Well, thanks to a certain bigwig, I got off of my duff to make a mix CD for his round robin dealio.

Well, thanks to a certain bigwig, I got off of my duff to make a mix CD for his round robin dealio. No major theme this time like prior mixes… the only rule I placed before myself was that everything is current (i.e.- released in 2009).

{If you aren’t part of the round robin and want a CD, contact me. If you’re local, even better. I’ll get ‘em out around Thanksgiving.}

The following songs were put on the mix CD from lossless sources for promotional purposes only (read: free direct market advertising to people who decidedly love music). Most of the artists on this compilation are independent (put out the music themselves) or signed to smaller, independent labels. If you like what you hear, check out their music / support them with your wallet if you are able. The artists’ Webpage, MyFace & Spacebook (whether official or not), and Amazon links are available for each song below. I’ve also included concert review links if I’ve seen the artist recently.

PDF front liner is available HERE (designed to print double-sided).

Well, the person who got this round robin going (Brad) was a direct influence in me getting into Nellie McKay back when Get Away From Me came out. I’ve been a fan ever since. I think GAFM is my favorite of hers, but she’s still quite consistently entertaining to me. Her latest album is a tribute to the late great Doris Day. It’s missing some of Nellie’s sly wit, but is definitely fitting in her “I wish I was born in another era” wishes. The album art is 135% fitting for Nellie, too. Perfect choice!
I could have put on some more skwoky Zorn, but I opted for a more accessible number. John Zorn is prolific, but this was actually a slow year – I only count six Zorn-related releases. O’o is twelve lyrical and adventurous instrumentals combining world music, surf, exotica, soundtracks, easy listening, and minimalism dedicated to twelve different birds (Chippy’s artwork is amazing). “Miller’s Crake” is a delightful Guaraldi-esque jaunt from the band that came out of the Electric Masada / The Gift / The Dreamers sessions: Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Kenny Wollesen, Trevor Dunn, Joey Baron, and Cyro Baptista.
I was planning on going to Eugene Celebration anyway, but I got a call from a friend who suggested that we meet and definitely go to see Extra Golden. Um, OK, sure. Then I saw them, and wow… fuuuuun. I love African music, but sometimes it’s gets all too similar unless you do something fun (a la Fela Kuti, Antibalas, etc). Well, Extra Golden are half Kenyan and half American (which I guess is the “something fun” part? I don’t know). They fuse some great jam-rock with Kenyan beats* and singing… great stuff. Fantastic live show, too. *-Though, coincidentally, not so much Kenyan beats on this track. Yeah, sorry.
I am usually not a fan of vocal jazz… it’s usually too full of schlock, if you ask me. Well, Madeleine’s smoky voice overrides that generalism for me. She’s a fantastic vocalist, a throwback to the golden era of jazz vocalists. This album is her first of non-covers. All original, either written solo or co-written, Bare Bones moves her from a “fantastic standards” singer to bringing vocal jazz back into fresh territory.
The best progressive rock band around, Porcupine Tree’s The Incident is a 55-minute epic concept album/song. “Flicker” is actually a session b-side from the 2nd disc from the collection. I got a chance to see Porcupine Tree this September, and Steven Wilson & Co delivered the impeccable studio sound to the stage. It’s almost magic.
(formerly know as the Office of Strategic Influence). O.S.I. is a joint collaboration of Chroma Key’s Kevin Moore and Fates Warning’s Jim Matheos. Most of Blood is heavier progressive rock, but I tend to like the more Chroma Key-esque tracks like “Terminal.” The album has guests Gavin Harrison (of Porcupine Tree) on drums, Mikael Åkerfeldt (of Opeth) on vocals for one track, and Tim Bowness (or No-Man) on vocals for one track as well. The 2nd disc also features a Kevin Moore-sung, rockin’ tribute to Elliott Smith (“Christian Brothers”).
This little band that could from Cincinnati is getting some good buzz in major publications (I know Spin has featured them several times). I went to college with their female lead singer, Lisa Walker, and remember when she did a more folky thing. I think Wussy’s sound suits her well (and vice versa). Anyway, this is their third record, and features some great songs from both Lisa and Ass Ponys’ Chuck Cleaver.
Ikue Mori is an interesting instrumentalist. She mostly utilizes a laptop, and I saw her play live with Ellery Eskelin & Jim Black in NYC in 2007 and was wowed by the improvisational nature of her craft. Most of her albums are more avant-garde. She has one album that I’d consider to be much more accessible (1995’s Painted Desert on Japan’s DIY/Avant label). Class Insecta is also more accessible than most of her work. I suppose if you like well composed, electronic music dedicated to insect species, it’s for you!

