Este año el cantante estadounidence lanzó su séptimo álbum, “Wait For Me”, con un primer single llamado ‘Shot In The Back Of The Head’.

El último videoclip animado lanzado esta semana por Moby pertenece al tema ‘Once Time We Lived’ y su protagonista es Little Idiot, un personaje creado que ha aparecido durante toda la promoción del disco “Wait For Me”.

In honor of seeing Neko Case at the Moon tonight, I am going to take a look back at many of the live music shows I have seen over the years. Some good, some, well, not so much. From the Big Sombrero to Jannus Landing, U2 to De La Soul, I have seen some weird, wild stuff.

Starship. There. I said it. My name is Lyssa and Starship was my first concert. I went with my sister. We saw them in Peoria, a city that was not built on rock and roll. I wanted my first concert to be Loverboy or Prince — two shows I have since seen — alas, it wasn’t meant to be. (For the record, I only saw Loverboy in 2008 because they played after a Tampa Bay Rays game, and they sucked.)

U2. The first time I saw U2, it was the Joshua Tree Tour, 5 December 1987 (the day after my birthday!) at Tampa Stadium. My boyfriend bought my ticket ($18.50, I still have the stub, of course), and I ended up breaking up with him before the concert. We traded tickets (I got the good ones), so I got to sit with my friend Jenny, whose dad drove us to the show. Fantastic. Amazing. Awesome. I consider this my first “real” concert. Seeing U2 in that stadium was one of the best times of my life. Seriously. I also saw U2’s Elevation tour at the Ice Palace on 1 December 2001. Another birthday gift ($110), and another boy — this time I was just about to break up with him. I guess I should be glad I didn’t go see U2 in Tampa this year.

Depeche Mode. So many Depeche shows, so many good times. Of course, I remember the show I couldn’t go to because of a freakin’ hurricane. Thank you, Hurricane Wilma, for canceling the kickoff show of DM’s Playing the Angel tour. I promoted the show with this great piece I wrote for the Miami New Times, and scored a free ticket and access to the band. Fuck you, Wilma. Well, I will always have the World Violation Tour, the Devotional Tour, and the Exciter Tour, but I will always remember the one that washed away. Wait, I will also remember the Devotional Tour, when I was in the second row and made eye contact with David Gahan as we sang “Stripped” and danced as one. *sigh* Yes, that makes everything better. Phew.

R.E.M. The Green Tour was a fun show. It was our senior year of high school, right before we graduated, and I went with a bunch of my girlfriends. It was at the USF Sun Dome, which isn’t the best venue, but it was still great to see R.E.M. It just sucks that my most vivid memory of that concert is of the drunk guy who almost puked on me. I jumped out of the way just in the nick of time.

Lollapalooza. It was the 9 August 1991, and I had just moved to Boston. My friend Holly and I scored free — and awesome — tickets to go see the festival at Great Woods. Siouxsie and The Banshees were on that tour, but didn’t play because the bitch got sick. We did get to see Jane’s Addiction, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T, the Butthole Surfers and the Henry Rollins Band. Well, I slept through Living Colour — until the hippies began throwing sod and I got hit in the head. Not cool. Anyone who knows me knows how much I hate being dirty (when I’m not prepared to be dirty; camping doesn’t count).  I was wicked cranky until Perry Farrell got on stage. “Jane Says” made it all better. Oh, here’s a photo from a yacht part I went to with Perry. It was during WMC in Miami, and Sasha & Digweed were the DJs for the party on a boat. Sweet.

The Lemonheads. I met Evan Dando when I was living in Boston, and I had a huge crush on him. I was very excited about going to see him at the Masquerade in Atlanta. I went with my crazy friend Kim, and I lost her two minutes after we got inside. I didn’t care. I was used to it. I had staked out my spot by the stage and I was going to stare at Evan during the entire show. I bonded with some girls around me and had a great time. After the second encore, the lights came on and a woman came on stage, grabbed the mike and shouted, “Is there a Lyssa Oberkreser in the crowd? Lyssa?” OMG. It was my moment. Evan recognized me and wanted me to come backstage! OMG. The girls around me screamed and boosted me up on stage. I was giddy. The lights were on me and everyone knew that I was special. Evan picked me!  {flutters} Um, yeah. Not so much. It wasn’t that at all. It was my friend, my drunk friend who passed out backstage, and I was called upon to claim her drunk ass and take her home. KHAAAAAN!!!!!!! (The second time I saw the Lemonheads was at Jannus Landing, and I ran into my friend GeorgeAnn, which was very cool.)

Moby. On tour for “Play,” you wouldn’t think that Moby would put on a good live show, but it was fantastic. Great outdoor courtyard venue, perfect weather, and good friends. But the meat! My G-D, the meat! There I was, watching Moby the vegan while choking on the smoke and smell of grilled meat. There had to have been about 10 sausage vendors around that courtyard, and it was impossible to get away from all of the smell of burning dead animals. Un-freakin’-believable.

