Mix08 in Las Vegas (5-7 Mar 2008) Ray Ozzie [KYN0801, 0:00] - Lots of great products during past ye

Mix08 in Las Vegas (5-7 Mar 2008)

Ray Ozzie
[KYN0801, 0:00]

- Lots of great products during past year
- Many software projects finally coming to fruition this coming year
- Mix ’08 is 1st of key launch milestones this year, culminating at PDC in October
- Many key elements of Software+Services will be released this year
- Let’s look at big picture, put various products into context

- Two distinct aspects of Microsoft’s services strategy
- Things that we do to deeply embrace advertising, which is economic engine that powers the web
- Internet is reshaping & transforming Microsoft’s existing products and services

- Advertising
- Innovation in the experiences on the web provides fuel for ad-based economic engine

- Content, Commerce, Community web properties–key drivers of user engagement
- Innovation in community area transforms the other properties (content/commerce) on the web
- E.g. blogs, social networks, etc.
- Greater and greater user engagement
- This user engagement is why advertising is now huge economic force on the web
- Online ads projected to grow from $40 billion to $80 billion over next 3 yrs
- Advertising is going to be the primary way that we all monetize services/apps on the web

- Aspect 1: What is Microsoft’s role in advertising on the web?
- Ensure that there is vibrant advertising ecosystem on the web
- Based on highly competitive ad platform
- Significantly investing in search and in content/commerce/community innovation
- Goal: highly engaged, well-targeted audience

- Aspect 2: How is the web impacting Microsoft’s products/services?
- Look at 3 core principles that MS is using to drive reconceptualization of its software, to embrace world of services

- 3 core principles
- People — Think of the web as a hub – of social & technology experiences — our “social mesh” and “device mesh”
- (Fundamental changes impacting the individual)
- Business — provide power of choice as enterprise moves to embrace the cloud
- Developers — We need to embrace a world of “small pieces, loosely joined”

- Principle 1 — Think of web as a hub / mesh
- Social mesh — interpersonal nature of web will impact everything that MS does
- All applications will incorporate the “group forming” aspects of the web (linking, sharing, ranking, tagging)
- Device mesh — number & diversity of our devices is on the rise (phones, PCs, smart TVs, DVRs, media centers, game consoles, car nav systems, etc)
- Idea of “My computer”, single PC, is dated, quaint
- Give way to personal collection of connected devices, brought together by the web
- Web serves as hub for these meshes

- Principle 2: Power of choice in the enterprise
- Most enterprises are in early stages, transition from dedicated application servers to virtualization and consolidating apps on computing grids
- “Virtualization powered utility computing model”
- Spans from enterprise data center, to cloud
- Utility computing model will reshape enterprise applications
- All of Microsoft’s software will be re-factored to have symmetry between
- Enterprise-based software
- Partner-hosted services
- Services in the cloud
- Power of server-service symmetry, allows IT to choose
- Systems are distributed, and federated

- Principle 3: Small pieces loosely joined
- Fabric of software & service componentry, spans from cloud to to world of devices
- Applications are trending towards loosely-coupled compositions
- Cooperating systems
- Transparency, standards, interoperability are key
- Lightweight APIs ubiquitous, e.g. REST, RSS, between services across the web
- XAML allows repurposing UI components
- New apps needing to extend beyond the browser, beyond the PC
- Users expecting rich, seamless experiences, delivered across all of their devices
- Applications take advantage of unique strengths of each platform
- Multi-device UI environment
- At back-end, new design models, more appropriate for cloud
- Vast arrays of commodity computing resources–storage & software
- Need new skills to: write code on back-end; deploy across grid; debug remotely
- Developer skills changed by shift to utility computing model

- How will Microsoft products be impacted by these principles?
- Will talk about specific offerings in 5 major groupings
- Connected devices, connected entertainment, connected productivity, connected business, connected development

- Connected devices
- We’re juggling/managing more and more interconnected devices
- Many of them are internet-aware at birth
- Use software to bring them all together into your own personal device mesh with web as hub
- Devices report into central server for status, health, location
- Remote control of all your devices, from anywhere
- Transparent synchronization of data across all devices
- Bi-directional synch of arbitrary feeds
- Application mgmt–centralized web-based deployment of device-based applications
- App platform that is cognizant of all of your devices
- MS has been working on this already
- For starters, looking at PCs, bringing all your machines into single seamless mesh
- Using web as hub
- Live Mesh tech preview

