Yes, I’m Going Rogue!

My ladies’ golf hat is ready to go. You know – the one that says, “Don’t Blame Me! I voted for Sarah!” I’ve also got my campaign button ready to go. It says, “Sarah Palin – 2012.” My book is securely jacketed and packed in my overnight bag just waiting for her to sign it.

Look out, Springfield! You’re going to be invaded by at least one visitor from Sarah’s Army!

I look at it this way… it’s MY 60th birthday, and I can spend it any way I want to.

…and that describes – with great accuracy – what my ‘mo looked like after a month.

If you have lousy sense of imagination, that is.

Truth is, I had problems thinking up something truly unremarkable while sitting here at my desk. What most people grow in three days, I take a month. What most people clip within three days, I had nothing to show for. And naturally, when people showed off their ‘mo, it looked good. Mine? If I had to give rate it on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being “You mean that’s a ‘mo? Ha Ha Ha Ha ROFL LMAO” and 10 being “Hey mate, nice ‘mo!”, it’s a -25.

I’ve ran out of negative superlatives to describe my ‘mo, let alone define what a -25 is.

By the third week, Michele had refused to kiss me, insisting she didn’t marry a toilet brush. I realised I had to just let my ‘mo grow out as it couldn’t be trimmed. It wasn’t thick enough, nor was there enough growth in ample areas to warrant a trim. It wasn’t full enough to be passed off as a ‘mo, but there was sufficient hair in all the right areas to be spotted out from a crowd.

Catch 22, only I am none for the better with either options.

I think just for once, I will give up the idea of Asians having facial hair. I truly envy non-Asians with their thick coat of luscious Persian rugs sitting on their face. It shapes their faces so well and it complements their age or character very well should it see them fit to grow one.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you "A Failed Asian Experiment". *runs away and hide*

On the plus side, I managed to raise $28 from all my friends for the Movember fund. I was too embarrassed of my ‘mo to ask them for anything more than a dollar donation. All of them gladly obliged, but none could resist a poke at my attempt.

“You call that a ‘mo? Aww you poor thing, hold on let me grab my purse.”

Poor form indeed.

A huge pat on the back of everyone who has supported and sponsored our team over the last 6 weeks.

Foxy Movember Beats was a great success and raised an additional £400 on the night, taking our total over the £1500 mark.

While we try and collect all the photos of the night, keep your eye on our Flickr photostream, where we will upload all the photos from the night. We will blog the best ones when they are all in.

As we say goodbye to our beloved Mo’s its still time to sponsor us, so follow the links on the right and bung us some bonus cash!

Thanks again for everyone who showed their support and all the Foxy Movember Beats attendees, next year will be bigger and better than ever!

Treasure Hunt Five is here! Thanks to the continued sponsorship of the ESA Foundation, you can once

Treasure Hunt Five is here! Thanks to the continued sponsorship of the ESA Foundation, you can once again take on the challenge of the ThanksUSA Treasure Hunt. TH5 features questions on five states, Earth’s resources, and the United States Army. We hope not only to challenge you, but also to educate and entertain you. Visit this blog every week to get hints and tips for discovering the treasures of TH5! To get you started, let’s take a look at the very first question of the first chapter:

Missouri

A1. We begin our trip where, in 1861, a copy of President Lincoln’s inaugural address took seven days and 17 hours to travel by Pony Express from this city to Sacramento, California. This was the fastest mail delivery made in the United States at that time. Where are we?

To find our answer, we must first select some key words from the question. This is a very detailed question which contains lots of clues and key words. You may not need all of them, but I’ll point out many to make sure you understand how to find an answer.

First, remember that we’re looking for a geographical location in Missouri, abbreviated MO. Dates are great clues, so note 1861. Next, the clue mentions a copy of Lincoln’s inaugural address. We’re also told that the copy travelled to Sacramento, California, by Pony Express.

Now that we’ve identified key words, you can type them into your search engine using a plus sign to separate them:

MO + 1861 + Lincoln’s inaugural address + Sacramento, California + Pony Express

Are all these keywords necessary? No…you will probably find your answer simply by reading up on the Pony Express. However, if you’re new to the internet or unfamiliar with search engines, more key words can certainly help.

This “walk-through” may seem obvious and over-simplified to some, but please keep in mind that we have some very eager youngsters tackling TH5. I promise you that there are some very challenging questions in TH5 and I’m here to help you through them all! If you ever find yourself “stuck,” leave a comment on any Treasure Hunt Five blog and I’ll address your particular question in a future blog. If you prefer, you can even send me a direct email at sherrykoch@thanksusa.org and I’ll try to answer you within 2 days.

To give you some extra encouragement, I’d like to introduce another TH4 laptop computer winner, Lisa Woods. Lisa was randomly selected from those who submitted correct answers for chapter 10 (Maryland) of TH4.

Lisa Woods and family

Lisa says, “I loved doing the treasure hunt. I searched and searched and had to redo some of my answers but felt really good when I finished and even better when I found out I won a laptop. Some of the puzzles are tough. I can’t wait for the next challenge!” Congratulations Lisa and good luck with TH5.

Be sure to take a break from the hunt at least once a week to check out this Treasure Hunt Five blog. You’ll meet more TH4 winners and get some great pointers for TH5. Have fun and the best of luck to all!

They are also some of my oldest friends– in fact, we were all in theater together during my college days. (yes, I was in theater. enough on that subject). John and Cody were the subjects of my first ever engagement session and one of my first weddings. It had been a couple of years since we did any pictures together, so I drove on up to Nevada, Missouri to shoot them and to do a family shoot with some friends of theirs. As usual, their expressiveness (Cody is a professional storyteller, by the way) made them excellent subjects.

Today more than ever, consumers are overwhelmed with choices, and distractions. The cost of attracti

Today more than ever, consumers are overwhelmed with choices, and distractions. The cost of attracting users to your website continues to increase and keeping them engaged is more important than ever.

Engagement doesn’t end with an individual browser reading content or clicking on an ad. Rather, engagement is an ongoing process that results in loyal customers who come back again and again, becoming more vested in your web site.

How can you make sure you’re engaging and keeping customers?

In order to create a loyal following, there are some basic principles you need to consider. From first impressions to life-long membership, put yourself in the shoes of your browsers and make their experience a valuable one.

Reduce Clutter. How many times have you visited a website only to be overwhelmed and confused? What is this site about you may have asked yourself. Or perhaps you found yourself asking, ‘Where is the information I’m looking for?

Don’t ask your browsers or potential customers to figure this out. Make your site clutter free and create a visual priority that emphasizes the information, resources, or actions your browsers want. By reducing obstacles you build trust among new web site visitors and allow for simple decision making – which benefits everyone.

Make Navigation Intuitive. There are many ways to navigate a web page but intuition rules the day. Don’t try to get fancy with your navigation or overuse java script. Basic navigation that follows current convention is the best way to lead individuals through your web site to the information they’re looking for.

Make The Initial Site Interaction Relevant. When a browser reaches your web site, you have less than seven seconds to get them engaged. Making your initial site interaction relevant to what individuals are looking for is essential for keeping them interacting long term.

If you are promoting your web site with Google Adwords, or any pay per click advertising for that matter, be sure to create customer landing pages that are truly relevant to the individual who clicks-through your ad. Once you’ve established relevancy, you can move them deeper into your content, tools, and resources.

Ensure That Your Content Is Up-to-date. Web site content that isn’t up to date does not serve your audience and browsers are likely to move on. One way to ensure that information is timely is by providing a feed of relevant news or information. If including static text on your web pages, try not to include specific dates. However, if you must publish dates, be sure to update this information on a regular basis.

Start An Interaction With Your Users. Each time a browser views your web page, you have an opportunity to interact with them. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. One great way to interact is to offer something of value at no cost. This can be a white paper, access to an exclusive list, or simply a 30 day free trial. Be sure to capture an individual’s valid email address and include them on your mailing list. An auto-responder is best if you wish to engage these individuals on an ongoing basis.

Provide Plenty Of Support. Don’t hesitate to offer support right from your home page. Prominently display your 800 number, support email address, and additional information for your prospects and customers such as mailing address. This information is viewed favorably by search engines and also creates a sense of legitimacy. Contact information builds trust among prospects and elicits interest in your company.

Make Sharing Easy. Once you’ve made your web site easy to use, don’t hesitate to offer browsers the ability to share your web site with others. This can be in the form of a simple widget that allows users to bookmark your page, subscribe to an Rss feed, or submit your content to popular news sites like Digg.com.

Individuals are much more likely to visit a web site based on a friend’s recommendation versus some other type of marketing initiative. Leverage the power of viral marketing with easy sharing tools.

Your web site can be your greatest asset. Unfortunately, many marketers and website owners are so focused on increasing traffic that they lose site of the audience that’s already visiting their web pages but are simply not converting.

Don’t make the same mistake. Improve the quality of you site through relevant content that is up-to-date and easy to find. Once you’ve engaged users, encourage them to share. Doing so will make your site perform better, increase conversions, and deliver value for all involved.

If you’ve ever Googled your name, you know how important managing your reputation online can b

If you’ve ever Googled your name, you know how important managing your reputation online can be. Each day, thousands of individuals are searching online for information about others simply by searching on Google or other leading search engines. With information being so readily available, managing your reputation is more important than ever.

How to Manage Your Reputation Online

Fortunately, managing your reputation online isn’t all that difficult, but it does take work. Here are 7 basic steps you can take to ensure that your reputation doesn’t become negatively impacted by what’s being said about you online.

1. See where you stand. Start your reputation management initiative by Googling your name. Try it with quotes and with out (first and last name together). Look through each of your results on page one and page two of Google. Are there any there are are negative or you wish to remove?

2. Set up a Google alert. Visit Google and set up an alert for your name. After setting up the alert Google will send you and email to confirm that you wish to receive the updates. Accept the alert and each time your name is published to the Web, you’ll know about it.

3. Contact website owners for name removal. If there are sites that include your name and commentary that is less than desirable, contact the appropriate websites requesting that the information be removed. More often than not, website owners will agree to remove your name and/or inappropriate information.

4. Purchase a domain with your name. Add sites and webpages associated with your name and watch negative search results get pushed lower on Google rankings. Visit GoDaddy or another provider of website URLs and hosting, and purchase a domain that contains your name. Even if your name is rather common, experiment with variations until your name can be established in the form of a dot com. Once you own a domain, publish a webpage with your personal profile.

5. Start a blog under your name. Blogger is a great tool for setting up your own blog which can be used to publish information about yourself. Popular blog sites are often picked up by Google and you can control the content. Be sure to sign up for Technorati after your blog has been published. Submit your blog for review and its popularity will increase, improving search rankings and continuing to push down negative search results.

6. Free press release. Use free-press-release.com or a similar free press release site to publish favorable information about your and your reputation. This form of reputation management is easy and costs nothing. Be sure to use your name throughout the release and in the release title.

7. Author articles in your field. Publish article relative to a particular topic or area in which you’ve done some work or have experience. Use article distribution serivces to build online references to your content. Make sure your articles contain an about the author section that links back to your main website.

There are a variety of strategies you can use to manage online references about you, your family, or others that need to manage their reputation online. Other online sites like Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube, and Squidoo, offer ample opportunity to deliver favorable search results that can push unfavorable results down in search engine rankings. The key is to start today – proactively manage your reputation and put yourself in a favorable light.

So now I’ve had my first experience taking school pictures. Those of you that know me and my work at all know that my photography style doesn’t exactly go hand in hand with the usual ’school portrait’ format. But one of my favorite clients- mom of little Oliver (click here for a refresher)- asked if I’d do pictures for the preschool that Oliver attends, and I decided why not?

I, of course, put my own spin on it, and after getting over my initial inhibitions about taking pictures of 20 kids within a 2 hour period, had a LOT of fun. Turned out to be a great experience- and I can’t wait to hear what the parents think of the modern take on school portraits!

In today’s web world, one thing is clear. Content is still king. Writing the right kind of content and disturbing that content, also known as article marketing, can help you establish yourself as an expert and improve your online marketing results.

Getting started with article marketing is easy to do and can pay huge dividends. Many individuals use article marketing to improve search engine rankings, to inform, or to pitch products and services they sell. Regardless of your purpose, consider using article marketing as a great way to build a loyal following.

The proliferation of information online has brought with it varying degrees of content. Some content is valid, other content is purely fictional. When you write, be sure to provide references, examples, or quote data from other sources. This helps to build credibility and informs your audience that your content can be trusted. For your article marketing to be effective, follow these guidelines:

Research your niche. Before you begin any writing whatsoever, start by finding a niche that is popular and that you feel you can write about. It should be something you enjoy. If you are not interested in a particular area, it will be difficult to enjoy the process of writing articles.

Create a plan. Are you going to write one article per week or one each day? Think about how much time and energy you want to put into your article writing and for what purpose. If you simply want to write and publish your work, you may only want to do a little bit each day. Once you have a complete work, then you would submit to websites or blogs. On the other hand, if you are looking for improved rankings or sales from your article marketing, your publishing schedule may need to be more aggressive.

Write your article. Write and article on your subject that includes the specific keywords you seek to optimize for. Your article should be between four to seven hundred words. It all depends on the intent and purpose of the article. After you write your article make sure you proof it for spelling and grammatical errors.

Submit your article to article directories. This is a great way to get your information published quickly and easily. Register with an article directory like Ezinearticles or GoArticles. By doing so, you will have a place to submit your articles and build an author profile. Webmasters use these article directories to find content for their website. Additionally, article directories give you added exposure in a given topic area.

Article marketing has many benefits. The most important aspect of article marketing, in my opinion is to clearly understand what you want to use it for, building a plan, and consistently creating and distributing content. This is essential for long term success.

Columbia, MO - “What is going on in your state?” The email was from a LinkedIn contact and reader from South Africa. “Murder, incest, nude photos, discrimination. Is it true about inbreeding?”

No, but…

It is amazing that Missouri has hit the international news through the Internet and cable television five times in one week from the Associated Press, AOL News, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and other various sources. All online. Missouri is now infamous.

My dad called from Florida asking about Alyssa Bustamante by name. This murder occurred in Cole County Missouri, just outside of the capital, the City of Jefferson. Was she really only 15-years old? Did she really plan to kill the 9-year old girl and neighbor? Is she (Alyssa) really deranged? Is her father really in jail? He saw the story on CNN.

The nudity story is about a South Carolina woman, referred to as “Jane Doe” in court papers. The original St. Louis Post-Dispatch report indicated that the Creve Coeur, Mo. Riverfront Times ran a story in 2006 concerning cosmetic surgery, which discussed, in part, plastic surgery of the female genitalia. With pictures. Jane Doe’s picture. Without her permission. She did not sue the paper, but her doctors for releasing the picture. The photos are no longer available online.

The incest case involves six members of the Mohler family, including the 77-year old father, “charged with several felonies, including forcible sodomy, rape with a child younger than 12 and use of a child in a sexual performance. The allegations, which include bestiality, forcing children into fake marriages with relatives and making an 11-year-old have an abortion, date from 1988 to 1995.” All in Lafayette, Missouri.

Finally, the United States Supreme Court refused to hear a discrimination case concerning the Dillard’s department store in Columbia, Missouri. The thirteen believed that they were followed by security, denied services or otherwise ignored during their shopping experience.

A second story on racism, reported by CNN and the Missourian, concerns Heather Ellis’ actions at a Kennett Missouri Walmart. Video shows her disturbing the peace and fighting with police officers. She pleaded guilty, but others saw the incident as racially motivated, which Ellis denies.

It is not that Missouri, or any other state, or rural area is somehow immune from murder, incest, greed and maltreatment of minorities than other state, like New York, California and Florida. St. Louis and Kansas City have some of the highest murder rates in the country. They had become national and international stories because the media needs something to fill the growing 24/7/365 market they created through cable television and now, the Internet.

We have a growing fascination about heinous crimes of murder, incest and discrimination. The “CSI” and “Law and Order” series would never have been so popular along with their reality counter parts “Cops,” “Cheaters” and “America’s Most Wanted.” If there is not enough crime already, we can watch a minor hold-up in Abilene Kansas live on CNN, MSNBC, or any of the other 24/7/365 news stations on cable or online.

Years ago, an ethics professor warned me, “Never do anything that would get your name printed on the front page of the New York Times – above the fold.” Today, we live in a world where you do not want your name showing up on the home page of AOL, Yahoo, Google or any other ISP site. We live in glass houses and everyone else are throwing stones in our direction.

Question: can anyone actually live this angelic, perfect life? For one, I hope not. Like would be very dull. I just hope my own escapades do not appear on YouTube in the near future. Like sword fighting with straws at Denny’s.

Today, the art of marketing is far more complex than it once was. However, many of the same basic principles still apply. Too often, professional marketers and small business owners overlook the basic techniques that have separated successful campaigns from those that never turn a profit. Here is my all time list of effective marketing tips.

Know your audience. Successful campaigns get that way because marketers know their audience. They fully understand their needs, how to help meet those needs and how to create demand. Knowing and understanding your audience through proper market segmentation means a well targeted campaign that generates a profitable return.

Focus on the offer. A marketing offer is the driving force of marketing promotions that drive results. In fact, market testing has proven that the offer is the most significant criterion for conversion. Focus on your offer if you want to be successful.

Split test. Never ever run a campaign without testing something. One of the most common is a split test which allows you to simultaneously test two versions of something. It can be a web page, post card, or email. Split testing is essential for improving performance.

Never work alone. The most creative ideas come from working with other creative people. Don’t feel like you need to have all the answers or great ideas. You may start with an idea, but an open dialog with creative individuals will make it better.

Don’t sell on price. I’ve seen so many marketers fail because they sell on price alone. This leads to a discounting war, lower profitability, and often bankruptcy. Rather, focus on creating so much value that the perception of price becomes insignificant.

Consistent messaging. Consider the entire user experience before you launch a campaign. From email to website to offer, is the prospect having a consistent user experience? If they are, your campaigns stand above 98% of others.

Create value after the sale. As marketers, it’s our job to understand our market segment and build relationships, not dump people off at the front door of our store and walk away. Focus as much of your energy on building relationships with customers as you do prospects.

Test. Test. Test. In addition to split testing, you should consider multiple forms of testing in each marketing discipline. For direct mail, test headlines, offers, copy, time of direct mail drop, etc. Consider testing a life long mission.

Integrated Marketing Works Best. You can’t rely on one form of marketing to carry you to success. It’s okay to generate most of your leads or sales through PPC marketing if you will but what happens when that dries out? Use multiple media sources to meet your goals.

Nothing can replace experience. You can run out and hire all of the best consultants in the world, but you still have to do the work. Nothing can replace actual experience. It will make you a stronger marketer and more successful in the long term.

Apply these helpful marketing tips if you want to be truly successful. These techniques and tips are applied by successful marketers on a daily basis. The result is an ever growing success rate of marketing success.
