If you know me well, you are sitting in front of your computer chuckling right now. Simply, of cours

If you know me well, you are sitting in front of your computer chuckling right now. Simply, of course I chose “MMMBop” for 1997. There was no other choice.

I hated Hanson and “MMMBop” when they first arrived on the scene in 1997. A fifth grader with a mind of my own, I was just a couple of years late to the grunge party. I made a regular habit of wearing oversized corduroys with big flannel shirts when not in the tie-dyed Cool as a Moose T-Shirt and adidas wind pants that may as well have been my uniform (yes, I did get made fun of in middle school). If I remember correctly, I was loving the musical stylings of the Gin Blossoms and No Doubt, and more embarrassingly The Spice Girls and The Eagles.

In short, despite some seriously poor judgment in the fashion department, I could recognize Hanson as being pretty fucking terrible. Even though it was cool that Zac Hanson was my age, I couldn’t tell if he was a boy or a girl; I had no idea what the hell “MMMBop” was about and it seemed nonsensical; and I have always been turned off by crazed tweens and whatever they’re screaming about.

I later came to my senses. I could not tell you when the switch was flipped, but probably sometime around 2003. “MMMBop” is the greatest song ever written.

As far as I can tell, an “MMMBop” is an interval of time, an interval that may be short or long, depending on the context in which it is used. Sort of like how Rhode Island can be small when thought of as a state, or large when used as a unit of measure to approximate the size of hunks of ice that are breaking off of Antarctica.

Despite the fact that it goes about as deep as you might expect a 7th grader to bring it (and, well, that’s all you should expect from Hanson), “MMMBop” is basically a peppy reminder that the vast majority of your friends and lovers are going to end up fucking you over, so you have to take care of those who take care of you. An “MMMBop”, specifically, seems to be the amount of time after which your friends will turn into complete fucking douchebags.

If you haven’t investigated the song, you might be surprised by the lyrics.

You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You’re going through all this pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they’re gone so fast
And they’re gone so fast

So hold on the ones who really care
In the end they’ll be the only ones there
When you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care
Can you tell me who will still care

(lots of MMMBoping)

In an mmm bop, they’re gone
Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It’s a secret no one knows
It’s a secret no one knows
No one knows

(More mmmboping and asking if you know the secret)

So, it’s catchy and it reminds you to take care of everyone you know because you never know who is going to be an asshole and who has your back.

I understand that it’s basically impossible to hear the majority of the lyrics, even when you know them, but I swear they’re there.

I don’t know why, but I really do love “MMMBop” and it seems that everyone around me knows this. I regularly get phone calls or voicemails letting me know that the masterpiece is on the radio and allowing me to listen, or excited text messages that read “mmmbop is on!” I’m not sure what this says about me, but it seems clear that a good portion of my friends associate me with the song.

and here are the brothers (the precursor to the JoBros) performing the song live in 2008

Also, yeah, they grew out of the awkward stage:

Era il lontano 1997, questi ragazzini scalarono le classifiche con questa hit, dell’album Middle of Nowhere. Il singolo ha raggiunto la prima posizione in ben 27 Paesi.

It was a total success.

I mean, it was at my camp with my friends, so obviously it was going to be fun, I just couldn’t tell my parents it was for Halloween because they think that is Satanic (go figure it’s also my little sister’s birthday…).

But it was my first costume party, and I decided the day before that I was going to be Lady Gaga because really, that meant I could do anything and still pull it off.

So this is how my costume went. First I wore my sister’s Hannah Montana wig. Then I had on red tights and a red t-shirt (that I bought at Walmart like 20 minutes before the party) with a flowy black shirt and a black skirt over it. Plus I was wearing my homemade pink/purple/sparkly silver tutu. To top it off, I had big white sunglasses, red lipstick, and a blue lightning bolt painted on my face. I could find a microphone, but whatever.

In addition to Lady Gaga, also attending the party was Robin Hood, Waldo, an alien, a witch, a cat, a viking, a 1920’s flapper, a robot, a firefighter, a Bollywood girl, an owl, and Bert and Ernie hosted.

And of course, drinking was involved. We had limited space and short attention spans, so we only got in a couple rounds of beer pong/Beirut/I don’t actually care what it’s called. But I started kicking ass in flip cup. And evetually, the copious amounts of alcohol led to people singing karaoke to MMMBop by Hanson. It was great.

We did of course all have to cram together in a very small space and sleep on a beer soaked rug, but whatever. Because then in the morning, I was awarded the Best Costume for the Costume That Most Contrasted With My Personality :)

In 1997, God sent three prized cherubs down to earth. These long golden haired boys had the voices of Angels. To many, they would be remembered only for MmmBop;as nothing more than a band with a one hit wonder. But, to a few hundred thousand fans everywhere they would be worshiped forever. I am talking about Hanson of course.