- Connected entertainment
- Only license your media once
- Organized collections/subscriptions once
- Use any of your devices to access/enjoy your media
- On portable device, in living room, on desktop
- Each person has “media-centric web presence” — express your tastes, interact w/others
- Microsoft entertainment products/services will be progressively transformed by this connected entertainment vision

- Connected productivity
- Productivity (for MS) =
- Office for PC
- Office Mobile for phone
- Office Live for web
- Seamlessly enjoy
- Rich dynamic benefits of working on PC
- Mobility, capture capabilities of phone
- Work-anywhere ubiquity of Internet
- Devices seamlessly connected, using web as “experience hub”
- Office live extends productivity into social mesh, sharing/tagging, etc.
- Office Live Workspace — in beta, Mar08
- Focus on servicing individual’s productivity needs
- Also deliver connected productivity to people in enterprise (e.g. Sharepoint, Exchange)

- Connected business (enterprise)
- Services, e.g. CRM, CRM Live
- Well received by small businesses
- Biggest impact of services on business — will come from shift to utility computing within enterprise
- During past year:
- Windows Server 2008, Hyper-V
- System Center products, e.g. Virtual Machine Manager
- “Embrace utility computing in the cloud”
- Now releasing:
- Online business services, beta in Mar08
- Run Exchange, Sharepoint, Office Communications as either local servers or as services in the cloud
- Beta for SQL Server Data Services — API for online data storage; high-scale database services

- Connected development
- Realizing connected development environment through:
- .NET Framework
- Silverlight
- Expression Studio (designers)
- Visual Studio (developers)

- This year, delivering on potential promised w/Silverlight
- Devs have many amazing technology choices to pick from
- You should “bet on Microsoft” — can create extraordinary experiences across world of devices

I was just reading Tim Sneath’s ‘live blog’ of the Ballmer/Kawasaki keynote at Mix

I was just reading Tim Sneath’s ‘live blog’ of the Ballmer/Kawasaki keynote at Mix, and noticed he blogged my question to Ballmer:

“1:46pm – Attendee: .NET is great and there’s been lots of innovation on this side of the developer platform; why did IE get left out for so long? Steve: partly because Internet Explorer was shipped as part of the operating system and there was a long gap between Windows XP and Windows Vista. You won’t see that kind of gap again – we now understand how to get things decoupled sufficiently to develop innovations separately from the OS and then bring them back later.”

I have to say, out of all the cool things that I was lucky enough to be a part of at Mix, actually talking to the man himself is what stands out in my memory. I’m a guy with absolutely no profile and yet I get the chance to ask him a somewhat impertinent question, and he took me seriously and gave his best answer. To me that’s just cool, and one of the reasons why I like the .Net community so much.

If you haven’t seen it, you can watch the keynote here. I’m at about 39 minutes in .

I finally managed to watch (bit by bit) the 2.5 hour video of the presentation by Microsoft at MIX08

I finally managed to watch (bit by bit) the 2.5 hour video of the presentation by Microsoft at MIX08.

It was a great presentation by Microsoft on various upcoming products and releases. The presentation starts with a keynote from Ray Ozzie, Chief Software Architect, Microsoft, after which the stage is conducted by Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager Internet Explorer, and Scott Guthrie, Corporate Vice President, .NET Developer Division.

Watch the Live Streaming Keynote: Ray Ozzie, Dean Hachamovitch, and Scott Guthrie

I had covered Dean’s presentation on Internet Explorer 8 in my previous blog post.

Now I had watch the rest of the video showcasing Silverlight 2.0 beta 1 and .net services. This second half of the presenation with main focus on Silverlight 2.0 beta was even more interesting and engaging than the IE8 demo. I was so thrilled by the showcasing of Silverlight 2.0 beta.

One thing is for sure.. Adobe has some serious competition for their solution for writing Rich Internet Applications (RIA) – Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR).

Btw, I learnt from the presentation that NBC is hosting the official olympics website which is going to provide live streaming of sports events and also provide a Video-on-demand. NBC apparently has used Silverlight extensively for their web site.

One of the most fascinating technologies showed at MIX08 was Deep Zoom, which was used in during the Hard Rock demo of their new Memorabilia site. It was a demo done right and the technology itself is pretty fascinating as well. Later during MIX the LiveLabs team opened up Photozoom, a new web service that allows you to create the same experience with your own fotos… and embed to you site/blog if you want.

Just like many other projects based on LiveLabs technology, this is a research project for now and not officially supported yet:

“PhotoZoom is an experimental project developed by a small group of Microsoft developers, and it is definitely not an official, supported Microsoft product. Also, I cannot make any guarantees that it will be operational at all times, that it will support a large number of users, etc. This is not an official Microsoft press release and I am not a spokesperson. I can’t make any suggestions about future Microsoft product releases related to this technology or concept. In other words, I hope people will have fun with it, but please set your expectations accordingly.”

