I was going to host a pot-luck party in October but with everyone’s different schedules, the party kept on being pushed back and back until I got tired of changing the date so I canceled it. Then at the beginning of this month, two of my friends asked for me to cook because one of them never tried anything that I’ve made so I decided to have a little dinner party to celebrate them finishing their finals for this semester. It was going to be a vegetarian night because both of them are Hindu.

It was supposed to be on December 13 but it was rescheduled, AGAIN. It’s like the world is telling me not to cook. Then one of my friends got sick so I just abandoned everything! It’s good that I didn’t go buy most of the ingredients or else I would have had a vegetarian week and would have been very snappy at everyone.

I think the place where I saw this looks way better than mine. Mine is messy with too many colors and honestly, I did not know how to eat this so I used my fingers.

Ingredients:

• Fresh raspberries
• Large pears
• 0.5 cup pecans
• 0.5 lb mixed greens
• Raspberry vinaigrette
• Large leaves for decorating (optional)
• Honey

Instructions:

1. Cut pears into thirds or quarters
2. Mix the other ingredients and then layer them into each section
3. Drizzle with honey

2009 was a year of changes and Solid State Logic got it perfectly. More than ever, the British manufacturer wanted to perpetuate its leading position in the professional analog mixer market launching a new product, the most refined of all: the X-Desk, a compact, 16-channel, analog line mixer developed for project studios. This human-sized mixer aroused our curiosity…

Even though acronyms have changed a lot with the advent of the internet, SSL (simply think “Oxford, England”…) still remains a synonym for professional quality to any audio enthusiast – both for sound and technical aspects. After many years of having become one of the indispensable products in professional studios all over the world, the British manufacturer started to show interest in modular solutions with its X-Rack Series, allowing (almost) anybody to enjoy their legendary sound if they had the need and the budget. At first sight, the mixer’s extremely compact size (17.1″ x 12.2″ x 4.7″) will surprise you, considering it’s an SSL, even if the Matrix had already started with the trend… You can now have the Oxford sound directly in your home studio, even if it’s more a home than a studio – like in this review!

Nevertheless, just look at the mixer and you’ll know it’s a real SSL. First of all, you’ll notice the typical sturdy manufacturing. Reliable production, clear silkscreen and a well thought-out design that makes the workflow easier. The mixer has the same 25-pin D-Sub connectors you’ll find on most professional products. Moreover, all ten D-Sub sockets on the rear panel are recessed, ensuring an easy integration of the X-Desk in your production environment. No connector will be outwardly exposed, therefore reducing the space needed to set up the mixer. We all know that connectors can take up a lot of space and SSL dealt with that issue properly.

The small mixer looks nice and it promises a lot of flexibility and ease of use. But what about the technology inside?  Let’s take a closer look…

Sound One recently provided sound editorial and mixing services for the new Columbia Pictures release, Did You Hear About the Morgans? Sound One’s Michael Barry and Robert Hein served  as Re-Recording Mixer and Supervising Sound Editor, respectively, on the comedy which stars Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker as wealthy New Yorkers who are resettled in Wyoming as part of a witness protection program. 

Barry has mixed such films as Mamma Mia!, Michael Clayton and Music and Lyrics.   Hein’s previous credits include Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Saphire, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and the upcoming Mikael Håfström film, Shanghai.

I recently took two days off to record a new song of mine (yay!). I really enjoyed being able to spend so much time with my music again, so the second day I got really comfortable, opened a bottle of wine and went for the finishing touches. Unfortunately, i finished the wine before i finished the song, so listening to it the next day involved a bit of hope that everything might have gone well. In my oppinion, it did, but still…

• The lyrics for the refrain are grammatically wrong. Embarrassing.
• The song is not that loud (decibel-wise), but still completely overcompressed. I regard this as quite an achievement.
• The bass fills during the second verse might have been a good idea in general, but putting some thoughts into them before recording and not using the first improvisation right away would have been an even better idea.
• The voice is also a first take without any cuts. That worked fine, though. Just wanted to point this out…
• The snare is way too quiet. And I definitely should have used a different sample with a more metallic ring to it.
• Drumfills in the refrain are… well, let’s face it, really bad.

