So David talked me into investing in Apple’s MobileMe for my iPhone a couple months ago and although I was a little hestitant about dropping $100 for the annual service fee at first, I’m super glad I did. Not only do you get a super fluid, super fast email system that is designed especially for the magic phone, the automatic, wireless syncing of my contacts, calendar, and email not only serves as a really cool back up system, I have access to all three at MobileMe’s online portal as well.

I recently had to have my iPhone replaces (it was still under warranty so I get it free) and because I was a MobileMe subscriber all I had to do when I turned my phone back on was wait a few minutes and my email, calendar, and all of my contacts were synced to the new phone. I didn’t even have to back anything up from a SIM card. I thought that was super cool. As a mobile professional, being able to stay on the go, and sync all my important information wirelessly is just a huge time saver and keeps me on the go and staying productive with my time.

The only things I would say I didn’t like about the service is that the only email portal is really, really lacking. There is no text editor and you can’t change the fonts at all. You can’t even bold anything which I think is really tacky and so behind the times. If I’m going to paying for any type of email service this needs to be improved sooner rather than later. Also, you can only access MobileMe online from Safari or Firefox. You have absolutely no access via Internet Explorer, which is my web browswer of choice. So that’s a major downer to me too.

I’m still a big fan of the service and I’m super glad I signed up for it. It’s a business expense for me and it really does help me be more productive by saving tons of time double entering contact information. It’s a relatively new service so I’m expecting there will be upgrades and improvements to the service as time goes on and I’m paid up until September of 2010 so we’ll see where the service is then and I’ll decide if I want to renew my subscription then.

Mobile Me adds Google Wave and Voice access to usurp Apple MobileMe.

Digital media software developer Babya today issued a bold challenge to rival Apple, by upgrading its Apple MobileMe rival, Babya Mobile Me to include quick access to Google Wave and Google Voice.

The move to introduce the second version of Mobile Me with Google Wave and Voice access is for added value and to usurp Apple’s own $99 MobileMe and they don’t give you access to third party services like Google Wave and Voice.

CEO of Babya, A.A. Fussy said “Apple and Google just don’t agree over Voice (but we like the sound of it)-not even on their $99 MobileMe, so we’ve added access to that and Google Wave to ours”

The new version of Mobile Me is now available to access at:

New logos designed to stop the media confusing our connected service suite “Mobile Me” with Apple’s $99 “Mobile Me”.

Babya today unveiled 2 logos:
-a chat icon with the words “mobile me” in the center of it
-a lightbulb with “works with mobile me” underneath it

These logos prevail any attempts by the media and the press by tarnishing the reputation of our free “Mobile Me” service by reporting the $99 “MobileMe” as Mobile Me.

Additionally, this announcement prevents Apple from introducing a “made for MobileMe” program.

Babya’s A.A. Fussy said, “Babya has ensured that they shouldn’t launch anything similar-we have great praise for Apple but do not like how the by the media and the press are confusing their “MobileMe” by calling it “Mobile Me”.”

With iPhone 3.1 update came syncing of subscriptions in iCal via Mobile.Me to iPhone alive. Apple claims it was a long term wanted feature. I can agree with that. But I can’t agree with Apples solution.

Apples way to sync is a “all or one” solution, I can view all calendars or one at the time.

If I view all my iPhone calendars it gets impossibly cluttered with all mine + all subscribed calendar. If you only have a few calendars this is no problem, but if you keep track on people at work, family, friends and football games it becomes, not only cluttred, but also extremly slow.

This image shows how I use iCal at work and in my laptop. I have five calendars on my own and subscibe to my wifes two calendars and my teenagers public calendars. At office I keep track with the people I work with. By arranging my subscriptions in groups, it gets very handy to snap them off or on with a click. I can easily check if my plans for the evening interfere with the rest of the familys plans, and the same thing at work.

This is exactly the way it should work in iPhone too. Pronto.

Maildienst funktioniert ohne Probleme
Adressbuch synchronisieren funktioniert ohne Problem

Jetzt funktioniert wieder alles!

compressed desktop files

Yes, your Mobile Me account is an easy way to collaborate with clients and other professionals. Sure, you can use other services such as box.net or yousendit.com. But, if you already pay for a Mobile Me account, then you have a great FTP service at your fingertips.

