Despite the recent setbacks they have encountered, Indian associations, organisations and missions are going ahead with intensified campaigns to prevent suicides among their compatriots in the UAE.

The spate of suicide cases in the recent months, including that of an anti-suicide crusader, had jolted the awareness campaigns being conducted by various Indian groups. In spite of all that, more and more anti-suicide initiatives are being taken up by the community.

And the focus now is on awareness about financial discipline that would help people avoid getting trapped in debts or to tide over financial troubles, two reasons that have been mainly attributed to the recent suicide cases of many Indians.

The Mission Zero Suicide (MZS) campaign is also focusing on the same while discouraging the Indian expats from taking the extreme step that many of their fellow compatriots have resorted to in this country where they flew in with dreams to build their lives better.

What makes the campaign different is that it is also collecting pledges from individuals to ensure that those who listen to the valuable messages of the campaign are committed to support the cause. The campaign has been launched in public interest by UAE Exchange as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme.

Promoth Manghat, Vice-President for Global Operations, UAE Exchange, said that a dedicated team from the firm is spearheading the campaign.

They are trying to reach out to the maximum number of Indian expatriates, especially those hailing from Kerala since a high number of those who ended their lives belong to the south Indian state. For this, Manghat said the team is conducting the awareness sessions in labour accommodations, Indian associations and socio-cultural and welfare groups.

Retail Marketing Manager of UAE Exchange Vinod Nambiar said signatures of more than 50,000 people including some celebrities have been collected during the first four weeks of the campaign.

The campaign has already garnered the support of celebrities like Malayalam actors Mohanlal and Dileep, carnatic musician and music director Dakshinamoorthy, member of Indian parliament P. Rajeev etc during their UAE visits. Though the campaign is mainly targeting the Indian community, it has received the support of the Pakistan and Sri Lankan consulates as well.

Video Message

The 70-day campaign that was launched on June 15 is also using a video to highlight the social issue and the reasons behind it.

After the graphical images of various causes of suicide, the video shows the message from the Indian ambassador to the UAE M. K. Lokesh who talks about how the Indian missions, through the Indian Workers’ Resource Centre (IWRC), have been trying to spread awareness against suicides.

There was a special screening of the video for the heads of all Indian associations under the Indian Community Welfare Committee (ICWC), an umbrella organisation of Indian socio-cultural and welfare bodies registered with the Indian Consulate in Dubai.

“The concept (of MZS) is very good and we would like to extend our full support to this campaign,” said K. Kumar, the convener of ICWC.

According to the organisers, a new version of the video with subtitles in Hindi and Malayalam are being readied to address a larger section of the community. The services of financial or psychological experts are offered in the campaign which is also propagating the toll free helpline number of the IWRC 800-INDIA or 800-46342. Through the 24×7 multi-lingual helpline, Indian expatriates from across the UAE can air their grievances and seek financial, legal and psychological advice.

Gatherings of Awakening

Another anti-suicide campaign launched in the UAE this month aims to hold as many as 150 gatherings to spread the message of secure living.

The Risala Study Circle (RSC) is conducting the campaign as part of a GCC-wide drive that aims to reach out to at least half a million Indian expatriates in six GCC countries. According to the organisers, the campaign is aimed at spreading the messages of financial stability, positive social relationships and value-based and addiction-free lifestyle to the Indian community members from all walks of life.

The gatherings will be held during three month-long awareness sessions conducted at national, zonal, and unit levels of the RSC till September 30. The programme schedule comprises of academic seminars, study camps, workshops, and teens meet etc.

The term of the campaign will be known as “The Period of Awakening” during which RSC will form a dedicated social service wing called Sneha Sangam (Team of Love).

According to the organisers, the major causes of this unfortunate series of events are usually financial insecurity, addiction, and lack of social living.

Advice not enough

However, people like A.K.  Sethunath, the president of Kerala Samajam in Ras Al Khaimah, are apprehensive of how effective such messages and pieces of advice through awareness drives could be in preventing the suicidal thoughts of a desperate individual who is neck-deep in debt.

