El ministro de Industria, Turismo y Comercio, Miguel Sebastián, asistió a la inauguración y expresó el respaldo del Gobierno a la telefonía móvil mediante la segunda edición del plan Avanza, que cuenta con una inversión de 1.500 millones, y se espera que cree al rededor de 200.000 empleos.

Sebastián anunció también que se ha llegado a un acuerdo para unificar todos los cargadores de móviles, una medida que irá en “beneficio de los usuarios y del medio ambiente”.

Almost 60,000 attendees, 2500 media and a press office the size of half a football pitch…just how do you get your message across at the now (in)famous Mobile World Congress held every February in Barcelona?

Well its simple isn’t it:

You use a large PR machine that throws enormous amounts of time, resource and money at the challenge. You only start talking to your audiences five days before the event and are mystified why they are too busy to talk back to you.

You fire a shotgun of (sometimes irrelevant) information at the over worked, over tired, mostly non-mobile savvy and almost certainly hungover journos in the vain hope some of it might stick. It’s the media relations campaign with the turning circle of an oil tanker.

And guess what? It happens every year without fail; Armies of PRs dotted all over the outer limits of Barcelona in, let’s say, somewhat questionable accommodation (amazing considering they booked it in January!!!) living on bottled water, bread, cured meats and Cava.

Here are our tips to consider at this stage in your congress preparation …

1. Rebook your hotel for the next year as you leave the hotel on the Saturday.
2. Hire a private driver for the entire congress which is much cheaper than taxis in the long run… and there is a good chance that the driver will actually be there.
3. Have people on the ground that speak Spanish and liaise directly with the local council and suppliers
4. It’s a great help to work with people who have been attending congress since mobile phones came in any colour as long as its black and the future was very very bright

I wonder how this news will be met by others…Michelle Williams, Samantha Ronson…the family. Is anyone going to refute the tape? Lindsay and Heath’s relationship was never made public or else it was very new and they never had a chance to go out publicly. What do you think – were they an item?

I’ve been on about this on Twitter a bit lately as it’s something that is really mystifying me.  We bought a Nokia ‘Comes With Music’ phone a little while ago now, having seen it at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year.  When we got it home we found out that, because we’d bought the phone a week before the advertising campaign started, we weren’t entitled to our free tunes.  And we’re not the only ones.

I have spoken to a few people, mainly by accosting people on the street, who tell the same story.  There are others that claim the service is tough to use and increases in price the more you use it.  I don’t know how representative those views are but the figures speak for themselves.  A recent article claims that, although Nokia says it sold 3 million units by end April, only 32,728 had used the service in the UK by the end of July.

It strikes me that a great many of the millions of us that bought a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic or Nokia N96 may have fallen the victim to the ‘ad campaign’ loophole.  The public new about Comes With Music a long while before the ad campaign started, in fact many of us had been waiting impatiently after Mobile World Congress.

The XpressMusic phone was sold on the basis of Comes With Music, regardless of when the marketing campaign began – removing this privilege negates the reason for buying it in the first place.  Or am I being naive?

I’d be very interested to know how many others have been affected in this way!

Nosotros apostamos a que, casi con toda seguridad, firmas como LG o Samsung sí continuarán con su apuesta por Mobile World Congress como hasta ahora (nosotros incluiríamos también a Palm, ya que necesita promocionar Palm Pre y WebOS en Europa), ya que son las empresas que más visibilidad tienen. Sin embargo, otras como HTC, Acer o Sony Ericsson, por ejemplo, podrían replantearse su estrategia.

It has launched its Long Term Evolution (LTE) advanced self-organizing network (SON) solution. It’s designed to help operators reduce operational expenses on the deployment of their LTE network.

In February, Motorola had deployed an LTE network over which it decided to demonstrate live experiences moving through the streets of Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress 2009. LTE video streaming was part of the display.

Motorola’s advanced SON is a 3GPP Release 8 standards-compliant solution that uses its network autonomics (self-management) research and experience in managing commercial wireless networks. It includes advanced features, improved architecture, and leading algorithms that go beyond specifications in the standards, says the company.

The solution, a feature of its LTE network offering that includes its recently-announced WBR 500 eNodeB, will be demonstrated at the LTE World Summit in Berlin May 18-20, 2009.

It’s an integral part of an LTE network that delivers operational expense cost savings by automating previously manual steps involved in planning, deploying, optimizing, and operating the network. It thus reduces the need for new operation and management resources required to manage an additional network technology (2G, 3G, plus LTE). 

“LTE promises to bring extra capacity and lower cost per bit,” said Paul Steinberg, chief architect, wireless infrastructure, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility.

As the LTE market is soon expected to grow, a Juniper Research report found that revenues from LTE  mobile broadband subscribers will exceed $70 billion globally by 2014. Main markets will be the developed nations of North America, Western Europe, the Far East, and China, which together will account for 90% of the market.

Huawei akan merilis ponsel cerdas dengan sistem operasi Android yang dinamakan T-Mobile G3. Ponsel ini diklaim pihak Huawei sebagai ponsel cerdas masa depan.

Sebelumnya ponsel ini telah dipamerkan ketika hajatan Mobile World Congress berlangsung pada Februari silam. Rencananya T-Mobile G3 akan dirilis pada kuartal ketiga 2009, demikian keterangan yang dilansir dari GSM Arena, Senin (13/4/2009).

Siapapun pasti akan terpesona melihat tampilan T-Mobile G3 yang begitu menawan. Namun jangan kaget jika Anda tidak menemukan perangkat keyboard pada handset ini, karena hampir keseluruhan pengoperasian T-Mobile G3 memanfaatkan teknologi layar sentuh.

