COLORADO SPRINGS – A Colorado Springs church is joining forces with an international organization to bring attention to the problem of child sex trafficking. The partnership was announced Sunday at the City Auditorium.

“These children are being sold and they’re being beaten, and they’re being raped and they’re locked in rooms for years without seeing the light of the sun,” said Clayton Ross, Pastor of Grass Roots Church.

  The statistics are surprising.

“One in three people between the ages of 10 to 13 are going to get sold to sex slavery once they’ve run away from home or they get kicked out of their house,” said Marcus Reid, who attended Thursday’s gathering.

Now, Grass Roots Church is joining forces with an organization called Love 146, to raise awareness and prevent child sex trafficking. “So it was kind of awesome to see two organizations come together and just talk about how we can work together,” said Reid.

Love 146 is an organization with one goal: to end child sex trafficking. The group has established safe houses all over the world for children who have been rescued from prostitution.

Grass Roots Church is also supporting the cause with monetary donations. “As a church body we’re giving ten percent of everything that comes through our doors for them,” said Pastor Ross. “And beyond that, we just want to raise awareness. If it was our son or daughter, we would raise the banner and put up fliers, and would go all out. We would get on the news. We would make things happen. We would make sure that every person knew that our child is missing.”

To get the word out, the unified group will participate in the Parade of Lights on December 5, 2009. They are also working on organizing some concerts that will take place at the City Auditorium next year.

FAYETTEVILLE — An overflow crowd of more than 2,000 people attended services for a 5-year-old North Carolina girl found dead nearly a week after she was reported missing.

Shaniya Davis’s father on Sunday urged the crowd to help the community’s needy.

Bradley Lockhart said that God has spoken to the gathering through a tragedy.

More than 1,500 people crowded into Manna Church and an additional 500 people watched the service from an adjacent building. Several hundred more waited outside.

White doves were released during a graveside service.

The girl’s mother is charged with trafficking her daughter and child abuse involving prostitution.

A Fayetteville man is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree rape of a child.

This is in part based on some feedback we’ve received from the DTES community at large.

The time commitment is roughly 1-1.5hr min: from 0730 to 0900 and 1130 to 1300 and will involve canvassing specific areas. Ideally we would like to have 3-4 people cover each time slot, everyday for a week.

Have you seen these dogs? We are desperately trying to bring them home. We have been out searching for them on foot day and night, walking the woods and the trails, following every lead and phone call, putting signs up everywhere and living on little if any sleep. We’ve even hired professional dog trackers to help us. Shane and Timber have been missing quite some time now, and we’re praying that some kind Samaritan has found them and is taking care of them.

Do you have have them in your care? Please, if you find them or any other dog that might be lost or abandoned, take them to any vet and ask the vet’s staff to check them for a microchip if they do not have a collar and tags on. We were separated on the Hastings Trail in Hastings on Hudson by the Rowley Bridge. Shane is a white Husky and German Shepherd mix with a blue right eye and a brown left eye. Timber is a rust and white/crème Husky with blue eyes. Both were wearing collars at the time and are microchipped. These two boys are very loved and deeply missed. We’re so worried about them, especially now that hunting season is beginning, and they could still be in the woods. If you have seen them or have seen anyone with dogs that look like them, please call anytime day or night.

They are friendly but might be very cautious and timid, so approach them slowly, please do not chase them. If they are roaming they can travel far and quickly. So please, we need your help to bring them home. Shane and Timber are loved and cherished, and our hearts are broken and our lives empty without them.

2009 Listen.to.it.

No, I am not drunk, that’s the name of a superb label I just discovered. They probably came up with it when they were drunk. Try googling it! Yikes.

House Wave Vol. 1 is their latest collection on Trackitdown and features several standout tracks including Gimme Fantasy by Italian DJ Gianni Coletti and Suspicious by Stephen Claude, among others. The Electro Of The Week, however, is a cover of the Everything But The Girl hit Missing, this time inexplicably titled To Get. The name of the artist? H.M.L.

