Each month author Lucy Harmer dedicates her journal entries to the theme of “transformative and inspirational living” – finding the fun, magic and laughter in everyday occurrences! She explores ideas, thoughts and quotes from her two books, Discovering Your Spirit Animal and Shamanic Astrology.

Shamanic Astrology
Exploring the Personality of your Spirit Animal Sign

© Copyright 2009 Lucy Harmer

Last month in my journal (October 2009), I gave an overview of what Shamanic Astrology is. This month, I am going to explore the twelve spirit animal signs of the medicine wheel a little deeper, so that you can begin to discover the special qualities each sign possesses.

There are twelve astrological “signs” on the medicine wheel, which are represented by twelve different spirit animals. Shamanic Astrology teaches us that inner power derives from knowing the properties, characteristics, and qualities of each spirit animal (known as their “medicine”), and applying this in our own lives.

To get you started, here are some of the main strengths and weaknesses of each of the twelve spirit animals. It is really interesting to note that weaknesses are often just a mirror of our strengths and qualities. What we see as “weaknesses” can often be transformed into “strengths.” Take Falcon people, for example, whose “weaknesses” can be their tendency to be impulsive and headstrong. Transformed, these qualities become Falcon people’s strengths – their spontaneity and pioneering nature.

(If you are not sure which spirit animal sign you are, you can find out by looking your birthday up in the second table below – “Which animal sign are you?”)

Strengths and Weaknesses of the twelve spirit animal signs:

I always find it fascinating to look up the qualities of my friends, family and work colleagues. It is amazing how much their spirit animal sign can tell you about why they may behave in certain ways!

You can find out more about the personality of your own spirit animal and how you relate to the other signs, in my book Shamanic Astrology: Understanding Your Spirit Animal Sign. You can also discover the different spirit animal clans that you, your friends and family belong to, and your own special plant, stone, element, color and life path.

Which animal sign are you?
To find your spirit animal sign, just locate your birthday from the dates below, according to your place of birth. If you were born north of the equator (eg; USA, Canada, Europe), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Northern Hemisphere.” If you were born south of the equator (eg; Australia, New Zealand, South Africa), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Southern Hemisphere.”

This month, I wish you lots of fun and magic in exploring the strengths and qualities of your own spirit animal sign, and discovering those of your friends, family and work colleagues too!

Love and blessings,

Dress design for Shabby Apple dresses Shabby Apple is this AMAZING dress shop online that I have bee

Dress design for Shabby Apple dresses

Shabby Apple is this AMAZING dress shop online that I have been a customer at for years. Vicki, my stepsister, wore a Shabby Apple as her maid of honor dress for my wedding. I have three Shabby Apple dresses myself; a red one, a black one, and a purple one. They are all hemline appropriate, figure flattering, and fashion forward. I cannot speak enough about it. Recently I got an email from them, because I am on their mailing list, announcing a design contest. Coincidentally, I was designing wedding dresses for my Art class, wherein each dress was one of the four seasons, so I was already in the mood to make someone feel beautiful and make a statement through fashion.

Here is my dress:

I knew I wanted to design a gray dress as soon as I heard about the contest. Gray is the new brown. Especially this Spring we are going to see weddings and events with the base color as gray. Accessorizing gray is beautiful, chic, and modern. A dull yellow broach, or a pink flower pinned in the hair create this lovely fresh look. I call it “Overcast Spring Rain” because when the sun is covered by the rainy clouds, the new bloom of yellow daffodils and red tulips are the palet of the season.

The dress is tight and form-fitting from under the bust and down the body, also at the top of the arms to the forearm. It is loose around the bodice and the forearms. Under the bustline it is gathered with a cord-like effect within the material.

Now as for the design, I was inspired by a few designers:

Firstly I was inspired by this Jacques Olivar photograph from his series showing off the ‘60 fashion made popular by shows such as Mad Men:

I can’t get enough of the sleeves. The idea of a long-sleeved dress with the poof there at the wrist is just a beautiful idea. However, that color, material, and neckline were something I stayed clear from.

My neck line is more like the one from this Elisabeth Toll photograph, wherein it hangs down to create this pretty effect, however the one in my design is higher, more up on the collar-bone:

Now as far as material goes I love the flattering cottony, practical but fashionable material from the Shabby Apple dress my stepsister wore to my wedding:

I think that my dress would be a wonderful addition to anyone’s Spring wardrobe and really be something they can wear with confidence and style to a party, wedding, or church on Sundays. Thank you Shabby Apple for giving me this opportunity to design.

Ghanian Cleric tasks female Christians on modest dressing

Pastor Anthony Armah has called female Christians to dress modestly in order to be good ambassadors for Christ.

Armah who made the call an interview in Accra noted that most female Christians no longer dress modestly as they dress to expose some parts of their bodies.

Armah, a Pastor in the Redeemed Church of God, Liberation Centre, and West Coast 1 Headquarters in Accra said that a Christian sister ought to dress to please God rather than herself or men.

“When you see a Christian dressing immodestly, it makes non- believer to doubt her faith and make mockery of her faith simply because the way she dresses,’’ he said.

The cleric expressed dissatisfaction over some sisters who come to church without covering major parts of their saying such habit disrespects God.