Still an interesting evolution though so make sure you check it out. I can’t embed an album here (because WordPress.com doesn’t allow me) but here’s an album I just created with some pictures of the Grand Canyon. You will need Silverlight 2 beta 1 to make it work. Oh and by the time Photozoom is rolled out more publicly, I’m pretty sure the ‘logo’ will change as well

My ambition to blog everyday during the conference was met by the reality of not having as much time

My ambition to blog everyday during the conference was met by the reality of not having as much time as I had imagined.

After 2.5 days of great sessions and conversations I have to say that the conference was one of the best I have attended. The sessions were really well done with the exception for the last one I attended. The MS presenters were all consistently good – the best 2 being Scott Hanselman (ASP.NET MVC) and Karen Korby (Silverlight 2.0 Controls.)

I feel that not only did I learn a lot but more importantly I have walked away re-energized and focused. I had a feeling that Silverlight 2.0was going to be awesome but after working with the beta bits I realized that it is a game changer. The ability to create RIAs (Rich Internet Applications) in a familiar and productive environment is just awesome.

I have started to re-design my company website (which is in dire need of an update – a case of “the shoemakers children are often shoeless”) as a way to get my feet wet with the SDK. I have worked with WPF and WCF over the last year but now that it can be leveraged in the a cross-platform/cross-browser way it is a viable option for the work that I do.

I will post more detailed impressions of Silverlight 2.0 Beta once I get a working version of the new site up and running.

This last post about the MIX conference is not that much related to the conference anymore actually.

This last post about the MIX conference is not that much related to the conference anymore actually. The conference stopped on Friday around noon and since most of the Belgians only left on Saturday morning, we had booked a helicopter flight over and trough the Grand Canyon with Sundance Helicopters. What can I say, if you are ever in Vegas do treat yourself with this, because it’s absolutely brilliant!

The Sundance company comes to pick you up with a limo by the hotel and drives you to their spot at the airport. Once you get there you sign in and about 15-20 minutes later you’re airborne, over the airport straight to the mountains. The total flight time is close to 90 minutes back and forth, and there’s a scheduled stop somewhere in the middle of the Grand Canyon offering you a fantastic view accompanied by a glass of champagne and a small lunch.

And as an image says more than a thousand words, here is what it looked like.

During the flight the helicopter films both inside and outside of the whole trip and you can buy the DVD with that footage. I’ll let you know if that’s any good by the time it arrives via post mail. Anyway, here is the full set.

We ended the day at Morton’s Steakhouse (a personal favorite) making this the perfect ending to a great event.

The key session of day 2 at MIX was without a doubt the Q&A between Guy Kawasaki and Steve Ballmer. You’ll have to watch it and see for yourself what you think of this, but I found it a quite unique experience (and I think many did with me). Can you think of any other CEO of a company such as Microsoft to do a keynote this way?

During the rest of the day, before and after the keynote, I focused mainly on sessions that talked about web2.0, social networking and mobile. Here are some videos worth watching of these sessions:

Is web2.0 sustainable?

Social Networks: where are they taking us?

Web2.0 and beyond: what is the business reality?

Sessions I missed but are worth checking out as well on video are:

The Story of the Ribbon

Touch me: what’s next for interfaces

Beneath the Surface

Developing with the Windows Live Platform

There are a ton of sessions I still have to go through, all of them are up on http://sessions.visitmix.com/ for your viewing as well (requires Silverlight plugin).

That evening we joined the European MIX08 guests at the European party in Club 40/40 together with David Armano and his wife. The party was good fun and some magic but no pictures to share from this one… what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas I guess

GUY KAWASAKI: Okay. Another not so softball, what’s the deal with Vista? Seriously, I mean

STEVE BALLMER: Seriously?

GUY KAWASAKI: Yes, I mean seriously. Shall I say I read a very funny blog

STEVE BALLMER: Vista, the second most popular operating system in history?

GUY KAWASAKI: The one that you get no choice in getting. (Laughter.)

STEVE BALLMER: Let me see that thing, have you got Vista on that thing?

GUY KAWASAKI: No, why would I do that?

STEVE BALLMER: See, you have a choice. You are one of the few who made the wrong choise.

GUY KAWASAKI: What if you like to use a computer like this, you can just take out of a little envelope and

STEVE BALLMER: This is heavier than my PC. (Laughter.) It’s true. That thing is heavier than the Toshiba I carry.

