt is a Barenboim trademarks like the Chicago Symphony, where Muti takes over in September. The Liszt was arresting, best of show: Phil Meyer led the horns. The brass blasted forth nearly as fine as Chicago in Verizon where the sounds at least in the parque came in and out of focus, nearly out of control, something this maestro had to find daunting to unacceptable.
The woodwinds have a wonder in young oboe principal Liang Wang. The mix of age is poignant reminder how symphony traditions matter, grow upon us, help us grow up. Seeing these New Yorkers on ‘our’ stage doesn’t feel right. Nor does this still flawed hall suit these players. It doesn’t suit this maestro either. Even the podium, with its high bar, didn’t flatter Muti’s stature.

The rest of the program dimmed the maestro’s lustre, big time. Bloody peculiar, to steal a phrase from the Brits, was the centerpiece: Elgar’s Concert Overture: In the South (Alassio) from 1904. Elgar and his wife took a holiday to Italy; it rained a lot. Then he found his inspiration (an image of Roman soldiers!) when the sun came out. The music has a Straussian bombast that doesn’t ring true. It shouldn’t. Elgar borrowed the opening tune from his earlier tribute to a dog.Dan Triumphant. When he lets go of the bluster, for lyricism things improve, In the South flows. Still: This is Elgar only Elgar fanatics will love. Something about The Muti’s reading had a hint of the maestro’s passion for Scriabin, too.

Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet, so fine, so beautiful, and disappointing. A terrific moment, the lightning quadruple fortissimo opening into The Montagues & Capulets, then the HUSH. Muti loves such extremes. He can control them. What he did not succeed in controlling was a mood of attention, of wonder. Sorrow, yes for Romeo and Juliet’s parting but little wonder.

If he gave us no encore, no doubt, he thought the concert didn’t live up to his standards. Whether he blamed it on the hall, the house (yes, coughing and some early applause before the final silence at Juliet’s Grave) his or their performance, moot points.
Muti’s given us riveting evenings, many times, many places. This wasn’t one. He knew it.
Maybe next time. With Chicago?

over the hills and through the woods to grandma holly’s house we go!  i was very excited to get into the car and drive to see grandma holly…that was until it was 7 hours later and we were in the middle of wisconsin with nothing but nothing to look at.  momma and dad did not warn me that the state we would drive the most through smelled like the underside of a cow.  luckily, grandma holly is worth it.

at first, everything was great.  we piled ourselves into grandma rene’s van (who let us borrow it for the week) and headed down the highway.  luke occupied himself in the seat behind me by either sleeping, laying, or playing with his new monkey teether.  i read my new books out loud, sang to myself and looked at all the semi-trucks that we passed.  eventually, i also asked for dad to play “jonah”.  this is a special playlist on his ipod that has (6) songs from the veggietales jonah movie.  i like to listen to them on repeat, so much so that i know many of the words and momma and dad could sing them fully without help.

we stopped for lunch just outside of rockford, illinois, and while momma fed luke, dad and i went exploring and found a huge pile of rocks.  dad also showed me dandelions and what fun they can be.  i noticed one that was yellow, and then he pointed out to me the ones that are called the “parachute ball”.  these have little seeds that i could blow off, thus helping spread the dandelions in that wendy’s lawn.  once we were inside, we sat down to eat – me with my whales (the shape of their chicken nuggets) and fries and luke with fries.  i didn’t like it that luke could eat fries without having to eat any whales.  though i guess he did eat his fruit and veggies of the pureed variety.

we finally made it to minnesota and none too soon.  i was starting to feel a bit crazed in the head and all my energy was beginning to give me the shakes.  i ran around and played with grandma holly and grandpa jim and had a blast.  then dad took me up to my big boy bed and i passed out.  i am so excited to be here!

It is a rarity for me to fail to finish a book. Particularly a historical romance, and more particularly a … well, this one so far hasn’t distinguished itself as a Regency which I assume is what it’s meant to be. And with a Carlyle quote on the cover it’s also meant to be bloody good. That got me over my initial dubiousness about a seventeen year old heroine. Seventeen!  But okay, there are plenty of sassy, sexy, sweet and smart debs running wild in my library. They just generally give a sense they have a life outside the scene, too. Flip a few more pages and hmmm. I can hear echoes of Wilde. Sophia, the eponymous courtesan and the mother in this book, sounds so much like Mrs Cheevly as played by Julianne Moore in An Ideal Husband (love that movie) that she’s distracting, and by Chapter Four I don’t need any more distractions.

Sad, really.

Einem geschenkten Gaul schaut man ja bekanntlich nicht ins Maul. Dennoch muss ich an dieser Stelle eine kleine Rezension des 30 Seconds to Mars Konzertes gestern im Astra Kulturhaus bringen.

Ich hatte die Karten freundlicherweise von meiner lieben Freundin Steffi von der EMI bekommen und da es doch nichts netteres gibt als das Wochenende mit Live-Musik einzuläuten nahm ich diese Art der Abendgestaltung gerne wahr. Man muss im Vorhinein sagen, dass ich nun mal nicht so wirklich auf 30 Seconds To Mars und ihre Musik stehe, auch wenn Jared Leto schon ein dufte Kerl ist. Das hat er mir und meiner ebenfalls weiblichen Begleitung auch live beweisen können (Ihr erster Kommentar: Och, is ja schon ganz schön hot ). Was allerdings seine Son Goku-mäßige Frisur und die hässliche Jeansweste sollten wird uns wohl immer ein Rätsel bleiben.

Musikalisch war es auf jeden Fall gar nicht mal soooo schlecht, auch wenn ich wohl niemals ein Fan seinwerde. Gerockt haben sie auch ganz nett. Vor allem die Interaktion mit dem Publikum gefiel mir. Schließlich ist das Konzept der Produktion des neuen Albums gewesen, die Fans und ihre Choräle zu in die Aufnahme zu integrieren. Schön, dass dies nicht nur ein PR-Gag war sondern auch bei der Tour umgesetzt wird. Trotzdem war die Leistung der Herren schon ein bißchen schwach. Der ganze Spaß hat nämlich nur knapp ne Stunde gedauert und den treuen Fans die auch noch 3 Zehner dafür hingelegt hatten war die Enttäuschung ins Gesicht geschrieben.

Eben diese Fans waren für mich das Highlight des Gigs. Mir war zwar schon bewusst, dass die Band einen riesigen Fanclub plus super aktiven Street Team hat, aber das es Männer (!!!) gibt, die der Band hinterher reisen, hätte ich kaum angenommen. Die Gespräche mit eben solchen Fans waren für mich letztendlich doppelt so interessant wie die Performance der Band selbst.

Auf dem Rückweg wurde ich in der Tram übrigens mal wieder mit der Verrücktheit Berlins konfrontiert: Nach nur einer Station stiegen nämlich ein paar Leute mit einem Kinderwagen ein in dem statt eines Kindes eine Lautsprecher Box saß aus der lauter Techno tönte. Da ich saß wurde dieser auch zum Glück nur direkt vor meiner Nase abgestellt. Die Besitzer waren drupp wie Nachbars Lumpi, hatten sich und den Kinderwagen in Stofffetzen eingewickelt und konnten so gar nicht verstehen, dass die Fahrgäste die Musik nicht so prall fanden. Manchmal kann eine 15 minüte Fahrt echt lang sein…