“Many cases that we have seen are of people who were struggling to come out of debt traps,” said Sethunath, who was instrumental in creating a group of nearly 15 socio-cultural organisations in Ras Al Khaimah to conduct awareness programmes against suicide earlier this year.

The union of the social groups followed the opening of a hotline number for community members in debt and distress after a three-member family died in a suicide pact in Ras Al Khaimah.

“After the details of the hotline were published in Khaleej Times, we received several cases. In most cases, they were victims of their own actions. Though we worked together to solve the issues of many, we have realised that it is not something that we can solve by offering advice. For people in financial difficulties, somebody has to offer some practical solutions to restructure and repay their debts. No advice or awareness can be of help at that time,” said Sethunath.

“Awareness may help in the cases of people who are not yet in such troubles. But, there must be some mechanism to assist those who are already in financial crisis and legal cases related to it,” he added.

Let me make it Loud and clear….I walk, talk, sleep, breath and snore cinema.(Snoring is slightly exaggeratedJ).The only thing I am incapable is act, or be involved in any creative aspect. But that does not stop me from pontificating, evangelizing or soap boxing about movies (Seriously feel sorry for those who don`t share similar tastes and have to put up with my raving and ranting  :) .

Often amuses when people ask “You don`t have any other Job, Lakshmi, Is there anything you haven`t seen yet?

Oh Yes “haven`t watched Desh Drohi, and Jaani Dushmani..: Was suffering from Trichotillomania those two days when the movie got released and missed the FDFS  (First Day First Show )..

Have been very lucky ( Disclaimer:”undue importance”) to be born to a family who are all huge movie buffs. Starting from Grandmother who still narrates to me  her good old “Kramer Vs Kramer”  Calcutta days ,to  Mother and Father  who would travel all the way from Mannar(where initially they were working before settling in  Thrissur) to Ernakulam, to watch back to back  movies in Saritha ,Savitha and Sangeetha ,very often, it has been movies all the way.

Now, I am blessed with a super duper husband in toe who completes me totally.

As I am getting older (and Wiser Too, Certain things need to taken for Granted folks ) , becoming very nostalgic about anything remotely “Malayalamish” and irks me no end if an outsider (READ as Non-Malaya lees) refers “Molly wood” as an “Industry that has popularized soft porn movies” . Grrr…. Cheek of those Blighters.  Need to put an end to their subversive thought process with all our might.

Since I started blogging, was in a bit of quandary regarding “What Next” would be Ideal. I was clearly not in the mood to give “pearls of wisdom” or “Things to ponder” so to speak. Decided to pen down something on my favourite pass time, Cinema! Being a hard core Malayalam cinema loyalist, I could not think about anyone but Padmarajan worthy of my time(ahem! Ahem!).As I always brag to my husband (for whom Kamal Hassan and Bharti Raja comes to mind first when we talk about cinema )“The marker is “Padmarajan”. There is Before Padmarajan and After Padmarajan and when he died, everybody moved up one.”

(Slightly tweaked the famous quotes by Martin Scorsese and Jack Nicholson when they were asked about Marlon Brando)

.. The man with unkempt hair and rugged beard, the story writer who went to become one of Malayalam`s most celebrated movie maker.

It s very interesting that the first movie I saw in TV was Kanamarayathu (Amma tells, that’s the first .So No context on that ) which is written by P.Padmarajan.

So in a way feels connected.

The triumvirates Aravindan, Bharathan and Padmarajan, (completing the wholesome three) thus became very popular for giving new meanings to independent film making.

Its Padmarajan all the way that I felt had a slight edge over the others with respect to the flowing movie narration, coat of believability and uniqueness in the way he took the audience through the experience. Without skipping a beat, he is one of the very few directors who distanced from using heavy stampede of “Nair-ish” characters (One very common trait you get to see with many celebrated and noted filmmakers and writers including the inimitable M.T.Vasudevan Nair).

