My adventures on the Great Western railway so far have only taken me as far as Reading for work but

My adventures on the Great Western railway so far have only taken me as far as Reading for work but never beyond. This all changed just before Christmas, which was spent in North Cornwall. To get to North Cornwall you have to take a First Great Western train to Exeter from London Paddington then get a bus or car.

Having not travelled on the Great Western properly before I was rather excited, added to this, travelling during the day for once meant I was going to be able to appreciate the beautiful scenery on this wonderful route Westwards. This all changed rapidly when the departure time crept closer, having managed to temporarily killed my BlackBerry with coffee I reverted to using a public telephone. At this point the platform was called, for the once an hour Penzance train. About half the people on the concourse started rushing towards Platform 5 to embark.

Quickly getting off the phone I to made my way swiftly onto Platform 5 where I was greeted with a scene of 20-30 people trying to get on at each coach door. This was not too much of a concern as HST (High Speed Trains) only have doors at the end of each coach so it naturally takes time for people to move along. However, when the coach is already full panic starts to set in that we may not all get on. No fear though as I found space at the front door to one of the 1st class carriages.

Once I squeezed on with my suitcase and bags I realised that I was not going to be able to move any further into the carriage (not that I had a 1st class ticket mind). So resided myself to standing in the vestibule for the journey. The other passengers around me also were in the same situation and with the knowledge of having to stand for the next several hours we set off.

Now it is well known that the British do not ‘do’ conversation with strangers, but this all changes when you are all crammed into the end of a Mk3 railway coach. After 45 minutes of complaining (and discussing the large amount of snow fall around Reading – the weather kept us going for miles!) one of my fellow passengers suddenly suggested we play a game. This is when our hour long game of ‘I Spy’ began! Slowly but surely we got all dozen or so people in our area playing and the game only stopped at Taunton when people had to get off.

So what did I get out from this journey when arriving in Exeter? Not the beautiful scenery that I had promised myself, nor the enjoyment of a 2 hour plus train ride in a comfy seat, but instead I made a few new friends and learned about everything you can find at the end of a Mk3 HST carriage! Well worth my £20 advance ticket.

Unfortunately, it’s still “only” FWD, which, depending on your perspective, could be either a good (keeps cost and weight down) or a bad (AWD potentially more fun) thing. It doesn’t seem to matter to the automotive commentariat on either side of the pond, who like it just the same.

Of course, it’s all a moot point, anyway, because it’s not coming to the States.

“Choose Your Destiny! Flawless Victory! Finish Him!” Sejam bem vindos meros mortais que

“Choose Your Destiny!
Flawless Victory!
Finish Him!”

Demais atores também merecem destaque, dentre eles, Lia Montelongo (Sindel e Sareena), John Parrish (Jax Briggs) e Richard Divizio (Kano, Baraka, Kabal, Quan Chi).

Agora é hora do Torneio Mortal Kombat! Choose Your Destiny…

Concorrente 1 – Sexy Jade

This place was simply breath taking, inside a large portal span building the half the width of a football field and as long as one, this place had almost evey rim you could think of plus more.

50m x 100m long, the whole top floor was wheels as far as the eye could see, everything from 10” to 20”+, with or without tyres, the popular, the common, the stock, the rare and the bazaar rims were on display.

My favourite sizes’s were all there, Heaps of SSR’s, Works, & Enkei’s with all the different variations of the rims as well.

Like a kid in a Candy store I wandered the place looking at all the epic rims. Down side to this place is all the rims are priced to what there worth, up side is if you ever need a particular rim in a certain size and offset this is where to go.
and while were on 5 stud, XR5’s anyone…

Some 10” rims on display a dream for those with 70’s kei cars looking for that kyuusha look

Some more rims just sitting around, widened steelies which weighted a tonne, SSR mesh and infront of them Works?

Check the Info tag on the SSR mesh

Sakura, Starshark, Xciting X1

But this place was more than just rims and tyres. Down stairs they had 2nd hand after market parts for a lot of the popular Japanese cars. An audio department, steering wheels, exhaust systems, and other random parts littered the Iles
A few nardies lined the wall.