GUY KAWASAKI: But, this is more powerful than the Toshiba.

STEVE BALLMER: No, that thing is missing half the features of a PC. Where is your DVD drive, let me look for that. (Laughter and applause.) I’ll have a bake-off with my Tosh versus that thing backstage.

GUY KAWASAKI: Yes, but DVDs are passe.

STEVE BALLMER: Tell that to your kids on a long flight, pal.

GUY KAWASAKI: I can’t help it if you don’t sell any movies. What do you want from us. Where were we, you kind of threw me here. I thought I was

STEVE BALLMER: It’s a two-way street.

GUY KAWASAKI: I thought I was controlling this.

STEVE BALLMER: You are.

GUY KAWASAKI: I’m never going to invite you back to MIX. (Laughter and applause.)

Microsoft is fighting a war — one in which it’s being attacked on three sides. Cut through the

Microsoft is fighting a war — one in which it’s being attacked on three sides. Cut through the flurry of announcements out of its Mix conference this week and what emerges is the Redmond giant’s three-pronged defense strategy: consumer, enterprise and developer. Only by understanding the battles Microsoft is fighting does it become clear where the company is headed. So we’ve broken it out for you here.

The consumer attack

The front: Desktops, handsets and consoles. Flanked by Apple’s cooler desktops and devices, Google’s insight into users, and the Nintendo/Sony console world, Microsoft is struggling. Windows Mobile isn’t a consumer handset like the iPhone. Live hasn’t really taken off. Vista flopped, with the company embroiled in claims that it overstated the number of machines on which it would run. And the Xbox, despite its success, has an alarmingly high recall rate. Perhaps most frighteningly, it’s becoming clear that when it comes to consumers, advertising is paying for it all (what Chris Anderson calls the “freeconomy”). But Microsoft isn’t plugged into that ad stream.

The defense: One OS to rule them all. Users have dozens of devices, and Ray Ozzie wants them all to work seamlessly together. Expect Danger, Zune, Xbox and Vista to share and synchronize automatically. Carriers and labels will love it. Consumers will settle for it. And once they’ve got a central identity, they’ll be able to carry their desktop applications (with varying degrees of functionality) from their desk, to their car, to their hip, to their sofa.

But how to pay for it? What Microsoft needs is an ad network like Yahoo, and media formats like Silverlight that lure advertisers. Ballmer’s clearly not resistant to the concept of advertising: In an on-stage Mix interview with Guy Kawasaki, he performed a mini-monkeyboy dance, only to demand of the person who had requested the jig: “If your buddy behind you just gave you a buck, I want 50 cents.” He knows where his consumer revenue’s coming from down the road.

The enterprise attack

The front: On-demand apps and a mobile workforce. Salesforce.com has gone from a turnkey contact manager to a full-fledged ecosystem for developing CRM applications. Amazon lets hundreds of upstarts build project planning, accounting, word processing, messaging and more — apps that traditionally filled Microsoft’s coffers. Standards like OpenID give interoperability without buying a suite. As companies realize the inevitability of on-demand computing, Microsoft has to completely change its business model. And on the mobile front, Windows Mobile can’t hold a candle to the BlackBerry.

The defense: Connected productivity and an easy move into the cloud. Expect the firm to retrench on mobility. Exchange still holds the bulk of business users’ internal relationships. More and more, it’s focusing on workflows and business process. Moving those processes between the enterprise server, the mobile device and the web — seamlessly — would be a big win that companies will love. With Danger, Windows Mobile can stop being a tweener and go after Research In Motion. And Microsoft’s asp.net architecture is still the easiest way for its legions of developers to build online applications.

When companies are ready to port their data centers into the cloud, Microsoft will make the transition as painless and transparent as possible using Windows Live Storage, SQL Server Data Center Services, and other services with codenames like CloudDB, Horizon, and Live Core that execs are still tight-lipped about.

The developer attack

The front: Open source, web apps and video. The thing Bill’s always done right is focus on developers. He put in functions. He opened up APIs. He showered them with development resources. And it worked. But today, we have Sourceforge for snippets of code. Eclipse gives <del datetime="2008-03-09T15:57:51+00:00">Active</del>Visual Studio a run for its money. We built Web 2.0 with Flash, AJAX, Ruby, Python — the language of the web isn’t .net, and it hurts. When it comes to video, Microsoft’s Silverlight seduces content providers with tracking and ad support, but we’ve already built those things out of Flash ourselves. And Microsoft’s notoriously long release cycle for Longhorn impacted its ability to react to market changes.