H.M.L? Seriously, this anonymity thing is cool, but that sounds like the name of a shoe store. The track is fantastic though, and I especially appreciate the fact that the singer and producer decided not to go for the cliched ‘Dance Diva’ vocal (she sounds fantastic, and the accent ain’t bad at all). Musical, driving and emotional, this would be a winner on any night. It’s a vibrant update to a classic tune and comes highly recommended.

nbsp;

O.K. So I have been informed that H.M.L. stands for ‘House Music Lovers’. Much better!

The first two steps in getting certified in scuba diving is to make sure that you are a reasonably p

The first two steps in getting certified in scuba diving is to make sure that you are a reasonably proficient swimmer and you get medical clearance from your doctor to take up the sport. As for the swimming, you don’t have to master every type of stroke. Scuba certification only requires that you are able to swim about 200 yards using any stroke you want and to be able to float or tread on water for about 10 minutes. If you are in good general health and are comfortable in the water, then you should be able to scuba dive without any problems.

There are about 1,900 professional scuba dive centers in North America alone and your local ones should definitely be checked out. Most will run basic certification programs on a regular basis. These centers or shops should be listed in the yellow pages and you can also check with websites of some of the major scuba diving certification agencies such as PADI or NAUI as they will also have listings. Sometimes scuba diving courses are offered at universities too.

Make sure that the course you are interested in taking as well as its instructor are certified with one of the major scuba diving training agencies. This will ensure that you get proper, safe training for both the technical background knowledge and practical skills required for certification as a scuba diver. You also want to end up with an internationally recognized certification card if you want to go scuba diving at various locations around the world.

Some vacation resorts offer ‘resort’ courses lasting a day or two which offer beginners some very basic training in order to try out scuba diving. These are not certification programs. Full certification programs involve classroom work, exams, practical skills sessions at a pool and usually about four open water dives in the sea (lake or ocean). The duration of the classroom work and pool sessions vary from a very intensive weekend (with advance reading) to once a week over several weeks. The open water dives will usually take two more days. Dive centers located in the tropics also offer basic certification programs that last several days to a week. Although the intensive weekend programs are quite feasible, many feel that basic scuba diving courses spread out over a few weeks will help beginners learn the skills better. Scuba diving does involve new skills and to learn them all during one full weekend may be too much for some people.

As for which scuba diving certification training agency is the best, there isn’t any one recognized organization that is better than another. PADI is the most popular in the world but not necessarily better than NAUI or SSI. NAUI course are often more technical in the classroom than those offered by PADI but both will adequately train you to be a scuba diver. The more important factor would be the individual instructor and your own effort during training/studying. In fact, many scuba diving instructors have certifications from several training agencies.

For people living in the more northern regions, there are a few possible routes to take in order to obtain certification. One can travel down south to the tropics and do the entire basic certification course down there in warm weather. However, this will take up a good portion of a vacation since reading, classroom, pool sessions and open water dives all must be done during that time period. A second option is to take the entire course including the open water dives back in home territory. This usually offers beginners the most time since courses can be spread out over a few weeks. However, the water up north is not as warm as in the tropics and the scuba diving could be seasonal. A third option is to take all the classroom and pool sessions back home and then go down south to do the open water dives in warm waters. Many people have taken this route. Your instructor back home will give you a referral letter to bring down to an instructor located down south who will oversee your open water dives. This is a good combination of taking ample time back home to practice the skills in the pool plus getting the classroom work out of the way followed by having nice warm water to dive in for the open water dives. One thing to be aware of if considering this option is to make sure that your travel to the tropics for your open water dives is not too delayed after finishing up with your pool sessions at home. If too much time has elapsed, one could easily forget the skills learned in the pool by the time a vacation comes along.

The underwater world has so much to offer and only a small percentage of the world’s population will ever have the privilege to see it in person rather than on television. Become one of these individuals who will have the honor of exploring the oceans by getting certified in scuba diving.

