On Wednesday, South Carolina representative Joe Wilson’s “You lie!” outburst was officially filed under the annals of Career-Killing Political Mistakes (which also houses Howard Dean’s scream, John Edwards’ mistress, and Larry Craig’s sex-soliciting loafers).  Wilson’s Democratic challenger in the upcoming 2010 election, retired Marine Robert Miller, has already raised more than $400,000 in the aftermath.

Even though Wilson quickly apologized, his outburst is just another sad chapter in South Carolina’s illustrious history.  The state has always suffered in obscurity as merely a drive-through on to Florida.  It has no important cities (try to name two cities in South Carolina) and few famous South Carolinians.  At least South Dakota has Tom Brokaw… South Carolina?  The only recognizable name on a “famous people South Carolina” search was Vanna White.  I’ll take an “F”, please.

It seems that South Carolina is always living in the shadows of big brother North Carolina, futiley swiping for our attention.  In June, South Carolina’s governor Mark Sanford tried to upstage North Carolina’s John Edwards for the “Best Affair in the Carolinas” award.  Sanford, who had claimed to be “hiking the Appalachian trail” during a mysterious disappearance, was instead hiking up skirts in Argentina.  When he finally came back, Sanford admitted to the affair in a rambly, teary press conference reminiscent of Brett Favre’s (first) retirement speech.  Soon after, the state newspaper published the governor’s Danielle Steel-esque correspondence with his Argentine lover: only in South Carolina would a guy write about his tractor in a love letter to the mistress.

And who can forget Miss Teen South Carolina in 2007?  At least Caitlin Upton made us all aware of the importance of education in the United States.  And it reminded us why South Carolina is not only the worse of the two Carolinas, but that the state university is also the worse of the two USCs.

Hajde da priznamo da fakat živimo u diktaturi koja ulazi u svaku poru našeg društva – u vladavini jedne potrošačke kulture, ispraznog svijeta koji se sa pravom može nazvati “Runway” kultura. Naše društvo se u posljednje vrijeme izbirikalo po pitanju rječnika. Meinstrim potrošačkog pop-Runway drutva (u našem slučaju pop-folkeraj društva) je počeo da koristi eufemizme. Tako, Milo više nije Lopov nego je u-neku-ruku-kontroverzni političar, Ruski KGBovci koji su (opet eufemizam – diskutabilno) postali oligarsi su danas Biznismeni, Jelena Karleuša je umjetnica, a bivša manekenka nikako nije neobrazovana, plitka sponzorusa, nego dobija laskavu doživotnu titulu “bivši supermodel”.

Koliko sam ja uspio da vidim, eufemizmi nikad nisu nikome dobro donijeli. A ko ih izmisli? Etimološko porijeklo riječi “eufemizam” potiče od grčkog “eufema” znači “dobar govor”, suprotno “blastfemi” ili “lošem govoru”, što je za stare Grke bilo glasno izgovaranje imena bogova i drugih religioznih tabua.

Malo po malo, kako su antički religiozni tabui bivali sve dalji, a centri moći u potrošačkom Runway društvu sve bliži – eufemizme koristimo da ne bi, ne daj bože, oskrnavili integritet tajkuna, bivših manekenki, umjetnika Dada (Polumente, ne Đurića) i ostalih likova iz galerije potrošačkog Runway društva.

U skorije vrijeme cvjeta ljubav između ruskih tajkuna i bivših manekenki. Prava ljubav; ruski egzotični šarm je izgleda neodoljiv, a romantična priroda tih tajkuna je ukratko smrt za lijepe žene. Niko, ne dao Bog, ne pomišlja da je onaj ruski tajkun najobičniji mafijaš, a da je ona manekenka što se udala za njega sponzoruša. Na takvu jednu “blastfemu”, na takav prostački pogled – koji ne unižava one gromade i veličine Runway društva, već mene samog, seljaka sa Durmitora – mediji Runway društva stavljaju svojevrsnu cenzuru. A znate šta je najgori efekat censure? Autocenzura; neće proći ni deset godina a mi ćemo se sami spriječavati da mislimo na takav priprost način. Pamti, pamti, pamti – Grand parada proizvodi talente!