Let’s see it in action.

Count and compress your files and log in to me.com are the two steps to sending files using your Mobile Me account. First, identify how many files you need to send. If you only have one file to send, then jump ahead to the log in step.

compress a group of files

But, if you have a project file and several art files, or several video files for review to send, then you need to compress those files into a handy .zip file. With a Mac, compressing files is very simple. Just select the files you want to compress, right or control click on the group and select “compress” from the pop up menu. Your Mac with automatically compresses the files in to a neat, easy .zip package and you’re ready to upload to Mobile Me.

log in to Mobile Me

Step 2, log in to your Mobile Me account using a web browser of choice. Remember that you can log in to your account from any computer, so you can FTP files from your MacBook Pro laptop or Mac Pro workstation depending on where the files live. No dealing with slow internal networks or jump drive juggling files is necessary. Next, head over to the iDisk icon and select “Public” from the menu. I usually make a new folder to upload the .zip file to keep things organized. Select the upload icon from the top tool bar and select the .zip file from the location on your drive of choice. Once the file is uploaded, select the file and then select “sharing options.” The sharing dialog box is loaded with helpful features. For example you can email the shared link directly from dialog box. You can also set a password for sensitive files and set a time for the shared link to expire. Get options for professional users. Hit “Share” and your file is live.

How easy was that?

Mobile Me Sharing Options

You recipients are now one click away from the file(s) you want them to use or review. Management is easy and you can even use the links in your HTML snippets for easy web sharing on your website. At $100 a year (that’s about $8.33 a month), Mobile Me is a great value for professionals who need a flexible and easy to use FTP, email and basic hosting solution.

I recently turned another year older and I have been working feverishly to sort out the content I’d like to share with you all. For my birthday I splurged and dropped my Blackberry for an iPhone 3GS. I just bought a new MacBook in March and so now my calendars, contacts, notes are synching beautifully with the MAC’s Mobile Me feature. Gotta love it. I have been exploring various iPhone applications and so far my favorite are: 1) Tweetie- to help me manage my multiple Twitter Accounts 2) Exit Strategy – an app that helps you determine not only what subway to take but which car to stand in that will bring you closest to your desired destination. Wow!

For my birthday I enjoyed a few nice dinners around the city with friends and family and celebrated with some friends at the rooftop bar on the Upper West Side. Thanks to all of you who sent me birthday wishes and who participated in the festivities.

My favorite surprise of my birthday was the hand designed b-day card I got from my friend Katie. She is so talented, sweet and thoughtful and so I’d like to showcase her card on my blog. Check this bday card out! If you want to learn more about Katie check out her website and/or blog!

My macbook pro had some severe problems a couple weeks ago (see Is Applecare Worth It?). As a result I was without my macbook pro for a couple of days and needed to find a way to be productive at work. I had a SuperDuper backup drive, but in the perfect end to the tech week from hell, it too failed. Thanks a lot Western Digital. I was left with nothing but my old iMac and MobileMe. Here’s my experience:

1. iDisk. This feature allows you to store files in the cloud. Fortunately my work files were backed up there. I was able to easily create links to send to clients for easy download. Most of the time I was able to download files from the cloud. Occasionally, though files failed to download. After repeated tries of logging out and back in I would eventually be able to get the file. Another annoyance with iDisk is its lack of compatibility with file types. Some files just fail to upload. I’m not sure why but its annoying because every time it tries to sync an error box pops up. You just have to move the offending file out of the syncing folder in order to get rid of it. Grade: C.

UPDATE:

Here is another problem I have discovered with Mobile Me. The iDisc does not have the ability to sync files from folders on you hard drive. What you have to do is work with and save files in the local iDisc (a copy of the cloud iDisc that lives on your computer). Here are the problems I encountered.

I use colored folders to help me quickly find files. Over time those custom icons for folders were replaced by the pale blue default icon.

I kept getting a 0KB file called “Icon” in each of my local iDisc folders. What I eventually discovered is that these first two problems were related. Upon sync, Mobile Me was placing the Icon file in my local iDisc. This held the information regarding colored icon I’d put in for the folder. When I deleted the Icon file my folder color went with it.

Time Machine DOES NOT back up the local iDisc copy! This is insane. The whole point is a safer backup system not less safe.

Apple needs to fix this. You can sync mail, calendars, notes, etc. through Mobile Me but not files. A simple UI similar to selecting playlists and movies in iTunes to place on your iPod would be perfect. Allow me to choose what files I want synced in the cloud. Updated Grade: D

2. iPhone syncing. This works flawlessly for me. Its easy to setup on the iPhone and has never failed me. I recently replaced my iPhone and walked out of the Apple store and within minutes had all my contacts, calendars, and mail on the new phone. Grade: A+

3. Website Host. I host my family website through MobileMe. I have my own URL and it was easy to setup and easy to upload changes through iWeb. I don’t get Google Analytics or great SEO tools, but this is not its intend and I don’t need it for a family site. Grade: A

4. Mail. This is where things really get bad. I was unable to send mail from my work account which is setup through Google Apps. In the Mail app I’m able to setup mail rules and send from whatever account I want. These rules don’t sync to MobileMe so I was left with only being able to send mail from my MobileMe account. This is confusing to clients and and unprofessional. I have the same complaint on the iPhone. To make matters worse, Mail was buggy. I had lots of problems sending mail and adding attachments. I was able to read my mail fine, but the rest of the experience was pretty bad. I would not use mail through Mobile Me again unless forced too. Apple should feel embarrassed by how poor this functions. Grade: F

5. Calendars. I don’t use the to do functionality of iCal so I can’t speak to that. But I was able to view my calendars and add new events. The only annoyance was I didn’t have access to subscribed calendars. Minor annoyance for me. Another downside is that I could add attendees to new events from MobileMe. I don’t do that often but it should be there. There was also no way to enter alarms and reminders. I can do it from my iPhone but not from MobileMe. What is there works but there just should be more features. Grade: C-

6. Contacts. Contacts were also buggy. As you can see below the names were a jarbled mess. When you could make out a name you could click on it and it worked as it should but this was ridiculous. Grade: D

A Jarbled Mess

Overall: For my normal usage of Mobile Me it is worth the cost of $99 a year. It gives me easy website publishing, great syncing with my iPhone and an emergency backup of critical work files. It also allows me to sync selective data between my macbook pro and iMac. But MobileMe fails when you have to use the web interface. Its buggy and unreliable and does not even do the limited functionality it has well. Apple should address these issues immediately and bring the cloud experience up to par with the desktop experience. When they do that not only will it make more sense to spend the annual money, but it might make more sense to buy their upcoming netbook type device that will likely depend heavily on cloud services. Overall Grade: D+

You know that new “Find My iPhone” feature? It works. You’ll enjoy reading this entertaining story from Kevin.

Here’s how it starts…

Myself and two compadres, Ryan and Mark, are in Chicago (each of us for the first time) to attend Brickworld, the world’s largest Lego convention. Yes we’re a bunch of dorks. Yes you totally wish you were here too.

Last night, after seeing Second City improv, we ate at a pleasantly sketchy dive bar in uptown Chicago, where the food was mediocre and the characters were questionable. I definitely had my iPhone while at our table, and I definitely did NOT have it (whoops!) when we were 100 feet down the street.

I raced back into the bar, not even particularly concerned, but it was gone like baby. In less than five minutes, with very few people in the small place, my beloved JesusPhone had managed to vanish into a black hole. Our waitress was sympathetic, and I left a number, but I was immediately glum about my prospects of seeing it again.

So I felt like about zero cents, but then we giddily realized that I had *just* activated the brand-new Find My iPhone service. Even better, Mark had a Sprint (yes, Sprint) USB dongle giving him Internet access over 3G on his MacBook Pro. Excited to try it out, we hopped onto me.com and clicked the Find My iPhone link.

After reading the story, you might agree the Mobile Me feature is worth it, too.
