Russ Carnahan, is getting $90 million dollars of the stimulus package that Russ voted for – and it’s not creating a single job in Carnahan’s 3rd District.

Wind Capital Group, led by President Tom Carnahan, said Monday it has closed on financing for Missouri’s largest wind energy development.

The lenders, led by Nord/LB,Bayern LB, Rabobank,Santander and Union Bank, are providing $240 million in debt facilities to support the construction and operation of the proposed Lost Creek Wind Project in DeKalb County, Mo. The debt facilities consist of a construction loan, term loan and letter of credit.

The project also is seeking $90 million in aid through the federal stimulus package.

The project, which is expected to cost more than $300 million and create more than 2,500 jobs, is believed to be the largest investment by the private sector in the state of Missouri this year, Wind Capital said.

It’s a shame that such an impractical (not to mention unsightly) market must rely on taxpayer financing in order to compete in the marketplace, as opposed to allowing the market to dictate its own trajectory. But then again, that’s the government nanny state for you.

Get acquainted with the myths of wind energy:

Electricity only is generated when the wind blows. Moreover, turbines are designed to operate in a range of relatively narrow wind speeds. Unless the tower is in an ideal wind area, the turbine will provide power only about 25-30 percent of the time.

Also

Another way to look at the practical problem of locating wind turbines is given in a Department of Energy report from last May. It concluded that to produce enough wind power to satisfy only 20 percent of U.S. demand (less than half of what coal plants fulfill) would require land-based turbines and related infrastructure that would take up an area “slightly less than the area of Rhode Island.”

And this brilliant article:

Hydrocarbon fuels built modern America, gave us the technologies and living standards we enjoy today, helped us eradicate diseases that plagued earlier generations, and boosted US life expectancy from 50 in 1900 to nearly 80 today. They still provide 85% of our total energy, and we could greatly reduce our reliance on oil imports if we would simply end the outrageous policies that keep our nation’s abundant energy resources locked up.

We have enough oil, natural gas, oil shale, coal and uranium to provide power for centuries. We have a growing consensus that we need to drill, onshore and off. But partisan intransigence and ridiculous environmental claims prevent us from utilizing these American resources.

Wind contributes more every year to our energy mix. But it still provides only 1% of our electricity – compared to 49% for coal, 22% for natural gas, 19% for nuclear and 7% for hydroelectric. Moreover, we will need 135 gigawatts of new electricity generation by 2020, whereas only 57 GW are planned.

We can and should harness the wind. But 22% by 2020 is far-fetched.

Wind power is expensive (even with subsidies), intermittent and unreliable. Many turbines are 400 feet tall and carry 130-foot, 7-ton, bird-slicing blades. They operate at only 20-30% of rated capacity – compared to 85% for coal, gas and nuclear plants – and provide little power during summer daytime hours, when air-conditioning demand is highest, but winds are at low ebb.

[...]

uilding and installing these turbines requires 5 to 10 times more steel and concrete than is needed to build far more reliable nuclear plants to generate the same amount of electricity, says Berkeley engineer Per Peterson. Add in steel and cement needed to build transmission lines from distant wind farms to urban consumers, and the costs multiply.

It also means many more quarries, mines, cement plants and steel mills to supply those materials. But radical greens oppose such facilities.

[...]

Since adequate wind is available only 3-8 hours a day, we would also need expensive gas-fired generating plants that mostly run at idle, kicking in whenever the wind dies down. That means still more money, cement and steel – and still higher electricity prices.

If wind power was so great, Teddy Kennedy wouldn’t have opposed the construction of a wind farm that would have compromised his view in Hyannis Port.

As a constituent of the third district, I’m furious that Carnahan would vote to support to add to the deficit for the sake of his own family’s bottom line – a vote that’s piddling away $90 million and doesn’t create a single job in our district.

24thstate also reports: Carnahan Family Gets Big Windfall :

Here’s what they don’t tell you. Without the stimulus or other government funds building new power lines, this project is a dead end. Russ Carnahan voted for the stimulus.

To date it has been a success, but, for this state, all the potential sites with enough wind to be useful are up in the Rockport area. The company was able to tie into existing distribution lines to use the power it generated, but getting much power further into the state will require that new power lines be run, and there are a number of different forms of cost and delay in getting that accomplished. He did note the potential of the stimulus package to help.

