I was looking at a Modbook ad and found a character I wanted to recreate. Here is a sketch…

Oggi vi illustro una promozione molto interessante da parte di questa società che offre il modbook(macbook modificato) a un prezzo eccezionale: il modbook con prestazioni base costa infatti 699$ ( circa 465€ ).

Il prezzo è molto intrigante ( costa infatti meno di un iphone ).
Inoltre è un ottimo prodotto per i designers.

AXIOTRON sta inoltre lavorando a nuove tecnologie,che tuttavia sono ancora “under development” tra queste ad esempio troviamo il sinerrgy touch.

Es gibt ja die Modbooks schon länger. Modbooks sind von der Fa. Axiotron umgebaute MacBooks. Die Tastatur verschwindet und stattdessen kommt ein riesen Touchscreen zum Einsatz.
Der größte Nachteil bisher war für mich die Bedienung mit dem Stift. Sehr fitzelig, aber selber mal schauen, intuitiver wäre eine Bedienung àla iPhone:

Hier wird angeblich ein Touscreen verbaut, der auf kapazitive Eingaben reagiert (=Finger oder entsprechender Stift).
Schaut also so aus, als käme man dem iPhone näher (dessen Bedienung auch auf kapazitiver Eingabe beruht).

Wer eine Tastatur braucht, holt sich eine Bluetooth Tastatur.
Wer eine Maus braucht, holt sich eine Bluetooth Maus.

Man kann sich auch sein eigenes MacBook (Pro) umbauen lassen, kommt etwas günstiger…apropos: ganz billig ist der Spaß nicht:

• Bei Gravis gibts ein 13″ ModBook um ca. 2.250€ (ModBook bei Gravis)
• Der Umbau eines MacBooks, das man zur Verfügung stellt, kostet ab 1.249$ (= ca. 860€)

As you all know the rumoured, and eagerly awaited, tablet macintosh is predicted to be available next year. But it is little known that the hard work is already done, and has been for some time. Axitron is a company that has developed tablet macs for some time now. The modbook is a modified mac book pro with only a stylus. The modbook retails on their site from $2,248 dollars onwards; available cheaper from certain internet businesses.

The Axitron Modbook actually exceeds the system performance of the original, because Axitron have updated the hardware with a faster processor and control board. Bluetooth keyboards and mice can be connected to it as you would with any normal macbook, providing you with a full computer when you need one.

Code is boring – type out eight lines of HTML code, and the best you’ll get is a white webpage, offering just a few words. Why not just use a visual editor? People like iPhone developers spend hours wading knee-deep in syntaxes galore. Besides, who wants boring old code anyway?

I do, for one very simple reason: the thousands of lines of code which make up the iPhone’s operating system software hides secrets that have slowly drifted to the surface, after being found by developers. One example that came true was a reference in the iPhone 3G software, concerning a future iPod Touch. And, just as the code predicted, a new edition hit the shelves shortly after.

Now that iPhone 3.0 is out in the open, geeks, nerds and developers in general are zealously attacking forums in a bid to get their discoveries noticed. Interestingly, two new Apple products are referenced, as well as possible upgrades to iPhone and iPod hardware.

The two new products are known as ‘iProd’ and ‘iFPGA’. I’d expect Apple to change the names first, of course. Firstly, allow me to address iProd.

At time of writing, the iProd coding reference is followed by ‘0, 1’, implying it’s not yet prepared for commercial availability. Once ready, said reference should be succeeded by ‘1, 0’. But what is this iProd lark all about, anyway? Experts and fans believe it to be a tablet-style portable Mac, not dissimilar to the almost-illegitimate ‘ModBook’.

If such a Mac was released, Apple may have to make a few changes to Mac OS X, perhaps even releasing a specialised tablet version. Features such as the dock and large desktop icons are fine, but the universal menu which lines the top of the screen may require a makeover.

iFPGA, on the other hand, is completely different. FPGA is a tad technical: ‘field-programmable gate array’, as is its full name, has the power to improve apps exponentially. Not many people seem to know the full purpose of FPGA chips, so I’m not gonna pretend like I do.

Verdict

All in all, it looks as if Apple wants to install the 3.0 OS onto more than the iPhone and iPod Touch. Otherwise, why would such references be mingling with the rest of the code? I eagerly anticipate seeing what happens next…

Resistive touch-screens are great when you have a stylus in-hand, capacitive screens offer more finesse when you’re going at it with fingertips, and both are about useless when you’re wearing gloves (for now, anyway). That changes with the projective capacitive screen, able to offer responsiveness to a bare fingertip and also react to non-conductive objects like styli, and it’s that type of screen that Axiotron’s MacBook-based Modbook tablets will be seeing in the near future thanks to a partnership with Touch International. Starting next month, Modbook buyers will be able to add a Synergy Touch screen as an option, while those going for the 15.4-inch Modbook Pro will receive one as standard. No word on what this accessory will cost, but we think it’s a shame the two couldn’t get these things to market before the end of glove season.

As of December 2008 Steve Wozniak joined Axiotron’s Board of Advisors. Axiotron is the creator of the Modbook, a modded Macbook that is a Tablet Mac, with a pen and lack of keyboard.

Muchos Apple fans siguen en la espera de un producto similar a este hecho oficialmente por Apple, sin embargo el mercado es tan mínimo que por el momento aunque siguen las esperanzas los analistas dicen que no te sientes a esperar.

This company is the first to create a commercially available tablet Mac!  Of course, this is a 3rd party modification to the plastic MacBook. They take the MacBook, remove the screen and turn it into a slate styled tablet.  The Axiotron ModBook even has a built-in-GPS!  The Modbook costs $2,250, and you can see all of it’s features etc. here: http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook
But the big announcement was the ModBook Pro which features a 15 inch touch screen, but it costs $5,000-$6,000!

I only have one word to summarize Macworld this year: meh…

Sure, Apple added some nice features to iWork ‘09 and iLife ‘09 (especially in iMovie), and the MacBook Pro 17″ is a good update, but where is the new Mac mini? I was hoping for Apple to go out with a bit more of a bang!

The rest of the expo was just row after row of Mac/iPhone/iPod accessories, as usual, with the exception of Etymotic Research and the Axiotron ModBook Pro & ModBook.

Over the years, I’ve had people who asked me if there’s a Mac similar to a Tablet PC. While the answer is still no if you’re looking for 1st party Apple product, some product engineers at Axiotron have apparently been converting MacBooks into tablets that they call ModBook. And recently, they’ve revealed ModBook Pro, basically a tablet computer with MacBook Pro internals. I’m not particularly fond of these machines, but I suppose some of our illustrator friends out there are craving one, no?