Boy that was such a welcome repartee .Sometimes you really wish to see things from a different point of view, without the use of overrated “Valluvanadan” slang ,”Varikkaseri Mana” and typical Nair traits that one has seen and grown used to.(I am sure many will disagree on that. But hey, is this not supposed to be my personal Space ).

He was a storyteller par excellence. Though apparently, his stories and films team with ‘ordinary’ men and women, and very ‘local’ cityscapes and villages, these people and places are charged with a raw and explosive kind of passion and desire; they lie dormant within them and is aroused at the slightest instance: it can be the arrival of a man or woman, an unexpected turn of events or an accident. Devoid of the baggage of Ideologies or legacies, they vociferously quarreled with everything, though they were not sure about their dreams.

Starting from a Peruvazhi Ambalam, to Njan Gandharvan he breathed life to the characters.

A rustic Raman avenged Prabhakaran Pillai for killing his parents in Peruvazhi Ambalam, first movie directed by him.

What’s the big deal -It is a Revenge story, with a rape scene (a must have plot, then) and one Mr. I V Sasi, has given us many such capers with movie titles starting with the letter “A” .

But why a Peruvazhi Ambalam stands apart? That’s the charm of the filmmaker. A person, who can transport the viewer to the centre of the drama and make you a participant in the action-“when he incisively examined how violence and totalitarianism works in the society”.

Then debutant Ashokan sank his teeth into a role that did full justice to his immense talent (unfortunately those outings became very rare) and Aziz(as Prabhakaran Pillai) was  pitch –perfect as the dement or.

Do you think a commercial or art house director would have made movies, banking heavily on not so obvious choices, to play the male protagonists, like for instance a Thadiyan Babu ?

Still wonder, Padmarajan`s mindset when he gave Rashid (the only other memorable movie,I can think of without the help of Wikipedia being his reprisal as a killer in Pattanapravesham) a role of a lifetime  as a wrestler in “Oridathhoru phayalman .The  movie reel intrudes in to  a village that created ripples after the arrival of a “Gigantic figure”. How Padmarajan made a disarmingly simple movie, remarkably powerful is anybody`s guess. It had the heart in the right place and its heart backed by a ticking mind when he exposed the inherent struggle of Rasheed (the wrestler) to cope up with impotency and how the village throws him out, and regains its calm, but in the process, several hearts have been wounded and minds set aflame.

Be it about a small time crook played by Nedumudi Venu in Kallan Pavithran(a delicious movie with quirky humor and surprising sensitivity),

or  one of the most unconventional cop story as is the case of Kariyilakattu poley ,the man assembled  a rock-solid cast  who effortlessly inhabited their roles  with all the right ticks and the quirks  along with a equally noteworthy supporting cast.

Most good films will engage you with their characters and their drama, but how many can claim to challenge you at the same time? Thoovanathumbikal is a film that keeps you on your toes; it’s a film that never spoon-feeds you, instead expects you to read between the lines, to fill in the gaps for yourself, and to decode the subtext. It’s true, that Thoovanathumbikal is the kind of film that expects as much of its audience as its audience expects of the film.

Using Rain as metaphor, the movie oozed romance from the word go..I will heavily discount the forced Trichur dialect mouthed not so perfectly by the complete actor, for Mohanlal gave a reason to believe “Fall in love again”, without playing a Casanova: P (Pun Intended )..

Everything felt so right about the movie..Trichur,the locales which were very near to the Poothole house we stayed, the Nair stinginess, Mannarthody home, the beautiful dialogues, the immortal characters,-Jayakrishnan, Clara, Thangalu mashu, the nauseating sensuous vibe between Sumalatha and Mohanlal..God, there are too many to list.

