The 2nd beta version of Opera Mobile 10, for both the Windows Mobile as well as the Symbian version been announced and released by Opera Software team. The browser pretty much loaded with new improved updated look, tabbed browsing, password manager, speed dial and different other impressive goodies. The windows version of it also comes with support for Arabic and Hebrew websites, meaning left to right rendering works great with the browser. Including that it also comes with more increased auto rotation support and faster loading time.
With Symbian version users can now use the default key for input characters that is write in own native language when searching on Google or writing a mail.
Opera focus this time was to get to as many people as possible and that is why they came up with the bi-directional language support and the ability to input native characters. There main focus is to get millions of Arabic, Chinese’s and Hebrew users.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (November 30, 2009) – Now mobile visitors to Everest’s website can access campus and course information or begin the enrollment process to become a student from virtually any web-enabled cell phone, smart phone or other mobile Internet device.

With the launch of its mobile-optimized version of the website, http://m.everest.edu/, visitors can locate a nearby campus complete with map links and directions, review career training programs, check out online classes, see financial aid options, view frequently asked questions, request more information, as well as learn about student services, student resources, accreditation information, and the admissions and enrollment processes. There’s even a “Call Us Now,” option that integrates the mobile browser with the user’s phone’s dialer, allowing for easy, safe dialing.

“We noticed that over the past 12 months, mobile traffic has been the fastest growing segment of our web properties,” said Teresa M.

Looking at how I use the iPhone, I prefer native apps especially if there is data input to be done because they can influence the input fields displayed on the tiny keyboard area to be field specific. This supports making it a lot quicker and easier to input data – especially email addresses.

So now.. talks about the semantic web have been around for ages, you can find lots of resources online but we are still waiting for the big break through that mobile computing and twitter had in the last 12 months.

Now it seems like the next logical step is to bring both together: if all fields would be correctly marked up mobile browsers could react and display appropriate input field to make it easier in a limited space displaying fields at still a good size. There have been keyboard adjustments already for jailbroken iPhones to allow other keys than the standard set to be displayed. Maybe displaying a more useful set would help as well.

HTML5 Canvas for mobile apps

Recently I’ve been getting up to speed with HTML5 Canvas. Along with other HTML5 technologies

Recently I’ve been getting up to speed with HTML5 Canvas. Along with other HTML5 technologies ( i.e. geolocation, database) I can see real potential for developing interactive mapping applications using just HTML5 and Javascript technologies. I’ve already done some experiments that attempt to simulate feature control using Canvas. (An effort inspired by the pixastic project.)

I was very excited then to discover support for HTML5 Canvas has been growing for mobile browsers as well as desktop browsers. Could this open the way forward for high fidelity mobile maps that do not rely a on super fast data connection? It is certainly the case that managing application state on the client is more scalable and consistant with the stateless architecture of the web. And of course a web application is more portable across different devices, well in theory, at least.

So I set out to see if I could port a simple Canvas application that allows a user to draw freehand (or free finger?) on an image with Opera Mobile and iPhone Safari. The desktop version of the app works on Firefox 2, Safari, Opera and even recent versions of IE. IE does not itself support Canvas but the brilliant excanvas.js manages to port the Canvas API to IE VML, a reasonable workaround until Microsoft finally get fully onboard the HTML5 omnibus . Watch out though using the
onmouseout
event on the canvas object – IE triggers this event everytime you leave a VML cell. After a lot of head scratching I eventually found replacing
onmouseout
with Microsoft’s
onmosueleave
solved the problem.

As you can see viewing the page source, using the canvas API itself is straightforward. Simply add an HTML canvas tag to the body, being sure to supply alternative text for non compliant browsers.

<canvas id="canvasimg" width="250" height="250">
This demo uses the HTML canvas object. You'll need a browser such as Firefox 2 or Safari to use the demo.
</canvas>

Then initialize the canvas with the image you want to draw on.

var img = new Image(255,255) ;
img.src = "http://.../testimg/test1.png" ;
var newCanvas = document.getElementById("canvasimg") ;
var canvasContext = newCanvas.getContext("2d") ;
var newimg = canvasContext.drawImage(img, 0, 0);

Then implement a method to handle the mousemove event on the canvas object.

if ( drawMode == true )
{
var xy = getxy(e, newCanvas ) ;
c.lineWidth = 1;
c.strokeStyle = '#000';
c.fillStyle = '#00A308';
c.tertStyle = '#DDD';
c.strokeFill = 1; //outline shapes
c.fillRect(xy.x,xy.y,5,5) ;
return ;
}

The only thing I struggled with was getting the mosue position relative to the Canvas object . The getxy() function achieves this using some code I lifted from the awesome CanvasPaint app. One thing I added though is yet another catch for IE. It seems IE only provides values for the
clientX
and
clientY
property on
window.event
. If you pass in another event such as
mousemove
you get null. The following line catches this ensuring the getxy() function works for IE aswell.

var ev = e || window.event;

Interestingly, getting the finger position using the iPhone touch API was much easier and I was able to drop the getxy() function. More on that below.

Getting the app to work on the mobile browsers did present a challenge, mostly due to the default handling of finger touch gestures and mapping these to standard Javascript events. For standards compliant Opera Mobile at least, the code was exactly the same as it was for the desktop browser. Standard Javascript events such as
mousemove
and
mouseup
were interpreted as you would expect. Well at least they would have been if it had not been for the infuriating Text Selection toggle. It seems that while the Text Selection mode is toggled Off the touch events perform default behaviour which is scrolling for mousemove and opening the context menu for mousedown. You would think the
event.preventDefault()
function would cancel this behaviour ( as it does for iPhone Safari) but that did not work for me. I tried some other techniques such as adding listeners to the window node and calling
event.stopPropagation
but eventually gave up figuring life was too short. This means that for the Opera the user has to manually switch on Text Selection mode before they can do drawing on the image. A similar problem seems to occur on the Android Webkit browser, except it is much worse as the “Text Select” toggle only lasts for one touch before reverting back to default behaviour. More investigation required, I think.

For iPhone the standard mosue events are replaced with iPhone touch events – e.g.
touchmove
for
mousemove
,
touchstart
for
mousedown
etc. The only problem was that there was no obvious way to simulate
mouseout
. Getting a fix on the finger position was much easier using the touch API. I could get rid of the bulky getXY() function and simply use the
targetTouches
array that API helpfully includes as a property of the event:

c.fillRect(e.targetTouches[0].pageX ,e.targetTouches[0].pa
geY,5,5) ;

Otherwise the code was similar to the desktop version with
e.preventDefault()
blocking scrolling and zoom behaviour when the user is drawing on the image. I found that the Android WebKit browser also worked better using Apple’s touch API rather than regualr mouse events, which was a surprise. However the
e.preventDefault
didn’t seem to help with the Text Select problem in Android.

The screenshot above illustrates the main problem with using HTML5 canvas on mobiles. Performance. Even running on relatively high spec iPhone 3G ( 600Mhz) processor the draw line is a bit grainy. In this example, the issue is more likely due to the way Safari implements touchmove (i.e the frequency of the event being triggered as the finger moves ) than clock speed. When the image is zoomed up the line is less grainy suggesting the event handling could be optimized. But on slower devices such as the 201Mhz XDA Orbit the processing speed is problematic even for this simple application. For more complex applications that manipulate every pixel in the image, such as the feature selection app shown below, even the iPhone struggles. To get reasonable performance on the iPhone 3G I had to switch from touchmove to touchend to reduce the frequency of redraws.

Summing up, I think canvas on mobile browsers is an exciting prospect, but not yet easy to port across devices with different browsers and specs. By the way, I never managed to get the IE version working on Windows mobile.

Screen shots from the new Opera Mini 5 In case you’ve never heard of Opera Mini, it’s a java-based w

Screen shots from the new Opera Mini 5

In case you’ve never heard of Opera Mini, it’s a java-based web browser whose features have grown over the years to include grabbing pictures (Some phones’ browsers don’t or don’t grab all pictures), speed dial bookmarks, web page compression (Saves data fees) and the ability to view web pages as they would appear on a PC without resizing them, just to name a few.

I downloaded the beta version of Opera Mini 5 recently and overwhelming is an understatement. I’ve been a fan of the Opera Mini mobile browser for roughly three years now. I started off with version 3 because I was told by a (Stupid) friend it was all my phone could handle. I ended up getting 4 a little while later and discovered it ran perfectly. I was very impressed with all the improvements in Mini Opera 4 and it felt really advanced. But using 5 has now totally blown my mind. The best way I could describe the transition between them is Opera Mini 3 to Opera Mini 4 is like changing OS from Windows 95 to Windows 98 SE. Changing from Opera Mini 4 to Opera Mini 5 is like changing from Windows 98 SE to Vista (Without all the fail).

Firstly, let’s start off with overall appearance. Opera Mini 5 has an almost futuristic look to it. The GUI is actually what I’d call “beautiful”. The speed dial shows thumbnails of all the websites stored on it. The menu’s appearance is sleek and smart. Everything is animated too.

On the functionality front, Opera Mini 5 scores full marks. The GUI isn’t just pretty to look at though; it’s also highly functional and well put together. Everything is logically placed and navigating the menu system is a charm. Though I was new to Opera Mini 5, I was immediately able to access anything I wanted on this highly user-friendly menu system. Opera Mini 5 also supports tabbed browsing which makes your mobile internet experience that much more enjoyable. And just make your day Opera Mini 5 also includes a myriad of shortcut keys for even easier navigation.

If you haven’t ever used Opera Mini, then do yourself a favour and go to the Opera Mini site and download Opera Mini 3. Use it for a while. Then download 4 and use that for a while. Then download Opera Mini 5. Only then will you truly appreciate the feeling of awe that Opera Mini users around the world felt when they first used 5.

Personally, I think Opera Mini 5 is the finest piece of mobile software I have ever seen. It is definitely superior to any firmware mobile browser I’ve seen and I’ve seen many. The best part about this product is that despite all the work put into it and the level of its quality; it’s still free and will hopefully continue to be.

It’s been a busy summer and fall on a number of project fronts. This time of year also marks a big push for one of our favorite clients, Arapahoe Basin Ski Area. In the annual “Race to Open“, the folks at the Basin have been working hard in preparation for opening day. In addition to preparations on the mountain, the marketing team along with their AOR, Adrenalin and BSM have been jamming on a few projects in anticipation of the 2009-2010 ski and riding season. First steps included the implementation of a website face-lift. Even more exciting was the release of A-Basin.mobi, a version of the website optimized for mobile devices.

A-Basin.mobi | Get Your Snow On The Go

The project was on-track for mid-October, the anticipated target for opening day at both A-Basin and Loveland. When the race escalated following early snow fall and colder conditions in the high country, opening day was moved to October 9th. The night before, final preparations were completed and the mobile site was deployed. Site traffic immediately swamped the mobile site and is increasing by the day; so far so good.

While some aspects of mobile technology are simplified to balance the range of mobile browsers in use, the challenges transparent to most reside behind the scenes. To streamline content management, BSM’s development team integrated the mobile site with a pre-existing content management system (CMS). This resulted in an upgraded CMS that enables A-Basin content owners to manage content in one source, but deliver to both the main and mobile site versions. Another priority in doing this was to add the necessary customization to tailor the delivery of content to mobile device users but not interfere with the user experience for main site users. Pretty slick if you ask me…

Other aspects that few will appreciate is the detection and routing of users to the appropriate site, based on browser. Arapahoe Basin is now promoting a mobile-specific URL, A-Basin.mobi, but has long-standing URL’s that had to be dealt with. All existing domains were re-wired to direct users to the respective site version, based on browser detected. Also cool, in a nerdy sort of way.

In the end, a big win for all involved, including you the next time you’re crawling in I-70 traffic and jonesin’ for pow. In addition to Snow Conditions and Web Cams, the mobile site also features Runs Open, Events, Season Passes, Tickets, Media and Contact information.

We welcome feedback too, so let us know how it works for you or if you have suggestions for future releases.

See you on the slopes.

Some turn out well; others do not. Everypoint — a turn around — did not. Here’s why.

In the spring of 2008, I joined Everypoint as interim COO, after nearly 85% of the original VC investment had been spent by the previous two CEOs. During my first weeks people at our target customers — mobile phone makers like RIM and Nokia — told us they did not believe that Allan MacKinnon could invent what he claimed; an entirely new platform for developing apps for mobile phones that (a) were stunningly beautiful, (b) consumed virtually no battery, and (c) ran on 92% of the phones in people’s pockets, i.e., “feature” phones.

“Write once, run anywhere” had been promised for years and never delivered. It was clear the only way to prove we could do what others could not do was to

hunker down and get the product finished.

By the winter we had done just that; and we were then able to create stunning apps in a matter of days. The doubters were now believers; they were impressed that Allan had done what no one else had been able to do.

But, though they were impressed, they no longer cared.

Why? Because their world had dramatically changed with the overnight success of the Apple App Store. The senior execs of our target customers had instructed their troops to come up with their own app store on their own “smart” phones. Suddenly no one cared about feature phones anymore.

For example, Motorola was a natural to buy Everypoint; their fledgling mobile unit could have leap-frogged their competition by rapidly adding the Everypoint software onto their entire line of feature phones. But their new CEO, Sanjay Jha, faced a huge cultural challenge and he rapidly decided on major surgery, basically killing their entire feature phone line, and “betting the farm” on the Android smart phone technology, packaged as Droid.

Yes, Everypoint delivered on the product promise we made. But by the time we delivered, it was simply too late. The feature phone market had passed us by.

Everypoint is working on selling its core underlying technology. Who should buy it? Any company that wants to compete with RIM / Blackberry’s hugely successful “push / synch” capabilities without violating RIM’s patents.

I regret Everypoint did not turn out as we had hoped. I prefer turn around gigs that eventually have nice exits; like my first interim assignment, at Eink. And I prefer start up gigs that eventually grow into industry-leading companies, like my second interim assignment at Ember. But I met some great people on the Everypoint assignment; people I hope to work with again down the road.

Are you mobile browser addict that tired and bored using the damn famous Opera Mini? Even Opera Mini

Are you mobile browser addict that tired and bored using the damn famous Opera Mini?
Even Opera Mini has reach their 5 version, (still in beta) but it’s a impresive development. Most people only know that Opera is the only one web broser for their handheld. This post show that Opera Mini just one of many web browser for your mobile phone. Opera Mini not standing alone buddy.

UCWEB Browser

The UCWEB Browser home display just like Opera Mini version 4 or below. Compact and simpe to use. But UCWEB Browser is better on tabbed browsing that allow user to open various website on the same time.

Online media playback function is available in UCWEB 6.3. You may watch the hottest TV channels and the splendid original video clips, as well as listen to the latest popular songs on your phone with UC Browser 6.3.

If you are using two or more email account of Google or Yahoo then doing it from one browser could be more hectic as it is little difficult to type username and password from mobile key pad . So, Lets move towards our second option, UCWEB. Its well and good browser which have option to resume download if it fails due to any reason. Beside that it provides convenient way to copy and paste any urls or contents.

UCWEB also support RSS, google search, online media streaming.

Bolt Browser

Bolt built using Webkit core as same as Apple’s Safari. Bolt is the rising rival for Opera Mini. With their bunch of new feature on their Beta 3. You can enhance favourite site and rearrange your favorite entries using the ‘Grab’ feature, automatic detection of device security capabilities, ability to disable images, non JSR-75 Build for BlackBerry platforms, improved support for file upload feature, BlackBerry-specific settings confirmation improvement for Preferences page and so many features lies.

Bolt also comes with the lite version which created in response to user requests, to allow Bolt to run on resource-constrained mobile devices with limited memory, CPU power, and bandwidth. While not as feature-rich as the regular version, BOLT lite features a small footprint (~140 KB).

Visit web | Download Free

TeaShark Browser

Just like Bolt, TeaShark using the webkit as web engine not only support multitab browsing, but colorful tab. Color tagging helps user to keep favorite pages organized. There are 8 pre-defined colors from which user can choose from.

There’s an intelligent mouse for easy navigation. The cursor jumps to the next link to click, saving you the trouble. Navigate as fast or slow as you need with page up and down, left and right shortcuts. Jump to content: the display snaps to the text you’re reading.

SkyFire

Skyfire is the only mobile browser that supports full Flash and Windows Media videos, including Flash 10 and Silverlight 2.0. It’s awesome.

But unfortunately, currently, Skyfire runs on Windows Mobile (smartphones and PPC) and Nokia N and E Series (Symbian S60, 3rd Edition) phones. Where is for Java?

Visit web | Download Free

The wellknown Firefox goes mobile? Yes, They said all Firefox feature build for your handset are ready to smack the Opera Mini down.

Built on the same core technology as Firefox, Fennec has many of the same great features as the desktop version including tabs that let you browse multiple sites at once, one-click bookmarking to quickly organize websites, the Awesome Bar for super-easy navigation, a growing collection of add-ons that let you customize your mobile browser plus, Fennec boasts a touch-enabled interfaced optimized for the small screen.
