• 2 pac participa como bailarín para Digital Underground.

• Se estrena en la emisora de radio WKCR de New York el “Strecht & Bobbito show”, programa dedicado a la música hip hop donde se hacían sonar demo-tapes (cintas de demostración) y freestyles (improvisaciones) en directo de rappers noveles que por aquel entonces no contaban con sello discográfico como Big L, Notorious B.I.G., Wu Tang Clan, Fugees o Fat Joe, todos ellos artistas reconocidos en la posteridad.

• Luther Campbell (2 Live Crew) y un propietario de una tienda de discos de Florida son arrestados por el polémico álbum de 2 Live Crew, “As Nasty as They Wanna Be” (Tan asquerosos como ellos quieran ser).

1991

• El álbum de N.W.A. “Niggaz 4 Life” vende alrededor de 954.000 copias en su primera semana, un trabajo que marcaría la ruta de muchos álbumes de rap hardcore en la posteridad.

• Cypress Hill lanza su primer disco e inician una campaña para legalizar el cáñamo.

• Tupac es asaltado y recibe cinco disparos en el vestíbulo de Quad Recording Studios en Manhattan, New York. Después de su recuperación acusaría a Puff Daddy, Notorious B.I.G. y Andre Harrell (mitad del dúo Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde) del ataque que sufrió.

• Queen Latifah gana un Grammy en la categoría “Best rap solo performance” por el tema “Unity”.

• Tupac firma por Death Row Records después de que Suge Knight pagase una fianza por él de 1,4 millones de dólares para sacarlo de la cárcel por una condena por supuestos abusos sexuales, Tupac siempre se declaró inocente.

• Eazy E muere de sida a los 31 años.

• Notorious B.I.G., apodado ya por aquel entonces por algunos como “King of New York”, es nombrado “Lyricist of the year” por la revista Source. Su single “One More Chance” fue directo al top de las listas.

1996

• “The Score”, una mezcla de letras conscientes y comprometidas con pinceladas de reggae, se convierte en el disco mas exitoso de The Fuggees. Debuta en el número uno y gana dos Grammys, aportando un respiro de aire distinto a la escena del Hip Hop.

• Jay-Z lanza su después alabado debut, “Reasonable Doubt” (Duda razonable).

• Respaldado por Dr. Dre, Eminem vende 4 millones de copias de su debut, “The Slim Shady LP”.

yesterday i went over to cousin’s house for dinner and was given dating advice by another guest.

i don’t like it when people try to give me dating advice.  especially if i’m NOT specifically LOOKING for a date!  i’m sorry but i don’t really want to lurk around comic book shops and join an intramural basketball team right now, okay?!  jeez…

maybe when i’m really desperate for the scent of a man i’ll start wearing a push-up bra and perfume (so kidding.)

First one is the new The Game track. Me personally, I wouldn’t play it in the club, but it’s a nice one for on the road !

Mr. L.A. a.k.a. Jayceon Terrell Taylor kicks it nice on this one, but go Gucci Mane as backup. Both of the MCs sound nice on a Timbo beat but it’s not really the heater I would have expected after the bomb they already dropped (Put You On The Game). And what about The Documentary actually ?That was a classic … Get back to that level, O.G. !

The next track is a nice feature of one of my favourite female MCs: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott and a new cat in the game: Teyana Taylor !

You might know Missy from Hits like The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), Hot Boyz, Get Ur Freak On, One Minute Man, Work It, Gossip Folks, Pass That Dutch, Lose Control and Ching-a-Ling ! And, by the way, she makes some of the best black music videos ever !

Teyana Taylor is a 19 years old (!) singer and rapper and signed on Star Trek Entertainment , which is the label of Pharrel Williams. So please get used to that voice, ’cause she is about to blow !

I just cant get that song outta my ears – it’s really sticky !

Missy Elliott Feat. Teyana Taylor – Put It On Ya

It has been some time since Missy Elliott has come with something new. Early last year, she released a single, “Ching-A-Ling.” That single was supposed to kick off her album, Block Party.