When I first saw Hanson on MTV way back in the 3rd grade I assumed, as did many, that they were female, but TRL quickly influenced me to believe otherwise. Carson Daily assured me that the boys’ long locks were not like the coiled hair of a girl or even the greasy mane of a grunge boy, but rather the symbol of a pre-teen sex god. Isaac, Taylor, and, my personal favorite, Zac had overcome their humble Tulsa upbringing and instantly become icons.

It seemed that after the first Hanson brother album Middle of Nowhere, they vanished from the airwaves. But any dedicated Hanson fan will tell you this is not true. Hanson currently is independently touring and producing their own music and, to the thrill of at least three girls, they are producing many many children. Just yesterday my friend received Hanson’s autograph when the boys were on the American University Campus. Their newest album will be released in May of 2010.

Isaac, Taylor, Zac, when you are old and losing your hair, I can tell you that I will still care. I miss your synchronized jams, your long blonde and slightly messy hair, and your pop love songs.

Hanson, I miss your face- Shassie

I keep meaning to shine a light on director Tamra Davis, so let’s do it. Having worked on clips like Depeche Mode’s “But Not Tonight,” she made a name for herself by working with talent on the seminal Delicious Vinyl label, directing clips like Young MC’s “Bust a Move” and Tone Lōc’s “Wild Thing.”

Soon after, she started working with folks like Sonic Youth and The Beastie Boys, and also built a family with Beastie Mike D. She’s also responsible for discovering Spike Jonze, with whom she co-directed the music video for Sonic Youth’s “100%.”

Davis would later go on to direct features like CB4, Guncrazy, Billy Madison, and Half Baked, a personal favorite. She also directed Crossroads, the cheesy but kinda enjoyably ridiculous Britney Spears vehicle. In addition, she helmed some memorable videos, including Veruca Salt’s “All Hail Me,” Hanson’s “MMMBop,” and Luscious Jackson’s “Ladyfingers.” She still works today, primarily in television, and has her own Web-based cooking show. But let’s reflect on some selected works of her grrrlriffic music video filmography.

The one everyone should hear: too many to pick one, but if I can pick a few: “Underneath”, “Great Divide”, “Go”, “Fire on the Mountain”

Dude, Hanson did make music after “MMMBop”. Really really good music. The three brothers have made several albums since their young debut, but “Underneath” and especially “The Walk” stand out as excellent pop-rock albums.

A FINE FRENZY

The one everyone’s heard: “Almost Lover”

The one everyone should hear: “Last Of Days”

Better known for the lead singer’s shock of red hair, the famous single is well-known, but I personally prefer the “Last of Days”. This song sails along, wistful and sad.

VANESSA CARLTON

The one everyone’s heard: “A Thousand Miles”

The one everyone should hear: “Nolita Fairytale”

This girl can sing, and has evolved past her girly pop days. Her latest album “Heroes & Thieves” is parts joyful and dark.

Seriously, Taylor Swift had a crush on that guy. He was apparently a singer in Hanson, the group famous for their hit single…Oh wait, nevermind.

She actually said, out loud, “I thought I was going to marry the middle one because his name was Taylor, too.” What, would they also have kids named Taylor, all George Foreman-style? It really doesn’t work that way, Taylor.

The sad part is that I did not even know that was a guy on the right there. I mean, he’s the reason for the teardrops on her guitar and I can’t even tell what gender he is.

Now enjoy “Mmmbop” by Hanson, because I know that you’re already thinking of it by now.

I just got back from a all day shopping trip with my friends. It was crazy. One stop we made was at

I just got back from a all day shopping trip with my friends. It was crazy. One stop we made was at a record show to cruise for music. It was a CD/record show, and a bunch of vendors came, trying to sell old vinyl.

I don’t have a record player — hell, I haven’t even used one since I actually owned records which was way back… just take my word that it was a long time ago. My very first was Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.” I was four, so I also owned a bunch of Strawberry Shortcake books on record. My mom used to own a record player, and every Christmas she would play the “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” record.

The last time I saw a record player wasn’t that long ago. I went to an indoor flea market in October, and we saw one there for $25. I thought about buying it for a minute, but that would mean I would also have to buy records. I went to a store at the flea market that sold vintage records, three for five bucks. I was thinking about how much I could get for the Doors’ self-titled record on vinyl on Ebay.

