The iPhone user interface shown would let users customize incoming alerts for their credit card as well as email the issuer to query a transaction or contact customer service.

Contactless mobile phone payments lets you place your handset next to a POS terminal to authorize the transaction. If the transaction is less then 20 euros you will not need to do anything further. If the transaction is greater then 20 euros you will be prompted for a password.

Visa also reveal that they are testing a payment application that would live on a SIM card.

Recombu captured the demo in a video you can watch below…

Sony Ericsson were once one of the most popular handset makers in the world. They had a long string

Sony Ericsson were once one of the most popular handset makers in the world. They had a long string of hit after hit, culminating with the (still superb) Sony Ericsson K800i. With the still-growing popularity of the Walkman series of phones, they’re one of the best-known feature phone manufacturers in Europe. However, is all of that about to change, and with horrific results?

News surfaced today that the Carphone Warehouse is to stop offering the Sony Ericsson Satio, due to instabilities within the software. Naturally, SE are working quickly on a fix and Carphone Warehouse will restock the device when it’s up and working properly.

You would assume that this is not that big of a deal then, as some phones (most notably Nokia’s) seem to be released too early for most people’s liking, with the first set of phones being seen as ‘test’ devices – advanced prototypes, if you will. However, it may surprise (and worry) a few of you to find that this is definitely not the first Sony Ericsson device to be recalled on a massive scale.

a worrying trend

In the past 3 years, there have in fact been 3 Sony Ericsson devices recalled by the manufacturer and “issues” with the handsets have been acknowledged.

The first recalled device was the Sony Ericsson K850i, spiritual successor to the K800i. It was nowhere near as good as its predecessor, featuring fiddly touch-sensitive soft keys, slow interfaces, and a pretty average 5mp camera that didn’t improve much upon the 3.2mp offering on the K800i. Around 6 months after it was released, the phone was phased out of the networks stores and Sony Ericsson were inundated with devices being sent in by angry users complaining of the non-working soft keys and buggy firmware.

Next to suffer the public’s wrath was the C905. Another flagship camera phone, it was an 8mp offering that was actually very impressive. It still has one of the best cameras seen on a phone despite having 12mp competition around these days. Sadly, the firmware was the problem this time – with Sony Ericsson recalling the devices earlier this year.

And now we come to the Satio. This too is a flagship phone, although its intended to be a jack-of-all-trades. While not only being a master of none, the phone doesn’t feature a 3.5mm headphone jack as seen on all high-end phones these days, and the UI is a heaily adapted version of Symbian, more commonly seen on Nokia devices. While most recent Nokia devices are having a few small issues with firmware and such, with the N97 being the biggest case of this (suffering both firmware and hardware issues, which have been resolved now) Sony Ericsson have reported the software being the issue. This would suggest that the problems lie in the software they themselves have included.

These are very worrying times for Sony Ericsson I would imagine. Not many manufacturers have to recall 3 devices in the same number of years – and the more this happens, the less confident consumers will be in choosing their handsets over someone else’s. At least they seem to be on form with the Xperia X10 (running Android) and Kurara (another Symbian device) – although I wouldn’t like to speak too soon.

Do you own a Sony Ericsson device? Are you satisfied with how it performs, or have you had plenty of issues with it? Feel free to leave your stories in the comments section.

via The Knowledge Network [with thanks to Katrien Pype for the tip-off] Are mobile phones the modern

via The Knowledge Network [with thanks to Katrien Pype for the tip-off]

Are mobile phones the modern equivalent of Jack’s magic beans, bringing health, wealth and happiness wherever they are scattered? Recent studies might make you think so. According to a 2005 paper by economist Leonard Waverman and colleagues at the London Business School, each 10 per cent increase in mobile phone ownership in developing countries produces an additional 0.6 per cent of growth in gross domestic product per person. Similarly encouraging figures featured in a more recent Harvard case study on Indian fishermen, which showed how the fishermen increased their profits by around 8 per cent by using mobile phones to call coastal markets from their boats.

These and other studies suggest that mobiles can revolutionise the way subsistence farmers and nomadic tribesmen trade crops and livestock. It’s fabulous PR for mobile-phone companies, which see developing countries as offering millions of new subscribers. But how realistic is the idea that mobile phones are an absolute good for the developing world?

I find myself on a day away from work wondering whether I should have my mobile phone switched on or off.

It’s the contact number I give to anybody and everybody, but I don’t really want to hear from work, or about work…unless I’m there.

