La Galeria Cosmo, se inaugura en Barcelona con una exposición que presenta la obra de 3 artistas nacionales de diferentes disciplinas.
Lo más llamativo son las esculturas de Cristian Herrera Dalmau, armaduras huecas a base de alambre entrelazado, creando formas a partir de sus líneas básicas; los muebles realizados con está técnica son increíbles, pero quizás donde mejor se entiende la intención del artista es en la serie de elefantes, con los que se muestra como las mínimas líneas pueden crear la percepción de una figura u objeto incluso anque esté incompleto.

Más discretos son los dibujos de Mercedes Mangrané, del tamaño de media hoja papel, de trazos negros sobre blanco. Las líneas están ligeramente pixeladas, en unos dibujos muy cotidianos que recrean estancias, espacios de trabajo, o rincones de una casa.

Para completar, una pantalla reproduce el videoarte de Gerard Ortín, una mezcla original de imágenes que evocan intensas sensaciones que van desde la inocencia de la naturaleza hasta los límites de la emoción humana.

Así se presenta la Galeria Cosmo, una nueva alternativa para la exposición de arte, en un espacio diáfano, que además cuenta con una agradable cafetería, ideal para tomar un té con uno de sus deliciosos muffings, un sandwich a medio día o un mojito después de cenar.

La cuidada decoración, minimalista pero acogedora, y la sala de exposiciones al fondo hacen dan al lugar un ambiente distinguido y agradable, que apuesta por nuevos artistas de diversas disciplinas.

Most people are concerned about money right now.

I am in need of an IV drip connected to a money bag myself.  The place where I bartend is only scheduling me for 3-4 shifts a week, and like many restaurants, is struggling.

So one part of determining if raw food eating is “worth” it is the dollars spent. I’ll do my best to give a dollars & cents breakdown on what eating this way is costing me and how it compares to when I ate a “normal” American diet.

Another price to pay for eating raw is taking an honest look at the things you give up to do so.  Pizza delivery and cheap beer.  Pitchers of mojitos to wash down some gourmet Cuban cuisine.  Street food (especially TACO TRUCKS!)  BBQ joints…did I mention Taco Trucks?

I knew my moto was back in Cali when I came across this taco truck on a cold night just south of the border. The Oregon border!

Finally, anytime you examine somethings true cost you have to figure out just what the hell you’re getting out of it.  AKA…what are the benefits?

So is it worth it? I’m no expert and I can’t answer this (or any other question) for you.  But let you inside my abnormally large head and show you exactly how I feel at this juncture about the costs of eating raw…

Today (part 1) will focus on the monetary cost.  Tomorrow (part 2) will look at the cost of giving up things you love and are used to…like taco trucks.  And in (part 3) I’ll wrap it up with a snazzy cost/benefits analysis (sorry no charts or Excel spreadsheets) that attempts to explore the sometimes measurable, sometimes intangible benefits of a raw food life.

Part One

IS EATING RAW MORE EXPENSIVE THAN COOKED?

First few times you walk over to the raw “section” at the health food store (you know you’ve become a radical marginal member of society when you are shopping in a specialized section of a specialty store) two things will probably jump to your attention…

My first thought was “This is a really tiny section.  Not really a section actually, more like an end-cap.”

My second thought was, “Holy shit!  $14 for peanut butter!?”

Bulk Items

To make matters worse, a lot of the things you “need” to get started are bulk items. These types of items will probably last you a month, but they require payment in full today.

As an example, I bought a big bottle of spirulina for $43.  Two weeks later I’m only halfway through it.  But when I

was standing there in the store trying to imagine how bad something that grows on top of a swamp might taste, and ruminating on the sad fact that lately I don’t even make $43 some nights, well lets just say it wasn’t easy to hand over the green required to buy the green. (Spirulinas really more blue-green).

