Russia is concerned over the stance of the United States and the European Union on a United Nations resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism and the desecration of World War II monuments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia said on Sunday.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted on December 18, 2009 a draft resolution proposed by Russia on combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

The resolution is aimed at condemning attempts to heroize the Nazi movement and former Waffen-SS members and desecrate monuments to the fighters against Nazism.

“It is highly bewildering and regrettable that the United States voted against the resolution, supported by an overwhelming majority of UN member states, and a number of states, including all European Union members, abstained in the vote on the draft,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said it was surprised by the position of the former Soviet republics of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova which abstained from the vote, even though their peoples fought against Nazis during World War Two.

“We believe this is disrespect for the heroism of those who glorified these countries by their heroic deeds in the struggle against Nazism,” the statement said.

On Saturday, the Georgian authorities demolished a memorial to WWII heroes in the country’s second largest city, Kutaisi. The blast, which was used to demolish the monument, killed two people.

Russia has condemned the Georgian war memorial demolition blast as an act of barbarism and state vandalism.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the Georgian authorities “have committed an act of state vandalism, offending the feelings of any civilized person.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today urged the government of Moldova and the leadership of the Orthodox Church to punish those responsible for uprooting a Hanukkah menorah on a main public square in Moldova’s capital, Chisinau, and replacing it with an Orthodox cross.

A video shows an Orthodox priest, identified by the Moldovan media as Fr. Anatoliy Chirbik, leading a demonstration of about 100 people yesterday at Stefan the Great Square and saying, “We are an Orthodox country. Stephan the Great defended our country from all kinds of kikes [ha ha, sounds like a Jew-media lie. He probably just said, "Jews"], and now they come and put their menorah here. This is anarchy.” The priest and demonstrators then uprooted the menorah and dumped it behind a statue of Moldovan national hero King Stefan the Great. [What an insult to St Stefan!]

“The Moldovan government and the Orthodox Church must punish the perpetrators of this despicable anti-Semitic [sic] crime and send a clear signal to Moldovan society and to the Jewish community that the government and the church will not tolerate anti-Semitism [sic],” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. [Foxman must stick his head back in the toilet.]

In a letter to Nicolae Chirtoaca, Moldova’s Ambassador to the United States, ADL called on his government “to apprehend and punish the perpetrators of this anti-Semitic [sic] crime.” The League said it was particularly shocked at reports that 15 to 20 police officers were at the site during the protest, but did little to intervene. [On what grounds? Because ADL-approved methods weren't applied: Jewish lawyers arguing before Jewish judges about how deeply, deeply offended they are to have to see a Cross and be reminded that Jesus Christ the Son of God lives forever?]

ADL also expressed disappointment with the official statement from leaders of the Moldovan Orthodox Church, who called the attack “a sad event.”

“The reported reaction of the Orthodox Church falls far short of a vigorous condemnation,” Mr. Foxman said. “The church needs to make clear that this sort of behavior is unacceptable, and should take action to punish any church officials who were involved in organizing the demonstration, including Fr. Chirbik.” [Maybe they have taken action, then forgave the people involved. You'd think the ADL would be too busy buying politicians, raping America, pissing on Christ and trying to justify the genocide of the Palestinians to bother with a minor matter in a faraway land.]

Moldova Justice Minister Alexandru Tenase was quoted by Moldova’s Publik TV as saying the government would not tolerate the desecration of religious objects and “will apply the harshest penalties to discourage anyone attempting similar actions.” [There you go. So what the fuck are these defamatory ADL bastards complaining about!?]

The Hanukkah menorah was erected by members of the local Jewish community. The menorah, which stands 5-feet tall, was reinstalled and is now under police protection.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Yaacov Agam Friday lit the World’s Largest Chanukah Menorah in Manhattam.

It proudly stands at New York’s most fashionable plaza, Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, by Central Park, between the Plaza and the Pierre Hotels.

“The Menorah stands as a symbol of freedom and democracy, strength and inspiration delivering a timely and poignant message to each person on an individual basis,” said Rabbi Shmuel Butman, who will light the Menorah nightly together with other dignitaries.

The Menorah is certified by the McGinnis [sic] Book of Records as the World’s Largest. Its designer renowned artist Yaacov Agam said it was inspired by a hand drawing by the Rambam of the original Menorah in the Holy Temple of Jerusalem.

The Menorah stood in miniature on the desk of the Rebbe who personally Ok’d its form. The Rebbe wanted this Menorah to be the largest and when there was talk about making a large Menorah in another city the Rebbe asked for that Menorah to be smaller.

The 32-foot high, gold colored, 4,000 pound steel structure will be lighted nightly with genuine oil lamps. Specially designed glass chimneys will protect the Chanukah lights from the Central Park winds. Unlike the phony “chimney” next to the phony “gas chamber” at Auschwitz, NY’s Jewish chimney actually works.