No wonder since close to a year personalized ringtone, for Krishna Mohan (i.e. husband for the uninitiated) and for folks is the Thoovanathumbikal Theme Music…

As a writer had rightfully mentioned “Transgressive love” was a recurring theme in Padmarajan movies, Be it his ‘Arappattakettiya Gramathil’ where a group of youngster`s escape to a brothel to quench their fantasies turn topsy-turvy, or a Deshadana Kili Karayarilla (Many Bloggers do mention the same, as a theme that border on mild levels of lesbianism. I beg to differ and can see the relationship only as a bonding of two  best friends , living life on the edge), where the protagonists  pledged the lives against the society  they could not fit in, or a Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal  when Sophia (Shaari) had to succumb to Paul Pilokaran`s (Thilakan) indecent advances, or Parannu,Parannu,Parannu where  Mini (Rohini ) had to run from the past, hiding her identity , Padmarajan Cracked the  whip defying  “Happily ever After” endings .They are unsettling movies all right , one that throws up  difficult questions  and demand urgent responses, but nonetheless invokes  the escapist in us .

Especially with Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal where Mohanlal, Shaari and Thilakan made it an unmissable experience for the sheer chemistry they shared and for the entirely believable flesh-and-blood characters they are able to create out of the “Syrian-Christians “they portrayed.

Who can forget that” lump in the throat moment “when Solomon Mathai (Mohanlal) professes his love for Sophia Pailokkaran (Shaari). (Nth person to highlight the “Songs of Solomon reference”).

My God..What a scene Man!!!

However this virtual and literal (through his books) explosions of sensuality mellowed towards the late 80s (exception to that rule being Season) with Aparan, Moonnam Pakkam (another favourite), Ennale catapulting actor Jayaram into a genre outside his forte, comedy.

The relationship between Pachu (Jayaram) and Thampi (Thilakan) just was too intense, be it scads of deftly one liner and situations, melancholy that clings, the climax scene that ticked the lachrymose tear duct again and again ….

it is probably the only movie which I would have watched more than 100 times…Yeah you heard it right, “100 ” and lil back ” the only movie ” . Its funny and something interesting to notice , still, even today, if even someone’s shows me a glimpse of that movie on TV, I am willing to sit and watch provided I have the time. Just two days ago I had seen this movie again because I felt its been quite long since I saw it again. And yeah, that served as my recipe for writing. And it goes without any guessing, this movie would be on every Keralite‘s favourite list, I am talking about the  usual movie goers. It’s a movie that did a box office as well as catered to all the masses and which won accolades at National Level.

A thriller story , with a traditional setup having all the illusions and hallucinations bounded within an small town premises in the Kerala state , that involves few characters who line up to display some of the bestest performances anyone can portray till date. That is my opinion, from so far what I have seen.

The movie stars , Padmashri Shobana, Bharat Mohanlal & Bharat Suresh Gopi primarly and intelligent actor Nedumudy Venu, powerful combination of K.P.C Lalitha & Innocent and many others. The reason why I mentioned Shobana first was because its totally her movie, which fetched her first National Award for best-actress in the year 1993 and till date its been considered as one of her powerhouse performance and she deserved it anyway, than anyone else in that year. Being supported by Mohanlal & Suresh Gopi who are strong characters who take the story forward along with many others have really made the movie that was directed in 45days , a big success than it was all expected.

Needless to narrate the story, which revolves around a beautiful innocent married lady Ganga, who visits her husband Nakulan’s native in Kerala, along with him as part of his professional project set in town.  And when she learns an ancient story about a spirit of a courtesan from Chennai who was slaughtered along with her lover in the same building that belonged to Nakulan’s ancestral property and where they decide to reside during their stay ,story takes a turn when shocking and horrifying incidents that create a turmoil in the entire family and when its known to the family that the Nakulan’s once-upon-a-time-destined-family-girl has been touched upon by the spirit, lands the great psychologist Dr. Sunny, completely humorous character, a close friend of Nakulan’s , who is the discoverer of the twist in the tale, where he takes the story forward and towards the climax the entire plot changes and focuses on Ganga who is indeed the victim of the spirit’s touch and suffers from multiple-personality disorder and Dr. Sunny is at rescue for the friend and friend’s wife. And end of the story , all is well ends well with a happy note from the entire family as Ganga, Nakulan and Dr. Sunny leave their town for good carrying good memories.