This is a Good cop-out. Bad cop-outs will come later.

It’s Saturday night. I got sucked in by SNL and the squinty charms of Taylor Swift. She impressed me with her commitment to the show, she seemed to really be trying, getting into the bits, etc. Then she played music, which was OK, but not for me. Not for any of my friends, or my self-respecting colleagues either. Maybe for a zillion people from this and many other planets, but not in my house. I was listening to her song (as I was walking over to the remote to push mute) and I started thinking about songs and songwriting. Do people like this write their own songs? Are they coached by uncredited svengalis? Etc.

My mind popped back to a compilation disc (for you old people – it’s a mix tape) I made for a colleague of mine, another copywriter on my team. I must have been either bored at the office or really, really full of myself, because I decided to write liner notes for the mix, thinking that my opinion of the songs included would somehow edify B, the recipient. The premise of the disc was that these were songs that came out in her very early youth. I am sure she listened to it once or twice and tossed it, but maybe not. Maybe she uses it as a coaster.

Anyway, my liner notes from 20 Great Songs from when You Were (very) Young follow. I am sure I didn’t know everything included in these notes and therefore must credit allmusic.com and probably wikipedia for some inspiration and information along the way. The songs and artists that I write about have certainly provided me with information and inspiration at times, so I thank them too. If you know and like these songs, I applaud you. If you do not know these songs, get to know them, you’ll be better for it.

20 Great Songs from when You Were (very) Young

Angry, raw and unexpected, The Pretenders’ first release Pretenders (1980) includes some of the most enduring and still-fresh sounding songs I’ve ever heard. Two are included on this compilation. Listening to the album, it’s clear that Chrissie Hynde was going through some shit. She had moved to London after college to pursue a career as a rock journalist and fell in with a pretty tough crowd. The tracks touch on topics ranging from drugs and rough sex to single-motherhood and love of children. The Wait, the first cut on this compilation closes out side one of the record. Pretenders also contained the single Brass in Pocket and a cover of Ray Davies’ (her lover, father of one of her kids and frontman of the Kinks) Stop Your Sobbing. The recording of Stop Your Sobbing was produced by Nick Lowe, whose So It Goes appears later on this disc.

The Clash promoted themselves as “the only band that matters.” For a while, following the release of London Calling (1980), that statement was absolutely true. Ambitiously released as a double album, London Calling contains many songs that are now a part of classic punk and post-punk lore. The song list, which includes London Calling, Clampdown, Train In Vain, Spanish Bombs, and Lost in the Supermarket (as well as a host of others), is basically a religious document. Rudie Can’t Fail (included here) somehow manages to meld Ska and Bo-Diddley type–beats, and a lyric that has as its antagonist a low-level thug and petty thief.

Rotating Head (1982) is included here not only because it is a great example of an English Beat song, but because many younger folks get exposed to it during hungover college viewings of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. So you’ve heard it. Hint: It’s when Ferris is running his ass off to beat his parents or principal home.

So Lonely (1980) is simply the finest Police song ever recorded. It’s so simple, based on a 50s four-chord progression, but really gets going with great interplay between Sting’s bass and Andy Summer’s slightly sloppy guitar playing. The lyrics are young and desperate and hokey but still… Sting owns them and really brings it home.

The Passenger (1977) is a great road song from Iggy Pop. It is not used to sell banking or cruises, which was the unfortunate fate of Lust for Life (from the same album). This came out even before you were “very young.” Iggy allegedly wrote the lyric to this on the German S-Bahn or commuter train. David Bowie sang back up on the “la la la” part.

Speaking of Bowie, Starman (1972) may be my favorite David Bowie song. It’s from an album called The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Bowie reinterpreted or reinvented himself into multiple personas throughout his career. Ziggy was one such persona.

