Horo adjudicó su triunfo a su astucia y sus años

Horo ganó, pero el caudal de votos emitidos disminuyó en comparación con los recientes grupos. Antes de recibir este resultado, había supuesto que quizá la noticia de Saimoe recién había comenzado a correr entre los foreros y lectores de blogs, y el reciente incremento en los números se debía a este renovado interés. Ahora debemos buscar una nueva explicación y probablemente los números altos de jornadas anteriores se debían, primero, a la presencia de personajes de Saki y K-ON!, los principales beneficiarios de la renovación en el certamen, y la conjunción de verdaderos pesos pesados en grupos “de la muerte”. Horo tuvo, en comparación a Yui, Ami o Kyou, un grupo relativamente más sencillo donde las principales amenazas eran Rika Furude, la campeona de 2007; Ushio, que arribaba con muchas expectativas a raíz de su participación en AFTER STORY; y Miyako, que había cumplido una excelente campaña en 2008, eliminando a Rena. El resto peleaba la clasificación. Al final, Rika logró remontar un proceso adverso e imponerse a Ushio en las últimas tres horas de sufragio, una verdadera cabalgata de campeona para consolidarse en el rush final luego de varios momentos de tensión. Ryou tampoco pudo mantener su cuarto lugar y, como parece ocurrirle en su serie, la superaron en menos de noventa minutos. Ceder posiciones de forma clamorosa le costó a CLANNAD la posibilidad de marcar un récord hasta ahora no presenciado: Kouko relegó el decimosegundo lugar, que cayó en manos de Cal Devens de Requiem of the Phantom, aunque el panorama de Key/Kyoto, con once casillas aseguradas en el torneo principal, pinta más optimista que el tibio rendimiento exhibido hasta ahora.

You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one, porque esta fecha de eliminatorias apuesto todo mi capital a Miyako, el mejor personaje cómico femenino de la reciente década. Ninguna tan creativa, vital, optimista, espontánea y talentosa, capaz de dibujar las líneas de Nazca con cal para pistas de atletismo, de imitar el estilo de Amadeo Modigliani o crear una corto de animación en su libro de ciencias naturales (además de prometer su primer largometraje usando el diccionario). Entre sus proezas artísticas se cuentan esculpir moais en la nieve o dibujar conejos abstractos o empleando el action painting. Miyako vive en constante estado de Arte, la palabra “plan” no forma parte de su vocabulario y jamás dudará en alojar en su humilde hogar de estudiante a algún gato callejero. Burlándose de las dietas de Hiro, sintiéndose orgullosa de su pobreza, porque le permite vivir en un apartamento de precio rebajado, o resolviendo crucigramas para ganarse un premio de mariscos y crustáceos, la gran faceta de Miyako es su incansable sonrisa que ilumina a su grupo de amigas y vecinas. Para conquistar el primer lugar de este grupo, deberá imponerse a la última ficha de peso de Higurashi y campeona de Saimoe 2007, Rika Furude, y al Imperio KyoAni representado por Ushio Okazaki, la novísima estrella de CLANNAD y última miembro notable de la dinastía moe Furakawa. Contendora de lujo y campeona en Corea, Horo, la loba sabia, debería tentar también el podio, pues quedar fuera de las cinco primeras sería un fracaso como su eliminación el año pasado ante Tamaki. Entre las novatas que seguro alcanzarán una plaza directa al torneo principal, Akiha Shishidou será bolo fijo, aunque ignoramos la amplitud de su caudal electoral. Finalmente, una oportunidad dorada se abre para que Kanade Sakurai, de Candy boy, esa ONA con tintes de twincest yuri, supere su actuación de 2008, cuando no sobrevivió el repechaje y alcance la merecida clasificación. Based on the life of pioneering manga artist Shinichi Abe, Miyako Asagaya Kibun brilliantly illustrates and illuminates the madness and excess of its subject and his times. In the 1970s Abe (played with crazy passion by Kenji Mizuhashi) published expressionistic and outré comics based on his own life in the groundbreaking Garo magazine. His work was stylistically and conceptually ahead of its time. It was also driven by his own problems with mental illness and alcoholism. Miyoko Asagaya Kibun seamlessly crossfades between the drawn image and the re-enactment, between obsession and monstrousness, showing a devastated and devastating life, all the while keeping an unsentimental eye on a what brings an artist to greatness and finally off the edge. Yoshifumi Tsubota’s film debut highlights a new talent with a great grasp of quirky storytelling and visual style. The cast, rounded out by Marie Machida and Shoichi Honda are inspired. A particularly touching denouement, after the madness and decline of Abe, is a brief shot of the real Abe, smiling at the camera – as the credits roll.

A word on Miyako Old-Fashioned Ice Cream on Fillmore.  On our Ice Cream Adventure surrounding the International Film Festival at the Kabuki, Erica and I almost turned up our noses at this one. In the window of Miyako, they advertise Dreyer’s. And we can get Dreyer’s in a carton, right? But wait! There’s more!

