Last month Miss USA won the coveted crown of Miss Universe. As is tradition in pageants, if the winner is not able to finish her year as title holder, the first runner up assumes the title and the crown. Nana Meriwether was the first runner up to Miss USA and she must have been overjoyed when Miss USA won Miss Universe because that then automatically made her the new Miss USA.

Crystle Stewart, then 26, being crowned the new Miss USA 2008 by outgoing titleholder Rachel Smith.

Crystle Stewart, then 26, being crowned the new Miss USA 2008 by outgoing titleholder Rachel Smith.

Last winter, 20-year-old Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Rhode Island USA. It was her first pageant, and she won on her first try. But then she won Miss USA. And then, most recently, she won Miss Universe. So the question begs, why can’t we all be as lucky as Culpo, to sweep every pageant we’ve competed in on our first try?

Rewind back to 2008. Then 26-year-old Crystle Stewart’s story is one for the books. In the world of pageantry, she is not only an inspiration, but somewhat of a legend. Originally from Missouri City, Texas, Stewart decided to compete for the title of Miss Texas USA 2003. The phrase “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” has never been more accurate for someone, as she competed five times for the title before finally capturing the crown. Her last year of eligibility, Stewart followed her dreams and not only represented Texas at Miss USA, but won that crown as well.

As someone who has competed in pageantry for multiple years now, I can relate with Crystle. I have competed four times in the Miss Universe Organization, placing as a non-finalist once, third runner up once, and first runner up twice. Ouch. Needless to say, I feel her pain. But someone who dedicates so much time and hard work to her dream and places top five in the 2008 Miss Universe pageant is the perfect example of the inspiration to never give up.

For those who compete, January is the end of one of two pageant seasons. November, December and January consisted of the state preliminary pageants, Miss America (not affiliated with the Miss Universe Organization), and of course, the granddaddy of them all, Miss Universe.

So what does that mean for the women like myself? Surely I’m not alone in being a runner up multiple years in a row. The time, the commitment, everything involved when it comes to pageantry, can all take a toll on a woman who dedicates her heart and soul to a goal only a set of judges can decide if she can achieve. But what does it mean? The answer is simple.

Don’t give up.

Be persistent. Persistency is rewarded to the people who try and try until they get what they want. Although we may not all be as lucky as Olivia Culpo to win on our first shot, follow Crystle Stewart’s example, or the example of the dozens of other titleholders who competed for years before they won. Follow Erika Frantzve, or Alexis Swanstrom, or Brittany Sharp.

Because do you remember that one girl who competed and competed but never won because she gave up?

Neither does anyone else.

Today I had a feeling of joy, ecstasy, excitement, wonderment, amazement, and happiness! Last year,

Today I had a feeling of joy, ecstasy, excitement, wonderment, amazement, and happiness! Last year, one of the celebrity examples I look up to, Alyssa Campanella, who apparently was Miss USA 2011 and was able to reach the top sixteen during the Miss Universe 2011 beauty pageant held in Brazil, posted a status in her Facebook account. She stated that she wanted to send her fans letters or gifts and she also asked for her fans’ addresses. Since she is one of the influential people I look up to as an example for women and for ladies to follow, as well as she is my favorite beauty queen, I decided to post my complete address on her Facebook status, without any knowledge that she might take heed or even notice it. Many fans of hers posted on the comment their complete address as well. I didn’t really expect that she would even send me a letter. Although at that time, I wish she would.