Initially, the album was supposed to be released in the late summer of 2008. However, once the singles that she released failed to gain massive airplay, Atlantic Records grew fearful of releasing Missy’s album. In previous years, Elliott had been one of Atlantic’s top-selling acts.

Due to a lack of interest surrounding the album, Block Party was pushed back and received no promotion. Missy Elliott went back in and recorded her album, again. Once again, Missy Elliott has completed the Block Party album. For guest appearances, she has confirmed a spot from Lil Wayne.

Missy Elliott will be releasing Block Party on January 16, 2010 on The Goldmind, Inc. and Atlantic Records.

One of the greatest female acts ever was on top of their game, as En Vogue celebrated 20
years as a group in Los Angeles on Sunday night.  It was a rousing, soulful performance that
was filled with all of their hits and a medley of old school favorites.

Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, Dawn Robinson and Terry Ellis have recently reunited after
some shuffling of the group’s lineup and look and sound as good as ever.  En Vogue’s last #1
single was in 1996 (“Don’t Let Go (Love)” featured in the movie “Set It Off”) but their talent
and music has stood the test of time.  Hits like “Hold On,” “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna
Get It),” “Free Your Mind” and “Love Don’t Love You” would hold their own in today’s digital
download environment.

Multi-platinum selling R & B Soul artist Ginuwine brought a steamy set to the bill, bringing a surge of women to the front  as he moved across the stage.  An talented artist who has performed with Diddy, Timberland, Brandy, Missy Elliott and Tyreese, he did not disappoint.  “In Those Jeans,” and Ginuwine’s popular “Pony” brought a ton of energy to the club.  He even did a tribute to Michael Jackson, covering “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Don’t Stop ‘Till You Get Enough,” featuring some impeccable dance moves.

One of the highlights of the set was a 15 minute medley of old school music that the ladies
announced were “the fabric of America.”  Included were “Ain’t No Mountain,” “Ring My Bell,”
“Best of My Love,” “RESPECT” and “Lady Marmalade.”  The 1993 Salt-N-Pepa hit, “Whatta
Man” had the sold out crowd shaking their bodies in the aisles as they waived their hands in the
air.
 
En Vogue were a bit sentimental, looking back on their career that they called, “20 years
strong,” with their families in attendance.  They thanked their producer Denzil Foster who was
the original mastermind that put the group together.  They also thanked opening act Rhona
Bennett, who they said “graced us with her presence.”  Bennett was a member of En Vogue
from 2003 to 2008 and has been given the name, “Miss R & B.”

As En Vogue closed this night of celebration with “What’s It Gonna’ Be?,” fans left Club Nokia
with the feeling that there were more empowering anthems to come from this talented quartet.

Several Christmases ago I decided to expand my lovely wife’s musical horizons with a couple of female-vocalled hip-hop albums. There was a decent logic to this, as various rappers had piqued her fancy.

A bit of research saw my secruing works by Missy Elliott and this here 1996 effort from the first woman rapper to have a platinum-selling album.

I’m not sure I’d given it more than a cursory listen until yesterday afternoon.

After several spins, these are my impressions:

- Ms. Brat spits out rhymes at an enviable pace

- She cusses like a sailor

- She may be about to pop a cap in me (or some Westside niggas)

- She has rather dubious taste in terms of R&B backing tracks (the Bee Gees tribute on here is a big cringefest).

There ain’t that much here that sticks in the head or the behind.

I’m reluctant to diss the Bratstress too much. She is hard, and apparently doing some jail time for assault. She’s also connected, with her half-sister married to the Prime Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Nevertheless, the search for the stand-out female rapper continues. Any tips?