Kao svaka diktatura, Runway mašina potrošačkog društva je toliko moćna da postavlja standarde – mediji te mašinerije mogu da spinuju javnost dotle da ona povjeruje u ama baš sve što mašinerija hoće – može bilo koja folk pjevačica postati pop pjevačica, može mafijaš postati biznismen, seljak – neseljak, a političar koji truća najobičnije gluposti – filozof. I, upravo kao svaka dikratura, vi ste ili dio nje, ili ste joj neprijatelj – ako se ovako nastavi, neka vas ne čudi što kritizere Šaka Polumente prikažu kao seljake, a samog Šaka Polumentu kao emancipovanog građanina. Postaćete neprijatnija vaša pojava nego njegova pjesma, ako je to moguće.

Diktatura divova potrošačkog Runway društva je toliko jaka i sveobuhvatna da su hiljade glava koje kleče pred njima zaista povjerovale u njihovu priču. Runwayev sistem vrijednosti je zaista ubojito dizajniran – na prvi pogled, moral je besprijekoran, uz male, jedva primjetne modifikacije koje je pokretačka mašina Runway društva ugradila. Jer, Runway potrošački sistem vrijednosti i mora biti najsličniji vrijednostima velikog dijela populacije; manekenka Heidi Klum će biti gost u emisiji Opre Vinfri i tu će govoriti o ljubavi, poštenju, porodičnim vrijednostima, djeci i sreći, čak i o svojoj vjeri i trenutku u kome je pronašla Hrista… nasložiće prosječnim majkama i domaćicama toliko đubreta da zaboravimo da se ona, majka koja ima divan, divan odnos sa kćerkom, slikala gola za nekoliko magazina, da je ta glasnogovornica zdrave hrane svako malo u rehabilitacionom centru zbog droge, i da je ona, koja savjetuje majke, važan dio mašinerije koja njihove rođene kćerke vrednuje kao robu.

Režim potrošačkog Runway društva, kao i svaki režim, ima svoje fanatike – a to su ljudi koji su rođeni u sistemu, odgajani u sistemu, i pušteni u sistem sa jedninim razlogom da budu fanatici, jer jedno društvo je stabilnije ako ima svoje ludake. Klasičan primjer takve ispranosti mozga je većina sadašnjih modnih dizajnera. U njihovom poslu umjetnosti je vrlo malo – i kroz njihove radove i kroz njihovu priču vide se prazne floskule koje je mašina Runway izmislila i zaslijepljujuća fascinacija vrhom potrošačke Runway piramide. Na “lokalnom” nivou, voditeljke TV Pinka nisu dobar primjer fanatika potrošačkog društva – jer, po jednoj anketi, među osnovkama nešto manje od 50% njih želi da bude manekenka ili voditeljka zabavnog programa – te djevojčice su kandidati za istinske fanatike. Oni će, za deset godina, biti gorivo za Runay potrošačku mašinu!

Jedinstvenu sliku cijelog procesa možemo vidjeti ako gledamo naše sopstveno društvo, Crnu Goru, i “process” tokom dvadeset godina. “Proces” se odnosi na mnogo stvari – na uspon TV Pinka, Turbo Folka i njegovih zvijezda, i mnogobrojnih bogataša koji su do dan danas važan potporni stub naše domaće Runway potrošačke mašine. “Proces” se vremenski poklapa i utiče na jedan drugi, dugi process – moralni sunovrat naše zemlje i našeg društva i slom vrijednosnog sistema kojim se Crna Gora nekad ponosila. Devedesetih se popularizovala institucija sponzoruša, ispočetka gruba i prosta – danas sofisticirana. Baš kao što su se naši tajkuni, od klasičnih mafioza sa lančevima i crnim naočarima, transformisali u poklonike mode i mecene Runway potrošačkog društva, tako su se transformisale i naše sponzoruše, mada je osnovna, kurvinska priroda toga posla preživjela kao najizdržljiviji virus.