It turned out that my presumptions were wrong! Tonight, when I arrived home from school, I didn’t expect anything special would happen. When I greeted my grandmother as I arrived in our house, she told me that someone sent me a letter. I asked her whom was it from. She told me she didn’t know. I was bewildered because I didn’t know who the sender was, why did the sender sent me the letter, what was the purpose of the sender to send me the letter, and why would I even receive a letter if I have not had attended nor was involved in any special groups or affiliated with important organizations. I also didn’t remember giving out my address to anyone. I was curious about the letter and when I looked on the table in our house, I saw a yellow envelope that was meant for me and then I noticed that it came from the United States of America because of the stamps. There were three stamps posted on the upper right edge at the back of the yellow envelope and each of the stamps contained an image of the American Flag and beneath the picture of the American Flag were the words that said, “Freedom Forever” and, “Liberty Forever.” Because of this, I thought that the sender of the letter is my aunt living in America or any relative that I have that is currently residing in the States. But if one of my relatives would send me a letter, sometimes, he/she would not send it through the traditional mailing method but sends it through e-mails or Facebook messages. They would notify me in advance. When I saw the image of the stamps and the words that were imprinted on them, and when I read my name and my complete address handwritten on the center of the envelope, I was excited and nervous to open the letter. I had no clue who gave it to me in the first place. I picked the letter up on the table and directly went inside my room. When I was in my room, I didn’t think twice and unhesitatingly opened the letter and eventually discovered what was inside.

I was in awe by what I found. Behold, in my hands, was the picture of Miss USA 2011, Alyssa Campanella with her message written on it. In her picture, she was sitting down, her legs stretched and her knees slightly arched to show the slope of her thighs and of her legs; her hands were holding the iconic Miss USA tiara; and her eyes were looking straight at me fiercely and piercingly. She wore a beautiful creamy white dress with a skirt made of chiffon cloth. She wore red high-heeled shoes and was able to emphasize them more clearly when her feet were raised as her knees were arched and bent. It was a stunning pose of hers and I can say that she truly has a stellar expertise in the field of modeling. Written on the right side of the photo were the words she wrote as her message to me. The words stated, Angelo, You’re awesome! All the best! XoXo, Alyssa Campanella. When I looked at her photo and when I read her message, my overjoyed feeling seemed to be utterly indescribable and completely unexplainable. I flipped the letter and looked at the back part. On the back portion of the letter, she also posed for a picture and she was smiling. Her name was written in a huge font including the words, “Miss USA 2011” in a larger font. The address was also written on the bottom left side of the paper in bold letters. I simply could not explain the feeling I felt when I held her letter and her envelope in both of my hands. I was jumping inside my room and immediately, I opened the door of my room, went outside, and ran towards my sister who was using the laptop in our dining area. She was startled at me when I reached her and she told me to calm myself down. I was panting and I was gasping for air. The feeling of excitement and of joy deprives a person to breathe air properly. I told my sister the good news and she congratulated me in return. Finally, I decided to go back into my room and contemplate on the wish that was granted to me on this day.

My emotions are indescribable, uncontainable, and unexplainable. I couldn’t help but smile and always mumble to myself my words of thanks to Alyssa. I already understand why other people, when they receive something from their favorite celebrity or a famous person they look up to or when they see them personally for the first time, couldn’t help but cry, wail, scream, and leap for joy. The feeling is the same as receiving a high mark on an examination of Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, or any subjects that one would find difficult to understand and to master. I know that I am not the only person who feels the same thing but others would feel this way as well. With the letter that Alyssa gave to me, I can label this day as the best day so far for me in the year 2013. The letter was unexpected, but at least Alyssa was able to send me one and she has no idea how happy I am right now. Most certainly, this day is truly memorable and should not be forgotten. I am keeping this letter as a souvenir and when I meet her personally someday (which is another wish I am now anticipating to be granted), I would most likely show the letter she gave me and remind her that she is one of my inspirations in the entertainment and in the modeling industry.

There are people in life whom we always set as an example for ourselves and who we are all eager to meet personally, to become friends with, to receive letters from, and to adore for who they are. But we must become considerate for the people we adore in our lives. For me, Alyssa Campanella is one example for a true beauty queen. She is beautiful on the outside yet she is even more beautiful on the inside. I am not saying this just because she gave me a letter which I technically didn’t expect to receive. I adore her as a person and I admire her as a human being because she has done what not all females in this world can do – set herself as an example for other people. She has a very graceful personality and she has a very virtuous character. She has participated in charitable events and organizations, devoted her time and effort to her job, and she is very friendly to her fans. I think people should become wise and knowledgeable enough to find people who have a character of virtuosity that can set as an example for them to follow.