I had records when I was young, but I grew up in the time of compact discs. I owned a few tapes, but most were blanks that I used to tape songs off the radio. CDs were more my speed.

But I appreciate records now that I’m older. Of course, I still lack a turntable, and I was going to buy records for a decoration, not something to listen to. I’m probably doing a disservice to the vinyl collectors, but that’s okay. They’re looking through bins with hopes of uncovering some kind of gem. I’m just looking for one with a nice picture that is suitable for framing.

I didn’t find any, so I headed to the dollar CDs. I found The Chemistry, a band I randomly heard out about at Bamboozle a few years back. I kept looking. And then I found my gem. The Best of Hanson Live and Electric.

I’m not even kidding. I love Hanson. I saw the band’s first mall performance back in 1996, and I even used a Hanson lyric from the song “Weird” as my senior quote.“When you live in a cookie cutter world being different is a sin, so you don’t stand out and you don’t fit in.”

I was 17 and blue eyed. I was sure that I was going to change the world. I haven’t, but that’s okay. I still have time. Most of the best artwork is appreciated posthumously. I’m not planning on that happening to me, but if it does, that’s okay, too.

At least I’ll always have Hanson.

The album that I got in the dollar bin is a promo album. It doesn’t come with any of the fancy artwork, but it does come with an interesting fact on the back: Hanson has sold over 15 million albums. Fifteen million albums. And I now own four — “Middle Of Nowhere,” the band’s debut, “Snowed In,” the band’s Christmas album, “3 Car Garage,” the indie recordings and now “Live and Electric.” The other ones I actually paid full price for. Me and over 15 million other people.

It’s amazing. At the height of Hanson’s popularity, back in 1996, Isaac was 15, Taylor was probably 13 and Zak had to be around 10. The boys were writing about love before actually experiencing it. They were plastered on walls when Zak should have just been in fifth grade. Can you imagine?

I didn’t think anything of them being so young. I just liked MmmBop. It was catchy and played on the radio, and the radio was feeding me my listening candy.

I remember I had a cassette single of MmmBop, so I could play it while I was driving. A guy I used to be good friends with took the tape, cracked it in half and threw it out the window. I was so angry. That was my tape, and he ruined it. I needed my MmmBop while driving, and now I had to settle with catching it on the radio. Luckily for me, it seemed to play every other song.

The live CD, which was recorded in Melbourne, Australia in June 2005, is bringing back memories of when I watched Hanson on Saturday Night Live when I was babysitting one night. It’s letting me remember when I was young, when I had the whole world ahead of me.

Hanson did too.

I wonder if they do now.

Oh, they were such babies when mainstream media embraced them, yearned for them, needed them. Demanded them. They couldn’t be kids. They were teen idols. Their youth was stripped and replaced by popularity.

I’m not blaming anyone [[not one of those 15 million records sold, either]]. But I just never thought about how these kids [[they were kids]] were thrown into the spotlight. They grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma for goodness sake. And then they were the biggest family band since, probably, the Osmonds. I wonder how many records Donnie and Marie sold?

When Taylor [[the middle one]] was about 19, he got married to his then-pregnant girlfriend. And that’s it. He couldn’t be a kid anymore; he was having one of his own. I heard Zak, who is now 20, got engaged to his lifelong sweetheart [[and I kind of wonder how lifelong works on the road]]. It’s just making me really depressed to think about how the youth of America can strip the youth of other kids. It’s not done on purpose, but it happens.

Where’s my “Middle Of Nowhere” disc? That’s the one where Hanson sounds happy, not grown up. The band is just playing around with pop tunes. There isn’t any of the mellow/indie stuff that’s on this live album. And, for what it’s worth, the band doesn’t even sound like it’s having fun on stage. And the audience seems just as engrossed. Every so often you can hear a random scream, but it isn’t anything like the live shows I’ve been to. And there doesn’t seem to be an interaction between the band and the audience. It sounds so disconnected.

If this is what Hanson thinks is “The Best Of,” then we seriously have a problem.

Rezultatul a fost albumul Live acustic, The Walk.

(a segunda pessoa, digo)

A letra a música diz “She lick me like a lollipop” (detalhe que eu, Nádia Lapa, MORDO pirulitos.

A letra, sensacional.

E, vamos combinar, o melhor comentário ever no You Tube:

George Michael, antes de ser preso em banheiros públicos, total arrasava na década de 1980. Três anos antes, quando ainda era do Wham!, foi a vez de Everything she wants (saca o cabelo!):

Here’s my not-so-secret confession of the day: By the tender age of 12, I was one of the bigge

Here’s my not-so-secret confession of the day: By the tender age of 12, I was one of the biggest Hanson fans on the planet (the other being my younger sister, of course). We knew all the words by heart; screamed and cried when the blonde-haired brothers appeared on the screen; our bedrooms were adorned with every poster from Teen Beat and Tiger Beat we could get our little hands on. To date, Kate and I have seen the boys in concert more than a half dozen times — and grown up with them, too.

