Make sure you are comfortable. Choose the right shoes. If you’re not used to walking in heels, start with a thin two-inch heel, preferably one that you have already broken in. (Later, you can work your way up to walking in higher, less comfortable heels.) If the shoes are new, scratch the soles with scissors so that they will not slip when they touch the floor. Alternatively, you can cover the sole of the shoe with masking tape, if you don’t want to scratch your shoes.

2. Shoulders back

Learn to stand like a supermodel. Practice your posture, throw your shoulders back, and push your pelvis slightly forward. It might create the illusion that you’re leaning back a little, rather than hunching forward.

Train yourself to place the ball of your foot down first, and keep all of your weight balanced there rather than on the heel. It may feel strange, but placing the ball of the foot down first gives you more of an elegant stride than a clunky heel-first walk would. It’s almost like walking on your tippy-toes, the way ballerinas do.

Put one foot in front of the other (literally). Toes should face forward. Your footprints should form a single line, as if you are walking on a rope or a beam. When done quickly, this gives the body that characteristic swing.

Make your stride look long and commanding by lifting your legs almost in the same fashion a horse would. For each stride, you want to lift your foot a good distance off the ground (with a bend in the knee) and then place it down a good distance in front of the supporting leg. Don’t make your strides too large as this will make you look awkward and ungraceful, but make sure you take large enough steps, rather than just baby steps.

A sultry stare

Look straight forward, capturing the essence of the clothes you’re wearing with the expression on your face. Focus on an object straight ahead of you (but don’t stare at a viewer…that is creepy). Keep your chin up and your head still as your body moves down the runway. When you make your turn at the end, let your head be the last part of your body to move.

Fingers naturally curl under when relaxed, but don’t let them! this makes it look like you have NO fingers, especially in pictures. Just let them hang straight down, tense your fingers enough that you can accomplish this.

8.

Develop your own signature walk. There’s no simple formula for walking the runway, and what will ultimately make you stand out is not only how well you can move your body but also how much of your own personality you can inject into your performance to make it memorable. The best way to create your own unique style is to experiment, practice, and get feedback (even if it means taking some constructive criticism).

* Think about why you want to walk and look like a model before you do it. Having the clear goal of looking great and being happy because of it will add to your self esteem. Which in turn will increase your attractiveness through radiating self assurance. If you just go through the motions, it will show.

* Walking in high heels can have serious short-term and long-term negative effects on your body. Whether it’s a sprained ankle from a broken heel or bad knees from years of catwalking, be sure to take these risks into consideration when you decide to use high heels on a regular basis.

* Limit your runway walk to the runway, or at least a smooth surface. Make sure there are no obstacles, bumps, or cracks in your way. Using high heels on an uneven or unpredictable surface could result in you injuring yourself, and no one looks modelesque with crutches.

New member to Miss Online, Delisi Araceli, is no stranger to the modeling profession. She began her acting and modeling career at the ripe age of 14 where she signed with her first agency in San Antonio, Texas. Her career would later take her to Los Angeles, where she lived for 4 years, and the Upper East Side of New York city where she spent one year.

Delisi is both the reining Miss Latina Mexico and Miss Latina World 2008-2009.

Candace Rae is fast becoming a web sensation. Her Miss Online profile page is the second most visited page on the entire site (homepage being the first), and her Blogtv show commands the #1 rank on that website. Her newly launched website has become the daily destination of her thousands of loyal fans and supporters.

Candace has a TV show deal and major magazine spreads in the pipeline. She is one of the hardest working people in the business and we’re glad to have her serve as both the talent director of MissOnline.us and COO of Miss Online LLC.

(Miss Online) Presidential candidate John McCain shocked the world by picking Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate in the 2008 presidential election. Whether this decision turns out to be sheer brilliance or political suicide for McCain is a topic for another blog.

The rise of former model Sarah Palin from beauty contestant to Vice Presidential candidate is quite amazing and should give models inspiration (whether or not you agree with her views).

Sarah was a roaming student, switching from junior colleges, private institutions and public schools first in Hawaii, and later in Alaska and Idaho. During those college years, she did make one electoral bid: at 20, in a red strapless gown with her hair flipped back, Palin won Miss Wasilla and came in second at the 1984 Miss Alaska pageant, taking home the Miss Congeniality award.