Talk of trendy watches brings to one’s attention the name of Mido. This fine quality watch is still one favored by watch wearers today. Mido has been known for a long time as a good quality fashionable watch. It remains one of the premier watchmakers still to this day.

Mido started in the industry in the early 1900s, when the company was started on November 11, 1918 by George G. Schaeren in Biel, Switzerland. The name Mido in latin that means measuring which is a fitting name for a device that measures time.

Over the next few decades that passed the company sought to prove that it was a good watch producer of high quality. The watch was produced even before citizen and produced many cutting edge innovations for the industry before Citizen even started making watches.

Mido introduced the Multifort model in the mid thirties. This was the very first watch to feature self propelled or automatic movements. The invention of this watch started the watch industry as it is today. The watch also was shock resistant, water resistant and anti magnetic which were all new innovations that had not been previously in the industry. Mido met another point when it produced unbreakable springs, which was also a first for the market to see. With so many new inventions no wonder why this watch company was in the front all these years. Mido’s first watch was still being sold as a hit in the 60s.

Mido brought a model called the “Commander” in 1959. This was a single shelled watch and represented another first for the company as well. This single shell construction made its life a lot longer than most other watches and was another revolution in the industry of watch making. The Commander is still popular it to this day and is still among one of the most popular today.

In 1970 the Aquadura Crown Sealing system was brought to the market by the company, an invention that made Mido a leader, if not the leader in water resistant watches. The Aquadura crown sealing system uses a cork that seals the watches and doesn’t get water in the chambers of the time pieces and causes them to work for a longer period of time. Today the Mido brand is a division of Swatch and is still leading in watch production and will still go on to be of great service to watch buyers throughout future decades.

I wanted a girl first.

You don’t hear that too often from a father; you certainly don’t hear a preference these days. It’s much safer to say you want a healthy baby, which I certainly prayed for, though my wife knew I anxiously went into the first sonogram hoping for the missing male member.

It had little to do with my dad’s way of showing his sons affection; he wrestled with us from time to time and got a big kick out of it in the process. But he did love his girls – it was just easier for him to show them, and I can understand that. It was that relationship between him and my sisters that I wanted for myself. Of course, I was more than aware that my heart would be severely tested, if not broken, in the process, but what could be better than the feeling itself – than to have not felt it at all?

The “watch what you wish for” idiom was never lost on me, especially after I secretly hoped for a boy in the second pregnancy, and got that, too. But nothing could have prepared me for one evening, that at least to this day, ranks as the worst moment in my entire life.

It was a normal drive home, as mechanical as any other day when I left work, picked up my infant son at daycare, and headed for the house. He was beginning to know turns, I thought, but his excitement peaked whenever we arrived at the driveway. The garage door was open, which it sometimes was when my wife expected me at a certain time, so I carried the boy through the garage, opening the back door with my free hand.

My wife’s immediate question was frantic, just shy of a scream.

“Do you have Kate?”

“No,” I said, walking through the kitchen to find her. But she was moving quickly, leaving the front door open as she shouted her name in the yard.

“Kate! Kate!”

I still had Ryan in my left arm when I met her outside. “What—

“I can’t find her. She’s not in the house.” Tears streamed down her face. “I think someone took her from the playroom – look, the screen is off.”

I hadn’t even noticed it when I got to the driveway, but it was hardly visible until you were next to the front bushes, staring at the open window, where the screen now dangled.

“What do you mean – took her?” I asked.

“I called for her and didn’t get an answer – then I saw the window, and I’ve looked in every room in the house.” She didn’t wait for reply, running down the street and knocking on each neighbor’s door.

It was surreal, but only for a moment, knowing I had to get the phone. Logically, I knew my wife was not the one that should be running down the street. I could cover more ground in a shorter span of time, and for a split-second, I thought of setting the boy down on the carpet and doing just that. But without knowing what was happening and if there could be someone in the house, my son wasn’t leaving my arm.