Za kraj, ima jedan veoma popularan YouTube video takmičenja za izbor Tinejdžerske Mis Amerike (Miss Teen America) i finalistkinje iz Južne Karoline. Ostvario joj se san – postala je poznata, doduše kao kreten, ali slava je slava. Mis Južne Karoline je bila pitana za njeno mišljenje o činjenici da 50% Amerikanaca ne može da locira Sjedinjene Američke Države na mapi svijeta. I tu je ova diva Runway potrošačke culture krenula da elaboriše; to je bilo slaganje sintagmi, nemogućih konstrukcija i besmislica tolikih da su zasmijale i voditelja šoua. Svoj jednominutni govor je završila sa riječima “This way we can build a better future”. Te riječi je iskoristio svaki političar na obije strane Atlantika. Ova plavokosa djevojka je živi primjer nepobitive činjenice – potrošačka Runway kultura je uzela maha svugdje, a njeno jednominutno lupanje je nuspojava. Izgleda da je najjasnija Mis Karolini i potrošačkoj Runway kulturi kog se mogu sjetiti jedna pjesma Partibrejkersa, “Ti nisi Julija, ja nisam Romeo, noćas sam nešto gadno pojeo; lepo pričaš, lepo hodaš, slatka mala nemoj lako da se prodaš…”

So no doubt you’ve heard about Miss California and how she answered a question about Gay Marriage in a beauty pageant.  The question was asked by media-drama queen Perez Hilton:

It’s been interesting to watch how the various media outlets have cut and spliced the event. 

There are multiple reasons why I think these made such big news; but I think there are two that stand out the most:

1) The event was pretty unusual-anything outside of the norm steals the show.  Remember when the media picked up on Miss Teen South Carolina’s response?:

We stereotype beauty pageant constentants as not being, ehr shall we say, Albert Einsteins.  Because Miss Teen South Carolina’s response was so way out there even for beauty pageant standards, it made huge news because the news media thrives on the unusual. 

2) Usually during the beauty pageants, questions of such complexity or controversy are not asked-the more usual questions are those that have to do with neutral topics like “what is your opinion of world hunger” or the like.  Miss California’s response stood out also because it was not a “neutral” response but rather one loaded with conflict, which the media just loves.    

3)The massive right-wing media is having a field day with this.  She’s now being paraded around as an example of how the “gay mafia” is trying to take over the world because it took poor little innocent Miss California’s crown away.  Yes, I can almost see the commercials on the right-wing propaganda network Fox News starting with Miss California crying over what “was done to her” and then ridiculously asking “what’s next? putting you in jail for opposing gay marriage?”  Amazing how they can manipulate the public’s perception huh?

I am about half way through Love Over Scotland by Alexander McCall Smith and decided to take a quick break and check things out.  Actually, I’ve just read the passage I want to quote for the review, so I’ve started it up and saved it, and thought I’d take a break before going back to the book.  It’s been a slow book to get into, not helped by the fact that it’s the third book in a series I’ve never read, I’m sure.  But in the last 30 pages or so, I’ve decided I really like it.

From what I can tell, she’s gone into her blog’s search term refferals and posted the ones she liked best.  I’ve always found some of the searches people use to find my own blog rather interesting to read… and sometimes completely bizarre… but I’ve never really gone “in depth” with my look-sees.  Here are a few that I’ve found:

This campaign has brought out a lot of creativity from the populace. There are photos, videos and songs floating about for all to share. Halfway through today’s morning post I decided it was enough merriment and share some videos I found this morning that made my head spin around. With one week to go, all indications look sound for the Blue team. -  On a more serious note, my hat tips to Robert Greenwald for his consistent measures to right the wrongs. In recent weeks, the McCain campaign has been attacking ACORN, a widely respected voter registration organization, claiming ACORN knowingly participated in “voter fraud.” In reality, this is just another calculated attempt by the McCain campaign and the RNC to suppress new and marginalized voters.

-  And you wonder why this guy is losing?

-  This is astonishingly awful and why they are going to lose in a week. A supporter of Sarah Palin shouts the n-word in a reference to Barack Obama while Palin herself attempts to connect her opponent to “other countries where people are not free.” This time it’s clear that Palin actually heard what the person said, because the racial slur broke her stride and caused her to stammer for a brief second before continuing in her sentence. However, she did nothing to condemn her supporters’ racism, and even seemed to egg it on by suggesting that Obama is not a real American but belongs in some other country, such as perhaps Iran.

Deposed beauty queen relieved she chose the Louis Vuitton over the Coach

Miss Teen Louisiana was arrested over the weekend and charged with drug possession in a foiled “dine-and-dash” operation that cost the current beauty pageant queen(pin) her crown and sash.

