Mark Farina es uno de los últimos grandes nombres surgidos de la escena de Chicago.  Su particular visión de ese cruce entre el Detroit de Model 500 y Derrick May y el espíitu del Chicago clásico le abrieron un puente de posibilidades en cabina que de momento no tiene visos de quebrarse.

Ma adelante sus producciones de ambient house y el desarrollo del concepto de chill out, con su alias de Mushroom Jazz – con el que empezó a vender cintas de música orgánica- lo pusieron en la cima por pinchar cosas diferentes al house típico de su ciudad natal: De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Soul2Soul, y las primeras copias de sellos primerizos, sonaron en ese entonces, así como Acid Jazz o Talking Loud.

De igual manera sigue pinchando deep house de San Francisco con funky house ardiente de la capital de Illinois en algunas fiestas, así como sus Cd Mix de Mushroom Jazz en Om Records donde se puede apreciar que su registro también puede alcanzar grandes cosas en materia hip hop.

confection are a group who make 80s jheri soul a la loose ends. i honestly didn’t realise for a long time that they weren’t authentic 80s.

daft punk – digital love

kids of the 80s went ‘aaaah…’ when they saw the video to this tune, featuring battle of the planets style anime.

deee-lite – say ahhh

unashamedly kitsch, and psychedelic at the same time.

groove armada and mutya buena – song for mutya

whoever thought they would be describing the chavtastic mutya as kitsch? not me…

keyshia cole – superstar

hate jameila. this is the only song of hers that i could remotely stand so i was happy that keyshia covered it for the us market. clearly, bitter brummie bitches don’t go down too well across the pond, either…

mariah carey – touch my body

eternally 12 apparently…mariah is the physical embodiment of kitsch and youth obsession taken too far. and no i don’t buy the nick cannon thing, that boy just looks uncomfortable to me.

model 500 – the flow

i doubt that derrick may intended to make anything that sounded remotely kitsch. but it so does…

st etienne – who do you think you are

if all of st etienne’s video has been animated kitsch, i think their music would have been more appealing. i liked it, but the oh-look-at-us-we’re indie!-and-quirky! band members ruined things somewhat.

sub sub and melanie williams - ain’t no love

the most cartoonish club classic i can remember – shouldn’t have worked but it did.

Cinq disques dont je ne suis pas certain qu’ils aillent bien avec le soleil de mai. Ou la pluie. Le premier, la BO de Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid par Bob Dylan, bien sûr, est un classique, mais je ne l’avais jamais eu. Je me souviens pourtant de l’effet assez psychotrope ressenti en regardant le film. Il y a là quelque chose d’étonnant, comme un mélange entre un disque de country et un album de Steve Reich. Des parties instrumentales assez crépusculaires, répétitives, donnent l’impression d’un album dépressif et mélancolique, mais qui se dévoile vite comme un étonnant euphorisant, tout en retenue. Lorsque la voix de Dylan surgit, rare, tout se précipite comme en une petite implosion des sentiments.

L’album de Nadja, Touched, est une réédition en vinyle d’un Cd sorti l’an dernier. Cette nouvelle édition est fabuleusement belle, ornée de photos nouvelles, prises par Seldon Hunt qui a pour habitude de capturer une nature d’apparence tranquille, mais toujours insidieusement inquiétante. Le pressage est parfait, dévoile la musique pour ce qu’elle est : lente, lourde, prenante, mais aussi fascinante de densité.

Rien à redire sur la compilation de Model 500, sinon qu’elle vient d’être rééditée et qu’elle est assez impeccable dans son genre.

L’album de Tsé, La Ralentie, est arrivé hier. Tsé est un ami, qui vit à Berlin. Et hier en visitant l’expo Nieves, j’ai vu Isabelle Boinot qui m’en a parlé. Coïnicidence ? En tout cas, après une écoute rapide, l’album a l’air beau, s’envolant vers des territoires différents du dub électronique des sorties précédentes. Tsé y chante comme s’il était en train de faire son dernier disque et c’est ainsi que tous les disques devraient être faits. Et la pochette est somptueuse, impeccable.

Enfin, un disque qui va faire parler de lui dans le petit cercle des adeptes de noise et de bruit : l’album de Dan Friel, Ghost Town, est une déflagration assez insensée, qui évoque une sorte de My Bloody Valentine métallique, une collision entre Kid 606 et Merzbow, mais encadré dans un appareillage presque pop. Ici, sept morceaux forment cet album court, incisif, dont on se demande avec quels instruments sucrés il a été composé. You need to get right, Roland and Yamaha. You need to get right. Juan Atkins is in this band. Without guys like Juan Atkins figuring out how to work your machines and making great sounds with them, they’d be useless crates. You don’t actually think people made tracks like this just by reading your impenetrable manuals, right?

A lot of TECHNO, really.

Classic Detroit techno from Juan Adkins AKA Cybotron AKA Model 500. This is the shit I grew up on. The Electrifying Mojo (an eccentric Detroit radio DJ from the 80s) mixed this stuff with 10 minute versions of Kraftwerk and early, and I mean EARLY Prince.
Ddog is just now delving into this genre and he’s loving it.