There is a new show coming out on the Oxygen network on February 12th 9/8c, called The Face. Now if you know anything about the modeling world (or even if you don’t, I’m sure you’ll recognize their faces) there are some major names involved, Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova and Coco Rocha. I take it from the information readily available it is very similar to America’s Next Top Model, with the winner becoming the face of ULTA, the growing cosmetics retail chain.

I must say that I don’t really watch a lot of shows like this, but this will be one I’ll be watching! Now here is why: one of my oldest and dearest friends, the amazing Brittany Mason will be competing on the show. I met Brittany ages ago via the beauty pageant world. We quickly bonded and became great friends. She is a former Miss Indiana USA and made it to the top ten at Miss USA. She is a sweetheart that is so giving and compassionate. With all that said she needs our help!

She is up for voting right now, please follow the link above and vote for Brittany to make it to Round 2!

A little something extra for all of you out there, I created a few photo collages of us through out the many years that we have been friends. You can also check out some shots of her on my fashion line’s website at www.vamyna.com. She’s been helping out my budding line by getting some shots in some of our dresses and swimsuits.

Thanks again for your help

The first time I flew after the airport security checks were stepped up after 9/11 and an agent opened my suitcase and started touching my personal items, I felt a sense of violation. I then decided to make sure I always checked my luggage in before going to security.

However, sometimes after the flight, when I picked up my luggage, there would be a note inside my suitcases saying that my bags had been searched. I could tell someone had opened my suitcases because things were not in places where I had originally put them. This was even more aggravating. I didn’t even see the person. I don’t know who touched my underwear and what they did to my things when I was not there.

Later, the full-body X-ray scanners were placed in various airports. Well, I had a choice. I could stand in this machine with my arms held in the air like one is ordered to do when a policeman stops a suspected criminal. While standing there with my arms over my head, I would be shot with radiation. There are debates about whether the radiation from these machines is harmful or not. However, my common sense tells me that if there is enough radiation used that allows one to take pictures of the innards of a person — well, that just seems like more radiation than I want to deal with since I travel a lot.

As I said, I had a choice of stepping in that machine and being radiated or ‘opting out’ which meant, an agent would have to give me a pat-down. I have traveled frequently over the past several years and I have never entered a body scanning machine. I have always opted out. I prepare myself mentally and physically for the pat-down.

First, I always arrive at the airport really early so that I don’t feel rushed or stressed. I also arrive early because whenever I tell the security people that I choose to ‘opt out’ of the ‘naked body scanner’; I am told I have to ‘wait’ while they find a woman who is available to do the pat-down.

I show up at the airport wearing body shields that I purchased here. Just in case I am ever forced to go through one of those machines, I have breast shields that fit inside my bra and another shield that protects the lower stomach/ovary region. This is protected not only from the radiation but insures privacy in body scanner images by covering the intimate parts of the body. (I do understand that the so-called naked body scanners are being phased out of the airports.)

But, I don’t stop there. I wear a leotard or some kind of one-piece under garment underneath my outer clothing. This gives me some peace of mind that no one can accidently slip their hands in my pants; as I have heard has happened to other women [Miss USA, Susie Castillo story]. I never go with any agent to a private area. I let the agents know I’m okay with the pat-down happening in the public area.

I also bring old or cheap socks to put on my feet when I remove my shoes – especially in the summer. I don’t like the feeling of being barefoot in an airport. Plus, for sanitary reasons, it just feels better to have my feet covered. Once I am through security, I toss the socks in the trash.

Every now and then I’ll have to deal with a ‘power-tripping’ agent who likes to yell orders as if we are all prisoners in a detainee camp. The way I deal with this is by reminding myself that this person has probably been the victim of some type of abuse and they are ‘acting-out’.

All of this might seem a bit extreme to some. However, for those of us who have ever been emotionally or sexually violated in any way, we must do what we feel necessary to feel safe and in control of the situation as much as possible.

