Music really is quite a private thing.  Your own personal tastes will never be exactly the same as the next person. Even if it’s really close between two people, I reckon there will be a least one other song you’ll prefer to their choice. Which is one reason why MP3 players are absolutely amazing. The ultimate mixed tape. A mix of your absolute favourite songs by various artists that can be updated as your tastes and moods change.

But MP3 players have been around for ages, we all know about them, so why mention it now? Well, we are now at the stage where because we can get exactly what we want, when we want, we’ve evolved our musical appreciation in a rather insular way. In some cases and our ‘Playlists’ will differ from person to person quite vastly, even if a group of you are friends and generally in to the same sort of things. I mean everyone has their guilty pleasures don’t they. You might find for example, upon browsing through a friends playlist, who you thought was into the same indie music you were, ‘Back for good’ by Take That. It can happen.

Anyway this leads me to what I’m driving at and it’s something I’ve not only observed and felt awkward about it. It’s something I’ve been guilty of myself. It can happen at a gathering (or party if you prefer) or in the car, or any place a group of people can be and have access to put their MP3 player on loud speaker.  And it’s this; your tastes are no longer anyone else’s.

There you are saying; check out these tunes guys, they’re amazing. You put them on and most of the people will not have heard them before. And you’re there like an absolute twat acting like you’re about to orgasm saying, oh wait for this bit..hang on..hang on..here it comes. Oh yes what a riff, or lyric or whatever.

So you look around at all your friends, anticipating astonished faces with mouths hanging so wide, an airbus could fly into it. Instead you see polite smiles, raised eye brows and slowly nodding heads that you realise is the same look you once gave to child who categorically told you that he was a wizard and he’d just got back from kicking Harry Potter’s arse.

Why don’t they absolutely worship it like you do? It’s because you’ve saturated that monkey music all over yourself. Total emersion every day, you go to work listening and come back listening. If only the people around you had done the same, the fools.

Who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky and one other person really does like. With me, however, after an hour’s journey and my mixed tape playing in the car, politeness went out the window and I was told to turn that crap off before it went out too.

I disagree, CD’s are wonderful! There like this wonderful back up to our over digitalized world. They’re something tangible, hold able, and I think they’re absolutely wonderful for road trips. I make mixed CD’s for any and every mood and taste, sometimes I’ll mix things up a lot and jump from songs by Frank Sinatra to songs by Skrillex, or sometimes I’ll go with a theme.

For this mix I went with a theme. This mix is called ‘Some Time Ago’ because it combines some of my favorite songs from the decades before I was born.