Music that supports and plays an integral part of the movie, that are composed by the Late M.G Radhakrishnan & lyricist BichuThirumala & Madhu Muttam who have presented some of the best songs for this movie have also earned millions of likes as they favor the movie and enhance the story very nicely and not to forget to mention Late Johnson sir’s contribution for background score is absolutely excellent.

Story as said above is weighed high by some embellishing performances be it a serious plot or humor filled , all the actors have done extremely well without a doubt and the movie directed by the famous Fazil had all reasons for it to be liked by the audience which made the movie goers catch the movie at the theatre calling it Shobhana‘s movie as Fazil says its completely her movie.

Its only really exciting and thrilling to notice Shobhana ‘s facial expressions that change intermittently and instantaneously which go unnoticed when you don’t think she is the victim as the focus is on another character and when you realize that certain doings from her side did strike a chord somewhere just goes to show how much of an expert talent she is as an actor. And talking about the supporting actors K.PC Lalitha, Innocent, Nedumudy Venu they have all contributed so well to the characters , which make you feel they are so real and their acting comes onto us just as they are living their characters with their slightly humor dozed antics that make us laugh.

Movies like these and acting like these are rare to see and do not miss such entertainment. Its always a bliss to catch on some old movies once in a while to make us realize that OLD is GOLD as some say…and yes I also do say that….once-in-a-while

Personal Note : Though the movie was later remade into many languages Hindi,Tamil & Telugu, but none of them have been able to beat the original version, my personal favorite which again goes to prove that OLD IS GOLD . 

രഞ്ജിത്ത്-മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍ കൂട്ടുകെട്ടിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ സിനിമയാണ് സ്പിരിറ്റ്‌.ഒരു മദ്യപാനിയുടെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന മാറ്റങ്ങളും,മദ്യം എന്നാ സാമൂഹിക വിപത്തിനെതിരെയുള്ള സന്ദേശവുമാണ് ഈ സിനിമ. ലാലേട്ടന്റെ അതുല്യമായ അഭിനയം തന്നെയാണ് ഈ സിനിമയുടെ ഈറ്റവും വലിയ പ്ലസ്‌ പോയന്റ്.ആരും പറയാന്‍ മടിക്കുന്ന ,എന്നാല്‍ കാലിക പ്രസക്തി ഉള്ളതുമായ വിഷയങ്ങളെ വെള്ളിത്തിരയില്‍ എത്തിക്കാന്‍ രഞ്ജിത്ത് കാണിക്കാറുള്ള ധൈര്യം ഈ സിനിമയിലും കാണാം .

രഘു നന്ദന്‍ എന്ന മാധ്യമ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകനാണ് ലാലേട്ടന്‍ ഇതില്‍. മുഴുക്കുടിയനായ ഇദ്ദേഹം ‘സ്പിരിറ്റ്‌’ എന്ന പേരില്‍ ഒരു നോവല്‍ എഴുതി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. തന്റെ മരണത്തോടെ മാത്രമേ അതിനു പൂര്‍ണത ഉണ്ടാകൂ എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.മാത്രമല്ല ‘ഷോ ദി സ്പിരിറ്റ്‌’ എന്ന പേരില്‍ ഒരു അഭിമുഖ പരിപാടിയുടെ അവതാരകനെന്ന നിലയില്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധനുമാണ് .ഭാര്യയുമായി ബന്ധം വേര്പെടുത്തിയെങ്കിലും മുന്ഭാര്യയും(കനിഹ )  അവുടെ പുതിയ ഭര്‍ത്താവും(ശങ്കര്‍ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്‍) ആണ് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ  ഏറ്റവും വലിയ കൂട്ടുകാര്‍..  എന്നാല്‍ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ഘട്ടത്തില്‍ അയാള്‍ മദ്യപാനം  നിര്‍ത്തുന്നു.മദ്യപാനതിനെതിരായി ജനങ്ങളിലേക്ക് തന്റെ പ്രോഗ്രാമ്മിലൂടെ സന്ദേശം എത്തിക്കുന്നു.