“Hot Boyz” It’s the remix featuring Nas, EVE, and Lil Mo

When you think 2001 there’s really only one thing that sticks in your head, September the 11th. I distinctly remember coming in from school that day and my Dad (with the telly off) saying to me, “Marc you’ll never believe what’s happened?” At which point I felt like saying washing machine’s broke or you’ve got a new partner (he was going through divorce in 2001 y’see) but the telly came on and a picture of what seemed like loads of people covered in a big pile of fag ash and two towers obliterated by two jumbo jets were to scar and shock folk around the world. It was the beginning of the American led war on terror! Many believe it’s a conspriracy, but “The Fear” was here! But then again “The Fear” was already here from that February as Hear’Say were unleashed as winners of ITV’s “Popstars” which went out to spout more of the same rubbish to this very day (JLS excluded!)

Anyway them aside 2001 was actually another very very good year for music and not just for “Bridget Jones’ Diary” and Kylie parading around in a sheet with a hood cut out. With so many (and so many we couldn’t include) quality dance and urban tracks it was a year of discovery for me in terms of music part thanks to my brother, divorce and MTV-over exposure day and very very late night (ta bro) my 2001 was a rollercoaster – enjoy the ride!

1. WHEATUS – ‘TEENAGE DIRTBAG’

It was NEVER off “The Box” – just NEVER off it! The first of American pop-rock band Wheatus’ 2001 big sellers ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ was taken from the film “Loser” starring “American Pie’s” Jason Biggs. ’Teenage Dirtbag’ was so big that  it also appeared in a car advert (bit fucked up if you remember it!) It’s lost it’s cred now but ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ really did sum up what life was like for us teenagers back in 2001….  i’ve got two tickets to Iron Maiiiiden baaaaby, come with me Friday don’t say maaaybeee (can we play with madness instead?)

When Timbaland wasn’t a complete sellout and Missy Elliott was still a fat mother bitch, ‘Get UR Freak On’ was Missy’s first UK top ten hit  and prodomonently featured the Indian ektara! Complete with a deranged video featuring cameos from Ja Rule, Ludacris(ps), LL Cool J and white black gimps (with kooky eyes), ‘Get UR Freak On’ was one of the essential urban tracks of 2001!

3. THE AVALANCHES – ‘SINCE I LEFT YOU’

A pile of records mashed up on two samplers and a bunch of turntables sound mad enough? Doesn’t to us as Australian act The Avalanches make our Super 7 with “Since I Left You.” The duo’s two singles of that year reached the top 20 and with two uber cool and stunning videos to match the soundtrack, for lovers of credible dance music like myself (bit hard to imagine that is it not) it was a bit hard pushed not to include one of their records in this list!

4. iiO – RAPTURE

Seeing as Destiny’s Child ‘Survivor’ was our favourite album of 2001, ‘Bootylicious’ got a last minute boot from the list to makeway for this drunken slur (sounds it!) The neo-dance gem ‘Rapture’ was a #2 hit in November 2001 for the New York dance act and unfortunately they were pretty much a one hit wonder, but then again only if you go by the names Eric Prydz or Fedde Le Grand then you tend to get more than one hit through the Ministry Of Sound offset label Data….. (anybody else noticed?)

6. BASEMENT JAXX – ROMEO

Jaxx go Bhangra-Bhangra-Bhangra! ‘Romeo’ is one of the standout dancetracks from 2001 and features the vocals from the extremely talented Kele Le Roc on the track! Add to that a full blown Bollywood dance affair video and the result was a top 5 smash and huge airplay anthem for the Jaxx in the summer of 2001!

7. KYLIE MINOGUE – CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD

It’s minimalist heaven written by Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis, ‘CGYOMH’ is Kylie’s biggest selling UK single to date! But forget the song it was the video that made us drop our jaws at this dance genius as Kylie wore what seemed like a sheet of cloth with a hood attached, to this day we’re not sure about those red men and women though! A mashup was serviced with New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ in 2002 and was featured in her Brit awards performance that year. Random music fact time - Kylie’s metallic dress featured in the video is “apparently” a tribute to Roisin Murphy’s similar outfit in the video for Moloko’s 99′ hit “Sing It Back”… cool eh!

Off the back of 2000’s huge selling “Groovejet”, SEB’s solo career started with two pop anthems, the second of which was the Xmas party anthem “Murder On The Dancefloor.” “Murder” was written by none other than the New Radicals lead singer Gregg Alexander, who also responsible for Ronan Keating’s ‘Life Is A Rollercoaster.’ The track featured a video that’d put Strictly to shame (sorry Alesha) and a killer remix package, take it away Sophie!

I have spent now 5 years as a Single Mama. I have a child who is not insane. I am not bankrupt. I have not traded Mr. Wrong for a slew of sugar daddies, dimwits or thugs. And, despite the spam of “Meet Men Now” that clouds my life – despite the scramble here and scramble there, juggle this and juggle that – I am happy.

But I have not seen so many happy stories. I have seen the ugly, the bad, the wrecked, the inscrutable, the sad and the just plain horrific. Being happy as a Single Mama does not fit the stereotypes of Single Mamadom in a patriarchal society. So there isn’t much information out there supporting the reality of Happy Single Mamas. Or how to BE a Happy Single Mama.

It seems that I need to delineate, exactly, how to BE a Single Mama. Or at least how I do it. I can’t guarantee happiness. Results may vary.

But I can – at least – advise avoiding a few traps that may leave you broken, bruised, or confused.

Stop waiting for Prince Charming. Amy Tan wrote that there are the types of turtles who feed on swallowing people’s tears. If someone gets a rush from playing the role of riding up on a white horse and saving you from the weight of your life – be wary. Be very, very wary. Or rather, be very, very afraid. Or rather, lets just break it down like this: JUST SAY NO.

Skip the event, eat the ice cream. Don’t over-analyze. Do nap. Let a beautician wash your hair. Let a masseuse rub your back. Drive through the full service lane at the gas station. Get a pedicure. Even if you are vegan – at least get an unsweetened iced tea at the drive through window. Outsource. Don’t think. Breathe. If you have to hang your head between your knees, remember to breathe.

Get your finances in order. Read Beth Kobliner. Read Ariel Gore – especially the Hip Mama Survival Guide. Use what is available to you. Work it out. Use every any governmental assistance you qualify for – and then work. Work, work, work.

Talk to Big Brother. Institutions are created to serve the public. They don’t make you institutionalized – unless your head is a sponge and your spine is a feather boa. Whatever you may think of the government, big government, this organization, that organization – you can be in this world without being of this world. Public resources are there for a reason. Welfare. Consumer Credit Counseling. You are a part of the public. You need resources. Go for it. Two more words: YWCA. YMCA. (OK those were acronyms, not words. I know.)

Dating: Not a requirement. Fun idea. If only because you are entitled to do it. But you are also entitled to buy every widget in Walmart that you can. You are also entitled to eat pig skin until you vomit. Entitlement is a tricky thing.

You are entitled to date. You are not required to date.
That should be a relief. A relief indeed.

Your child or children have one childhood. Just one. And you are providing it. Weigh wisely. Home Alone is a bad movie. It’s not an option. Please don’t get your options from movies or TV. Thank you.

Surround yourself with people who respect your time and your responsibilities as a mother. If someone disrespects you once – Gone! You simply cannot make time for someone who does not respect your time, your responsibilities, your family or your priorities. You cannot let anyone waste your time. You have precious little time to begin with. And it’s all already allocated . Remember this rule: One Loser per Lifetime is the Limit.

Popcorn and pancakes for dinner and pyjamas all day on Saturday is not just all right. It’s your right. The 4 basic food groups should go into your little person or little people every day. But no-one ever said you have to sit up at the table and use the right fork.
Fork that.

Find an anthem. Or two. Or twelve. “Like Babygirl, I ain’t got a motor boat but I can float your boat. We can live without the punks just you and me.”

Don’t Worry. Be Happy.