Zorst anyone?

lastly I think a pretty noteworthy find, this HKS supercharger kit for the Toyota 1NZ-FE, Cant remember what car it was for but this motor’s commonly found in the Echo, yaris, etc…

If your ever lucky enough to go there here’s something to remember, not open Tuesday or Wednesday but open every other day till 12pm (yes even on Sundays). When you find something you want to buy, you have to go back down stairs and apply for it, they go and get it (even if its one rim on the shelf) bring it back and you enter into some sort of contract to buy… rather strange but that’s how they work.

Anyway… that’s all from bigwheel
Thanks for reading

Evolution. Changing times call for changing tools. That’s why Pioneer’s new multi-format player is the natural selection for the next generation of DJs. It’s been 15 years since the genesis of Pioneer’s first CDJ deck, which led to the world-beating CDJ-1000 series. Now it’s time for something completely new. Introducing a major leap forward for the club standard CDJ series: the CDJ-2000 – Pioneer’s new professional player for the digital age.

The CDJ-2000 fizzes with fresh DNA and can play music from multiple sources, including CD, DVD, USB storage devices and SD memory cards. It also comes with the revolutionary music database management software for DJs: rekordbox™. Based on Pioneer’s ‘Prepare & Perform’ concept, rekordbox™ works (for both Mac and PC) like the leading music database management software, but is more creative and more DJ-friendly. rekordbox™ allows DJs to prepare more before their performance and opens a door to tools such as Hot Cue Banks and Quantize, for perfectly synced loops every time. DJs can then export data to a USB or SD device to access vast libraries of music files and perform live – without the need for extra equipment or any inconvenient rewiring in the club. No need to burn CDs, simply take your USB device to the club, plug in to the CDJ and play. Through the industry-first Pro DJ Link, music files and database data on one single USB or SD device can be shared simultaneously by up to four players connected via LAN (local area network) cable. Plus, the data history of each DJ set is automatically saved and can be made into a playlist that can be loaded back into rekordbox™. Another key facet of the CDJ-2000 is its advanced HID (human interface device) and MIDI capabilities for native control of DVS (digital vinyl systems) via USB. What’s more, it achieves Pioneer’s highest sound quality to date through an improved audio output circuit, a new audiophile-pleasing Wolfson DAC processor, and a built-in 24-bit/48 kHz sound card.

Naturally, the CDJ-2000’s layout is related to its robust, reliable predecessor, the CDJ-1000MK3. However, although it fits easily into the MK3’s footprint, it ramps up performance with the largest (6.1-inch) clearest full-colour screen in the business. Below the screen is an industry-first waveform Needle Search™/Needle Drop ribbon, so that all the convenience of direct file browsing can now be found in an intuitive hardware format. Add to these features a highly evolved illuminated Jog wheel, and an overall enhanced design, complete with carry handles and Kensington lock, and you have the ideal digital innovation for total performance and seamless synchronisation.

‘DJing is increasingly about the endless creative possibilities opened up by digital Darwinism. Natural selection favours superior performance and those who can better streamline processes to channel the best of the software and hardware worlds. It really is all about the survival of the fittest. This new hybrid species of multi-player, our CDJ-2000, is thus an adaptable digital solution for the evolving needs of leading DJs,’ comments Mark Grotefeld, Head of Marketing (Pro DJ), Pioneer Europe.

CDJ-2000 KEY FEATURES
Fully compatible with a wide range of media formats
Besides regular audio CDs (and MP3 data CDs and DVDs) the CDJs can play music files that have been copied to SD memory cards and USB storage devices, such as flash memory and hard disk drives. Compatible file formats are MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF (16/24-bit). Files on Tonium’s Pacemaker*1 can also be played when connected as a storage device via USB.

rekordbox™ database management software for DJs introduces the ‘Prepare & Perform’ concept
The idea behind ‘Prepare & Perform’ is that rekordbox™ works in harmony with DJs, allowing them to analyse, arrange, edit and export their music and data to digital media before their performance. Put simply, rekordbox™ offers an alternative to taking a laptop to the club. Not only does it function like a database for DJs (and is compatible with the leading music database management software through a bridge feature) but it also offers many more creative opportunities. DJs can prepare cue points, loops and Hot Cues in advance of their show. They can manage music files by editing tag information and artwork, while rekordbox™ analyses such track information as BPM and wave data. DJs can also edit beatgrids, which utilise the CDJ-2000’s new Quantize performance features, so, as an option, all cue points and loops can be set perfectly on-beat every time. In addition, users can create, edit and manage playlists in rekordbox™ and the CDJ-2000 creates a history playlist on your storage device of every track played for review when you next sync with rekordbox™.

You will need: A 3 pin cable release for Canon cameras (some consumer models use a different plug) A

You will need:
A 3 pin cable release for Canon cameras (some consumer models use a different plug)
A miniphone (AKA mono audio) plug
Some wire depending on how long you want the cable to be.
A soldering iron and flux
Heat shrink tubing to make it all pretty and keep water out
A hairdryer to shrink the tubing
Some work clips are helpful for holding little parts
A work surface that won’t be damaged or lit on fire by the soldering iron.

A store-bought cable release (to cut up for parts) and a miniphone connector

To start, get a hold of some kind of Canon 3 pin cable release. You can use a real Canon cable release (expensive) or a cheap Chinese knockoff. I imagine it’s possible to make your own 3 pin connector but I have no idea how to make a good one.

Inside the cable release switch: Notice the 3 wires.

Next open it up or cut off the switch part and you will be left with 3 wires. Usually it will be two wires and a braided shield (the third wire), but in my pictures you will see that for my Chinese switch it happened to be 3 separate wires. Firing the camera with the cable release is a really simple operation. If you hold the wires in your hand and touch the red and the white wire together, the camera will fire. No external power required.

Since the Pocket Wizard jack is really a mini mono-audio plug (aka miniphone), you can buy these for less than a dollar at audio parts stores. A stereo plug (like for a set of walkman headphones) may work, but I have never tried. Or you could buy a single earpiece (like for a cheap mono AM radio) and just cut the earphone off. It is best to use an L-shaped plug, so it doesn’t interfere with the Pocket Wizard antenna, but straight seems to work fine too.

The miniphone plug not yet assembled

You’ll notice that you’ve got 3 wires for the Canon cable release, and only two contacts on the mono-audio. The trick is to combine 2 of the cable release wires by wrapping them together to end up with 2 wires total that you solder to the miniphone. It matters which you wrap together, but you will have to use trial and error to get it right. In the case of the Canon I believe you wrap the braided shield around the red wire.

The braided shield actually activates the “half-button press” (AKA pre-release) on the Canon camera. If you wrap it around the correct wire (and you have your Canon set up to activate AF with a half-button press) the Canon will constantly be auto-focusing unless you turn off AF on the lens. There may be situations when you want this, or others when do not want this behavior. This also has the side effect of keeping the camera awake, as if you had your finger pressing lightly on the shutter button.

If you wrap the shield around the other wire (white), the shield will have no effect and the camera won’t auto focus. If you wrap the two non-shield wires together the camera will probably fire like crazy or do nothing. Personally, I think I have all my cables to be in pre-release mode, but I have my AF mapped to a thumb-button (not the shutter button) so it has no effect on my cameras.

Wrap your wires and test your cable BEFORE you solder anything. Once you’ve got it working THEN solder. Now that you’ve soldered it you’ll realize that you’ve forgotten to slide on your heat-shrink tubing and the audio jack’s plastic sleeve before you did that. Now cut everything apart and repeat as necessary until you’ve got a working, completed cable.

Just a hint, but keep your solders on the audio jack as small and clean as possible. There’s not much space in the plastic sleeve and if it gets squeezed too much it might short and not work. Don’t worry about shorts because the voltage 3.3V is too small to damage anything. It just won’t work. As with my Chinese cable release, there is some variation in the wiring. Test to see what works with your particular setup.

Also, I like to make all my cables, strobe hotshoes, foot pedals, finger switches, etc. terminate in miniphone jacks. That way, with cheap miniphone female-female adaptors I can plug anything into anything and bridge long distances with cheap wire.

Good luck.

