The great thing about having a camera on you all the time these days is the ability to upload these

The great thing about having a camera on you all the time these days is the ability to upload these to Facebook. My Palm Pre has this feature and I love it. It also gives me the ability of course to take snaps and upload them to my blog. Initially when I started this blog I was taking the pictures with a Canon EOS 5D2 which I have now sold and downgraded or swapped out for a Canon EOS T1i. The 5D2 was a fantastic camera but to be honest it was too bulky and heavy for me to take out and about on a daily basis.

The Trump Tower with it's head in the Clouds

The T1i I have yet to take an opinion on. I had it for a month and it started freezing on me at the most horrendous time i.e. at my sister in laws graduation. I was mortified. I was hoping to get some great shots of her for her album and the damn thing kept freezing while using the flash. The camera is due back from the, in warranty, repair shop tomorrow. I hope it arrives in time as I want to take it down to our friends for Thanksgiving.

Clearly the quality of the images I am taking for this blog has dropped. Here is one I took last December. I suppose ultimately I am just trying to show a sample of my day or a taste of it rather for me and for you. Who are you? Not sure really. I seem to get steady traffic to this blog, although I don’t advertise it but it’s nice you come along to view it anyway. I suppose it panders to the exhibitionist in me such as it is.

The Reflecting Pool

Once I get my Canon T1i back I want to throw myself back into my photography and get out there again taking pictures. It’s been a while and winter approaches. I hope it’s a snowy one.

So
We all have one of those days some days
When the head has been stuffed and shredded
And you don’t need to be in bed to be in bed
Flickering eyes and distilled thoughts
Wrapped and caught in some list of lists
And constant reminders of the list of lists
Even a gentle swim in the morning may be
along a river soaked in a mist.

So
It’s the last few types of a glittered desk
A wreckage of expectations and possibilities
And then he says ‘Are you happy?’
I am not even sure what that question means
Sometimes a better one may be ‘Are you waiting for the light?’
Then the case could be opened and the jewels rested in my palms
While I hold the gifted memories placed before me
As I sit and wait for the light.

One of the projects completed last week was a series of products on zazzle which feature my photgraph, Sunrise Over the Columbia River #4. The Columbia River shines radiantly in the sunrise as it flows tranquilly towards the pacific ocean bordered by dark silhouettes of evergreen trees standing like sentinels on the Oregon shore and mist shrouded mountains beyond in Washington.

There is a world, a world in which we live in, where not everything is as perfect as we wish it was.

There is a world, a world in which we live in, where not everything is as perfect as we wish it was. But the folks over at the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company want to change that. They will be in charge of the creation and production of Masdar City, the world’s first city to have a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology. The area, will cover 2.3 square miles, and will be powered by a 40-60 megawatt solar power plant, photovoltaic modules will be stationed on all roofs producing another 130 megawatts, with wind farms built just outside of the city’s borders powering the city with another 20 megawatts.

Masdar also intend on hosting the largest hydrogen power plant in the world, stationed in the United Arab Emirates. It’s water supply will be roughly 60% less than similarly sized communities and will still be enough for all 50,000 inhabitants, 80% of that water will be recycled, with the other 20% being waste water being used for crop irrigation. They also have a nice little waste plan, attempting to reduce it to zero, they will use waste for fertilizer and if an extra power source is needed they will use waste incineration. Metals and plastics will be re-cycled or re-used for other purposes.

As for travel, automobiles are to be outlawed within the city borders, instead the inhabitants of Masdar City will accomplish travel through public mass transits and podcars (personal rapid transit). The city will also be surrounded by a perimeter wall channelling out hot desert winds and instead allowing cooler breezes to roam through it’s streets. Educationally, Masdar City will have the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), the little sister to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Below are some pictures of what’s to come.

One of the projects I have been working on over the past week is to create a series of products on Zazzle using a picture I took a few months ago from one of our windows. Looking from Rainier, Oregon across the Columbia river towards Washington is a spectacular view of bright sunlight shining on a layer of dark, moody clouds above a layer of golden morning sky. Beyond the silhouettes of evergreens and small town buildings, the Columbia river shimmers with an amber glow of reflected sunrise as the far bank is obscured in a dark morning mist…

A few weeks back I did a shoot similar to this, but used a flagged bare flash. I wanted to try this shot again, but add some colour to it. I once again flagged my flash by splitting an empty paper towel tube length wise and putting it over the flash head. Flagging is using something to control where the light goes. To make the mist stand out you want a pitch black background. This means no light spilling onto it. To accomplish this, I back lit the mist and flagged the flash to keep the light from spilling onto my background. I slid a red news paper bag over my flagged flash. If you do this make sure it is rather loose fitting, especially if you are firing the flash anywhere remotely near full power. A single pop even on a lower power generates a lot of heat near the flash head and can melt plastic. I’ve seen flash lenses ruined from gels put on too tight and melting. I’ve also had a full power pop from my flash create smoke from a piece of paper held about an inch in front of it to change the lights colour. Just be careful. I had my flagged and bagged flash about 6 inches below and a few inches behind my spray bottle used to make the mist. Pretty simple set up. The background was a black t-shirt a few inches behind the subject. Focus was achieved by holding my hand with the bottle in the frame, focusing on it, locking the focus, than moving my hand down to fire the bottle. I upped the saturation in post processing to bring out the red a bit more.