With him still attached to me, I brought the phone out to the front yard, dialed 911, and watched my wife’s progress. My heart was beating out of my chest as I heard the operator’s voice, and when the automatic question was asked, I knew I wasn’t prepared. No one is.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

“Um,” my voice quivered as I tried to continue. “I can’t find my daughter. I think she’s…been taken.”

“Ok, sir…how old is she?”

“She’s five,” I muttered, as a few neighbors gathered at my driveway.

As each question came, I answered, with my eyes panoramically taking in the neighborhood, and my mind spinning out of control. And when it dawned on me that the unspeakable might have happened, my soul completely left me. It is difficult to describe to this day. In the span of one minute, my heart had left emptiness for something far darker…I didn’t want to live.

“The police are on their way,” the voice said, as my wife arrived back at the driveway sobbing, immediately comforted by the neighbors.

I do remember that a tiny part of me knew I should be more responsible – that I should do something – but I was as oblivious as the child still clinging to my arm. And a grief I hoped would never consume my wife only magnified my own. I looked down the street through flooded eyes, certain that my girl was now in some car on the way to tragedy.

Until my wife screamed again.

“Kate!”

I turned toward the front door, and there she was, immobile and frightened. In seconds, the most horrible five minutes of my life had become the finest, as my daughter now ran to my wife’s outstretched arms. Both sobbing, they sat in a tight embrace on the grass, and I heard a tiny voice from the phone, which I now remembered I was holding.

“Hello?” I said, my hand still shaking. “Yes, we found her. I’m so sorry for the trouble.”

“Not at all,” the operator said. “I’m glad. Is there anything else we can do?”

“No…thank you very much.”

The details, of course, are now just that. A little girl is watching a cartoon, stands up to look out the window, and leans a bit too hard on the screen, which pops out on to the front brush. She has no experience with such an error, believing the penalty to be far worse than that for simply spilling juice or jumping from the back of the couch. Mommy’s reminders to keep the sippy cup’s lid attached, or that we don’t jump from the furniture are slaps on the wrist compared to this criminal act. So she runs to hide in the guest room, between the side of the bed and the wall – a strategically superb move – which cannot easily be accessed by an adult. (Certainly not a frantic one.)

She’s not truly cognizant of the punishment that faces her until Mommy screams her name about the house, and the fact that she seems to be looking in every room confirms that breaking the window screen is the most heinous thing the eldest has ever done. Still, she waits, as Mommy’s voice trails and then becomes louder…on the other side of the wall…outside!

For a while, she measures her next move, until she peers through the guest room window and sees the townspeople with torches on the driveway. “It’s so bad, Mommy has collected reinforcements,” she thinks. Finally giving in to remorse, she trudges down the hall, and stands in the front doorway…hoping for leniency. But Mommy welcomes her, and the prodigal daughter realizes that the window screen is, indeed, on par with cranberry juice spots on the carpet.

Later that night, my wife and I swapped stories about the evening over a glass of wine. We knew that Kate’s point of view in this whole mess was a humorous story, but for a much later time. Things were simply too fresh. That she was missing at all – even for what amounted to ten minutes – still brought tears to our eyes. Today’s world will do that to you.

Then the timer went off, and my wife pulled a thin crust pizza from the oven. She was going to put a few pieces on a plate and place it front of Kate as she watched a cartoon in the playroom, but that night was different. It was hardly a fatted calf, but I had little problem bringing the entire pizza in the playroom and kissing the top of her head, checking to see that the window was now locked as I walked away.

I wanted a girl first.

I came up with an eight step system for individuals looking for a long and lasting relationship. After much personal experience, observation and research, I have discovered these steps provide a greater chance for a lifelong partner versus just a one night stand. These steps are not ingrained in stone and there are certainly rare and wonderful cases where a one night stand can turn into a successful marriage. However to increase your chances, I have determined these steps provide the proper criteria and mind set for marriage.

Building Blocks for a Successful Relationship from Meeting to Marriage

First Three to Six Months

1. Meet

Encounter at work, school, gym, grocery store, running/ walking club, art/ writing class, workshop, or any personal interest group.