I won’t wax philosophical on you . . . suffice it to say that Hanson has been an absolute constant in my life since Kate and I first saw their “MMMBop” video on VH1 (yes, VH1) in June 1997. We were sitting with our parents in the living room, all of us eating pizza, and my dad said something like “those kids like they’re your age” (how right he was!). More than a decade later, I still lovingly play “Thinking Of You,” “Where’s the Love” and all the newest records over and over (I’m pretty partial to “The Walk”, their latest album, released in 2007). I know my parents and grandparents will recall all those summers I sat around with my Walkman, my grainy “Middle of Nowhere” cassette playing over and over. I had enough Hanson shirts to wear a different one every day for three full school weeks — and frequently did! My best friend Kelly and I would often coordinate them, going with the “green shirt” one day and the “black shirt” the next. We had our own Hanson code — no English necessary. I’ll dedicate a future post to all of our Hanson adventures . . . I have plenty of hilarious stories and blackmail photos to share!

So zipping along — 2009! Brothers and bandmates Isaac, Taylor and Zac are all married with kids of their own. (No word yet on just how musically inclined they are, but my money is on very!) Taylor has actually branched out and is lead singer of . . . another band: Tinted Windows. Their debut album was out last Tuesday and, without a second thought, I grabbed that puppy off iTunes. I had no idea what to expect — or even what their sound was like. But if Taylor was the voice of this crew, there was no way my loyalty would wane!

Because let me tell you — Hanson fans? Loyal. Fiercely, embarrassingly loyal. When Kate and I saw them in Falls Church, Va. last year (and then wound up lost in Southeast D.C. trying to get home afterward), I took more than a few elbows to the face as my fellow fans clambored over me to get just a wee bit closer to Isaac’s sweaty face or Taylor’s keyboard.

So I’m listening to Tinted Windows, my heart hammering at the sound of Taylor’s familiar voice filling up my car and iPod. Hanson is my band and I love them as a unit, but honestly — Tay (yeah, after 12 years? We’re on a nickname basis) is the voice I associate with the group. Wherever Taylor goes, I go.

And so I boldly dove into the tunes of Tinted Windows, a band that . . . is awesome! Their music is decidedly upbeat, quirky and fun — and perfect for the summer. I’m so tired of listening to the same stuff over and over again, and I can say for sure that this album will be the one I associate with the summer of 2009. (Uncoincidentally, I associate “The Walk” with summer 2007.) Their single “Kind Of A Girl” is a great song to crank up and sing in the sunshine . . . which is exactly what I did while driving to see my best friend on Saturday. The sun was out, the air hot and windy, sunglasses were on, windows were down . . . I’m young, alive and free. It’s the sort of fun, energetic music that reminds you to be in the moment – to stay here and now, remembering everything that’s good and awesome about the world.

Okay, I know. I promised I wasn’t going to wax philosophical! But when it comes to books and music, it’s hard for me not to get all . . . squishy on you.

So back to the songs. We have eleven of them — twelve, if you get the bonus track from iTunes. The thing that really surprised me was the lack of anything “slow” — another reason it’s a great warm-weather album. Nothing to bring you down here. My favorites are definitely “Messing With My Head,” “Dead Serious” and “Back With You” — the classic combination of awesome lyrics, great rhythm and energetic appeal.

I’m pretty much in love with it.

Rock on, gentlemen.

Check out the album on Amazon or visit the band’s official page.

Jordan Taylor Hanson+3

26 years ago on this glorious day God gave us Taylor Hanson. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Taylor is the second child of Diana and Clarke Hanson. The future would prove that Mr. Taylor Hanson would never come second again.

In May of 1997 when Hanson blew up the scene, a young alternative rock loving 14 year old Danger Bowie removed her Tuesday underwear and they were secretly Hanson’s for the keeping. To the chagrine of her mother/supplier, Danger became engulfed in Hanson mania. Isaac, the older brother, with a face he was still growing into, was my absolute favorite. My cat’s pajamas. Pictures of his giant horse head adorned my walls and my heart. Taylor was my best friend Haley’s favorite brother but I would have a secret menage a trois in my head on Saturday night’s with him and Isaac or Ike as I affectionately called him.