Wait staff solved the mystery with the help of local law enforcement when they scoured the booth crime scene and discovered that one of the would-be dashers left a purse behind. Police considered dusting the bag for fingerprints, but after a heated discussion decided to simply check the contents for identification.

A wallet found in the purse contained the driver’s license of Lindsey Evans who was declared Miss Teen Louisiana late last year. Also in the wallet was two grams of “suspected” marijuana. Results of that separate investigation are apparently ongoing. However, after looking at, smelling, and eventually smoking the alleged drug, police officers strongly believed that they were, in fact, dealing with cannabis. The suspect was apprehended when she returned later to regain the left purse, presumably once her high had receded.

Miss Teen Louisiana was informed of her title, crown, and sash revokation on Monday by the pageant sponsors, but it was made clear that no prizes or cash awards need be returned. TRJ operatives close to the situation believe that this would have been impossible, seeing as how all of these had been used to purchase drugs anyway.

Sure to become a major subject of blogger mockery and lampooning, Ms. Evans may finally supplant Caitlin Upton, better known as 2006’s Miss Teen South Carolina as the interweb’s most humiliated and (seemingly?…hopefully?) drug-addled teen beauty pageant winner. TRJ was recently reminded of Ms. Upton’s infamous meltdown when it was discovered by our team that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin shared Upton’s pageant prep coach, who was jettisoned after a series of similar responses to interviews by ABC’s Katie Couric.

That’s right. Lindsey Evans, the reigning Miss Teen Louisiana, tried to run out on a restaurant tab that she and her hell raising friends ran up at a posh Bossier City eatery. The 4 young people purposely ran up a ridiculous tab of $46.07 then took off. (What the hell, how many bottles of Courvoisier were they downing?)

The would be thieves would have been able to pull off this major heist if not for one tiny problem. Beautiful Lindsey accidentally left her purse behind at the table. Unfortunately, the purse not only contained her license but also a bag of weed. Turns out Miss Louisiana is a stoner as well as a food thief. (This actually makes sense as the two usually run hand in hand).

When Lindsey returned to the restaurant to retrieve her purse, the police were waiting for her. Her three accomplices, apparently also just as intelligent as Lindsey, came rolling into the restaurant parking lot with her and were charged with a variety of crimes as well.

To her credit, in spite of her misfortune, Lindsey took a fine mug shot. I credit this to her years of pageant training.

Frankly, Lindsey’s bad fortune is good publicity for Louisiana. Who knew that they had any attractive women down there in Bayou country? She has all of her teeth and seems to have a reasonably correct height to weight ratio. Sure, her IQ is still in short bus territory but you can’t have everything.

By the way. Don’t confuse Miss Teen Louisiana with Miss Teen South Carolina although they may share a similar intelligence pattern.

If 10 years ago someone said, “hey be careful investing in banks, you might bankrupt the country,” they might’ve been considered the stupidest, or funniest person on Earth. If that headline ran in any newspaper, it would’ve happened on April 1st. And now, I’m really not even surprised. I’m just curious. And I’m also tempted to take bets on whose next to go. You’d probably have a better chance of making money that way than putting it into the markets. Someone should look into the Swiss economy, they love banks. Super-secretive banks that get to be in all the cool action movies. And no, The Da Vinci Code doesn’t count as a cool action movie (although they do sneak a Swiss bank in there).

Today has been a busy day for the world economy. Six of the largest banks in the world reduced interest rates in conjunction with one another. It is an impressive display of solidarity in the face of adversity. The Fed reduced rates by 50 basis points. It is a truly stressful time. If I were an executive of a failing (or failed) company, especially one being rescued by the government, I think that I would have to take a week off and relax before I could really dig into the problems. I wonder if AIG is hiring, because that’s exactly what they did.

AIG Guy: We need $85 billion to stand a chance

Government: You’re going to have to change your ways, reduce waste, yada yada yada.

AIG Guy: Of course we will… C’mon! Who do you think we are? Now give us the money.

Government: Okay.

$440,000 on a week-long retreat. That is awesome. You can’t be mad at that kind of audacity. The government now owns 79% of that company. Whoever authorized that trip KNEW that it would be days before we found out. And they did it anyway. That takes some kind of… something.

