Restored clocks from Eastern Bloc countries, sold at London Timepiece

…the perfect clock.

I met Russell Callow of London Timepiece at a London design show last autumn. As I went into the show, the man on the desk said “you want a clock.” I was there for work, so how did he know that I did, indeed want a clock.

I followed the directions given and there they were – a whole wall of repurposed Czech timepieces. Simple in design but so much more pleasing than anything I’d managed to track down to date.

Guess which one came home with me.

I was a bit limited in choices b/c I needed/wanted a clock with numbers all the way around. So not only did it need to be functional, eye-catching, modern, it also needed to be educational (for my 5 year olds who are learning how to tell time).

This was the chosen one!

I could not be happier with it. And as lil sis commented, it makes very little noise! The craftsmanship is wonderful and the customer service is great! Now I’m wondering if I need one for the nursery? sigh…will that nursery ever be completed?

Privately commissioned to create a gift for an architect, Daniel Weil created a one-of-a-kind clock that is both simple and complex. Reducing objects to their component parts has long fascinated Weil. The Radio in a Bag* he created for his degree show at the Royal College of Art three decades ago is an icon of 20th century industrial design. This clock is the latest demonstration of his interest in investigating not just how objects look, but how they work.

Constructed in ash and nickel-plated brass and silver, the clock is built of five separate elements. The numbers, both hours and minutes, are inscribed on the face and interior of a 9 3/4-inches diameter ring.

The mechanism for setting the time connects with the central mechanism with visible rubber belts.

A single AA battery provides power to the clock through visible power strips that are recessed in the assembly’s base. (Note the different screws that support the battery stand, keyed to the positive and negative poles of the power source.)

And, befitting the object’s recipient, the housing for the central mechanism takes the form of, literally, a house.

Daniel’s sketches for the clock:

“Objects like clocks are both prosaic and profound,” says Weil. “Prosiac because of their ubiquity in everyday life, profound because of the mysterious nature of time itself. Time can be reduced to hours, minutes and seconds, just as a clock can be reduced to its component parts. This doesn’t explain time, but in a way simply exposes its mysterious essence.”

The Merry-Go-Round Clock

As described by hoa shi design:
The Merry Go Round clock connects time and memory by Merry-Go-Round. “Happiness” is the immediate feeling; however, “the memory of happiness” will extend to the infinity as time goes by. We therefore insert the element of time in this carousel.

A boy’s vigorous movement is the second hand. The minute hand symbolizes a mother, who company with her child continually.

The hour hand is like a father who steadily guards his family. The close relationships and interactions between them convert into the flow of time.

Custom made in London, these unusual wall clocks slowly rotate so that the ball sits on the ledge of the spiral. As the clock reaches 12:00, the ball drops into the hole, only to reappear and start again.

This simple ceramic clock looks great on either a wall or a table – and would be beautiful in most environments. Available in black & white, brown & grey, and white relief. 4.7” diameter.

This has to be the most brilliant analog clock concept I’ve seen yet. This clock, aptly called ‘The Meaning of Time’ by designer Bomi Kim, is an ultra simple torpedo shaped contraption with two holes, labeled ‘Hour’ and ‘Minute’. Stick the sharp end into your wall to hang the clock, then insert anything into the holes to represent the hour and minute clock!!!

I found this clock whilst browsing Yankodesign.com. Here are some examples of what you can insert into the holes to make clock hands. Unfortunately, no word on retail price or availability. Bomi Kim’s site is no help either as it’s currently under construction.

I personally think the pencil idea looks classy yet playful. Imagine using glow sticks in place of pencils when throwing one of your dinner parties. That sure would wow your guests and get them talking about it. However, I’m skeptical about how well the clock will hold ‘anything’ really because the holes are fixed size so you’ve got to find ‘hands’ that are exactly the same size as the holes to fit them in nicely into ‘The Meaning of Time’.

You could also get creative by customising the background of the clock to create a contemporary effect like this

The picture above is the Karlsson silver cube wall. FYI- Karlsson and Nextime mass produce contemporary analog clocks, many of which would look great in your modern home. You can find these clocks at Molecule in the Home Precinct at Pavilion KL (level 5). Clocks range from RM248 to RM655.

Digressing from Bomi Kim’s ‘The Meaning of Time’ analog clock, this is my pick of Karlsson clocks from Molecule- the Mixed Numbers Clock. This clock currently retails at RM655. If not for my practical side warning me of the effort required to clean the dust off the crevices of the clock, I would’ve purchased it in a jiffy.