His plane went crashed on the north side of the airport, near the FedEx facility. On board and piloting the plane was businessman Emmett O’Ryan, his daughter Ruth, his son Robert, and Robert’s friend Patrick Jenning. Emmett died from the injuries. His daughter and Jenning are listed in fair condition at The MED. Robert O’Ryan has been released from the hospital.

O’Ryan was flying home from a family Thanksgiving holiday at The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.V., where O’Ryan, an avid golfer, owned a home. The National Transportation Safety Board has determined there were no mechanical problems on the plane.

This is a recap for a trip I took to Kansas City in late August 2007. – I have now had my hair

This is a recap for a trip I took to Kansas City in late August 2007.
–
I have now had my hair cut in my 24th state. Friday afternoon I had my hair cut at Doug’s Barber Shop in Independence, Missouri. I took a long weekend to Kansas City – saw the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Truman Library and Museum, the Missouri State Capitol, and a Kansas City Royals game. So, Missouri is now the 24th state in which I’ve had a haircut.

I didn’t go just for the haircut, I’ve wanted to see the Truman museums. I’ve wanted to see a Kansas City Royals game since I was last in KC 13 years ago. Now that I have seen the Royals, I have reached another baseball goal of mine – I have now seen all levels of organized professional baseball this season, each in a different state.

In my quest for historical euphemisms, I found this gem at the Missouri State Capitol on Sunday. If you remember from your American History classes, the Kansas-Nebraska Act enabled states to determine whether they entered the union as slave or free. Passed in 1854, it was the high-water mark of Stephen Douglas’ career. Let’s just say that Missourians stuffed the ballot box in favor of slavery, the votes were declared null and void, and then civil war ensued (Jayhawkers, Quantrill’s gang, John Brown, Frank and Jesse James, etc). Or in the historian’s words Missourians “chose to get involved by having public meetings and influencing elections in Kansas.” A bit understated, I might say…

When I told friends that I was entering the seminary many wondered what exactly that meant. Some wondered if seminary was at all like “regular college.” While there are some differences, the annual academic schedule is very similar, which means that last week we had Thanksgiving break.

Since my parents live in New Jersey, and that’s a bit of a drive (20+ hours), I decided to settle for the much more humane, 6 hour drive, and went to visit family up in Wisconsin. After a wonderful couple of days visiting with my aunts, uncles and cousins, I headed to Columbia.

My first night in Columbia was spent visiting with my godfather, which included a trip to one of (if not the) my favorite restaurants in Columbia. What restaurant is that you ask? Tony’s. I could eat their Gyros everyday. This fondness for Tony’s Gyros comes from my parents, my father grew up in Columbia, and my mother lived there for a few years after they got married. Both are big Tony’s fans.

Saturday was spent watching the Mizzou-KU football game. My best friend and roommate last year had been studying abroad this semester, but due to variations in seasons/schedules, was back in the United States, and came up to Columbia to watch the game.

It was a lot of fun to reconnect with a good friend and watch a decent football game with a great outcome, for those that were not aware, the TIGERS WON!

Sunday, I slept in, and then went to Mass in Spanish at Sacred Heart, it’s nice to see such a vibrant Spanish community in our diocese. For those wondering, I’m half Ecuadorian, so yes I know Spanish and fully understood what was going on…Then it was back to school where we now face three more weeks of classes and finals until Christmas Break.

Creeping in the heartland. A reader and left some comments for us recently regarding some activities that took place in the Kansas City area earlier this year. We covered it briefly in a post entitled Kansas City Muslims rally to support Hamas terrorists.

The reader, Joshua, compiled an explanatory video of his research earlier this year during the pro-Hamas and Hizbollah / anti-Israel protests that took place in cities across America. Including in Ft. Lauderdale where Muslims were chanting “nuke, nuke Israel” and “big ovens” are what you need. In addition to a litany of Muslim battle chants.

Much of this action takes place in liberal Lawrence, Kansas, home of University of Kansas. Rockchawk Jihad anyone?

Joshua explains ithings pretty well and has some fun with the potential jihadists-to-be. “To the sea” is another reference you hear in the video which basically means Muslims conquering Israel and forcing the Jews into the sea, but they will spin it differently.