“If you go and a visit a King because you have respect for him, you will not wear any type of dress that will expose your body. You will not want to expose yourself to that King.

“The same thing, Jesus Christ is the King of King and Lord of Lords, you need to cover yourself properly before you come to his presence’’ he noted.

According to him, the way a sister dresses can make other Christians who are not strong to stumble adding that is far from what God demands from them as His special vessels.

“As Christians, you must do God will, not yours so that He can use you for a greater task according to what is written in the book of 2nd Timothy chapter two verses 20 to 21.

“ So, you should make yourself available for a greater task in God’s house by dressing to glorify him and not dressing to please men’’ the cleric added.

As an avid online shopper and self-proclaimed fashionista, I have noticed a trend lately that is very disappointing. One of the biggest challenges that I face on a daily basis is looking professional, while trendy. Most of the items that are available for young professional women to wear are appropriate for a nightclub, not an office. This is an even larger hardship at my job because I am a teacher at an all girl’s independent/private school. A large part of my job is just simply being a good role model to young women that I interact with in and out of the classroom.

On the other hand, I love fashion, trends, and to express my personality through clothes. Luckily, I came across a clothing website that gave me a quick fix to all my fashion woes and didn’t break my budget in the process. Tabeez.com is an online clothing store that has a great selection of trend-setting, but modest apparel. I ordered the vibrant teal slinky dress with red flats. Flats are a must have for me since I am teaching on my feet for 8 hours a day!

I live in Australia so I was concerned about International shipping, but they had me covered there too. They are partnered with a parcel forwarding company called BongoUS. It was so simple to set up delivery of my new outfit. I added my items to the Tabeez.com cart, signed up for my US address through Bongo, and completed the transaction in a matter of minutes.

I received everything only 4 days later, just in time for me to wear my new outfit on Friday. The items and the shipping were so reasonable that I even threw in a gold buckle belt at the last minute and it was included in the same box. Tabeez.com was a great find and I am going to recommend it to all my female co-workers and see if we don’t just start a new trend or two!

In spite of rainy weather, the band played a diverse set that included songs from all three of their studio albums. The festival continued today with performances from, among others, Franz Ferdinand, Metric and Modest Mouse.
If hyperactive math-punk is your thing — and really, how could it not be? — then Toronto’s DD/MM/YYYY have awesome news for you. These heavy-hitting Canadians just signed to Brooklyn’s Impose Records, with plans to rerelease their third LP, Black Square, on cassette and digitally September 15. Even better, they’re expanding their U.S. tour to celebrate, and will play Rochester’s Bug Jar on September 24. Tickets are $10 for ages 18-20 and $8 if you’re over 21; These Arms Are Snakes headline. [Previous 20 Watts Coverage: Real Estate Play with DD/MM/YYYY]

Stereogum reports that Entertainment Weekly, in its Sept. 11 issue, ranks both the fifty best and five worst songs recorded by The Beatles. On 09/09/09, in honor John Lennon’s favorite number, remasters of the entire song catalogue — as well as The Beatles: Rock Band — drop. EW’s commemorative ranking lists “All You Need Is Love” as both the worst Beatles song ever made and the fiftieth best. This is puzzling, considering the band recorded a lot more than fifty songs in their prolific career.
SPIN reports that Soulsavers opened up their U.S. tour in Portland, Oregon last night, in support of their new album, Broken. Soulsavers, fronted by The Screaming Trees and Gutter Twins lead singer Mark Lanegan, will be playing 15 shows through the month of September. Unfortunately for us, the closest they’ll be coming to Syracuse is NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on the 22nd, and Toronto’s Mod Club on the 25th. Maybe it’s worth the trip though, for you diehards out there. If you were in Seattle, you might have caught them at Bumbershoot, too (see above). [Previous 20 Watts Coverage: Daniel Johnston to Play at Mod Club and Elsewhere]

The Fray struggled to garner interest and audiences at the State Fair this weekend. Competing against the likes of mainstream acts like Kid Rock, Big & Rich, Shinedown, and the legendary Mötley Crüe, they failed to play off their momentary “Grey’s Anatomy” fame. But the big break came for Syracuse-based band Soul Risin’, who was asked to replace openers Our Lady Peace at the 11th hour when a family emergency grounded the Toronto band.

If single women travelers in Egypt abide by certain rules which include dressing modestly, ignoring hisses from men, and jumping in a cab when the situation calls for it, they can enjoy safe travels. According to female American graduate student in Cairo, Anna Woolfolk, individuals’ harassment of women is more a function of economics than cultural differences. Also, Woolfolk says that women should understand that the media’s portrayal of women as sexually liberal might shape Egyptians’ views on Western women.

The detailed report totally described my weaknesses. But I have strengths too, ya know…
I saw these really huge bars on the detailed page: Cautiousness (77), Modesty (75), Orderliness (74), and Depression (74). Whoa, depression? I thought I was over that! Orderliness, too. I’m not necessarily a neat freak. Cautious… When I think about it, I am! Modest, I have been told. The report says I seem to be a very closed, very vulnerable person. I remember last year, being unhappy I felt exactly this way. I feel different now… But yet, I feel the same? What is the matter with me?

-Izzy

P.S People, TAKE THIS REPORT!!! It might show you something you didn’t know, or make you come face to face with something you had been denying all of this time! It clears your mind a bit!