കേള്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ലളിതം എന്ന് തോന്നാമെങ്കിലും ഇന്ന് കേരളത്തില്‍  വര്‍ധിച്ചു വരുന്ന മദ്യാസക്തിക്ക് നേരെ വിരല്‍ ചൂണ്ടുന്നതാണീ ചിത്രം.ഫാന്‍സിനെ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള ആഘോഷ  പടം അല്ലെയല്ലിത്.എന്നാല്‍ ഫാന്‍സ്‌ അടക്കമുള്ള യുവ ജനങള്‍ക്ക് നല്ലൊരു സന്ദേശം നല്‍കാന്‍ രഞ്ജിത്തിനു സാധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

തന്റെ പ്രതിഭയ്ക്ക് ഒട്ടും തന്നെ മങ്ങലെറ്റിട്ടില്ലെന്നു ലാലേട്ടന്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ കൂടി ഈ പടത്തിലൂടെ തെളിയിച്ചു.രഞ്ജിത്തിന്റെ മുന്ചിത്രമായ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ റുപീയില്‍ സംവിധായകന്‍ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു നായകനേക്കാള്‍ മുന്നിട്ടുനിന്നത് .എന്നാല്‍  ഈ ചിത്രത്തില്‍ ലാലേട്ടന്റെ പ്രകടനം ആണ് സംവിധാനത്തക്കാള്‍ ഒരു പടി മുന്നില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്നത്.പടം വിജയിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അത് താരത്തിന്റെ മിടുക്കും ,പൊളിയുമ്പോള്‍ സംവിധായകന്റെ കഴിവുകേടും എന്നാണു ലാല്‍-മമ്മുക്ക ഫാന്‍സ്‌ സാധാരണ പറയാറ്.എന്നാല്‍ ഇവിടെ സത്യത്തില്‍ ലാലേട്ടന്‍ തന്നെയാണ് മുന്നില്‍. അതിനര്‍ത്ഥം രഞ്ജിത്ത് മോശമായി എന്നല്ല.കൂടുതല്‍ മിഴിവുറ്റതാക്കാന്‍ പറ്റുമായിരുന്ന പ്രമേയത്തെ സൂക്ഷ്മത ഇല്ലാതെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പതിവ് ശീലം ഇതിലും കാണാം എന്നേയുള്ളു.എങ്കിലും ഇത്തരമൊരു വിഷയം ധൈര്യപൂര്‍വ്വം സിനിമയാക്കിയ രഞ്ജിത്തിനു എന്റെ വക ഒരു സല്യൂട്ട് .

പലയിടത്തും രസകരമായ മുഹൂര്‍ത്തങ്ങളിലൂടെ രഞ്ജിത്ത് എന്ന തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത്‌ നമ്മെ ചിരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്.എന്നാല്‍ ചാനല്‍ പരിപാടിയുടെ ചില രംഗങ്ങള്‍ ബോറടിപ്പിക്കുന്നവയുമാണ്.(പക്ഷെ  തീരെ മോശവുമല്ല കേട്ടോ ) സ്ഥിരം ജഡ്ജി അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ കാരണവര്‍ വേഷത്തില്‍ നിന്നും മാറിയുള്ള  മധുവിന്റെ അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായ ഹാസ്യ പ്രകടനവും നിലവാരമില്ലാത്ത ഹാസ്യത്തിലൂടെ നമ്മെ വെറുപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന  സുരാജിന്റെ അതിലും അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായ സീരിയസ് പ്രകടനവും ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന്‍റെ സര്‍പ്രൈസ്സുകള്‍ ആണ്.ശങ്കര്‍ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്റെ അലെക്സിയും, നന്ദു അവതരിപ്പിച്ച മണിയന്‍ എന്ന കഥാപാത്രവും,ടിനിടോമിന്റെയും തിലകന്റെയും കൊച്ചു കൊച്ചു കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും നന്നായി .

സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളില്‍ കല്പന മികച്ചു നിന്നപ്പോള്‍ കനിഹയും ലെനയും നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തി.തിയെട്ടരില്‍ കനിഹക്ക് കിട്ടിയ ആര്‍പ്പുവിളികള്‍ അവര്‍ ധരിച്ച ഇറുകിപ്പിടിച്ച വസ്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്കാണെന്നു തീര്‍ച്ച. ലെന ഇനി മേലാല്‍ സ്വന്തം ശബ്ദം കഥാപാത്രത്തിന് നല്‍കാതിരിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുമെന്ന് നമുക്ക് പ്രാര്‍ഥിക്കാം.മകനായി അഭിനയിച്ച മാസ്റെര്‍ പ്രജുല്‍ നല്ല പ്രകടനമാണ് കാഴ്ചവെച്ചത്.

ഷഹബാസ് അമന്‍ എന്ന സംഗീത സംവിധായകന്‍ തന്റെ തന്നെ മുന്‍ സംരംഭമായ  ഇന്ത്യന്‍ റുപീയിലെ ‘ഈ പുഴയും..സന്ധ്യകളും..’ എന്ന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന ഗാനത്തിന്റെ പ്രേതം പിടികൂടിയ കുറെ പാട്ടുകളുമായി ഈ പടത്തിലും കടന്നു കൂടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.റഫീക്ക് അഹമ്മദിന്റെ വരികള്‍ അര്‍ഥസംപുഷ്ടമായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും  അവയ്ക്ക് പുതുജീവന്‍ കൊടുക്കാന്‍ സംഗീത സംവിധായകന് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതവും ശരാശരി മാത്രം.എന്നാല്‍ വേണു ചലിപ്പിച്ച കാമറ ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന്‍റെ  ദ്രിശ്യ മിഴിവ് കൂട്ടാന്‍ രഞ്ജിത്തിനെ കുറച്ചൊന്നുമല്ല സഹായിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.ചാനല്‍ പരിപാടിയുടെ രംഗങ്ങള്‍ പാളിപ്പോവാതിരുന്നതിനു പ്രാധാന കാരണം വേണുവിന്റെ കാമറ തന്നെ.

ഇഷ്ടം പോലെ തെറി (കൂടുതലും F**K എന്ന ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് തെറി ആയിരുന്നു )ലാലേട്ടനെ കൊണ്ട് രഞ്ജിത്ത് പറയിപ്പിക്കുന്നുന്ടെങ്കിലും ഒരു കള്ളുകുടിയന്റെ സ്വാഭാവികമായ പെരുമാറ്റമാകയാല്‍ പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ക്ക് അതത്ര അരോചകമായി തോന്നിയില്ല എന്ന് വേണം കരുതാന്‍.എങ്കിലും നീണ്ടു പോയ ആദ്യ അഭിമുഖ സീന്‍ ഒന്ന് കൂടെ നന്നാക്കാമായിരുന്നു.

രണ്ജിത്തിന്റെയോ ലലേട്ടന്റെയോ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച പടമല്ലെങ്കില്‍കൂടി, ഇരുവരും ചേര്‍ന്ന് ഒരുക്കിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളില്‍ വളരെ മികച്ച ഒന്നാണ് സ്പിരിറ്റ്‌.(റോക്ക് ആന്‍ഡ്‌ റോള്‍ ഓര്‍ക്കുമല്ലോ).നല്ല സിനിമകള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകണമെന്ന് ആത്മാര്‍ഥമായി ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന , അത് നടപ്പില്‍ വരുത്തുന്ന ഒരു സംവിധായകന്റെ സത്യസന്ധമായ ശ്രമമാണ് സ്പിരിറ്റ്‌.നമ്മുടെ കേരളത്തിലെ കുടിയന്മാരെ ഒറ്റ പടം കൊണ്ട് നന്നാക്കാന്‍ രണ്ജിത്തോ ലാലേട്ടനോ  അല്ല സാക്ഷാല്‍ ദൈവംതമ്പുരാന്‍ വിചാരിച്ചാലും നടപ്പില്ല എന്ന സത്യം നിലനില്‍ക്കെ, എവനെങ്കിലും ഒരുത്തന്‍ നന്നാകുന്നുടെങ്കില്‍ നന്നാകട്ടെ എന്ന് മാത്രം കരുതി ആവണം ഇവര്‍ ഈ പടം ചെയ്തത്.