My conclusion? These items aren’t in actuality expensive and can actually make raw eating more economical in some instances. At $1.4o per serving, roughly the price of a Coke, instead of corn syrup, chemicals, and an ingredient list that reads more like toilet bowl cleaner than beverage; you get the most concentrated bio-available protein on the planet.

So, score one for the spirulina and other bulk raw items you might want like cacao nibs, hemp oil, and raw honey.

Pre-packaged stuff VS. Produce

When you are new and trying to “adjust” to raw  for the first time you will naturally gravitate to the expensive pre-packaged raw items because they sorta look like what you think foods supposed to look like.

I stood there having a Homer Simpson style conversation with myself that went something like this… “Ahhhh…crackers!  I know what crackers are! This is a peculiarly small little bag with only 6 crackers in it…not exactly a Costco size box of Wheat Thins…but it says here…sun-dried tomato crackers…mmm…sounds yummy…and they are only…let me just turn this little package over and find the price….$9!  WTF!”

I bought them anyways.  Because I was scared of not having what I refer to as “food-food.”  And you know what allows you to psychologically pay NINE BUCKS for SIX CRACKERS?  The little sticker on the package that says “raw.”  And do you know what those crackers taste like, I’ll give you a hint…it’s a 4 letter word…start’s with an “S”…and it’s not sun dried tomatoes!

I’ve been reading a lot of other raw foodists blogs and watching their You Tube channels and tweeting with them and I’m starting to get the feeling that the longer one eats raw, the more likely they are to do almost all of their shopping at a Farmer’s Market, or in a good organic produce section.

My conclusion? Go ahead and buy the pre-packaged stuff.  Try it.  See what you like and what you don’t.  Soon you will save the dehydrated breads and little $4 baggies of superfood trail mix for when you need the convenience or the comfort.  Spend the bulk of your dough on fruits & veggies that are pound for pound, yes even at organic prices, the best value for your food dollar.

11/14 UPDATE!  Went to Farmer’s Market today and loaded up on fresh veggies/greens/and fruit.  I even bought a big jar of raw wildflower honey.  Grand Total = $40  Because I’m 100% raw I also got “free” breakfast out of the deal just walking around enjoying all the samples being handed out.  When I came home I took everything out and put it on the table so I could see what all I bought.  I had to take a picture…amazing isn’t it?  The honey will last a couple weeks and I’m sharing this with my girlfriend, so the real cost to me for the week I estimate to be closer to$25!!!

How Much Are You NOT Spending?

This is really fair question to ask, and the one that pushed me over the edge on the money issue.  Do this little exercise yourself, and be brutally honest about it.

I added up what I spent each week on:

• Coffee. Up to 2 weeks ago I was spending over $6 per day at Starbucks.
• Booze. I’m talking drinks out (w/ tips), drinks in, wine, beer, all of it! For me drinking on the cheap was still costing  me over $70 per week. And that’s with a job where I can have a drink or two for free.
• Cooked food groceries. I love to cook.  Shop pretty smart at Trader Joe’s.  My share of weekly groceries is about $40 per week.
• Eating out. Make sure you include any fast food, lunches out, frozen yogurts, movie popcorn, brunch, all that!  I had really cut back lately.  In the past my girlfriend and I would grab sushi or Mexican food at least 3x per week. But due to lack of work and recently moving, I’m gonna say I was spending about $25 per week eating out.
• Cigarettes. I don’t smoke cigarettes, so this wasn’t an issue with me.  But if you do smoke, we’re talking big bucks here, and you ARE going to stop smoking if you go 100% raw.  Maybe not immediately, but soon.
• Other drugs including prescriptions. In one way or another, to quote Weezer, “We are ALL on drugs.”  I like to party, and think recreational substances have their place. But for arguments sake assume you won’t be spending money on that after you get hooked up to nature’s crack–raw food.  Also include most (not all, like I don’t think eating raw is going to do anything in the contraceptive department) pharmaceuticals.  Especially meds for cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, acid reflux (my GERD is 100% GONE), etc.