The defense: New Lego. Remember old Lego, which only had a few pieces? You had to carefully build the front of a spaceship from thin rectangles and dozens of identical bricks. But new Lego is different. There’s a single piece for the front of the spaceship. And while old-school Lego types cry foul, now pretty much anyone can build a spaceship.

That’s Microsoft. New features in Internet Explorer 8, working in concert with the company’s web servers, will make it easy to drag-and-drop sex appeal into the application without needing much talent. And enterprise developers will embrace it, as they always do, because it’s easy. Things like Feedsync and Sliverlight will make it that way. Even the Popfly site makes anyone who can drag a mouse a coder, performance be damned. By breaking the software into services, there will be less delay between releases, which should fix the Longhorn drought.

How will the battle go?

Mix08 was an upbeat event. But read between the lines, and it’s clear that the company is bracing for a fight from several sides at once. Don’t write off Microsoft: We were here once before, when Netscape was going to put the company out of business. But Gates issued an edict, the company turned on a dime, and a few years later IE was the dominant web browser.

But you never want to fight a war on multiple fronts, and that’s what Microsoft faces in battles for consumers, enterprises and developers. If it survives, the Microsoft of tomorrow will be a very different company.

I was intending to write regularly about how things were going at Mix. I was even intending to keep a regular presence on Twitter and interact with the community (also to find out where good clubs were). I now regret opting out of adding the extended battery to my Dell laptop package. My laptop could just barely last a single session, and given we had 15 minutes between talks to do what we needed to do, I prioritised smoking (it’s a networking opportunity!) above charging my laptop. So for the second and third days of the conference I left my laptop in my hotel room and stuck with pen and paper.

It was actually a great decision too. I met dozens of people, simply because I was free to just wonder around, note things down, slip through crowds and get where I wanted to be. I wasn’t ruled by my Device and it’s need for the Mains. It was like leaving the kids with a babysitter. And I think took even better notes than I would have if I’d been typing.

On the whole I stuck with the Silverlight path during the conference – Building Rich Applications 1&2, User Controls, Data Applications etc etc. Also caught the Sharepoint talk on Friday (I was on company orders but it was actually pretty good), Silverlight & Analytics talk. I actually can’t remember what I attended last on friday, mainly because I was experiencing narcilepsy due to lack of sleep.

Right now I’m at the gate waiting to board my plane. I have a stack of cards from people who I need to contact, and notes to disseminate and blog about. I haven’t really had space in my head for the ‘business’ side of things so I need to get home and unwind before I can start making use of the information I’ve absorbed.

Needless to say I’ve had a friggin amazing time. I even saw Scott Guthrie walk past me at one stage and asked Steve Ballmer a question at the keynote. Pretty awesome.

More when I get back.

I was just reading Mano-a-mano with Steve Ballmer by Guy Kawasaki that had a video from the MIX08 conference held in Las Vegas from March 5th -7th. It is a conference for developers, designers and business professionals, or so the website says. The video was of the Keynote speaking with Guy Kawasaki as host, interviewing Steve Ballmer. Incredible. It was over an hour long, and I watched all of it. I think anyone who has the slightest interest in Microsoft vs. the world, then you should watch this.

One of the things that made this keynote so good, and why I watched most of it, is because of the bantering going back and forth from Kawasaki and Ballmer. Steve Ballmer is now the CEO of Microsoft and was one of the original Microsoft guys (starting in 1980), whereas Guy Kawasaki was one of the original Apple guys which leads to much playful banter. In some cases, it is absolutely hilarious, one of which Ballmer threw Kawasaki`s Mac AIR on the ground (timing in video is given later). I laughed nearly the whole time.

Here are some of the topics (and the times they played) that was discussed:

Yahoo potential merger @ 2:30

Google competitor @ 4:30

Microsoft is an underdog @ 7:18

Anti-trust @ 7:35

Apple (Ballmer gives Cudos) @ 7:48

Facebook @ 9:28

Microsofts millions @ 10:40

Receiving mass email (or not) @ about 15:00

Bill Gates leaving microsoft @ 16:45

Hiring at microsoft @ 18:40

Silverlight @ 24:35

Vista (dodges topic by throwing Kawasaki`s Mac AIR on the ground) @ 26:45

Microsoft losing focus @ 28.30

Firefox vs IE @ 32:40

I think anyone who is interested even slightly in Microsoft, or even if you hate Microsoft and want to see their views on Google and Apple, you should watch this video. It is long, but well worth it.

After watching over an hour worth of video, I could write for forever on this topic, but I guess I can only put so much. Maybe I`ll make another 10 posts all dealing with this video. Thats all for now.

Cheers,

David McKenna