My travel and accommodation contacts for holidays, anything to do with the car or any writing competition I enter are all given my mobile number so it means there is no contact from them if it’s switched off.

Okay, so I see ‘work’ on the display and I then have to decide if I answer it or not. How many of us can resist knowing what the call was about? I would like to think that any call on my time off was important, but knowing those I work with, they have different priorities to me.

The wonder of the latest smartphones could be set to increase over the coming years. This week’s revelation surrounds the possibility of Xbox 360 and PS3-quality graphics being implemented for mobile phones.

At a recent expo in London, Qualcomm has suggested that its graphics chips will be capable of rendering games console-style visuals over the next few years. This will be music to the ears of multimedia users who value their mobile phones as more than just a means of communication – it is their primary form of entertainment.

The evolution of micro chip design is set to give mobile phones the platform to access and power significantly larger gaming platforms. Such developments suggest that the consumer market should brace itself for the ultimate in handheld gaming devices over the coming years. This would most certainly interest the younger generation who have taken to the latest handheld games consoles such as the PSP and the Nintendo DS.

Qualcomm expects to be producing mobile chips powered by a dual-core processor over the next couple of years as well as mobile chips with dedicated 2D and 3D graphics. Nevertheless, Qualcomm’s developments will only be significant if the mobile manufacturers and games publishers work together to make an ultimate gaming mobile device a realistic possibility.

Apple’s iPhone 3G S still has tremendous untapped potential in the entertainment sector and its versatility and power mean that despite reservations, the very latest entertainment mobile handsets are not very far away. With sophisticated games and applications available for download on your handset, the capability to power 3D games is a mouth-watering prospect.

After finding out my phone contract would finish within weeks I started spending more time with “bellen.com” and youtube reviews than I did with my family, unfortunately my studie suffered under neglect while my relationship with the internet got better and better.

Eventually I ended up ordering an iPhone in combination with a 2 year tmobile contract. I doubted very long about this choice but I thing it was a good one. What was the biggest reason to not buy the phone was the price, after a little calculation I found out tha the costs lie around 720 euro’s in two years, when staying under your minutes from your contract. These are 150 minutes in my case, not too much. But what is the reason I still bought it?

The first and biggest reason is the diversity, you have perfect internet acces at all times, and the huge amount of applications available make sure that you won’t have the same phone for longer than a week. Also the simple, quick and effective way of controlling the phone was a big plus for me. Although most of the apps (applications) don’t have any use at all (for instance “the beer app” where you see a full pint of beer on you screen, and when you tilt the phone, the glass will empty) there are also a lot of usefull apps. The TomTom app tells you how to drive to your destination over the entire world, and translators and dictionaries can make you life easier when studying.

I think the iPhone will help me as much as it will amuse me with it’s useless apps. I only hope tmobile will hurry up sendig it to me.

With Airtel now supporting Twitter for all subscribers, using short code 53000, the Twitter space in India got a lot more exciting. 110 million ready mobile subscribers (and counting) for Twitter integration. Indians are compulsive text-ers and Twitter will automatically enable them to communicate better.

Indians with mobile phones can be categorised into two basic kinds; those who use Twitter and those who will use Twitter. At the moment, the latter category seems to be in the majority. While this could be because of myriad reasons, Airtel and Twitter’s lack of big-bang messaging doesn’t seem to have helped the cause either.

The ability to use Twitter without access to the internet or even a computer, is what makes Twitter ubiquitous and successful worldwide. But how does one get started? We have outlined a quick step-by-step guide to using Twitter (with the right commands) from your mobile phone. Remember, Twitter (in India) is presently enabled only for Airtel mobile phone subscribers. Also, please note that the Twitter command are NOT case-sensitive, feel free to use them any way you want.

If you are new to Twitter:

[text to 53000] Hi Twitter
- twitter sends instruction message -
[text to 53000] SIGNUP
- twitter sends instruction message -
[text to 53000] username

If you’ve signed-up for Twitter from your mobile phone and want to access your messages (as well as your profile) on the web, then you can do so by accessing this link – http://twitter.com/account/complete

If you are on Twitter but haven’t used it from your mobile phone:

- twitter sends instruction message -
[text to 53000] username
- twitter sends instruction message -
[text to 53000] password

Once you’ve completed the sign-up process, you can start tweeting.

Sending your first tweet:

Once you’ve registered your mobile phone on twitter:
[text to 53000] message

Each time you tweet, you’ll need to ensure that your messages are less than 140 characters (including spaces and special characters), otherwise they will be truncated by twitter.

Commands from your mobile phone:

I guess when you are soon going to be part of Google, why give arch-nemesis, Apple and its iPhone any airtime. AdMob is in the process of being acquired by Google for $750 million. The report has some interesting facts about Android and gives a rough breakdown on the success (or lack there of) of various different Android devices. As always, the data from AdMob which serves display and text ads on 15,000 mobile websites and applications, is limited in scope but is broad enough to be a barometer for the larger market trends.

* HTC has taken an early lead, thanks to availability of three different devices.
* Motorola Droid launched on November 6 already represented 24 percent of all Android requests in AdMob’s network worldwide even though the device is available only in the US.
* Worldwide requests from Android devices increased 5.8 times since April 2009 in the AdMob network.
* In the US, Android has 20 percent share of smartphone traffic versus 7 percent in April 2009.
* The Motorola CLIQ generated 6% of Android traffic worldwide as on November 18th 2009.
* Worldwide requests from RIM devices increased 44 percent over the last six months in the AdMob network.

Just to be sure, AdMob does include data about iPhone in its report. the iPhone and iPod Touch collectively accounted for about 33 percent of total requests up 6.9 percent for the month. In US, the total share of Apple is about 35 percent, up 7.5 percent for the month.

“Eyes could kill me each time I walked about the streets with my handset,”

says Siri Nchise, a 29‑year‑old customer service representative for an Internet service provider in the African city of Douala, in the Littoral Province of Cameroon. In the past five years, she’s had three cellphones stolen. She keeps buying new ones, because they are the only practical way to connect to friends, family, and business associates.

On a continent where rolling blackouts, undrinkable water, and fetid mounds of refuse remain the stuff of everyday existence, wireless telecommunications services stand out as a rare, perhaps unique, technological success story. Tens of millions of ordinary Africans just like Nchise carry cellphones today, something not even the richest of them could have possessed barely a decade ago. And every month, millions more dial into the 21st century, with profound implications for African economies and societies.

It might come as a surprise that sub‑Saharan Africa— with 34 of the 50 poorest countries on Earth according to the United Nations—is now the world’s fastest growing wireless market. But there’s no arguing with the statistics: the number of mobile subscribers in 30 sub‑Saharan Africa countries, not including South Africa, rose from zero in 1996 to more than 82 million in late 2004, according to the latest figures from the International Telecommunication Union, in Geneva. The rate of growth for the entire continent has been more than 82 percent per year compared with the 33 percent annual growth rate in the Americas; in Cameroon, Kenya, Senegal, and Tanzania, growth rates are running in excess of 300 percent. Nigeria, Africa’s largest country, with 140 million inhabitants, has only about 500 000 landlines, or approximately 1 for every 280 people. In that country 19 million mobile phone subscribers have signed on since 2000, and the Nigerian Communications Commission projects the total number of subscribers to grow to 50 million by 2010.

Africa is going wireless for a very simple reason: its national telecommunications monopolies are poorly managed and corrupt, and they can’t afford to lay new lines or maintain old ones. So in most sub‑Saharan countries not even 1 percent of the population have landline‑connected telephones. That compares with more than 10 lines per 100 people in Latin America and more than 64 per 100 in the United States. Indeed, Tokyo and New York City each has more fixed‑line telephones than the whole of sub‑Saharan Africa. These numbers are even more daunting when you consider that fixed lines tend to be concentrated in capital cities, leaving rural communities totally bereft. For instance, while the country of Senegal has about 140 000 lines, 65 percent, or 91 000, of those lines are in the capital city of Dakar.

More than just inadequate landline networks and institutions are fueling Africa’s wireless boom. Growing political stability has helped to attract foreign investors to a region decimated by civil wars over the past 50 years. And the far simpler logistics of getting a wireless network up and running are also an enormous factor in sub‑Saharan Africa, where even the seemingly straightforward can turn out to be anything but.

During our recent travels in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and our home country of Cameroon, we’ve seen why wireless networks have succeeded so spectacularly where landlines had failed so miserably. Landlines can take years to install even after the right palms have been greased, while you have only to buy a handset and prepaid cellphone calling card to get a wireless line. In addition, companies can erect base stations that cover a radius of 35kilometers for much less than it would cost to run copper cables from central exchanges to every customer’s phone.

But that’s only part of the story. The African cellphone revolution thrives on a combination of a novel business model introduced a decade ago in South Africa and some clever calling tactics that have made cellphone usage affordable for a large segment of the population. As a result, growing numbers of Africans at the top, middle, and even bottom rungs of the economic ladder depend on the wireless sector for their livelihoods. But can the region sustain the wireless sector’s phenomenal growth rates and accompanying prosperity? And does the capital flowing in and out of these countries via transnational wireless corporations represent a sustainable infusion of desperately needed foreign investment or neocolonialism dressed up as a free market bonanza.

Research concerning mobile phones and financial services in developing countries has undergone rapid growth in recent years. This paper seeks to improve understanding of this expanding research area and in so doing consider the potential for mobile phone applications for the delivery of financial services for the poor.

The current state of knowledge is assessed by reviewing the content of 43 research articles drawn from both peer-reviewed academic journals and non-peer reviewed studies and other practitioner-orientated sources. A framework is developed that categorises and analyses the research according to a socio-technical spectrum, identifying levels of analysis and differentiating research activity according to a lifecycle model that incorporates financial needs, design and applications, adoption and adaptation, and impact.

Positive aspects of research to-date are identified, most noticeably the high level of practitioner involvement in research publication and the strong links that have been forged between the mobile phone industry and the research community. This, however, has also caused research to become too narrowly defined and largely a- theoretical.

Hence, research weaknesses and gaps are also identified suggesting that issues relating to financial needs and the measurement of impacts have been comparatively neglected, whilst application design and adoption have received greater attention. Emphasis tends to be on devices and new ways to deliver services, but ignores the broader context of financial services for the poor and tends to be technology-led. In order to correct this imbalance in research, the paper identifies key research gaps relating to concepts, methodologies, issues addressed and evidence presented and provides pointers to future research directions.

and this?

I don’t really see any difference. Both are either a) art forms that required much practice and dedication or b) sad wastes of time. They are the same thing.

Bearing in mind Phones 4U last campaign centered around a misfit town of losers, wasters and the generally retarded perhaps they shouldn’t be deciding who is popular and who isn’t. What if you slip below the required number of friends in your phonebook? Will Alexa Chung come round and personally take your phone off you for not being cool enough? Do they have to be real friends in your address book, or will the names of 0898 Thai hookers suffice?

Lets test the popularity of Phones 4U, shall we?

Well I suppose I have to brag about it. It’s probably unsafe. But who cares.

Today, as a sort of semi-joke I said to my parents, “I should get a new phone. I’ve had this Nokia since Yr 9!” And to my surprise they said yes.

So at first I pretty much had my sights set on the Nokia N97 (I always liked Nokia) then a sales rep showed me the Samsung HD which totally had me hooked, especially at its amazing camera and stuff. But then another rep told me that in order for the Samsung HD to basically be fun, you have to be constantly linked to the internet, and to do that it would be cheaper to be put on plan, and I want to stay with Optus Prepaid.

Then the same (2nd) sales rep told me about the Blackberry Curve 8500 (I’m pretty sure that’s the number) and then introduced me to the Optus Blackberry Turbocap Prepaid offer. Since I was on Turbocap already, it’s gonna be the same amount of money, but I get to have 12 months of free internet and email from the Blackberry.

So, I said yes.

Then my parents said yes.

Within 30 minutes I was trying to get the battery in and updating all my contacts (which ended up taking over 2 hours because I’m a bit pedantic about the neatness of my contacts) and then tomorrow I’ll put on some music so I actually…won’t have to rely on the funny midi noises to know when someone is calling me.

Okay, well, I’m happy.

Oh and finally, I might be getting a Telstra prepaid number so I can text Telstra prepaids with the 1c text thing. If I do, I suppose this blog will know about it.

Alex.

Recently had need to install the built in email application in order that I can email contact details. My normal email mode is to use Gmail but that has no access to the phones contact details as far as I understand. Had no problems (other than the usual) setting up the email but was then left with the email setup shortcut permanently on my home page. I polled a few of my learned colleagues , ex Psion, Symbian, T-mobile … they all scratched their respective heads. After a bit of searching on the web I’ve found what seems to be the answer here:

For you who don’t know, invisibleSHIELDs are military grade scratch proof screen protectors made for a number of devices out there. In my opinion they’re great, and most reviewers seem to agree. There are some epic videos out there of them being demoed (see below) – outstanding protection and performance. Plus, it covers screen and body. I’m definitely going to have to take the plunge!