They also have a bunch of “Exotic Flavors” that you aren’t usually going to find in the Dreyer’s section at the grocery store. The man behind the counter was super understanding as we analyzed our way through some of the more fascinating options. He explained that Lucuma was a type of Peruvian fruit, pumpkin-like in texture and flavor. We were both sold based on that sample — it really is quite pumpkin-y without being too sweet or spicy like pumpkin pie. Highly recommended. Then, Erica went for New York Cherry as her second scoop. We both marveled at the alarmingly pink but surprisingly realistic ice cream. I tried to figure out what else might pair well with the Lucuma ice cream and settled on the Mexican Chocolate. Now this is everything ice cream should be. It was rich and chocolatey with hints of cinnamon that gave it just that little extra oomph. We were impressed.

These days, what with the popularity of Yelp and everything, I guess a lot of people are much more in tune to customers taking photos in their shops. On this occasion, the guy who served us actually offered to help us out!! He noticed me trying to take my lefthand corner ice cream close-up and proceeded to take multiple shots of Erica and I together, inside, outside, wherever we wanted. He recognized the opportunity as good advertising, and I suppose he knew it would make us happy too. Now that I think of it, this was the second store owner to come out and help us take our silly touristy photos. And there you have it — Paisley and Rose causing a small scene wherever we go. But it was another pleasant series of events — we were able to take a spin around Japantown with our ice cream, pause to eat dinner at Extreme Pizza, and wind up right back at the Kabuki in time for our movie. But mostly I’m just glad we didn’t underestimate Miyako, because as far as our Kabuki outings are concerned, this is the kind of treat that might just have to go hand in hand with every movie we see.

This is all the loot from the two farmer’s markets that I went to on Saturday.
Pictured: assorted salad greens from a community garden in 5th ward (the booth was run by high school kids), 3 sweet potatoes, local mozzarella cheese, a bag of strawberries (greenhouse?! they were delicio), a bacon scone, 1 palmier pastry, 1 meringue cookie (vanilla), 1 weird “crepe” pastry, grass-fed beef sausage from Waller, organic vegetarian sushi w/sauce, and a spinach paratha (indian food thing).

I LOVE THE FARMER’S MARKET!!!!! I am going back next weekend to both.
I almost bought an orchid but I have to plan out a spot for it in my house first. (the cats love plants- must plan accordingly!)

I had never had vegetarian sushi before- but honestly the sauce was the best part. I would probably drink it by itself if I could.
The spinach paratha was fab but it gave me a stomach ache. I officially give up on Indian spices. My stomach can’t hang!!!!

Other weekend highlights?:
-I finally tried Ginza (sushi place) and it was superb. If it wasnt outside the loop- I would practically live there from now on.
-Went to Crave on Saturday night at 11pm- all rolls are 25% after a certain hour or something? sushi was a 7 on a 10 scale but the atmosphere was typical loud tacky midtownness. i would only go here because it’s open until 4am.
-Miyako on Sunday- still the best sushi value on the weekends- Oishii is a close second but it’s closed on Sundays.

I barely remember what I did this weekend.

Friday- Seabass cooked up some bratwurst and spaetzle.
If anything else happened, I haven’t a clue about it. I probably passed out from the bratwurst bricking down into my stomach.

Saturday:
I went to see He’s Just Not That Into You” with Tiffany.
WTF WAS THIS MOVIE?!?!
lots of pretty people but it was generally just a terrible movie. good thing we only paid 4 bucks.
Also there was some random dude sitting behind us, alone, and laughing at the most UNfunny times. Bizarre.

After Tiffany time, I eventually went shopping for a million years to basically replenish my wardrobe.
I have admittedly been in total denial about my weight gain so I figured I would just lose the weight and then buy all new clothes…
Well I am sick of dressing overly casual at work- and I really do not own any sophisticated clothing so I bit the bullet and shopped for “teacher clothes” as Crystal used to call them.
Oh and be proud of me because I totally bought a pair of pants.
If you know me, you probably have noticed that I rarely (if ever) wear pants.
baby steps.

After dropping major moneys I met up with the seabass and went to Miyako.
$5 sushi rolls = heaven.
Their Philadelphia roll is probably the best that I’ve had so far in my sushi obsession journey.
Afterward I bought a pair of Clark’s at Marshalls. I also bought a purse only because it is turquoise.

-Oh and at some point I made some Kurt Vonnegut face earrings. Pics later.

Sunday:
I studied almost all day- at some point I went to Lauren’s for the girl party (aka taco party).
I stayed for exactly 3 beers and then tried to study while tipsy. It didn’t really work out too well.
Then I just watched the grammys while playing fetch with Buffy Champagne.

Now I’m at work trying to think of anything to do other than study.

Today:
I tried Soma for lunch. I say a thumbs down for price and for everything except for the phoenix roll. it was AIIIIGHT.