The Presidential debate went off as expected. 45 Minutes spent on the economy. Obama won in almost every regard, at least according to preliminary CNN Polls. He also got higher marks for answering questions directly. McCain wasn’t spectacular, and I don’t believe there is anything he can do to win the election. Unless McCain has a super-secret weapon to drop into the race,  it’s officially Obama’s to lose. If Barack stays cool, continues raising and spending money like a failed Wall Street firm, and doesn’t say anything ridiculous he’ll win. Unless of course, the country remembers that he is black.

I hate to say it like that, but it’s true and it scares me. A distant member of my family, a lifelong and staunch democrat admitted that she, “is going to have to vote for McCain because we picked a black guy.” Another quote, from an acquaintance, “I’m going to vote for the old guy over the darkie.” These are real. I wish I could say that they are isolated incidents, but I don’t believe that to be true. I’m not the only one saying this.

We really have to get over this racism thing. Everyone, through and through. Sexism and other forms of discrimination should be thrown out the window as well.

To the United States of America: GET OVER IT!

One of my favorite lines to parody, “If you don’t love America, you can get out.” It’s a South Park quote I believe. Well I’ll take it a step further/farther (feel free to enlighten me as to the proper use, I haven’t seen Finding Forester in a long time): “If you don’t love the people who make America what it is, then…” and feel free to add a colorful ending if you so choose.

If only my little old blog could permanently end this garbage, and in under 1000 total words. I would be happy.

I’ve really enjoyed the full coverage offered by CNN throughout this election. They have done a fair job of keeping things balanced. Their election website is thorough, and they’re television coverage is the most informative around. They must be paying a fortune for all of it. I have one bone to pick, and it’s an old one but I just remembered. Ever forget? Happened to me.

Leslie Sanchez is a republican strategist, political commentator, and advocate for women’s and Hispanic rights. I think that’s awesome. She has done and will probably continue to do an incredible amount of quality work in a multitude of fields. She has been working with CNN on this election. During the Democratic National Convention, the CNN pundits gave grades to speeches. Leslie Sanchez, if you will notice, gave Michelle Obama a B grade. It was the lowest of the commentators, but completely fine. What I found ridiculous was that each pundit was given about two sentences to describe what they thought. Sanchez said:

Is it the dress or what’s in it? Michelle Obama covered the key milestones but the image of her in a      cocktail dress left us wondering.

Thanks for the Insight, Political Pundit.. I mean Women's Advocate... I mean, wait, why are you on National Television?

A women’s advocate, given two sentences to describe or comment on the first truly national speech given by another women, and she goes after the dress. I thought it was wrong. I e-mailed Leslie and told her. I’m still waiting on a response. Maybe they should give her job to Miss Iceland. Or Miss Teen South Carolina.

That’s all I’ve got for the day, but I promise, tomorrow we’ll compare the economy to both the emperor with no clothes and bad plumbing.

  Everytime I see Sarah Palin I was reminded of other uncomfortable interviews and Q&A’s in front of the camera that just made me feel bad, for the person asking, for the person answering, bad for people watching. It is the most uncomfortable thing to  be on the spot and draw a blank.

Sarah seems to be building a resume of horrible interviews. It starts with “In what respsect Charlie?”, builds to silence from questions regarding newspaper reading with the Couric interview. The couric interview is done in segments and each segment is more painful to watch than the previous.

I didn’t have to think back very far to recall the very person Sarah Palin reminded me of. If John mcCain and Sarah Palin get elected…. I am headed to Cuba. Viva la Che’

A series of Sarah Palin interviews with Katie Couric have proved disastrous for the Republican vice presidential nominee.  However, in a recent interview she finally nailed one.  Here’s her answer:

Katie Couric: Governor Palin, there has been quite a bit of discussion about your perceived lack of foreign policy experience, and I want to give you your chance, if you could please respond to that criticism and give us specific skills that you think you have to bring to the White House to rebut that or mitigate that concern.

Sarah Palin: I personally believe that, U.S. Americans are unable to do so, because some… people out there in our nation that don’t have maps, and I believe that our education, like such, as in South Africa and Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should… our education over here in the U.S., should help the U.S., er, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future.., for our children.