Palin entered politics in her hometown in 1992, running for City Council in Wasilla, population around 7,000. There was no police department and a dusty airstrip ran through the middle of town. In 2006 she went on to win the governorship of the state of Alaska, where she currently serves.

McCain selected Palin in hopes of bringing disgruntled Hillary supporters over to the republican ticket. In politics, if you can split the other side, you win. Palin and Clinton do have very different views and the jury is still out as to whether this strategy will work for McCain or cost him the election. Regardless of how this plays out, I think it should give motivation to all current and former models. The show does go on.

Graduate of the UCLA School of Film, Barry Smith began his career in television at the ABC television network. He went on to win SEVERAL Emmy Awards for his work as a director, producer, writer & songwriter!

Become a Model: Tips & Advise

Modeling is a very large industry. Supermodels, or highly successful models, only represent a tiny fraction of models and modeling jobs although they do attract the most attention and publicity. Many women dream of becoming a successful top model but like other creative fields such as acting and singing, the competition for model places is fierce and disappointments are many.

Fortunately, the modeling world is vast and there are opportunities for everyone regardless of age, sex, weight, height, ethnicity or skill set. Modeling jobs cover a variety of fields including fashion, art, glamour, print, web, children, family and the list goes on. Most magazines, books, television commercials and other media related fields all require models based on their own particular needs. However becoming a model is not an easy task based on looks, and looks alone. To become a successful model will require a positive attitude, the ability to accept rejection, commitment, determination, hard work and a good working relationship with their model agency.

Beginners should have their photos up on a portfolio hosting site for models. These websites are generally free to join and upload photos and can get you a lot of exposure. I would recommend having memberships and profiles at ALL 3 of the following websites:

Miss Online
Model Mayhem
One Model Place

The first two (Miss Online and Model Mayhem) are totally free. The third is mostly free but you do get constant messages to upgrade to the “gold membership” (which I don’t think is worth the money).

Miss Online doesnt censor profile pages for content. You can add links to your other modeling profiles as well as your myspace page, etc. I’d use Miss Online as the profile link to send prospective agents because it saves alot of time typing in different websites. They go to the Miss Online profile and can link to your others. Simple.

We’ve recently written about the beta version of the new Miss Online Modeling Site. (You can read the post entitled  “Best New Modeling Site of 2008).

Well, the new site has been rolled out and the excitement about this new site is huge. This is the first true social networking, or web 2.0, website dedicated to female models.

Members have complete control over their experience. They can import photos directly from flickr, totally customise their modeling profile page and for those who take pictures on the run–they can send it directly from their cell phones to their Miss Online Profile page.

Unlike one model place, which restricts content pertaining to external sites, Miss Online invites it. When models sign up and create a profile, there are questions which ask to type in their OMP #, MM #, Myspace Page, etc. The creators are hoping that this strategy will lead to their website becoming the central login page for all models. Why send agents links to 10 different websites when you can just give them your Miss Online URL and all of that info is in the page.

The site is rich with user features from slideshows, to custom profile badges, widgets and, get this, MODEL TALK! They’ve just included the BETA release of Model Talk on the site. This is a chat room directly on the website where users can interact. Models can give and ask for advise from other models, or agents can discuss job details in real time with the model. No more emailing for days.

Oh, and did I mention –THE GIRLS ARE SMOKING HOT !

PODIATRY student Stephanie Smith knows the perils of wearing high heels – but her love of fashion means she wears them anyway.

And the 19-year-old Hawthorn university student is to spend plenty of time in heels next month.

Smith has won the Herald Sun Pop Up model search, beating an impressive line-up of finalists.

She will play a starring role in the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival from March 2 to 9, striding the catwalks that will “pop up” throughout the city.

“At least I will know how to fix my feet if they get sore,” Smith joked.

It will be a busy period for Smith, who starts her second year at university a week earlier.

Smith entered the competition on the suggestion of her friends.

“I thought I might as well give it a go,” she said. “I have always loved fashion. I actually went to a few shows last year, so it will be great to be involved.”

Over the next two weeks, Smith will have some intensive walking lessons, but according to Maggie de Chalain from Vivien’s Model Management who was one of the judges, she will be an easy student to teach.

“She has already got a good walk – I think she is a bit of a natural,” de Chalain said.