Joshua also does what all of us should be doing – questioning Muslims. Watch the other videos he sent us. See them below the fold.

Porter, 37, said he will bring a passion and energy to the program that a former player should bring. The former Memphis running back was introduced to about 500 members of the Tiger fan base and former players on the school’s campus. Porter said. “I thank God and my family for allowing me the opportunity I’ve been given to come home and be the coach of this team,” “I thank President (Shirley) Raines and R.C. for trusting me enough to ask me to be the coach.” Porter replaces Tommy West, who was fired Nov. 9 after nine seasons. Porter inherits a program that went 2-10 this past season and will lose the better part of its offense to graduation including two of the quarterbacks that started this season (Arkelon Hall and Will Hudgens).

Porter ranks sixth in career rushing at Memphis with 2,194 yards, and scored 20 touchdowns from 1990-93. He later coached at Tennessee-Martin, Arkansas State and Oklahoma State before joining Les Miles at LSU, where Porter has coached running backs since 2005. Porter was named National Recruiter of the Year by Rivals.com in both 2007 and 2009. In ‘07, LSU finished with the nation’s No. 4 recruiting class and No. 2 in ‘09. LSU’s 2010 class is currently ranked No. 4. Porter’s wife, Sharmane, is also a Memphis graduate, and she said she was happy to be back in Memphis.

As LSU’s running backs coach, Porter has helped developed some of the finest players at that position in school history. In four years with the Tigers, LSU has produced a 1,000-yard rusher twice – Jacob Hester 1,103 yards in 2007 and Charles Scott 1,174 yards in 2008. In 2008, LSU again had one of the top running games in the SEC as the Tigers rushed for 166.8 yards per game with Scott getting the bulk of the carries (1,174 yards on 217 attempts). Scott, who earned first-team All-SEC in 2008, and Keiland Williams (417 yards, 2 TDs on 83 attempts) gave the Tigers one of the top 1-2 rushing punches in the league last year. Porter and the Tigers had a running back-by-committee approach during the national championship season in 2007 with Hester leading all rushers with a career-best 1,103 yards and 11 TDs. Hester, who was a second-team All-SEC selection, had four 100-yard rushing games, including a 120-yard effort against Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game. Following the 2007 season, Hester was picked in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. Hester became the fourth running back coached by Porter that has been selected among the first three rounds of the NFL Draft since 2004.

In 2006, Porter juggled running backs as the Tigers started four different players, including two true freshmen, at tailback. At Oklahoma State, Porter’s stable of running backs continued the tradition of “Tailback U.”, as he coached 1,000-yard rushers for three straight seasons. Porter spent three years at Arkansas State, where he coached Jonathan Adams to back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Adams rushed for 1,004 yards and six touchdowns in 2000 and followed that with another 1,004 yards and five scores in 2001. Under Porter’s tutelage, Adams capped his career as the second-leading rusher in Arkansas State history. Porter began his coaching career at Wooddale High School in Memphis, Tenn., serving as head track and field coach. After two years at Wooddale, Porter moved to the collegiate ranks, coaching the running backs at Tennessee-Martin in 1998. During his playing days, Porter was a four-year letterwinner at Memphis where he was co-captain of the 1993 Tiger squad. Porter capped his career as the fourth-leading rusher in Memphis history, totaling 2,194 yards and 20 touchdowns. Porter’s 2,194 rushing yards currently ranks No. 6 in Memphis history, while his 20 rushing TDs is fourth all-time at the school. In all, Porter led the Tigers in rushing yards for three years during his career.

As a rookie in 1990, Porter rushed for 206 yards against Arkansas State, the highest single-game total for a freshman in school history. Porter had a total of six 100-yard games during his career, a figure that ranks fourth in Memphis history. Porter graduated from Memphis in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in education. A native of Jackson, Miss., Porter and his wife Sharmane have three children, Brandon, Omari and Olivia.

Eight months after filing, Charter Communications Inc. said Monday it has emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy with $8 billion less debt. Judge James Peck in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York approved the pre-arranged financial restructuring Nov. 17, which was filed March 27 and considered one of the nation’s largest and most complex. Through the plan, Charter, the fourth-largest U.S. cable operator, will shave off $8 billion from the $21 billion debt it took on through acquisitions and service upgrades to compete with larger rivals. The company, which has 5.3 million customers and reported a loss every year since going public in 1999, said it expects to generate positive free cash flow through the reduction of more than $830 million in annual interest expense. Charter’s plan generates $1.6 billion in proceeds from an equity rights offering; reinstates $11.4 billion of its senior bank debt at below-market rates; and gives Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen the largest voting interest at 35 percent.

St. Louis, Missouri – Local station News Channel 5, KSDK in St. Louis reports a possible hate crime attack against three gay men early Saturday morning that left them cut and bruised, but alive. One of the three lucky survivors, Jacob Piwowarczyk said to reporters, “I have a soft tissue bruise on my elbow. I have six stitches in my eye and I have a mild concussion.” The two other victims suffered a broken nose and a fractured cheekbone. Piwowarczyk went on to describe the attack that took place outside a popular local nightclub, The Complex. Four men who had just left an adjacent bar to The Complex jumped out of their car and confronted Piwowarczyk and his two friends as they crossed the parking area. “They came up out of the car and they start calling us ‘Faggots,’” Piwowarczyk said, showing the press the injuries he sustained in the attack. ”We kept telling them please leave us alone, we’re fine,” young Piwowarczyk continued. “From there, the one kid didn’t like what we told them and decided to punch me in the eye and I fell to the ground. And at that time my friend was laying on the ground and they started kicking him in the face.” Club security were the first to respond, probably averting much worse injury to the three gay men. Then, police arrived at the scene. The attackers had fled, reportedly in a black SUV with Illinois plates. Missouri was one of the first states in the Union to include sexual orientation and gender identity protections for its citizens in 1999, according to Vital Voice, the leading LGBT newspaper in St. Louis. Authorities are searching for the suspects, and have yet to determine whether the attack qualifies as a hate crime under the Missouri statute or the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, recently enacted by Congress and signed into law by President Obama. If determined to be a hate crime, the suspects could face severe penalties. The outcome could have been much worse, according to Piwowarczyk. “Health-wise we’re all fine,” he said. “We’re just lucky to be alive.”

St. Louis County Prosecutors watered-down the charges in the Kenneth Gladney case from a misdemeanor

St. Louis County Prosecutors watered-down the charges in the Kenneth Gladney case from a misdemeanor to an ordinance violation without so much as even calling St. John’s Hospital, where Gladney received treatment for his injuries, and checking Gladney’s hospital record or speaking with care providers on site.

Elston McCowan and Perry Molens were witnessed on video assaulting Gladney who is seen being taken to the ground. Cheryl Johner punched Kelly Owens in the face – which Owens caught on camera, an assault witnessed by a police officer, according to the police report – and all three get off with nothing more that ordinance violations.

Owens beating recap:

It has been discovered that no one from Patricia Redington’s office ever accessed Gladney’s medical records for use in determining the charges filed in the case.

Not only did the prosecuting attorney’s office fail to immediately file charges after the assaults, but now it would seem that partiality is being shown as evidenced by the downsize in the severity of charges without even checking on the extent of Gladney’s injuries.

Remember that Patricia Redington’s office made sure to file charges against Bill Federer, on behalf of Dick Gephardt campaigner James Larrew (which were subsequently tossed) on the following day, which was a national holiday. Redington is said to not have actually interviewed any witnessed, either.

So:

No witnesses interviewed.

Medical record wasn’t accessed.

They must have a magic crystal ball because I don’t know how you can file charges without actually investigating the case.

Gladney beating recap:

Eggtc. is a popular place among our friends for brunch and thus worthy of a KC Bites review. We approached breakfast without bias, but with the wisdom to avoid the weekend crowds.

Being that the place if called EGG-tc., we decided to try out their eggs. I ordered the Eggs Benedict Florentine, because I love avocado, English muffins, and Hollandaise. How could I go wrong? Julia ordered the simple, but popular, Margarita Omelet with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil. To rev up my engine and feed my addition, I drank my Joe straight. Julia ordered the seasonal gingerbread latte from the coffee bar. Nom, nom!