So for me…about $200 per week.  What’s your total?

So that’s $200 per week that I can apply to eating 100% raw food, drinking fresh-squeezed vibrant juices, and even eating out every so often in a little raw cafe or gourmet raw eatery.  $200 is A LOT of vegetables and fruit.

Another aspect of how much it really costs to eat raw vegan organic foods that I hadn’t thought of until I read Derek Markham’s blog today…is all the money not spent at the Doctors office.  In his case he acknowledges that as a father he chooses to spend a large portion of his families income on fresh organic food.  Derek says, “Our kids deserve the best fuel for their minds and bodies, and eating this way is our ‘health insurance’.” That blew me away.

What I’m NOT suggesting is that you cancel your health insurance (if you have health insurance) and count that as potential savings if you go raw.  But imagine the money you, your family, and the country would save by having less sick days, co-pays, depression, and chronic illness…

My conclusion? Money should have nothing to do with whether or not someone chooses to go raw.  If anything, I am spending a little less money each week to give my body an abundance of nutrients and delicious food.

So I was lucky enough to be invited to Company Magazines Awards Show on Thursday 5th November at Gilgamesh in Camden. And what an evening it was! After basically running there in my not so very practical shoes, I arrived to a cocktail reception….mojitos anyone?! Thank you! Then it was onto the awards – to which it was a clean sweep for new high street favourites, River Island, who took home four of the awards.

After the awards, it was party time….and who better to DJ at a fashion do then the most lovely Henry Holland. The dancefloor filled immediately as Mr. Holland played songs from the likes Whitney Houston to my guilty pleasure, Cheryl Cole. On the other side of the room, fashionistas were getting their guilty kicks from having a go at Sing-Star. The most popular song of the night you ask – ‘Especially For You’ by Kylie and Jason, of course.

Je pense que l’intégration est belle et bien finie et que tout va pour le mieux. Malgré les embrouilles passées, les batailles manquées et les frayeurs oubliées ! I’m ready for studies (enfin presque) j’suis surtout ready pour aller au Private et boire des Mojitos et fumer dans le fumoir aéré pour me la jouer Mariah Carey (gimme your love gimme your love) avec Pauline. D’ailleurs Pauline c’est ma meilleure amie mais le dîtes pas autour on est ” trop proches ” mdrrr !

Mis à part ça y’a quelques inconvénients à habiter seule dans une résidence : je peux plus chanter super fort comme si j’étais seule au monde… Je peux plus danser comme une débile parce que j’ai pas de rideaux… Je peux plus faire des faux clips devant ma glace parce que j’me prends le mur et l’étagère… Je peux plus aller aux toilettes la porte ouverte parce que j’ai pas de rideaux mdr… Je dois utiliser parfois le balais parce que j’peux pas allumer l’aspirateur à n’importe quelle heure pour n’importe quelle miette… Et encore j’en oublies pleins je suis sûre !

Ingredientes
12 folhas frescas de hortelã
1 colher (sopa) de açúcar
Suco de 1 limão
100ml de rum claro
250ml de club soda ou água com gás
6 pedras de gelo

Modo de Preparo
Esfregue as laterais internas de 2 copos de 200ml com 2 folhas de hortelã cada. Coloque as 6 folhas em cada um deles (use as folhas que aromatizou o copo). Divida o açúcar e o limão entre os copos e usando um socador macere as folhas com o açúcar. Divida o rum e o club soda entre os copos, misture e sirva em seguida com 3 pedras de gelo em cada copo.

Well it’s that time of year again. The seasons are changing, and so is our menu. So this weekend will be the last weekend we carry Mojitos regularly until spring.  And to celebrate, this Saturday Night is our first annual Last of the Mojitos celebration.

