 I was looking for something to start my blog (yes, finally with my name on it) and, as I interact with thousands of young people in a week’s time, week after week, I decided to go scouting for new products that have a potential of creating a following- something low cost that keeps up with the needs of the users as a top priority. (Yes, there are still people around who do not (cannot) use the oh-so-cool touch screen technology.) So let us take a look at what is going on beyond the iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerrys of the world.

What makes a product good? Sleek looks, good technology, great features, low cost and something that keeps saving the buyer money ever after. LG India’s three new phones are just the right blend. However, what caught my eye, was the innovative use of technology that sets it apart, giving the buyers the most bang for their buck not just with the cost of the phone, but rather the integration of Bluetooth messaging and preloaded RockeTalk application that continue to save money for the user for the life of the phone. Why do I like Bluetooth messaging? Well, for the region these phones serve, ‘WiFi enabled’ does not really make sense. – there is practically, no WiFi access.

Why do I like Bluetooth messaging? Low cost+good looks+data enabled= Perfect student phone. And where do students use text messaging most? These kids like to multitask all the time. Most times while they are sitting in class (read with in Bluetooth range of each other) and cannot use voice. So why not enable unlimited free text messaging that uses Bluetooth? With me yet?

Moving beyond the 30 feet range- it gets even better… for when they can use voice give them the RockeTalk , a mobile social networking application. OK, it is the watered down version of Rocketalk. RockeTalk is known for voice and video messaging platform. Of special interest to students- it’s voice chat and video chat and also gives instant access to all the IMs- Yahoo, GTalk, MSN, AOL, ICQ. Hey, thats what everyone wants. Its right there at their fingertips. no need to download, just click on the logo! Word of caution- an unlimited data connection is recommended. Hey- but it works just fine on WiFi. So if you do happen to have access to WiFi, then even the data costs are zero!

Other features include front loudspeaker, MP3. MPEG4 player, 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x zoom.

Betcha, even LG did not know this one- both RockeTalk and the Bluetooth technology have something common- the common link is Rajiv Kumar. Rajiv, IIT Mumbai, made significant contribution to the Wireless and Bluetooth (Widcomm) technology and, is also the visionary behind RockeTalk !

Jumbuck Entertainment has released its mobile chat and flirt service, Power Chat, as an iPhone application. It is available for immediate download in the Apple App Store for $2.99.

Using Jumbuck’s global user base, Power Chat users on the iPhone and iPod touch can have instant access to a mobile community, even people who are not using an iPhone or who are on a non-iPhone carrier. Power Chat for iPhone allows you to chat and share photos.

“Power Chat for iPhone represents the first true cross-country, cross-carrier mobile chat and flirt application launched in the Apple App Store,” said Adrian Risch, CEO of Jumbuck Entertainment.

It is said that instant messaging is devoid of emotions and fails to communicate what you are feeling, but a new study suggests that just as with talking face-to-face, the emotions communicated via instant messaging are contagious.The person could also assess their online partner’s mood.

During the study, involving 44 pairs of volunteers, the participants were asked to chat online for 15 to 20 minute, find out more about each other, and discuss something that was worrying them.

One person in each pair was also asked to view watched either a harrowing scene from the film Sophie’s Choice, or a clip from another film depicting small talk. The researchers observed that each participant could accurately assess their partner’’s mood, reports New Scientist magazine.Moreover, those paired with someone who had watched Sophie’s Choice felt sadder than before the chat.

Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, has claimed to have new information of upcoming iPod refreshes and iTunes updates. In the video above, Rose outlines what rumors have been going around the blog-o-sphere recently, and confirms that some of them have substance behind them, also claiming he has ’seen’ pictures of the next iPod nano. Among the claims:

- Revamp of entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign (see above)
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the $199 iPhone.
- iTunes 8.0 (“it’s a big update w/new features”).
- Blu-Ray support coming in Mac OS X 10.5.6

Rose claims that all of the above is coming sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. Interestingly, Rose also notes that the revamped iPod touch will be the first and only device to ship with the 2.1 software. Apple will then release the 2.1 update for iPhone, “shortly” after. The 2.1 software is rumored to include ‘Push’ capabilities which will integrate with Apple’s remote cloud to form the new ‘Push Notification Service’. This service is said by Apple, to keep a persistent IP connection to applications that need it, (for example, Mobile Chat 3), to provide status updates when an application is closed.

After saying this, Apple recently seeded a beta of 2.1 to it’s developers, and surprisingly had completely removed all ‘Push’ capabilities from the version of iPhone OS.

One of the most anticipated applications of the year has been submitted to the App Store for review and approval by Apple. The application was submitted on July 24th by the developer, but unfortunately the application is still not available on the App Store. The question is, why?

Famed to be one the best mobile chat clients available for iPhone to date, and with support for all of the major chat networks, MobileChat 3 is set to be a hit. From the developers press releases, you’d think nothing was wrong, but there obviously is;

Here’s what I can tell you:

1. Put the conspiracy theories on hold. We’ve long maintained that we have no indication from Apple that they’re intentionally ignoring us, and that’s still true.

2. The application “calls home” so to speak every time it’s launched, this isn’t some invasion of privacy, it’s a server based application and by nature, it needs to call the server every time it’s opened. With that said, we can do a bit of monitoring to see what’s going on, and as far as I can see, Apple has not opened MobileChat. We have no incoming connections from devices other than the few ad-hoc testers we have.

3. I’ve put in an email to Apple a few minutes ago to see if they can give me anymore information. If and when they get back to me, I’ll update this post and let you know the deal.

With all of that said, there is a bit of a silver lining here. Since we’ve been continuously delayed, we opened up our “beta” program a bit more to get other people involved. The feedback has been fantastic. Now, MobileChat is not perfect, it’s far from perfect. The ad-hoc users have uncovered quite a few bugs that we were not aware of and we’ll be fixing and giving an update version to Apple so you guys don’t experience them.

There are a few reasons Apple could be holding back the application. The obvious two being malicious code or defamatory behavior. The third? – Apple. Apple could be holding MC3 back, in light of a future addition to Apple’s native iPhone application’s – iChat.

Usually application submissions take up to 10 days to complete, and that’s with the application being available on the App Store, within that 10 day time period. So, by my numbers, that means MobileChat 3 should of been available to buy, on August 3rd.

Currently, MC3 has been in the application approval process for 17 days, and counting.

… Maybe I’m just another conspiracy theorist. -_-