In summation, I believe that going through TSA checkpoints can be unsettling (to say the least) for former victims of abuse. And, depending on the situation can create new trauma. In the end, it is all relative. What might upset one person is okay with another.

As always, if you ever feel that your security check was embarrassing or intrusive. Please talk to someone you trust about it. Don’t keep those feelings and emotions bottled up inside.

Anybody that knows me personally, knows first hand that I do not support any type of tomfoolery , buffoonery or foolishness of any kind. RHOA represents the same stereotypical images that African Americans have fought for decades and it is a step backwards in the achievements and the strides that have been made, truth be told. From a practical point, what does one actually gain from watching this show that can be useful in an everyday forum? It goes to show you that any fool can have money but wealth, civil conduct, intellect & health are not represented or not upheld on any level. What is the moral in such waste of space & airtime? (Im not going to go too hard..being very generous on this one).

However, I was very pleased to see the saving grace of the show in recent promos. I have been a die hard fan back when she was Miss USA. KENYA MOORE who adds a more brighter side to the show with her carefree personality is breath of fresh air (I STILL have never seen the show and don’t plan to anytime soon. If I want to hear and see a loud mouth..I can get a pet Chiwawa).

I feel its a step backwards for her being on the show, but she can also be considered the show’s saving grace. Continued success. Still fine. Still a stone fox. Smitten.

Now that Lisa Wu-Hartwell, Sheree Whitfield and Kim Zolciak are no longer adding their fiery verbiage to the Housewives Of Atlanta saga and the only original cast member, NeNe Leakes has flown the coop to tend to the business of getting rich in Hollywood, viewers might have thought things were never going to be the same with this reality show- well, think again!

The drama in season 5 of Housewives is not only fodder for g-moguls, like yours truly, but, brings the funny along with the shock valued “no she didn’t” and who doesn’t like their reality television spicy and funny at the same time? Recently, on the show, Phaedra got into a contractrial disagreement over her “Donkey Booty” video that she and hubby, Apollo want to make sh$tloads of money on. They, asked for the expertise of former Miss USA and one of the newest members to join the show, Kenya Moore. Ms. Moore, as y’all know got her own stuff to deal with, that fake Walter relationship that never was, the backlash from her disrespecting the legacy of Portia Stewart’s grandfather. Did y’all see Kenya turn up her nose and complain about the smell of manure on the property? Nasty Janet Jackson moment- that was.

Okay, so the beef went down with Phaedra and Kenya over fees. Phaedra wanted favors and Kenya Moore wasn’t having it… she wanted 10% for distribution of the workout product.Ms. Lawyer woman said no. Seems Kenya was out for the count, but not for long. Ms. Kenya Moore is gone with the wind fabulous and has penned a single, aptly titled “Gone With The Wind Fabulous” which she debuted on Sunday night on Look What’s Live with Andy Cohen.

Kenya was twirling and twirling to the haters who doesn’t think she looks like Beyonce or that she is gone with the wind fabulous… A beautiful woman, indeed, but, a bit lacking where it really counts in self esteem, self love and a fierce knowing that she is enough-trust and believe:)
One more thing, people, Kenya Moore brings spice to the Atlanta Housewives, regardless of her lack of humility. At least she know there’s 365 days in a year-just saying’

holla’

Just a week after Kenya Moore was given the side eye for saying people mistake her for Beyonce all the time, she hit the stage on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen and did a fine Beyonce rendition.

Seriously, she had two flamboyant dancers that put you in the mind frame of all the remakes of Beyonce‘s “Single Ladies” video.

She even did the hand motions and facial expressions that are undeniably Beyonce’s signatures – and had a wind machine.

Check it out.

But if this isn’t entertaining enough, make sure you catch next week’s episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta. Kenya and Phaedra have a donkey booty face off!

After ESPN commentator Brent Musburger’s comment about the Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron’s girlfriend. Katherine Webb feels he did not need to apologize after the 73 year old was forced to by ESPN.