Sounds like I should do over. But, on the other hand, if I wrote the perfect song today, what am I going to do tomorrow?

Other alternative careers to solve the problem, leave and analytical skills are questioned by the managers, bankers, or school administrators.

Through the many useful skills that youto get to law school not to make about career opportunities. The course prepares you in a number of different settings to work, often not directly linked to legal settings. Even if you practice law for a few years and decide that a career in law is not for you – many alternative career options are available. Keep your eyes open and to be proactive.

You know at Whole Foods the really good nibble food are always so expensive! Roasted nuts for $22/pound, and chocolate truffles for $2.99 each, etc… I woke up this morning feeling “toasty”. It’s because I left the heater on at a higher setting than what I usually set it to.

[100% organic]

Ingredients:

• 1 egg, white only
• 1 tsp water
• 1 cup pecans
• 0.25 tsp salt
• 3 TB white sugar
• 3 TB brown sugar
• 1 TB ground cinnamon

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 275ºF
2. Beat the egg white and water until foamy
3. Add the pecans, and shake until well coated
4. Mix the brown sugar, white sugar, salt, and cinnamon in another bowl, then sprinkle over the nuts
5. Shake/mix well
6. Spread the pecans over a pan with parchment paper
7. Roast the pecans for 1 hour, flipping every 20 minutes

Note: you can use almonds, walnuts, and any kind of nut. I’m going to make it with mixed nuts and dried fruit next time – just to try.

One of the changes that will take place on the site, is that the blog will shift gears to a more traditional magazine style. Instead of random publishing blog posts of media, music and generally anything that I’m working on, I will concentrate on recording, mixing and mastering topics from a New York City D.I.Y. audio-guy’s perspective.

Following a recent resurgence in Japan ex Bay City Roller Pat McGlynn has had all his early solo albums re-released on SONY/BMG in early 2009. We worked together along with his wife and vocalist Janine Bond in late 2008 on four new songs at the Offbeat studio for Pat McGlynn’s STORM earlier this year.

I wrote a track for him in March entitled I Wanna Be In Your Cult.  The track is currently getting lots of airplay in Japan and we are hoping for a hit record. All the tracks are featured on the Offbeat homepage mp3 player. Pat is great to work with and is a true music lover. He’s a gifted guitarist and songwriter

I met Pat back in 1984 when I was working on my solo album under the name ZED with vocalist Kirsty Anderson… I co-wrote two tracks with him and Les McKeown on the BAY CITY ROLLERS hit album Breakout. The title track was originally recorded at Jon Turner’s Palladium studio and also featured Anne Turner on backing vocals. and another on the album called You’ll Find Out was recorded at Wilf Smarties Planet Studios. Wiolf was the guy who discovered Wet Wet Wet and he produced their first hit single “Wishing I Was Lucky’. Apart from being a studio boffin Wilf was instrumental in my training as a recording engineer, giving me a break to work at Planet from 1983 until 1985.

Powderfinger’s new album “Golden Rule”, released last month, debuted at the top of the charts. The album was recorded at 301 Byron, mixed at 301 Sydney, and mastered by our very own Leon Zervos.

Philadelphia Grand Jury (Mastered by Steve Smart) took home an AIR award for Best Single/EP for “Going to the Casino” – Big congrats guys!

Washington’s single “How to tame Lions” ranked at #12 a couple months back, which was mastered by Steve Smart. She has also just won this year’s Vanda & Young songwriting competition – another big congratulations!

Eskimo Joe’s Album Insulla hit #1 on the Album charts this year in June – this album was recorded at Studios 301 in Byron Bay with Producer Gil Norton.

This is my fourth tiramisu post and my own creation. I mashed up 60 lady fingers with 1 cup of dark coffee and 0.25 cup coffee liqueur using a potato masher. I then scooped the lady fingers paste into the bottom of a glass and then topped with the mascarpone mixture. For a finishing touch, I stuck one lady finger into the center of the glass and then put them into the freezer.

After they are frozen, dust with some cocoa powder and let it sit for 2-3 minutes before eating with a spoon.