“La sucesión de hechos”

Se puso las botas. Quedaba un largo camino. Al menos él lo creía así. Se ató los cordones y puso rumbo a su aventura. Nada más salir de su casa, se dio cuenta de que la gente le miraba extrañada. Las palabras de los demás retumbaban en su cabeza sin que él pudiera descifrarlas. No sabía lo que ocurría, había preparado durante varios meses este viaje, y a las primeras de cambio se sintió sin fuerzas para realizarlo, todo lo planeado se hizo añicos. Había olvidado vestirse.

Iban a toda prisa por una carretera nacional. Llegaban tarde al acontecimiento. Las ruedas de la furgoneta chirriaban, y su sonido se hacía dueño del silencio reinante entre las altas montañas por las que serpenteaba el camino. Al fondo: su objetivo, varias luces de colores. Llevaban tiempo estudiando los posibles destinos que proclamaba una extraña señal recibida en el laboratorio a través del espacio sideral. Estaban seguros de que en esas montañas, y no en otras, era donde por fin encontrarían vida inteligente. Pero no, era la guardia civil.

-“¡Rápido, por aquí, entre esos arbustos no nos encontrará!”. Llegaron exhaustos. Venían de recorrer varios kilómetros intentando dar esquinazo a la monstruosidad que se les avecinaba. Todos ellos se sentían culpables, mas ninguno sabía cómo había acabado en esta terrible situación. Habían sido engañados por sus propios jefes. Y ahora les obligaban a pagar las consecuencias. De repente, a varios metros del arbusto donde se escondían, se oyó la impasible voz de la crisis: “O me como vuestro dinero o caéis en la más inmensa pobreza”. A lo que uno replicó: “¿Pero no es lo mismo?.

-Este verano voy a hacer de todo. Este es mi verano, la juerga estival, la creatividad desbordada. Pondré en hora mis proyectos. Estudiaré desde el 1 de Agosto, sí, es buena fecha. Así me da tiempo a hacerme algún viajecito. Mojitos, sí, quiero mojitos. Pero bueno, manos a la obra. Voy a hacer una lista con todas las tareas que tengo que llevar a cabo. ¡Tch!, Igual hasta pinto un cuadro, total, no tengo nada que hacer. Bien, veamos… ¿qué día es hoy?

Detta är sista inlägget om Barca. Har lite svårt att slita mig bara, det var så NICE! Jag tror mamma helt klart är nöjd med sin 60-årspresent. Jag, svägerskan och A också.
Så, jag avslutar med några små tips.

El Born
Visst var detta en underbar stadsdel! Små, charmiga gränder fullspäckade med tapasrestauranger och “hål-i-väggen”-vinbarer och designerbutiker. Mysigt på dagen, och rätt ställe för mat och vin och mojitos på kvällen. El Xampanyeria på C. Montecada såg verkligen charmigt och stimmigt ut, men var fullt tyvärr. Stället vi hamnade på snett mittemot var dock ett riktigt bra alternativ, med nice tapas och god cava. Dock gott om mysiga ställen och bara att droppa in på något som verkar schysst.

Shopping
Åh, det finns ju så myyyycket! Alla stora märken såklart, men också en hel del vi inte har hemma. Och skor. Så mycket skor. Ungefär samma priser som hemma, men kul utbud. Hela gamla stan med utgångspunkt vid Plaza Catalanya är bra område för shopping.

Maten
På tips från Kristin (tack!) gick vi på Lonja de Tapas en kväll. Grymt bra tapas! Förutom tapas (som det blev alla kvällar) är ju en paella inte fel. Paellan nedan med bästa utsikt – över Barcelonas härliga strand. Stranden förresten – hade vi bara haft fler dagar hade jag gärna spenderat mer tid där.