2. Establish a Friendship

Treat each other as buddies. No pressure for sex and truly get to know the person without expectations for the future or external demands. In this type of relationship, you are permitted to be yourself and learn each other’s character, values and beliefs.

3. Set Boundaries and Stand-up for your principles and viewpoint

Be willing to end the relationship if they aren’t met. You may be surprised how the relationship turns for the better after someone takes a stance if there is something special brewing between the two of you.

Six to Nine Months

4. Continue to build boundaries; working on polite yet assertive communication.

5. Respect

Respect naturally forms if there is admiration and deference toward each other. Appreciate signs of mutual respect such as thoughtfulness, consideration, politeness and respect of privacy. Small considerate actions mean the most.

Nine Months to a Year

6. Love is revealed

Revel in your love, tender affection and romantic desires and longing for each other.

Year to Two Years

7. Persevere the relationship

Steadily persist in consistent thoughtful actions toward each other despite problems or difficulties if they exist.

8. Marriage

Make a 100% Commitment. Be willing to work and give the relationship hundred percent; through thick and thin; the good and the bad times. During difficult times, look for the positives and enjoy your spouse more each day. You may be pleasantly surprised how your spouse responds; naturally reacting nicer. An amazing transformation will eventually occur, illuminating happier times together.

There is a remarkable difference between a commitment of 99% and 100%. At 100%, you are seeing your problems all the way through to their solutions. At 99% we can still find a way to take the path of least resistance…and usually do.

I got the inspiration for this post today from Booshy’s blog today, if you have not read, I suggest you do. I have been meaning to discuss my closet/clothes issues for some time now. It is something that I have always wondered about, and I want to know if others have similar issues, or if it is just another special quirk that I have.

For as long as I can remember, I have had articles of clothing, usually a favorite of mine, disappear. Over the years, I have lost, genuinely lost three pairs of jeans, a couple of dresses, several lovely pencil skirts (including a “mermaid” one that had a really precious pleated smaller panel in the back to give it some flair), and countless shirts. I only notice that something is missing when I go into my closet to put it on, and can’t find it. I tear my closet apart, throw out every article of clothing in search of the missing item, can’t find it to save my life, empty all my drawers, raid my sister’s room (when we were both still living at home together), run all over the house bitching about the fact that I can’t find my clothes. Sometimes, if I am lucky, the missing item will “magically” reappear months later.

I have always blamed this on my sister. I decide that she takes the clothes, and those which she decides she doesn’t want to wear anymore or those articles that I seem to bitch the most about “losing” she just puts back into my closet. While this would work for some of the clothes lost, it doesn’t work for the more recent ones. My sister and I are not the same size at all. We are build very differently, and do not wear the same size of clothes at all. So it would be pointless for her to take my clothes. Secondly, this has happened in all of my closest. In the my closet growing up, in the dorms, in my apartments, and now in my new apartment’s closet. I remember packing up my clothes, and I specifically remember folding some of my sweaters and putting them in the boxes. But when it got cold, I went to go get a particular sweater, and it was nowhere to be seen or found. I emptied out my closet, my drawers, and I still could not find it. I remember bringing it with me, but now it is missing.I lost one of my favorite slouchy boots for two weeks! Who loses just one boot?! It later reappearing my laundry basket, which was used several days prior to the boot reappearance. And it was at that time empty of everything including the boot.

I have concluded that I have a mini black hole that follows me around and usually settles somewhere in my closet, hidden from view. It selectively sucks out my favorite clothes, and transports them to an alternate universe. There, aliens that are lucky enough to be able to wear my clothes parade around wearing them. Sometimes they are not as fond of the article as I am, and they throw it back into the black hole where it eventually makes its way back to me. This is the only plausible explanation I have been able to come up with to account for my missing clothes. I think that my closet black hole is closely related to the one that is in all dryers. You know, the one that is to blame for only getting out half of the number of socks that you put into it.

Does anyone have any experience with these closet black holes? Or is this just something that I struggle with personally? If anyone has any suggestions on how to defeat this black hole, please share!