The 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi expressed the vast scale of human endeavor. It focused on long, stationary shots of busy infrastructure, accompanied by the minimalist yet awe-inspiring music of composer Phillip Glass. The film is locally known in St. Louis because it features footage of the demolition of the maligned, failed Pruitt-Igoe public housing project. (Said footage starts around 2:50 in this YouTube video. It’s very near my old neighborhood, so much so that I see buildings I know in the background.)

Rolla, Missouri, resident Max Tohline has produced a parody about life in little Rolla, Missouri, called Rollaqatsi. It’s pretty funny. Check it out here.

I am kind of wondering what Hamtramckqatsi would entail, besides all the requisite images of production at the American Axle plant and other industrial sites in town. Shots of frantic Paczki Day donut production at New Palace, perhaps? A sped-up shot of the liquor bottles behind a bar getting lower and lower as a Saturday night progresses? Hmm….

(Thanks to Frippy for the tip on Rollaqatsi!)

(Above: Otsego Lake State Park – photographer unknown)

The Immutable Kingdom – Part 75

By Scott A. Klaft

The Church In Time Of War …continued

Prior to the horrifying battle at Pea Ridge, William Baxter, president of the once prosperous ‘brotherhood school’ in Fayetteville, Arkansas, took an associate with him to visit B. F. Hall, who was preaching in Texas at the time. This would be one of the more lamentable trips that Baxter would ever recall. Hall, once a grand proponent of the Restoration, had undergone a troubling change.

Hall was now, not only touting the southern cause, but also acting more of a fiend than a Christian gentleman. The historian, Earl West described Hall at the time of their visit as “[Riding] a fine mule, had a splendid rifle, and expressly requested of all friends that if a ‘Yankee’ appeared, please let him get his share.”[1]

During their conversation, Baxter noted that Hall spoke not a word about the church, the gospel, or any of the spiritual things one might expect from a preacher dealing with serious matters; but rather, he ranted about his rifle, and how many Yankees he hoped to kill. Having never met Hall before, Baxter’s associate was stunned at the vitriol with which he spoke about the North. This ‘chaplain’ for the Texas Rangers spoke admiringly of a friend who was going over a field after an intense battle; and, finding a wounded Federal soldier begging for medical help, ruthlessly shot him instead. Hall expressed his approval with laughter while telling the tale, thoroughly enjoying the cold-blooded conduct.

While the two visitors struggled to retain composure, Hall promoted the policy of catching every Yankee, cutting off their right hand, and sending them home with the severed hand tied to their saddle. When asked how he could feel such hatred toward the northern brethren, Hall snapped back that he had no brethren in the North; they were all infidels. On their way out, Baxter commented to his associate that he felt like they had been in the presence of a “highwayman” rather than a Christian.

As it is so often the case, men who boast of great things will be the ones who do the least. At the battle of Pea Ridge, Hall accompanied the Texas Rangers, and about the only action he participated in was running to the rear. The shattered lines of Confederate General M’Cullach sent his soldiers pouring through Fayetteville, returning south. Baxter and his associate were able to watch B. F. Hall in retreat looking exhausted and spent.

* * *

The passions of either side drove them to increasingly dark deeds, as the war continued. Andrew Allsman, though not exactly known for his faithfulness, was a member of the church in Palmyra, Missouri. Confederate General Porter had taken him and abruptly executed him without a warranted reason. The news came to the Union General McNeil, who decided ten Confederate prisoners must be shot in retaliation.

Jacob Creath Jr. spoke with the captured soldiers before execution. One or two were silent. Many others were weeping bitterly and begging for mercy. One tall, blond headed youth, was brave, but downhearted. His girl back home was anticipating his return that they might marry. Creath could do nothing to stop the proceedings, but he pleaded with them to have their hearts right with God. The next morning, a firing squad sent the ten men to their graves.

Pillage, rape and plunder followed in the wake of General Sherman as he led his Fourth Kentucky Regiment toward Atlanta. He was defeated outside Atlanta; among the few captured was J. B. Vawter, who would become, in later years, a well known preacher of the Restoration principles in Iowa. Unrestrained abuses of authority occurred throughout the states. Often we are reminded of the nobility of the great leaders in American History. We give them their due, but the violence of war tends to bring out the worst in those who have already given up the roots of morality in the Bible.

While some within the church managed to remain outside the fray, both literally and figuratively, the clash of philosophies concerning the war was inevitable.

(Continued next week)