Hanson in bubbles

I have no idea where Haley is now and my secret musical tastes only have eyes for the Jonas Brothers, which makes me not only a pedophile but the biggest traitor this side of “MMMBop”. Yet I will never forget the pure raw desire that I felt as I listened to their breakout album “Middle Of Nowhere” . It ignited a disgusting underdeveloped stream of lust, a high that I chase to this day at 26 years old. So I want to say to you Taylor Hanson, one third of the truest group to my heart; You can stop looking for the love because it’s right here. Now please walk away before you get me pregnant because as it turns out you Hansons are some baby making motherfuckers.

I have read some of the old posts I have in my now defunct blog at blog-city. Some of them were funny, optimistic, too dramatic and others are just plain non sense. LOL. But I don’t know, what happen to my optimism? I feel like it’s either it has decreased tremendously or I already have lost it completely? I use to write about anything I see and feel. Stories about my stupidity, my childhood memories, how I bully and got bullied, the series of posts I wrote about Mr. Dome Cake! hahaha….and everything. Reading them makes me feel really good. It’s nostalgic. Life that time may not be exactly as extravagant as what I have now but it was fun in its own way. I wasn’t careless but I don’t limit myself too much depriving myself of the things I enjoy. I remember how I would write so long, my readers call it already a novel. hahaha… But so much has changed. I can’t exactly say all these changes are for the better. But I have really come a long way.

A year after the peak of my blogging life, when I somehow lost my interest in updating my space on the web, I have experienced so much, things you can’t even imagine. My life has changed tremendously. It was turned up side down. Wow. Was it for the better? I can’t really say. It has been a roller coaster ride, even up to now. There was even a time I wrote which I titled “I like how things are going this way now” which is about how I got over my ex and how I look at the “bright side of life.” I write poems, both in Filipino and English, trying to become Shakespeare or Balagtas, I would write about the places I’ve been to, people I have talk to, even the sms I received, and I write them in details. My readers were not plenty but they rock! Most of them were young professionals, same age as me at the time, but one thing I was kind of surprised about was attracting a mother to read my blog on a regular basis. She said she likes the way I write, entertaining, full of enthusiasm even if the story is tragic. She said she can relate to my broken hearted posts. Then I wrote about this mysterious guy with nice looking feet I’ve met in a coffee shop where I work. How he puzzles me until now of his identity. The open letter I wrote for myself. The letter for MR. DAWAN! hahaha… (DAWAN- which means “THE ONE”) man, look how flirt I was (or am?) LOL. I wrote quite a few about men, oh come on, not few, more than a few about men I encountered. hahahaha…. Such a flirt young lady I was.

But I am no longer young now. After about 6 years or more, I am here. Older. Yay! I still have that sense of humor in me but not quite like before. I think some happenings in my life has changed my perspective about the world and people I mingle with. I hate to admit but I have become more of a drama queen now. LOL. And he hates it. I hate it too. Time really can change a person. I am not the same person I was 10 years ago.

God, I am really getting old! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!!!! *panic mode – running around the room screaming!*

I want to go back to that time when hurt and pain hasn’t affected me that much. When I still can wear a big smile despite the hardships I was facing. When I see the world so big and great. When I make friends to just about anybody and just let my guard down.

How nostalgic this is.

I want to go back to the time when I first saw the Mmmbop video on MTV, to the time Joe called me from the airport, before his plane takes off and when he made his overseas call, to the time I realized I had a crush with Mr. Dome Cake, to the time B and I were barely starting our friendship, to the time I met Jars of Clay at Greenbelt mall that I almost fainted when they took my hand for a shake, OMG!, to the time I won a book of Bob Ong’s in one of his online contests, to the time I received an invitation to attend the open poetry contest in Maryland, USA, to the time I bought my first computer out of my own money, to the time when my high school crush Jay talked to me for thinking that I was my sister (he knows my sister and we look like a twin they say), to the time when I would just leave home, go to the mall or park and just sit on the bench or on the grass and write, sip my coffee, look at the people passing by, and of course to the time I first saw him on the camera, how he captured my eyes, though there was a sort of an awkward moment for a few minutes, but it felt good, so good that the things I didn’t expect I’d do, I have done it right that time, to the time I was walking on my way home after our first meeting, the feeling as if you are floating in the air and smiling like a total idiot, to the time he would call me “Jaan” or “Mahal ko” , how we talk about our future and how he wants our future kids to look like me and how I want them to look like him instead, and every time he whispers the 3 most powerful words “I LOVE YOU”. These are some of the good old days I have. The times where I want to be again. If there is only a way I can go back, I would.

I miss my old self.