Poppy, who went missing outside the Dogs Trust in West Calder

By Cara Sulieman

A GREYHOUND has made a mad dash for freedom as she was being moved to a re-homing centre.

Poppy had been looked after by a local charity for the last three months and was on her way to the Dogs Trust re-homing centre in West Calder when she slipped out of her harness and ran away.

And now Lois Sinclair – who rescued the two-year-old pooch – is desperate to find her and help her get the happy home she deserves.

As the black greyhound is frightened of people, the charities are asking for people to call in any sightings of the pup rather than try and catch her themselves.

“Sweet but nervous”

Lois is so determined to find the ex-racing dog that she said she will go out any time of day or night to track her down.

She said: “Poppy is a very sweet little dog but nervous, especially with men.

“Although she’s nervous she trusts me and I think I am the only person she will answer to, which is why I will go out any time of day or night and try to find her if we get a sighting.”

The pooch escaped as she was being taken towards the reception of the Dogs Trust building in West Calder last Monday, and has been out in the howling winds and lashing rain ever since.

“Terrified”

Despite two sightings near Livingston and search parties going out every day, there is still no sign of the canine.

The pooch was brought to Lois after being a racing greyhound, but she doesn’t know what has caused the dog to be so nervous.

Lois said: “Poppy had been a racing greyhound she wasn’t racing anymore so she was brought to me three months ago.

“She is terrified of men so people shouldn’t approach her.

“You just don’t know what has happened to them before they come here. I don’t go choosing the dogs – I will take any dog and deal with any problems they have.

“Moving Poppy to the Dogs Trust was a chance to get some help with her behaviour to try and make her less nervous.”

“Keep eyes peeled”

Staff from the Dogs Trust have also been out searching for the dog, and are keen to find her so they can start helping Poppy with her behavioural problems.

Susan Tonner, manager at the West Calder re-homing centre, said: “Poppy is terrified of strangers, particularly men, so is likely to be hiding in a secluded spot without access to water or food.

“As she’s so scared of people we think she will stay away from built up areas, but we’re asking the public to keep their eyes peeled and check their outhouses and sheds for her.

“She is black but has white paws and a white ‘bib’ on her chest.”

Any sightings of Poppy should be reported to Dogs Trust on 01506 873459 or Lois Sinclair at Gracehounds on 07989 963556.

On Sunday afternoon in a Fayetteville, North Carolina church, Manna Church, the world, family and friends said goodbye to Shaniya Davis. Shaniya had captured the heart of the world, after it was discovered that her own mother had sold her into bondage as a sex slave,to Mario McNeill, who brutally raped and murdered the little child.

More than 2000 people were inside the church to support Bradley Lockhart, Shaniyas dad, and the man who made the decision to send Shaniya back to her mother, after having raised the child for the full 5 years of her life, which directly led to her death.

“Don’t let God’s words and don’t let his actions get you down,” Lockhart told the packed congregation. “He did this for a reason.”

Shaniya Davis funeral was open to the public and was standing room only.Lockhart urged the 1,500 crowded into Manna Church and another 500 watching the service from an adjacent building to help the community’s needy, according to press reports.

As mourners filled the church, a photo display of Shaniya Davis was streamed on the overhead projector. Never before released photos of Shaniya were displayed. These photos showed Shaniya with her father, Bradley Lockhart and her siblings.

Lockhart said, “Shaniya, Daddy love you honey. And I know you’re gonna’ be waiting for me … I’ll see you when I get there.”

White doves were released at her graveside as the little child Shaniya was laid to her eternal resting place.

It has been two weeks to the day since Pierre went missing.

Hundreds of volunteers; family, friends, friends of friends and even strangers have taken to the parks, waterways and streets to help find Pierre. You have all been unwavering in your commitment and support and I wanted to thank you all and express my utmost gratitude.

To all the volunteers who turned out today to search the Downtown Eastside. We will be following up on some of the sightings mentioned in this area and will be posting information shortly of a more concentrated search.