Musburger comments refered to Miss Alabama as, arguably most women would admire, ‘beautiful.’ On the Today Show, Webb said she was not offended and even went on to say that the media over did the incident. Musburger also went to say how Quarterbacks get all the good looking females and boys should practice football now with their dads in the backyards.

Is this acceptable? Was Musburger’s comments out of line? or was he just pointing out the obvious? According to an article about the controversy, Webb is going to be featured in the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

The controversy over the subject matter seems small, but would Webb or any other beauty contestant be asked to be featured in a Sports Illustrated Issue had national attention forced her into the spotlight?

Or does this take away from the main story: Alabama Rolltide Over Notre Dame?

This was not a bad thing, but there is a limit on how much to say. Pointing out ‘Oh look A.J.’s girlfriend is beautiful.” *Cut to next play* Is different than “OOOOHHHH weeee!! WOW! There’s go A.J.’s girlfriend.” *daps sweat off forehead* She is SMMMOOOOOKING!!” (exaggerated for emphasis).

The internet was all over this story when it broke even up-ing Katherine’s Twitter followers .

All in all, it was a good day for a number you parties; Alabama, A.J., Katherine Webb, the Miss USA Organization and (of course) Brent Musburger.

Have you ever wondered to yourself “I wish I could view not one, not two, but SEVEN examples of sexism, sizeism, racism, and self-loathing, all in one easy-to-swallow sitting!”. Well my friend, you are in luck, as Miss America 2013 is here! Down below you will find a few key points of everyday injustice, amplified by this year’s pageant, guaranteed to get your panties in a bunch!

Obsession with appearance: I probably don’t need to say much about this aspect, but let’s just be honest to get it out of the way. There are no overweight women in the competition. There are really no average-weight or average-looking women in the competition. There is no one competing that hasn’t drastically altered their appearance to get to the top, be it through makeup, plastic surgery, fake tans, or even fake teeth. Major points are given simply on how the women look in different clothing (or lack thereof). This competition is about appearance. It may include other factors like the talent or interview segments, but the message is plain and clear: While minor nuances of beauty may not be the final determining factor, you won’t even get a chance without it.

Body image: During the pageant, the swimsuit competition is described as a test of the candidates’ dedication to health, fitness, and confidence. But in reality, it’s confidence only while you look like the ideal of what a woman should look like… and health, even if it means potentially dangerous plastic surgery to look “healthy”… and fitness, as long as you’re thin, and actual muscle tone and definition are not really necessary. Many of the women mentioned in the pre-show interviews that they were hungry and that they held back on eating quite a bit before the competition. Afterwards, the losing Miss America candidates were given donuts, partly as a jab at the fact they’ve been starving themselves before the competition. Nothing screams the “health” they promote like starving and then eating donuts. Oh wait, no, that’s bulimia. Ha ha! I get it! So funny! Oh Miss America pageant, you get me every time!

Race: I don’t want to get myself in a conundrum by guessing the race or ethnicity of specific contestants, but as you can see below…

‘Nuf said.

Tiptoeing the virgin/whore dichotomy: In the pre-show, one of the heads of the Miss America pageant defined the how just about any woman could have a shot at becoming Miss America. Amongst his already narrow appearance requirements of “anyone” (which were being “thin” and “pretty”), he also stated that Miss America can never been married, pregnant, or have any criminal record. Criminal record… ok, I don’t expect a competition like Miss America to be as open-minded to accept that everyone make mistakes (or that there are sometimes very reasonable and sometimes honorable reasons to disobey the law), but marriage and motherhood? The explanation is that to be married or be a mother, the Miss America competitor would have had to… do the deed (gasp!). And we can’t have them openly admitting that. One of the candidates also stated that Miss America is more like “classy” than “sexy”, while another explained that Miss America is a different type of sexy than, say, Victoria Secret, because Miss America is about “character” and “poise” (because Miss America contestants model tiny bits of cloth labelled “swimwear” in front of millions of people, while Victoria Secret models tiny bits of cloth called “lingerie”, which makes them entirely different and makes Miss America more respectable than Victoria Secret. Got it.). Oh the balancing act. I must hand it to the women, it takes an awful lot of work to make sure you are sexy, but not dare to be sexual… or too sexy for someone else’s liking… or call your underwear the wrong thing (like my bra? I mean, BIKINI TOP! BIKINI TOP! I promise it’s a bikini top! I’m not slutty I’m classy!!!)