Precious (1980), by the Pretenders is an angry rant against those people in life that find themselves above the rest of us or a bit too… precious. Chrissie snarled, “but not me baby/ I’m too precious/fuck off” and changed my life.

I was wary of including any so-called “classic rock” on this compilation. I figured that you could listen to whatever classic-rock station was on in the background and hear these next two exceptional songs, squeezed in among the mediocrity of radio. Then I thought about what made each of these exceptional.

Monkey Man is almost spooky, vaguely frightening. It’s like an anti-drug morality play that celebrates heroin at the same time. Listen to it loud. Originally released in 69, it was later PERFECTLY featured in the movie Goodfellas.

Tom Petty’s Even the Losers (1979) is a near-perfect, pop-rock classic. It describes a moment in time that so many American teens share and can relate to. “It was nearly summer as we sat on your roof/yeah we smoked cigarettes and stared at the moon.” It’s a song of growing up and apart from young friends and youthful loves. Plus, Petty’s wanting and exuberant “oh oh oh oh” toward the end is awesome and became a TP trademark.

Looking at the entirety of Nick Lowe’s career, he may have been more important as a producer and songwriter than performer. He wrote (What’s so funny ‘bout) Peace, Love and Understanding that Elvis Costello made famous. I like this one, So it Goes (1976). He also wrote and performed Cruel to Be Kind.

Australia’s The Hoodoo Gurus had several decent records and garnered a decent following in the States between 1980 and 1990. During my college tenure, Oxford’s radio station 97X considered them a mainstay. Come On (1987) is, I think, a nice gem on the album Blow Your Cool.

Did Duran Duran define eighties music? To many they did. Named for the villain from the movie Barbarella, these pretty boys basically owned radio and MTV after the releases of singles Hungry Like the Wolf and Rio, respectively (the album was named Rio). Every girl I knew had at least one D2 poster I their room. New Religion (1982) was a deeper cut from the album and had some pretty interesting singing/speaking going on as well as a pretty killer bass line.

Lloyd Cole is/was an English singer-songwriter who fronted a band called the Commotions. Lost Weekend (1985) is a nice little song that has a great sense of place.

Back to Bowie. This one, Oh! You Pretty Things is from 1971 (you were very, very, very young). It’s one of my favorites. It is rumored that the song is about aliens taking over the earth and obliterating humankind. Whatever.

Harborcoat (1983), is from Reckoning, the second full-length recording by R.E.M. I have NO IDEA what Stipe was singing about. I love it for the quick start and the crazy harmonies throughout.

It makes sense that the ultimate drinker’s song should be by the ultimate drinking band. Here Comes A Regular (1985) is from The Replacements major-label debut, Tim, and is quite literally a welcome call to a ‘regular’ joining the other sods at the local bar. It’s a little lonely, depraved and sad – like so many alcoholics (pot. kettle. black.) poised over an Old Style and a whisky at Orazio’s. Mmmm that’s the life. The Replacements were from Minneapolis.

Though they were weary from relentless and chaotic touring, the Police were expected to release a third album (Zenyatta Mondatta) AND hit the road for yet another tour at roughly the same time. So it was between shows touring behind Regatta de Blanc that they penned most of Zenyatta’s tunes. One of my favorites is the quirky and ska-influenced Man in a Suitcase (1980), a quick little tune about travel and, coincidentally, the name of a British TV show during Sting’s youth.

Back to Minneapolis. Who’s from there? Husker Du. From their 1985 record Flip Your Wig comes Makes No Sense at All. When it was released as a single, the B-side was Love is All Around, the theme to the Mary Tyler Moore Show which was set in Minneapolis.

Pink Moon (1971) is a beautiful, beautiful song. Its use in a Volkswagen commercial was bemoaned by purists, but fuck them. It was perfect in that spot.

Talking Heads’ This Must be the Place (Naive Melody) is another all time favorite of mine. It’s simple, peaceful, hopeful and nearly perfect. Enjoy. It’s from 1983.

It’s time for another Top 5 Friday

Good Friday Hip Hop! If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know that I try to get at least one top 5 list in every month. Today I will countdown the top 5 trends in hip hop production for 2009.

5. The Airhorn

This has been a mixtape staple for years but only recently are we hearing it in actual songs on purpose. It originated in Reggae dance halls as a like a call to the dance floor. I remember hearing in a mixtape I got in like ‘01 from Canal Street in NY. Then I would hear it from Dj’s at parties (probably because half of their stuff came from mixtapes). Obviously Drake’s Forever was the linchpin song that demonstrated this trick but I heard some others this year as well. Even Young General wanted me to throw it in Headbanger Boogie.

4. The Drumma Boy Sound Effect

Even though Put On by Young Jeezy was the summer anthem for 2008, in 2009 everybody started biting Drumma Boy’s (the prodcuer of the song) style by inserting that electro synth build up sound effect into every damned song. My understanding is that it was supposed to be his signature tag but I guess it doesn’t work if everyone else does it.

3. Synthesizers

I suppose this was more of a carryover from 2008 but I think the death of Michael Jackson and the trend of 80’s throwback kept it going. In the last month I can’t turn on the radio without feeling like the line between hip hop, pop, techno and electro has been blurred beyond recognition.

2. Hi Pass Filtered Ad Libs

This is also known as the “telephone” effect. Obviously we were first introduced to this on B.I.G.’s Warning. But now it’s like people can’t make a song without having at least one track of vocals passed through the filter. Even singing vocals. That Sean Kingston song is a perfect example. Melodies or some sh*t like that.

1. The Triplet Kick

The staple song for the year on this one would be Every Girls by Drake, produced by Tha Bizness. It’s essentially an extra kick between a double. It’s really simple but I’ve heard it so much that I don’t understand why this never happened before. Timbaland used to do it all the time but when he did it with a bunch of other off beat type rhythms. These are like your basic 1,4,7,11 patterns (on a 16 step based sequencer) but done on a 1/32 as to be able to add that quick triplet. It’s funny because I know Jason is reading this right now and has no idea whatI am talking about.

come and get your love was kindly donated by lincoln barr of the highly recommended RED JACKET MINE

come and get your love was kindly donated by lincoln barr of the highly recommended RED JACKET MINE and his fellow friends . this compilation is awesome with bands appearing kindly like down pilot who’s last two albums just blew me away . and the clever visqueen who certainly can blast out a quality song . i cant really say enough about this other than try it you will love it .

FRIENDS OF RED JACKET MINE

1. Hand Me Down – Visqueen

Led by the fabulous Ms. Rachel Flotard (whose lovely pipes you might’ve heard backing Ms. Neko Case), Seattle rockers Visqueen have released one of 2009’s finest records in Message to Garcia. This track opens the album, and Ms. Case returns the favor on backing vocals. Thunderous, thrilling pop music.
http://www.visqueenonline.com

2. Racing Stripe Winter – Red Heart the Ticker

When I first heard this song on KEXP in the fall of 2006, I thought to myself, “I need to know these people.” Three years later, it’s still one of my favorites. Ty Gibbons and Robin MacArthur are some of the nicest folks you’ll ever meet, and absolutely enchanting in a live setting. They’ve since released another fine album, 2009’s Oh My! Mountains Below.
http://rhtt.net

3. Turnaround This Car – The Devil Whale

The mayors of Salt Lake City, Utah, and some of our best friends in music. Brinton Jones has the kind of voice that you can’t help feeling is singing directly to you, and I can’t think of a higher compliment. We love these guys, and you should, too.
http://www.myspace.com/devilwhale

4. Too Early – Cobirds Unite

Rusty Willougby (née Llama, Flop, Pure Joy) is one of my favorite songwriters in a city full of great ones, and his talents commingle with those of the aforementioned Ms. Flotard (Visqueen) and Mr. Barrett Martin (of Screaming Trees/Tuatara renown) to form Cobirds Unite. Rumor has it that an entire album’s worth of these supple, lovely recordings exists…in the meantime, check out rustywilloughby.com to indulge.
http://www.rustywilloughby.com

5. Chelsea Turnaround – Downpilot

Paul Hiraga and the rest of Downpilot have been dear friends for ages, and we recently shared a record release party (for our new one, Lovers Lookout, and theirs, They Kind of Shine). Out now on Germany’s Tapete Records.
http://www.downpilot.com

6. Let You Down – Burning Rivers

My friends Ben London and Joshua Medaris lead Burning Rivers, a band in which I’m honored to fill the ‘Steve Gaines’ (read: third guitar) role as time permits. They’ve been in other, better-known, bands, of course, but all you really need to know is that Burning Rivers is American rock and roll of the highest order. This track is from their forthcoming debut LP, The Hardest Part of Letting Go.
http://www.myspace.com/burningrivers

7. This World (Already Over) – Nathan Wade & the Dark Pioneers

Nathan Wade is a man of extraordinary cojones, bucking against indie-rock fashion to pursue a singular vision he bleakly describes as ‘post-apocalypse Americana.’ This track, while brilliant, is hardly indicative of the freewheeling breadth of the Dark Pioneers’ forthcoming debut full-length, The Gospel of Rust. It does, however, feature Patrick Porter (of RJM) on pedal steel, and yours truly on Morricone lead guitar. You’ll have to discover the rest for yourself.
http://www.nathanwademusic.com

8. Milo – Amateur Radio Operator

Some of RJM’s earliest Seattle shows were shared with Mark Johnson and his band, Amateur Radio Operator. This song (from their debut album, Sirens of Titan) has always been one of my favorites of theirs. Epic, atmospheric Americana.
http://www.myspace.com/amateurradio

9. Silver Spoon – Ben Brackett

Wunderkind Ben Brackett released an absolutely stellar debut record in 2007’s Hear Ye Hear Ye, and I hear he’s working on a new one, sure to humble songwriters twice his age (again). Rest assured I’ll be listening.
http://www.myspace.com/benjaminbrackett

10. Out of Town – Explone

Full disclosure: Explone is led by my good friend Patrick Porter, who also plays guitar and pedal steel in RJM. Fans of the brilliant melodicism present in his RJM contributions will find much to love here. This lovely road song is featured on his debut album, Crooks.
http://www.explone.com

11. Thirty Reasons – Octoberman

Octoberman is a cross-Canadian indie/folk troupe led by my longtime pal Marc Morrisette: road warrior, gentleman, and scholar. This lovely ditty is from their most recent album, Fortresses, out now on White Whale Records.
http://octoberman.ca

12 . showponies – red jacket mine

lincoln and the boys of red jacket mine sure know how to write a song showponies is an awesome piece of writing . lovers look out while be looked at in years to come as a classic

Click here to download. 25.8 MB, 37 min. approx run time.

Inspired and intrigued by one of my favourite blogs, I have created a mixtape. It’s a bit rough around the edges (i.e., you might have to turn your volume up and down a few times), but I’m learning, promise!

I mixed this with Audacity, free audio editing software, and the cover is made with Inkscape.

Really I think the surprise of the tracks is important to its enjoyment, but here’s a track listing anyway:

Metamorphosis 1 (instrumental) – Philip Glass

Freight Train – Chas McDevitt & Nancy Whiskey

My Friend Dario (Dima Prefers Newbeat Mix) – Vitalic

Hide and Seek – Imogen Heap

The Humans are Dead – Flight of the Concords

Drug – Brian Tyler

Radio/Video – System of a Down

Cute Machines – Scars on Broadway

No More Memory – Cyriak

There are a few bonuses sounds in there as well.

Please check out all of these artists – they are great. I already have a Christmas one ready to go, but that won’t be for a few months yet.

Remember the mix tape? You know, the cassette you played in your car or your Aiwa stereo boom box that was a compilation of everything in your life? For those of you who forget or may not even know, mix tapes were way before CDs and archaic compared to iTunes.

I recently went home to my parents’ house for a visit and we purged the basement. I love purging. I feel like a weight has been lifted from me when I purge; even if it’s not my own stuff! This time, there was a lot of my things to get rid of, including my cassettes.

When my mom asked if we could get rid of them, I blanked. How could we throw out my tape collection where I first heard Whitney belt out “Greatest Love of All,” Bon Jovi croon “Born to Be My Baby,” or the theme song from “St. Elmo’s Fire?” Forgetting the actual tapes I owned, there were literally hundreds of mix tapes I had created over the years. Seriously, I didn’t get a CD player till I was like 19!