Elvis Costello. The absolute worst show I have ever seen in my life. Seriously. It was at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in 2004. I went with my friend Nick (“Hey, Leese! You wanna smoke some marijuana and go see Elvis Costello?”), and I fell asleep. Elvis only played ballads (awww! He was in wuv!) and it was a crowd of older people, meaning that I could hear beeping hearing aids throughout the show. BO-RING. Hated it. Huge disappointment.

Prince. When I was in the 6th grade, I begged my mom to let me go see Prince. Of course, she said no. I had no idea what a “pocket full of horses, Trojan and some of them used” meant, but I thought Prince was hot and I loved him. Flash forward 20 years. My friend Nick had an extra ticket for Prince’s 2004 Musicology tour at the St. Pete Times Forum (“Hey, Leese! You wanna smoke some marijuana and go see Prince?”), and I was beyond excited. Awesome show. Definitely in my top 5 favorite concerts of all time. Prince performed for nearly three hours. It was incredible. Good things do come to those who wait.

Wilco. Saw them twice. Once at the Tampa Theatre, the other time at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater. Both shows were fantastic. Great venues, great band. Wilco puts on an awesome show when the members aren’t too high.

Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. Wow. Nothing like saving the best for last. Not the best show. Oh, no. The best story, for sure. The entire night is enough for a solid book chapter. Here you will get the sweet and condensed version. I hadn’t really eaten all day, I did some serious bar-hopping (and stuff) before heading to the show at Club Downunder, and I fainted. Yep. First time I ever fainted. I once experienced the almost-fainting thing, but I had never fainted before the night of Sharon Jones. Listening to the opening act, I started to feel it. I had the tunnel vision going on, it was closing in, and I could no longer focus on the fiddle and accordion players on stage. I was going down. Only, I thought I could fight it. I fought something, or someone. I have no idea how long I was blacked out, I just remember waking up on the floor. A friend was holding my glasses. Some kid was handing me a bottle of water. I could see my date’s feet next to me, but I was too dizzy and too embarrassed to look up at him. I fainted. In public. I was that girl. Mortified. Well, at least I didn’t puke or piss myself, right? The good news? I fucking rallied like a champ and didn’t miss one note of (the very short) Sharon Jones. ROCK ON!

Here’s to a good show tonight, with good friends, beautiful music, and no fainting!

I love Anne Hathaway as the young girl struggling to make something of herself in The Devil Wears Prada.

I wish they did #2 movie, I loved watching her dress up in different fashions, deal with a bitch of a boss and make something of herself.

I think it’s every girls dream to be a success.

We love reading books about girls that are successful.

We enjoy watching romantic comedies and movies where the female character is someone who is strong, smart and witty.

Meryl Streep was awesome as the bitch from hell boss in this movie.

I’ll bet she had fun doing it too!

I also liked one of Meryl Streep’s other movies, Death Becomes her, with Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis.

That movie kept me in stitches and I can watch both of them on DVD’s over and over again!

FASHION DEVIL WEARS PRADA Anne Hathaway

Mr. Moby, for some reason, I have been quit captured by this musical marvel of late.  My taste for the musically obscure (Moby) has only broadened  and furthered my love of music.  Can anyone tell me if this is a genuine and worth cause to find comfort in the obscure?

Lady Gaga performs on Gossip Girl tonight, thereby sealing her fate as the very latest in a long line of musicians raising their Moby Quotient.

For the uninitiated, the MQ, first coined by the Washington Post a few years ago, “determines the degree to which artists besmirch their reputations when they lend their music to hawk products or companies.”  The algorithm was named after the DJ and electronica mastermind who inexplicably sold every single track on his 1999 album, “Play,” to advertisers – and further enraged many of his fans by appearing to be cool with it.

In Moby’s wake, many seemingly “principled” artists have followed, and the results have been devastating.  I’m sure that none of us have been able to escape hearing One of the Best Flaming Lips Songs Ever bastardized on those ubiquitous Mitsubishi ads.  But it gets worse: did you know that the group’s “Yeah Yeah Yeah Song” was featured in a salad dressing commercial?

The first time I heard The Fixx’s “Saved by Zero” featured in a Toyota ad, I be-booped my TiVo in disgust to make sure my ears hadn’t deceived me.  And the list goes on: Aerosmith for Guitar Hero. Sting for Jaguar. U2 for iPod.

Now, I know that capitalism is alive and well and that musicians need to make money just like the rest of us.  I’m not begrudging them their right to sell their work if they so choose, even if doing so makes a mockery out of everything they stand for.  My problem with the commercialization of great songs is not that it happens.  It’s inevitable.   But like a parent refusing to come to terms with her teenager’s meth addiction, I just don’t want to know about it.