A Juniper Research report found that revenues from LTE (Long Term Evolution) mobile broadband subscribers will exceed $70 billion globally by 2014. Main markets will be the developed nations of North America, Western Europe, the Far East, and China, which together will account for 90% of the market. 

According to the report, mobile commerce and payments, the mobile web, and the need to return to economic growth will all drive mobile broadband. Although the recession could have short term impact, it says, LTE’s longer term prospects should not be adversely affected.

Motorola had deployed an LTE network over which it decided to demonstrate live experiences moving through the streets of Barcelona during the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2009. LTE video streaming was part of the display.

Juniper Research found that this new technology will create a connected era for devices such as portable gaming consoles and digital cameras, with vendors already eyeing the prospects. In this way, LTE will bridge the gap between the mobile and consumer electronics worlds.

However, the report determined that there are several open issues that need addressing before the market takes off. Report author Howard Wilcox cautioned: “LTE will offer broadband speeds of up to 100mbit/s or more: this is at least five times faster than the best mobile broadband now and around 20 times faster than most people experience via fixed DSL. The challenge for mobile operators is how to make profits yet keep prices attractive enough for subscribers to sign up. It’s all about the business case.”

LTE is based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), a next-generation radio frequency technology that has high spectral efficiency, and utilizes an all-IP flat architecture. This results in increased capacity and delivers a lower cost per bit, enabling efficient delivery of mobile broadband services to the mass market.

If you’re interested in mobile content, you need to know about MOFILM,which, according to its website, “celebrates the intersection of art, commerce and technology in the fast evolving sector of mobile entertainment,” and also distributes independent film content to mobile operators and content service providers around the world. MOFILM just debuted its first film festival on February 18th and 19th, 2009 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, in collaboration with the Mobile World Congress and sponsored by Chevrolet, Gigafone and Accenture. Mobile film festivals are an essential way of moving mobile content forward, exploring formats for mobile content, celebrating creatives who achieve success in the arena, and developing the aesthetics particular to the format.

For the first MOFILM Film Festival, participants submitted films of five minutes or less. A panel of leading experts selected the short list of five films, and the audience then voted for the winner with their cell phones. Winners were: Best Comedy (Frank Chindamo for English as a Second Language), Best Drama (Tor Kristoffersen for Enough), Best Documentary (The Science of Attraction by Claveski), Best Science Fiction (Star Chicks by Jay & Angela Lee) and Best Animation (Pushkin by Trevor Hardy). The overall winner was a close contest but in the end Frank Chindamo won the Chevrolet Cruse. [MobilizedTV will have an interview/story with Frank Chindamo early next week, so stay tuned.]

MobilizedTV had a chance to interview the MOFILM co-founder Ralph Cochrane, a pioneer of content for mobile and online services.

When was MOFILM founded and how has its mission evolved?

It started two years ago in 2007, the result of a dinner conversation in Chicago between the Sundance Institute and the GSM Association. The conversation went along the lines that the Sundance Institute is tasked with showcasing emerging filmmakers, they have a huge catalog and a number of submissions every year in the short film category. Two years ago, we had a huge issue of needing short, punchy clips for mobile. We asked the question, would it work on mobile? So we created a test at Barcelona. We took five leading filmmakers that Sundance recommended including Dayton & Ferris, Justin Lin (who directed Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift); Corey McAbee (the actor in American Astronaut); and the writer/director Jody Hill, now working with Seth Rogen and Maria Maggenti. That’s how we started. I was brought in because I was the ‘expert’ who knew how to deliver film to the phone. For us, it was a marketing project: trying something out in the Sundance lab style. The reaction was so positive we thought, maybe something is here.

What changes/evolution have you seen in mobile content over the years?

There are lots of changes. The biggest one is that compared to two years ago when people asked, Is this a good idea? We don’t even get asked that question now, because of the iPhone, as well as other phones from LG and others. The device size is no longer a problem, no longer an issue. The networks are much better, so you now can transmit content in that way.

There are ways of monetizing it. Look at the iPhone. You can actually make money off of content. It’s still developing; iPhone is the tip of the iceberg. People are much more aware of mobile also: there are 4 billion mobile phones in the world. It’s not just about content-either. If you can do something people want to share virally, like games or content, people are actually using it. So a lot has changed in two years.

Initially everyone thought mobile content had to be snack-sized in terms of length. Is that still true? Or do you see long-form gaining traction?

I think if you look at what Corey McAbee is doing with Stingray Sam, you can see he’s created content of 10 minutes in length, episodes, and that’s a format that’s becoming more popular. There has been some research done by Nokia to show the average viewing length for mobile TV, which is basically broadcast TV, is about 22 minutes. That’s the length of a 30-minute TV serial. You also have to bear in mind how it’s being paid for. It’s very similar to broadcast TV. There are advertisements, brought-to-you-by sponsorship preroll. It’s different than buying content on iTunes. But the technology and viewing shows that people will watch a reasonable length. People also side-load movies, but that’s probably a step too far for the market around the world.

What was it about English as a Second Language that made it a winner in the comedy category?

We had a review panel made up of the community, the people who create from around the world, so it wasn’t just English- speaking. We had people from Brazil and China. I think a couple of things about this entry really worked: it’s shot very well for mobile, it’s close-up, and it’s a topic–men and women interacting–that you can relate to . Oh, and it’s funny. I was slightly surprised, because I thought animation might win since it has less spoken dialog, and we had animation with no dialog at all. Overall, English as a Second Language won pretty narrowly over the animation genre because it wa a funny, well written script.