Yesterday Carl Taylor and Ben Chandler came down to G-werks. This was good and bad. Kind of in that

Yesterday Carl Taylor and Ben Chandler came down to G-werks. This was good and bad. Kind of in that order! Carlos, along with his now legendary truck and trailer, had been enlisted to help out Ben who was, to be fair, in a bit of a pickle. We’ll explain why in a minute, but first, about the car. A couple of months ago Chandler started to put together a Bosozoku inspired Mk3 Golf project. Not sure what Bosozoku is? Then hit it up in Google image search and prepare to have your eyes blown outta their sockets!

The original car was a 1.4-litre, 5-door, CL model, which the fool had started to convert to VR6 power… himself! To save a little time here, lets just say that Chandler shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near spanners! We know this because he arrived yesterday with a motor-less 5-door Mk3 on Carl’s trailer and a massive jigsaw puzzle of VR6 bits and pieces. So as we write this at G-werks’ HQ, the big Bosozoku jigsaw puzzle is beginning to take shape.

When will the car be finished? Who knows…
One thing’s for sure, though, it’s gonna be insane.

By now, you know that I can be somewhat excitable, and when I get excited, I tend to bombard you wit

By now, you know that I can be somewhat excitable, and when I get excited, I tend to bombard you with the same information ad nauseum (how many times have I linked to my own post about The School?). And when I get really excited, I become preoccupied and forget to do important things, like a #faibw recap. Get over it. This is better. [Begin tale of serendipitous googling]

On Monday, I was doing some research for my Splashdown entry (did you all download your free albums, albums plural?!), trying to figure out if Melissa Kaplan, the former lead singer of Splashdown, was still performing around L.A. as Universal Hall Pass. Google lied–sort of. This was the other Melissa Kaplan (not Melissa Kaplan the world-famous herpetologist and author of Iguanas for Dummies, heretofore referred to as MK3). But its ok, because she likes Splashdown and Universal Hall Pass and she capitalizes and punctuates her emails. Also, she is in a band.

The band is The Hard to Get. They are from L.A. and I have listened to their new EP, Looking Good at least 15 times since Tuesday. Looking Good, starts off strong with the title track and Melissa singing “Mama didn’t live like me / She was married by 23 / She didn’t rock a late night scene, / didn’t follow her midnight dreams” over acoustic guitar arpeggios and Tim Lee’s accordion, all of which is reduced to bass and handclaps by the third verse before mounting to the requisite tutti finale.

“Dance Serene”, the fourth of the five tracks which comprise Looking Good is notable as an admirable invocation of the Brazilian sound (impressive since, as most of you probably know, Los Angeles is not in Brazil). Seriously, folks, this track could very well have appeared on a Cibelle or CéU record. The final track, “She Is a Jet”, is a strong closer. With a groove worthy of nosnow/noalps and momentum to match, this is a straight-up indie rock tune, and a good one.

On such a short set (about 20 minutes) with so many bright spots, it is difficult to choose a standout track, but I have done so anyway, and I’m going to go against the grain here. While in many ways, “Dance Serene” is the landmark track of Looking Good, it is the third song, “Good at That”, which has stuck with me from the moment of the first listen. Maybe it’s the sickeningly infectios “do do do” refrain (I’m singing it right now, can’t you hear?) or the call and response style chorus. Or it could be the lyrics, which are terribly clever (“Hey I don’t know how / I got caught in your labyrinth of mist and cloud. / From France to the Hague / the only thing that’s clear is that our love is vague. / But the last time I tried to share what I could see / I had to give my heart a hysterectomy. / I’m really good at faking out. / What a tease.”). I can’t really be sure, but I do know that this is clear cut, good songwriting and I like it. And it ends on a major seventh (which is sexier than Piney Gir’s accordion)!

I haven’t mentioned the second track, “The Verge”. It’s good, too, but I didn’t want to sound like I was gushing or anything and lose 12,000 indie points for such an uncouth departure from my typically cool and disaffected writing style. (God forbid my blog be too blog-like!) The Hard to Get are in the process of finalizing their summer tour, and we will try to have those dates for you when we can. For now, you can buy Looking Good from thehardtoget.com, listen to several of the tracks on MySpace, become their fan on (the far superior) Facebook, and watch the video for “Shake” below.