Sightseeing
En hop-on-hop-off buss är alltid ett bra sätt att se stora delar av en stad på kort tid. Och faktiskt så är det rätt skönt att sitta och softa på ett busstak i ett par timmar också… Röd linje åkte vi, på rekommendation från vår trevliga lägenhetsuthyrare – överlägset bäst enligt honom. Den passerar bl.a Sagrada Familia och Nou Camp – och mycket annat. Blå går förbi olympiska byn och vackra Plaza Espana – vilket vi dock ej hann med denna gång. Från olympiska byn har man fin utsikt över stan, och där var jag när jag och H var i Barca för ett par år sedan. Och sen – fotbollen. Ah, fotbollen. Det var också något jag gjorde senast men ej nu (trots Zlatan – men vi tajmade ingen match tyvärr). Helt fantastisk upplevelse! Nou Camp i sig, men framför allt med kamp. Grymt.

Den här gången fick vi nöja oss med att se Zlatan från busstaket. Imponerande att klä en hel husfasad dock…

Barcelona är verkligen en stad som har allt, och när jag är i en sån stad kan jag inte låta bli att undra hur man egentligen fungerar som väljer att bo i Sverige… Hade det inte varit för familjen och vännerna hade valet varit rätt enkelt!

För övrigt – vi åkte med Ryan Air till Girona. Det man inte får i komfort har man igen i sparade pengar, och jag tycker det är helt okej om en resa inte är längre än denna – runt 3 timmar. Weekendresor är en lisa för själen och ett enkelt sätt att få lite lyxkant på tillvaron. Jag älskar det – ge mig mer!

Grapevine arrives in Albert Road, this November. This special event will be held at the Loft (above the kings). Friday November 6th. Expect full DSS decor, lighting, and sound system. A few weeks back, I decided I was going to learn how to make mojitos. Not only was I going to learn how to make mojitos, but I was also going to slightly tweak the icing for a batch of sugar cookies so that they matched. Simple enough, right?

A friend of mine recommended a video online that outlined the mojito making process. Not bad. Not bad. Looked simple enough. I watched the guy in the video, pushed pause when it came to the recipe (the mixing is about 6 minutes into the video with the recipe flashing up at the end), and I was set.

First off, I did not have a juicer. No big deal, I thought. I have enough limes for an army, but I figured I could easily squeeze out the juice into the bowl and have more than enough for several mojitos. Well yes, technically I could. What I didn’t realize was how hard it would be to do that to each half or quarter of a lime. At the end of the process, I had one large measuring cup full of lime juice, two throbbing wrists, and at least three fingers stinging from the lime juice. But the fresh smell of the lime juice was so perfect that it was so so worth it.

This would be what my kitchen looked like at this point. As I reached to begin to pull together the ingredients for the mojito, I managed to knock over the lime juice, which fell all over my trash can and across the floor, causing me to jump back and dump out the entire contents of my dog Dixie’s water bowl. Lime juice FAIL.

After I spent about 20 minutes cleaning up all of the mess of the above, I found myself headed in to the grocery store to buy a small container of lime juice. Not as good as the fresh, but until I get a juicer, it’s definitely the way to go. I returned and was finally able to get the mojito together. The first one didn’t come out quite right, leading me to experiment and ultimately decide that I just needed to have allowed enough time for the simple syrup to cool, so it thickened more than the runnier version I was using in my first attempt at the mojito. By the end, they were coming out quite good. I’d be curious to try another variation on the recipe as I found this one to be a bit tart. Perhaps too heavy on the lime juice?

For the sugar cookies, I’ll confess I did go with the frozen version of the dough simply as a shortcut. For the icing, I mixed together confectioners sugar and milk, including just a bit of milk until it reached the right consistency so it would not be too runny. I took what little was left of the unspilled lime juice and added just a couple of drops into the mixture. I added one quick drop of mint extract and a couple of drops of green food coloring. I added in some shredded up mint leaves thinking that would perhaps add a bit of a minty taste to the mix, but found it a bit visually distracting in the cookies where that was noticable. It almost made them look like there was trash in those (so not the case!) so I’d not add that in next time around.