Victoria Secret Fashion Show

Miss America Swimsuit Competition

ss

ss

ss

ss

Totally different

ss

ss

ss

aa

Love to hate: While we may ooo and ahh at the beauty (and, occasionally, yes, the talents) of these young women, it is typical sexism to want to believe that a woman can never “have it all”. If you are too sexy, you’re probably slutty; if you’re too strong, you’re unattractive; and yes, the winner of them all… if you’re too pretty, you’re probably dumb. The airhead beauty queen is a treasured stereotype that we love to hate, and the Miss America pageant loves to give us what we want. From this year’s feature of Miss California confusing the term “euthanasia” with a vaccine to former Miss Teen USA South Carolina’s stumble over an incomprehensible answer, it’s assured that even as we admire these women, we will take a bit of satisfaction to still look down on them and take them down a notch.

Pseudo female empowerment: Similar to Sarah Palin calling herself a feminist, the Miss America pageant loves to tout female empowerment through oppression. One of the candidates mentioned how Miss America now embodies the “modern woman”, one who could be a leader in the business world, or even the next president of the US. Given that programs like Miss America consistently push for girls to spend their time and resources on self-objectification to look pretty (because, remember, it is the most important quality), I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.

Mainstream sexism: Of course, women should be able to do what they want, and if they really want to get in this type of competition, that’s their prerogative. However, like the Victoria Secret fashion show, this is hosted on a major, free network and the announcer directly suggests to YOUNG WOMEN that they can go online to find out how they could try to become Miss America. Unfortunately, Miss America and beauty pageants in general are not a small, off-the-wall hobby that only the dedicated will frequently find and be exposed to. Like so many other negative, image-focused, sexist messages young women are exposed to, it’s readily available and in your face.

So there you have it. Seven key embodiments of the need for feminism, all wrapped up in a 2 hour special. We’ve got some work to do.

But, for one little ray of sunshine, Miss Montana became the first autistic competitor. Though I’m obviously not fond of this competition, kudos to her and the competition for at least broadening their diversity in the realm of disabilities.

Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo is twenty years old. She’s conventionally beautiful and highly musically talented, and now, she’s (according to the Miss Universe pageant) the world’s most beautiful woman.

I’m twenty years old as well. I’m a few inches shorter than the average woman. I’ve worn glasses since the third grade, and they’ve become a part of who I am. I’m intelligent, law school bound (hopefully) and have been told I have a cute smile. I’ve even rocked some fancy gowns and sky-high heels without a problem. But frankly, I wasn’t born looking like a Barbie doll. I’d say I’m moderately pretty, but not jaw-dropping hot-damn bombshell gorgeous. I joke around sometimes that I’m at the perfect age to start getting into some pageants, but let’s be real, a girl like me wouldn’t make it beside all those suntanned, leggy blondes who’ve been taking ballet lessons since they could crawl.

Is it time I hang up my dream of being a princess?

I know I’ll never wear a Miss USA sash or have Donald Trump balance a jeweled tiara on my head–though, okay, missing out on Donald Trump isn’t a concern whatsoever. But, here’s the thing: people say you should never give up on your dreams. What do we do when those dreams are actually, truly impossible to reach? And is it right for a girl to cling blindly and desperately to that dream, or is it better to let it go?

The fact that I’ll never be a pageant queen isn’t killing me, per se. But it does make me wonder if there will ever be other dreams that I’ll have to stop believing in, other figurative tiaras and sashes that will have to be hidden in the back of a closet, to be forgotten forever. It’s a little frightening to think about.

In line with MSN.com, Randall Tyree with 101.five Jamz in Phoenix captured the tweet. So did Rachel Baribeau, a sports activities radio display host with 92.9 “The Game” in Birmingham.