നല്ല സിനിമകള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നില്ല എന്ന് പരാതിപ്പെടുന്ന അഥവാ ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ തന്നെ അതെല്ലാം മോഷണ കഥകള്‍ ആണെന്ന് പറയുന്ന എല്ലാ മലയാളികളും കണ്ടിരിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു ചിത്രം തന്നെ ഇത്.കാരണം ഈ കഥ നമ്മുടെ ഓരോരുത്തരുടെതുമാണ്.. ഇന്നത്തെ കേരളത്തിന്റെ നേര്‍കാഴ്ച്ചയാണ്.

The only good news is Mohanlal

All in good spirits, only not good enough

‘Spirit’ is one of those movies which don’t exactly justify Mohanlal in the midst of things, and yet his presence adds greatly to the otherwise mediocre punch it packs.

This is one preachy affair from Renjith, in every scene, dialogue and syllable. The director, who has been spearheading the revival of Malayalam cinema for quite a while now, simply falls back on the legendary actor to drill stuff about liquor-consumption into the audience’s heads. Stuff which everyone already knows and acknowledges.

Let’s get the plot out of the way, because there is not much of it anyway. Reghunandan (Mohanlal) is an alcoholic-in-denial, who quit his lucrative job at a bank in England a while back, travelled around the world, and learnt five international languages to his credit. You’d think after all that he’d be as wise and quiet as a Zen monk, but no. The liquor which fuels him also transforms him into the Hulk at the slightest provocation. While this comes in handy at a popular talk-show he hosts on TV where he strips naked people in power, it has royally screwed up his private life.

The only friends he has are his ex-wife and her husband, so you get the drift.

So anyway, after a couple of stray incidents like bodies dropping dead and a bit of self-introspection (“I just carpet-bombed my deaf son’s Birthday party”), our hero mends his ways and limps into the sunlight and clear speech. Subsequently, he decides to transform his talk-show on the lines of Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate.

I am an admirer of Renjith Balakrishnan. However, I cannot help but think that this is his weakest offering in recent years. Yes, the film has a strong social message. Yes, Mohanlal has some lines in the movie that sparkle with wit and wisdom. And yes, portraying a raving, expletive-spewing drunk for three-quarters of a movie is right up the actor’s alley.

What I do have a problem with, is that the movie fails to relate with the viewer. The characters seem oddly disconnected, and often appear as mere caricatures. Chemistry, if any, exists only between Mohanlal and a bartender (Tini Tom, a criminally underrated actor) of the bar he frequents.

Madhu makes the most of the measly screen time he gets but other actors in supporting roles including leading lady Kaniha, Lena and debutant Shankar Ramakrishnan are rather one-dimensional. Kalpana gets a role of befitting her acting caliber after a long time as the tortured wife of a paranoid alcoholic (Nandu). Thilakan…now why is this extraordinary actor cast for a role that gives him all of a minute of screen-time?

The plot itself seems connected by a dangerously fragile thread. Loose ends go beyond a pardonable measure, so much so that as the end credits roll, you feel mildly cheated. For instance, a considerable portion of the movie is devoted to a revelation that one of the central characters has been diagnosed with cancer, but everyone seems to have forgotten about it two scenes later.

Having said all that, this does address a large proportion of the society and is a good lesson for youngsters who have taken up the bottle. While the movie does not explore the root causes of alcoholism, it sweeps through all strata of the populace who have fallen prey to the vice.

Perhaps Pranchiyettan and The Saint set the bar too high, or perhaps Mohanlal’s own alcoholic-blitzkrieg ‘Tony Kurishingal’ in No: 20 Madras Mail did.

As I made my way out of the theater with a surprisingly quiet crowd, I thought, if this movie is ever remade in Hollywood, which actor can be cast as the lead to better effect in a plot like this?

One name popped up. Homer Simpson.