So here’s what I’m asking of the artists in question: If you’re going to sell out, warn me first.  And I mean literally.

The FDA requires that all drugs be labeled with information describing potential side effects.  Along those same lines, song tracks ought to come with electronic warning labels:

WARNING: “Ego” by Beyonce will be featured in advertising campaigns for Nivea hand cream (December 2009), Clorox disinfecting wipes (February 2010), and Hershey’s Kisses (Superbowl Weekend 2010).

By forcing artists to ‘fess up, you become a more powerful consumer.  When you stand teetering on the edge of an impulsive music purchase, you at least know what you’re getting yourself into.  And if you do decide to pull the trigger, you can plan accordingly.

If, for example, I get a helpful heads up that my favorite Yo La Tengo song will soon be appearing in cell phone commercials nationwide, I’ll at least feel I can prepare myself, load up my DVR queue, and go on a commercial hiatus until the ad campaign ends.  Simple as that.  The musicians make their money and the songs I enjoy aren’t tarnished forever in my mind.

It seems like a solution we can all get behind.  FCC, are you listening?

Grizzly Bear

The New Year’s Falls Music & Arts Festival, Pyramid Rock Festival, Field Day, Days Like This!, Big Day Out, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Good Vibrations and the list goes on. Nothing like summer festivals to get out there and check out some extraordinary bands. If you’re going to any of these, lucky you. If not, you might want to consider the odd sideshow or two. I am heading to Lorne Falls Festival again this year and can not wait to kick my boots off and lie in the sun. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Editors and Grizzly Bear are my festival favourits. All of them are doing sideshows in Sydney in early January. Yeah Yeah Yeahs will hit Hordern Pavilion, while Grizzly Bear have just announced the date for their third show at the Recital Hall, as part of Sydney Festival. Second time around, I’m quite keen to see Moby, also performing at Sydney Opera House, and the very fun live  Norweigan electro rockers Datarock. The Temper Trap, Sarah Blasko, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Dappled Cities and Yves Klein Blue are my local favorite picks. And as always, I can’t wait to hear bands I haven’t quite had the chance to hear yet like The View, The Phenomenal Handclap Band and White Rabbits. White Rabbits are doing a side gig at the Oxford Art Factory in the new year as well.

Cat Power

Now, Days Like This! is not necessarily my type of festival, but boy was I happy to see Cat Power on the performers’ bill. I’m a sucker for female singers with breathy voices, and hers is one of my favourites. I will see Cat Power backed by the Dirty Delta Blues (with Jim White from Dirty Three) perform at Waves in Towradgi as her only Sydney (or 60 km south of) side gig.

The Decemberists

I have never been to Big Day Out, but I have managed to catch a few sideshows in the past. This time around I’ll be seeing the Portland, Oregon-based rock band The Decemberists. It’s been a while since I started tracking their tour schedule expecting to see some dates for their, I believe, first ever down under tour. I can not wait to indulge in their theatrical indie folk extravaganza. They will not be doing the Hazards of Love show, which is completely understandable, but a bit sad since I have placed it to sit comfortably within my ‘top 10 albums of 2009′ list. The Decemberists will play at the Metro Theatre.

The next few weeks sees me almost without a break and includes recording both Moby and John Mayer at the Hard Rock Cafe for Q Radio, nipping off to Spain with the Abubilla project, taking part in research for an independent research organisation and also the config and setup of a new rig for a London based producer, including a few days setup at Air. No days off at all for about 3 weeks. About time as well.

It’s like a dream come true. After seeing Moby’s live performance this year at the Heineken Open’er Festival in Gdynia, finding out that he has created a special website where videomakers can get his music free is really amazing.

Just go here: http://mobygratis.com, register and listen to one of the 81 tracks Moby has shared. Some of them are from the B-sides, some come from the movies he made music for, some I guess are from his private collection. Anyhow after selecting one of the songs you would like to use, you have to request the right to use it. Remember that it can only be used for non-commercial purposes. One has to describe where the song will be used, what will the movie clip – be about.

I don’t mind filling in those forms and waiting for the accept. Moby’s idea is to help independent filmmakers not porn industry. Having legal Moby on my video is just awesome. Enjoy!

Sonntag waren wir beim Moby-Konzert in der Großen Freiheit 36 in Hamburg und es war einfach der Hammer. Hammerlaut aber auch hammergut. Nachdem er mit einigen ruhigen Liedern anfing, wurde die Musik immer schneller und meiner Meinung nach noch besser bis zum Schluss ein Rave-Mix von “Feeling so real” gespielt wurde.
Moby selbst hat nicht nur gesungen, sondern auch Gitarre, Keybord und Trommeln gespielt. Einfach faszienierend. Hier ein paar Fotos:
