The Prodigy – Mescaline: сложная для The Prodigy получилась микстура из Music For The Jilted Generation и Invaders Must Die. Мелодии последнего и непомерный для Invaders Must Die грув второго номерного альбома. Мощный боевик, но, повторюсь, для танцпола, по моему, слишком сложен.
Headhunter – Prototype (Modeselektor’s Broken Handbrake Remix): этот трек же наоборот достаточно прост, но как захватывает дух. Чувствуется в нем этакий транс 90-х. Modeselektor сделал несвойственный для него дабстеп ремикс, очень глубокий и техничный.
Plan B – Rakin’ The Dead: прелесть, а не хип-хоп. Plan B в этом году явно в фаворитах. то у Chase & Status, то у Pendulum. Забавный, очень качественный трек. Немного ускорить, добавить ударных и на танцпол.
Tom Stephan – Turn That Shit Up (Diplo Remix): Diplo оседлал любимую лошадку, сделав ремикс на “самого себя” = Pon Di Floor + Jump Up. Но и при этом чувство грува ему не изменило. Сонм трендов последних 6 месяцев, вроде и точку уже ставить пора.
Crystal Fighters – I Love London (80kidz Remix): совсем не оценил поначалу я этот ремикс на один из моих любимых треков, только раза с третьего увидел в нем потенциал, мелодику Thin White Duke и фирменный звук Foamo.
Delphic – Doubt (Riton Vox Remix): ремиксы Riton в этом сезоне принято любить, хоть и ничем не примечателен этот, а радует слух.
Annie – Antonio (Designer Drugs Remix): Designer Drugs ремикс за ремиксом создают мощные басовые линии вкупе с отличными мелодиями.

Aaaaah my favorite German electronic artists. WHy oh WHYYY aren’t they more well known. It makes me angry. Yet at the same time I’m happy that I have them all to myself…well and a few others. They’ve already released two albums, Happy Birthday and Hello Mom which are ridiculously amazing and seriously unrecognized. They are amazing live. I can’t wait to hear a new album, which is hopefully in the works?

06 Moderat – A New Error

Modeselektor + Apparat. In case you didn’t know. Two huge German powerhouse electronic artists come together and made easily one of the best albums this year, self-titled Moderat. Electronic music, though rising, is continually under-represented! Errrrrbody is all up Indie’s ass with the St. Vincent, Dirty Projectors, and Animal Collective. Sure these albums are great (they really are). But electronic music in the decades and end of year lists are seriously on the back burner. Shit. Moderat is easily in the tops in the decade and end of year for me.

Estoy escribiendo este post sentado en el escritorio del salón de clases mientras mis estudiantes realizan su examen final. Este semestre se fue muy rápido y a decir verdad no se exactamente qué pasó.

Dicen que el tiempo se pasa rápido cuando la estas pasando bien. No se, pero no creo haberla pasado bien en este semestre. Tampoco es que me haya ido mal pero simple y sencillamente, repito no me la pasé mal pero tampoco supe qué pasó.

Espero y que mis estudiantes no lean este post, y si lo hacen, pues me disculpo publicamente por cómo la hayan pasado en mi curso.

En estos días he ocupado mi tiempo en el proyecto de Bálsamo, y el Francofón. Ambos podcasts me absorben al menos un par de horas cada uno, sin embargo, los disfruto a cada uno de los dos y mucho. Alguien me dijo que siempre andaba metido en lo de comunicación y a me puse a pensar si no era ya el momento de darle un giro a mi carrera. No se que responder en este momento, pero son varias las circunstancias que me hacen pensar y ¿por qué no? Ya el tiempo dirá.

Aquí les dejo una foto al azar, de esas que se van quedando rezagadas en el disco duro y que es bueno ponerlas en contexto ahora que me acuerdo del motivo. Por ejemplo, esta de una lata de helado. El helado es para mi uno de los postres mas deliciosos que existen. Esperen, hay postres malos? En fin, esta marca en particular es de las más ricas que uno puede encontrar en el súper. (Ojalá y me patrocinaran).

Esta foto es para platicarles que curiosamente, en los últimos meses de mi vida me ha ocurrido de forma frecuente que cuando volteo a ver la hora en un reloj digital casi siempre marca las 11:11 o la 1:11, o las 5:55. Qué significará eso? Aparentemente no soy el único a quien le pasa. Por ejemplo Rodrigo y Gabriela decidieron llamar a su último disco 11:11. Será que sí soy Jesús y les estoy diciendo la hora en que el mundo se va a acabar?

En estos días recién instalé en mi Compu dos sistemas operativos y Snow Leopard y Karmic Koala. Para mis amigos no nerdos les comento que el primeros es para Mac y el segundo es software libre del mundo de Linux. Ambos me han gustado mucho, no sabría cual recomendarles, lo que si se es que he invertido mucho tiempo en aprender de ellos. Sobre todo de Linux. Ahora creo que ha llegado el momento de decidirme por uno solo de ellos y es en verdad una pregunta difícil. Pero ¿por qué quedarse con uno de ellos solamente? Bueno, la verdad es que consumen mucho tiempo en dejarlos al gusto de uno y termino por no hacer algo que sea productivo.

Se que he descuidado este blog, por ejemplo. Pero aquí estoy de regreso, preparando un lindo cierre de año. De hecho, ya debería estar pensando en la lista de lo mejor del 2009. Por lo pronto, les dejo un videíto de lo que para mi hasta hoy ha sido el evento del año: Los Modeselektor. El video es de buena calidad, pero el audio no. Mi punto es que quiero que vean un gramo del evento de esa noche.

Every year it’s part of my job at PlayNetwork to come up with a list of top albums and overall assessment of music trends for the year. Below is my brief review of what I felt was a pretty landmark year for electronic music in the US and in general. Barring any incredible releases over the next month, these are my picks for the year. Keep in mind this list is strictly made up of albums; not EPs, 12’s or remixes (i.e 95% of the electronic music I purchased this year).

2009 in Review : Binary Pop, Warp’s Legacy, Dub Mutations and the Return of Sexy Dance Music

2009 has been an incredibly innovative year in relation to music production. Artists like Animal Collective, Fever Ray, Royksopp and Moderat have proven once and for all that digital beats and electronic sound design can appeal to a pop audience that otherwise wouldn’t find themselves listening to “electronic music”.

This year also marks the 20 year anniversary of the greatest electronic music label (arguably greatest label) of all time, Warp Records, which has had an exceptional year across the board with strong indie releases from Grizzly Bear and Maximo Park as well as strong releases from their more obscure electronic artists like Tim Exile and Clark. Warp’s 20th anniversary box set is not only one of the best reviewed collections of they year, it’s also a brilliant testament to the label’s vast catalog of ground breaking artists (i.e. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Jamie Lidell, Nightmares on Wax, Prefuse 73, Autechre, Broadcast, Plaid, Battles, Squarepusher, etc).

In addition, 2009 witnessed the rise of Dubstep as a respected genre in the US through acclaimed UK labels like Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Joker, Zomby, Flying Lotus) and Tectonic (2562, Martyn, DJ Pinch, Benga) both of whom continue to blur the boundaries between Grime, Dub, West Coast Hip Hop and Detroit Techno. With the avid support of tastemakers like BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs and Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev (Alpha Pup Records) UK Dubstep and West Coast Glitch Hop / Hip Hop have both become quintessential styles on the electronic music frontline in the US. From Burning Man to this year’s Movement festival in Detroit, Dubstep and Glitch Hop have fully emerged in 2009 as a staple sound in North America.

Another emerging trend has been the Deep House and Tech House revival, which has been experiencing a resurgence the past few years as club-goers have tired of the heady, sterility of Minimal Techno and the frenetic, over the top sound of Electro House. Artists like Gui Boratto, Voodeux, Pezzner, Milton Jackson, Stimming, Mode D, Catz n Dogz, DJ T and Dixon have all helped in keeping underground dance music both sexy and musical.

Overall 2009 has been a phenomenal year for technologically driven music, proving that creativity is truly catching up with the tools used for musical expression in the digital age.

Modeselektor are geniuses. Creating thought-provoking, emotional, banging and some downright weird shit. Here we have an emotional yet banging track and a thought-provoking yet downright weird video! Directed by artist Pfadfinderei the video, this is how he describes the story “Versed on the international art trade floor it was easy for them to win over two sought-after art dealers; to seal the deal and to go on a shopping spree. “Art & Cash” is the shocking “behind the scenes” documentary of that German art campaign. In the process a scandal was revealed that is shaking experts to this day. For years and under the watchful eyes of millions did the “Fantastic Nobodies” – exceptionally gifted art counterfeiters and weirdos from Brooklyn – manage to sell themselves as renowned works of art, thus creating inexplicable damage…”. The track itself has a driving bassline, pounding drums at a slow pace of about 100-110 bpm and an encapsulating melody with the synths. Beautiful.

MODESELEKTOR – CASH

While everyone is celebrating the fall of the Berlin wall today i wanted to talk about another major event which happened in Berlin…

I name: the invention of the döner kebab, this Turkish meal known by many (especially after long nights out), but often under different names. Indeed the Turkish name is döner kebab and means rotating grilled meat, but in France they call it a “grec” (French readers can read here why) and in Belgium I noticed some places where they call it döner but it’s quite rare, the dürüm usually replaces it.

Although the origins of this dish come from the Ottoman empire in the XVII th century, it is said that it was “recreated” in Kreuzberg (district of Ost-Berlin) in 1971. And it was in a restaurant called Hasir. Some of you might recognize that name thanks to Modeselektor’s homage on their album Hello Mom.

Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which effectively was the Fall of Communism in Germany. The wall was built in 1961 and wasn’t pulled down until the 9th of November 1989. With me having a German grandmother i’ve always had a keen interest in all things German from a young age and have been told many stories about the Berlin wall by my Gran and my mum.

Seeing as this isn’t a history lesson though i’m not going to waffle on about the Berlin Wall, i’ll get to the point, this weeks list is a collection of German bands/artists, mainly hailing from Berlin but some from other areas. And also included in the list is one song about the Wall itself.

I was pretty jacked up for last nights Basement Jaxx DJ set, but I left extremely unsatisfied by their performance. I’d still highly recommend their new Scars album though, as their production is still “balling out of control.” I guess the one thing I did get from their unconvincing DJ Set was this very tasty remix of “Raindrops” by Funkagenda & Paul Thomas. I’d also like to point out that Modeselektor came correct last night.

So I Just got back from a mind blowing weekend in LA, where I attended The Hard Haunted Mansion for the second year in a row. I had an incredible time with some good friends. It’s a shame Halloween is over, definitely one of my favorite holidays. Here is a list of my top 5 favorite acts from Hard, oh… and a couple tracks from these artists that you might enjoy as well.

At the top of the list for me was the Berlin Based Duo Modeselektor, their set was absolute murder, and the Alien Surgery that was being performed onstage during their performance was disgustingly brilliant. My only regret was not being close enough to the stage to have the Spaghetti/ Alien guts hurled onto me

Always Deawale! The brothers did it again with a show that had some of the best visuals I have seen in a long time + who else have you heard that can mix Slayer into Dolly Parton so seamlessly

After an insane night of raving at Boys Noize on Tuesday, I wanted to keep the German beats train rolling by catching Modeselektor last night at Mod Club. Despite my hype and enthusiasm for the show, I passed out 20 minutes before I was supposed to leave. Turns out casual ravey Tuesdays will lead to casual pass out Wednesdays. I’m so lame!