I made mix tapes for everyone and everything. If I had a house party, there was a mix tape. And there wasn’t just one – I had a slow jam mix for late night, a party mix for when things got rowdy and a mix of the two. I made mix tapes for my friends. When someone went through a break up, there was cassette full of depressing tunes to listen to while they cried their eyes out. When we all decided to get into shape, there were motivational mixes to pump us; when someone got their license, there was a driving mix; when we went on a road trip, prom, the shore, you name it, there were tunes to accompany us.

And of course there were mix tapes for your man, full of love songs, both happy and sad. But the best mix tape, at least in my mind, was when you got one from someone else, (i.e. a guy). Whether it was a boyfriend or a guy you liked, or even a good friend you crushed on, the fact that a guy was sitting there pushing play, record, stop, and perfectly mastering the set-up of each song for your personal enjoyment, sent chills down the spine.

So now, I was left to decide if I get rid of all those good memories. While I couldn’t physically watch them on YouTube or instantly play them on my Mac, they held a little piece of my youth that always made me smile, even if some of those times were the most difficult I thought I would ever endure (if I only knew then what I know now!).

I told my mom I needed to think about it and the bag stayed in the basement. While I contemplated getting rid of them, I realized, um, hello, I don’t even have a tape deck anymore to play these damn mixes. But they’re still there, collecting dust, until I’m ready to let go. iTunes Genius has nothing on my “Serious Depressing Mix Part 5″ or “Kathy’s Motivational Mix.”

The sense of levity this mix aims at is not of the literal variety.

This is the first of two Halloween mixes I’ll be posting this week. The present mix, timed to fit on

This is the first of two Halloween mixes I’ll be posting this week. The present mix, timed to fit on standard CD-R, is supposed to comprise vaguely creepy or eerie music. The kind of stuff that might freak out Bart, Lisa and Milhouse in their treehouse. Ghosts, spooks, witches, devils, murderers, weird people (like the coffin-building boy in Florence and the Machine’s excellent song), voodoo and so on. Marie Floating Over The Backyard apparently still scares Any Minor Dude’s friend, two years after he first heard it.

The second mix, which will go up mid-week, will be a bit more lighthearted, and even without the overcooked Monster Mash and Rocky Horror Picture Show.

TRACKLISTING

Brand New and I have one of those relationships where I obsess over the band for months, then promptly forget their entire discography for half a year. I do believe that, with the exception of a few songs, I haven’t blared their work since spring. I need to rectify this, starting right now, with this track – a personal favourite of mine – at the highest volume. It’s incredibly satisfying to listen to when you’re riled up about something… anything, really.

For those keeping track, by the way, I do have a playlist of every song featured thus far; it’s linked to the sidebar.

Underground. New York.

This post should probably be called mix cd or imix, lets be honest mix tape flows better.

I was cleaning out my cd case on Sunday…yes apparently I still actually own some. While doing that I found that I have a wide array of mix cds that have been made for me or by me. My friend Ainsley loves to put together a good mix cd, she’s a bit like Zach Braff in that way. What I quickly found was that I have a mix cd from every year I’ve lived in DC, each one a little different from the other. It’s funny though almost all six, have one common song, “Have a little faith in me”

That got me thinking about how life sometimes is a bit like a mix tape. Sometimes its a “kick butt, new life” mix or a dark and twisty, or one that commemorates an event. It could even be an honest testament to where we are in our faith. Like our lives, each “tape” we make changes with time, infused with what God has taught us, joys, heartaches and etc..

So if you could make a mix tape right now what would be the first song on it? Would there be a common theme?

Oh, hello… Helmet here.

Many people have been asking where I’ve been. Good question – let me explain.

In between eating Hot Pocket sandwiches and looking for cool sunglasses, I have spent every waking moment on a very important Fall Community Project. What you ask? It’s simple yet complex, both mainstream and far out… It’s a playlist for Tubesteak.

Sounds simple you may be thinking. Well, think again. Making a playlist for Tubesteak is like painting a neoclassical style painting for Picasso. The dude is a Mix Tape Master, the Sultan of Song. A Vibe Vampire, sinking his tapes into people’s cassette players across the world. Turning ordinary humans into funkifed dance freaks.

So without further adieu, I present you with my Fall Community Project. I call it:
