1990

• 2 pac participa como bailarín para Digital Underground.

• Se estrena en la emisora de radio WKCR de New York el “Strecht & Bobbito show”, programa dedicado a la música hip hop donde se hacían sonar demo-tapes (cintas de demostración) y freestyles (improvisaciones) en directo de rappers noveles que por aquel entonces no contaban con sello discográfico como Big L, Notorious B.I.G., Wu Tang Clan, Fugees o Fat Joe, todos ellos artistas reconocidos en la posteridad.

• Luther Campbell (2 Live Crew) y un propietario de una tienda de discos de Florida son arrestados por el polémico álbum de 2 Live Crew, “As Nasty as They Wanna Be” (Tan asquerosos como ellos quieran ser).

1991

• El álbum de N.W.A. “Niggaz 4 Life” vende alrededor de 954.000 copias en su primera semana, un trabajo que marcaría la ruta de muchos álbumes de rap hardcore en la posteridad.

• Cypress Hill lanza su primer disco e inician una campaña para legalizar el cáñamo.

• Notorious B.I.G. aparece en la sección “Unsigned hypes” (una sección de promoción para jóvenes sin sello descográfico) de la revista Source.

• Busta Rhymes aparece en el clásico de A Tribe Called Quest, “Scenario”.

1992

• Dr. Dre lanza “The Chronic”.

• Los Rock Steady DJ’s (DJ Qbert, DJ Apollo y Mix Master Mike) ganan el título mundial de la DMC (Disco Mix Club).

1993

• “The Chronic” alcanza el disco multiplatino.

• Wu Tang Clan lanza su álbum debut “Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers)” que se convertiría en disco de platino.

• Cypress Hill presenta su segundo disco, “Black Sunday”.

• Mobb Deep saca su disco début “Juvenile Hell”.

• DJ Qbert y Mix Master Mike (The Dream Team) ganan de nuevo el título mundial de la DMC, esta vez sin DJ Apollo.

• A Tribe Called Quest firma su tercer disco con “Midnight Marauders” con un Quién es Quién de la escena de por aquel entonces plasmado en la portada del LP.

1994

• La primera referencia de Nas, “Illmatic” , es calificada como uno de los mejores álbumes de Hip-Hop de la historia.

• Common presenta “Resurrection” y es aclamado como uno de los mejores liricistas de todos los tiempos.

• Warren G, hermanastro de Dr. Dre, consigue vender 4 millones de copias de su disco début “Regulate: The G Funk Era”.

• Tupac es asaltado y recibe cinco disparos en el vestíbulo de Quad Recording Studios en Manhattan, New York. Después de su recuperación acusaría a Puff Daddy, Notorious B.I.G. y Andre Harrell (mitad del dúo Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde) del ataque que sufrió.

• Notorious B.I.G. debuta con su LP “Ready to die” que se convertiría en disco multiplatino.

1995

• Queen Latifah gana un Grammy en la categoría “Best rap solo performance” por el tema “Unity”.

• Tupac firma por Death Row Records después de que Suge Knight pagase una fianza por él de 1,4 millones de dólares para sacarlo de la cárcel por una condena por supuestos abusos sexuales, Tupac siempre se declaró inocente.

• Eazy E muere de sida a los 31 años.

• Notorious B.I.G., apodado ya por aquel entonces por algunos como “King of New York”, es nombrado “Lyricist of the year” por la revista Source. Su single “One More Chance” fue directo al top de las listas.

1996

• “The Score”, una mezcla de letras conscientes y comprometidas con pinceladas de reggae, se convierte en el disco mas exitoso de The Fuggees. Debuta en el número uno y gana dos Grammys, aportando un respiro de aire distinto a la escena del Hip Hop.

• Los premios MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) celebrados en Reino Unido otorgan a The Fugees dos trofeos.

• Snoop Dogg y su guardaespaldas McKinley Lee son acusados de asesinar a Philip Woldemariam, un inmigrante etíope de 20 años de edad, tiroteado en agosto de 1993.

• Jay-Z lanza su después alabado debut, “Reasonable Doubt” (Duda razonable).

• Bone Thugs N Harmony en un tiempo récord pone en lo más alto su hit “Tha Crossroads”.

• El 7 de septiembre Tupac es tiroteado en Las Vegas después de asistir a una pelea de Mike Tyson. El día 13 de septiembre fallece a las 4:03 a.m.

1997

• Notorious B.I.G. es asesinado a golpe de bala el 9 de marzo en Los Ángeles a la salida de una fiesta que daba la revista Vibe en el Peterson Automotive Museum después de la gala de los premios Soul Train.

• Missy Elliott (Melissa Arnette Elliott) redefine el panorama con su primer álbum “Supa Dupa Fly”. Posteriormente se convertiría en líder de ventas como artista de rap femenino.

• Roc-A-Fella (disquera de Jay-Z) vende la mitad de sus acciones a Island Def Jam por millón y medio de dólares.

• Juice, MC de Chicago derrota a Eminem en la Scribble Jam, el mayor escaparate de Hip Hop underground en los Estados Unidos por aquel entonces.

• Interescope Records vende sus intereses en Death Row (disquera de Suge Knight, que contaba con Snoop Dog o Tupac entre otros).

1998

• Dr. Dre ficha a Eminem para su sello Aftermath después de escuchar un freestyle de este último en una emisora de radio de Los Ángeles.
• El debut en solitario de Lauryn Hill “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” es nominado diez veces a los premios Grammy y gana cinco de ellos incluidos Álbum del año y Mejor nuevo artista.

• Shyne (Jamal Barrow) firma un contrato discográfico con Bad Boy Entertainment, discográfica de P. Diddy.

1999

• Respaldado por Dr. Dre, Eminem vende 4 millones de copias de su debut, “The Slim Shady LP”.

• The Neptunes (Chad Hugo y Pharrell Williams) controlan las ondas con varios hits para la radio como “Got Your Money” de Ol’ Dirty Bastard o “Oh No” de Noreaga.

• Big L (Lamont Coleman) es asesinado el 15 de febrero cerca de su casa, en Harlem, New York.

• Dr Dre pone en el candelero de nuevo a la costa oeste estadounidense con su LP “2001”.

“Queensbridge: the world’€™s largest housing project, with the richest legacy in hip-hop: from The Juice Crew, to Nas, Mobb Deep and the realest of them all: Tragedy. While still in his mother’s womb, Tragedy’s dad is shot dead. Thirteen years later, with his mom hooked on smack, Trag has to hustle to survive, but the kid’s a rap genius and is signed to the world famous Juice Crew ’til he’s busted and sent to Riker’s at 16. Trag emerges political, releasing his Intelligent Hoodlum album. ‘Nuff respect, but he’s eclipsed by young rapper Nas. Trag falls prey to the streets where he discovers teen rappers Capone-N-Noreaga. After dissing Snoop Dogg, they get a record deal. Trag is hailed as a genius for masterminding their geo-political War Report album.
Capone is busted and Noreaga finds stardom, leaving Trag to starve. Then Trag’s mom ODs. Prison sentence: On December 27, 2007, Tragedy was convicted of selling narcotics and sentenced to a maximum of four years in prison.

Mobb Deep’s The Infamous is the anthem! I would bump this album in high school religiously. I was so mad when Prodigy signed with G Unit and started shouting out how G Unit saved his life and not Jesus. Don’t even get me started on the tattoo. :/ Let’s take it back to that realness.

Mobb Deep — Quiet Storm

In the late 1990s, not many alliances in hip hop were as deep as the one between Mobb Deep and Nas. Growing up together in Queens, the three rappers relied on each other early in their careers. When push comes to shove, they had each other. But, when Mobb Deep signed to G-Unit, they had to go against Nas.

50 Cent and Nas have been feuding ever since 2002. Their feud stems from Nas’ association with Irv Gotti and Murder Inc. Records. Because of that, 50 Cent and all of G-Unit Records has a feud with Nas. When Mobb Deep signed to G-Unit, they, too, had a feud with Nas. Now, it was been revealed that they are no longer on G-Unit Records.

Usually when an artist leaves G-Unit Records, they branch out. When Game left the label, he collaborated with Ja Rule, Nas, and Fat Joe. Young Buck expressed interest in working with Game and Ja Rule when he was kicked out of the G-Unit group. Seeing how Nas was a longtime ally, it is easy to imagine Mobb Deep and Nas reuniting.

Plus, 2009 has been full of twists, turns, and reunions. With Nas set to release a new album in 2010, he may call on Havoc and Prodigy.

That’s the station where he started -in 1990- what would later become the Stretch and Bobbito Show, which many consider the best show ever.The guy NORE used to call “the albino ostrige” recalls a number of great moments and a greater number of (then) unsigned rappers who blazed the show : cats like Jay-Z, Eminem, Big Pun, ODB, Big L, Biggie, and also a 16 y.o kid in shorts named Nasir…

Mobb Deep Feat 50 Cent – Pearly Gates

In light of 50 Cent coming so close to finishing his last album for his longtime home of Interscope Records, he has been letting his G-Unit artists run loose. The only artist signed to G-Unit/Interscope is Young Buck. As far as the other artists, they have one-album deals with various indie labels.

The status of Mobb Deep has been in question for some time, a few months ago, Havoc revealed that they were still signed to the G-Unit imprint. However, only minutes ago, 50 Cent revealed that he has released them from their contract. There have been rumors of a feud between 50 Cent and Mobb Deep for a few years, now.

Back in 2005, 50 Cent proved that he had a business mind when he took his small G-Unit label and had it sitting upon the top of the hip hop game. He grew the roster to unexpected heights and he had everyone performing at their peak. Among the most impressive acts on the label was The Game. Out of all of the artists, he showed the most promise.

However, once The Game acheived success, he began feuding with 50 Cent. Before long, diss records were being exchanged and 50 threatened to shelf his next album. To avoid all of this, The Game left G-Unit Records in 2006 for sister label, Geffen Records. Once that happened, everyone assumed that The Game was no longer signed to G-Unit Records.

On his sophomore album, Doctor’s Advocate, The Game repeatedly says that he is no longer signed to G-Unit Records. Clearly, it states that he is signed to Geffen/Interscope on the packaging of that album, along with LAX. Despite what the facts state, 50 Cent claims that Game is still signed to G-Unit Records. In other words, he has made money off of every album released by Game.

While 50 Cent is a businessman first, he is a very proud businessman. Never would he allow any artist that he is over to collaborate with anyone that he has an issue with. There is no secret behind the fact that he hates Ja Rule. No matter how much he hates Game and no matter how few times they even see each other would he have allowed Game to collaborate with Ja Rule.

Back in 2007, The Game was featured on Ja Rule’s song, “Sunset.” Had he really been signed to G-Unit, 50 Cent would have stopped that record from ever being recorded, along with every other 50 Cent diss that appears on Doctor’s Advocate and LAX. He did not stop any of this from happening, even though he could. According to 50 Cent, Game never left G-Unit Records.

Aproveitando o ensejo do último “Bonus Post” aqui do blog, posto sobre o maior diss da história do rap. “Hit ‘em Up” do Tupac contra Notorious B.I.G. & Cia. (Lil Kim, Puff Daddy, Mobb Deep, etc.) exala ódio, rancor e, entre verdades e mentiras, mitos e fatos, o rapper representante da West Coast leva a rivalidade para além da Route 66. O clipe segue uma linha debochada, contrapondo o peso da letra da música e da batida. Letra da música.

Med risk för viss konspirationsteorinivå (långt ord), postar jag två videos om samhällets tillstånd, från två amerikanska rappare, Ill Bill från Non Phixion (med Premo) samt Prodigy från Mobb Deep. Eftersom att de är från USA, får man sätta på sitt konspirationsteorifilter vid lyssning. Men i kontrast till 50 cent, Jigga och de andra miljardärsmurfarna kan man ju konstatera att Nas hade fel. Hiphopen är nog inte död. MTV intresserar sig inte för den riktiga musiken längre bara.

Also, the quality of this freestyle is different; We recorded without the use of a booth. We had to find a way to get it done regardless.