Due to the height of the Menorah, it will be lit nightly with the help of a Con Edison “cherry-picker” crane as well as two lifts that will lift the lighters to the “Menorah Heights.”

Mayor Bloomberg addressed the crowd from the “Menorah Heights” and spoke about the meaning of the Festival of lights and what it meant to him as a Jew.

FAIRFIELD — You didn’t have to be Jewish to enjoy Tuesday night’s lighting of an oversized menorah in Sherman Green. It was the second outdoor menorah lighting in town this year.

Bob Seirup, a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission, though not Jewish, said he came to Tuesday’s lighting “to show my solidarity and support.”

After a brief prayer by Cantor Avi Schwarzmer, Rabbi J. Stock climbed a ladder bearing a torch, and lit five of the eight candles that, in this case, were actually flares.

“This is a beautiful outpouring of community support,” First Selectman Kenneth Flatto said. “The whole point of this holiday is the celebration of freedom of religion.”

TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) – An 8-year-old boy was sent home from school and ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after he was asked to make a Christmas drawing and sketched what appeared to be a stick figure of Jesus on a cross, the child’s father said Tuesday.

Chester Johnson said his son made the drawing on Dec. 2 after his second-grade teacher asked children to sketch something that reminded them of the holiday. The assignment came just days after the family had visited the holiday lights display at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro, where Johnson said his son seemed taken with the religious statues he saw there.

“When he seen the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross, that’s what he drew,” Johnson said. “He liked that. That drew his eye.”

Johnson, who works at the school as a janitor on a per diem basis, said administrators were concerned the boy drew Xs for Jesus’ eyes, and particularly worried when his son said he’d drawn himself on the cross after officials pressed him about who he’d drawn.

Johnson said his son might have been worried about getting in trouble if he said he drew Jesus. “If he said it was him, it was more like a cartoon,” Johnson said.

Superintendent Julie Hackett said she could not discuss an individual student and did not address the drawing specifically or the teacher’s reaction to it, but did say the school has safety protocols in place that were followed.

Hackett did not return multiple calls from The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Johnson said his son gets specialized reading and speech instruction. He showed a reporter an evaluation that said the boy was not a threat to himself or others. The boy has been back in school since Dec. 7.

Johnson said he assured his son that he didn’t do anything wrong, but he said his boy was traumatized by the incident and demanding an apology from school officials. Johnson said he’s also looking to have his son transferred to another school.

“You can’t walk back in an establishment that didn’t have confidence in you … and continue to do business with them,” he said. “He’s been excluded from all the other kids, man.”

For the majority of westerners,  religious persecution is a strange and foreign concept.   Most of us view political and religious fanaticism such as pogroms or the Auto de fé as a distant memory of a dark and uncultured era now long gone.  Of course, there are always a few regrettable exceptions to this.  But to me, incidents like Neo Nazis marching on Pennsylvania Avenue just further highlight the beauty of the first amendment. If you feel strongly about something, get a permit, pack your soap box and have a go at it. By all means.

This week as I was surfing on-line, I stumbled upon this news clip.  Apparently, the Jewish community in Moldova had setup a Menorah to celebrate Hanukkah (after having been given a permit to do so).  This didn’t go down well with Moldova’s eparchy of the Russian Orthodox church.  So under the charismatic leadership of Father Anatoly Chirbik (and another hammer wielding priest), the local community staged a get-together and in a very orderly manner, proceeded to crash the celebration.  It’s all on tape: the honor guard, the banners with the miraculous icons, the sprinkling of holy water, the burning of incense, and even a live accompaniment by a chorus of Gregorian chanters.

When I first watched the clip, I thought that it was just another Borat promotional, but after listening to Father Chirbik’s speech (excerpt below), I realized that it was actually the real thing.

“We are an Orthodox country. Stephen the Great and Holy defended our country from all kinds of Jews, and now they come and put their menorah here. This is anarchy.” 

My initial confusion was understandable as Borat’s explanation of the origin of his brother’s madness were not dissimilar in substance and style from the one made by Father Chirbik:

Bilo [Borat’s brother] had "a demon", so we chiseled a hole the size of kestrel egg in his head and put a dry fish inside to eat the demon. This worked for a while, but then "the demon” took his revenge and made Bilo retarded.

Even more perplexing than the speech, were the participants.  The expressions on their faces ranged from gratefulness for having been chosen to join the wrecking crew to religious piety and patriotic zeal.  By all accounts, this was a family event; complete with well dressed moms, dads, grandparents and young kids in tow. It was by no means your stereotypical lynch mob wielding torches and pitch forks.

But looks can be deceiving. Just because someone was born in the 20th century and dresses appropriately doesn’t automatically elevate him to the rank of a modern human being.  Theodor Adorno once stated: “’[The] Enlightenment has always aimed at liberating men from fear...” Alas, it seems that large segments of the world’s population are still firmly planted in the midst of the savage Byzantine era, and if the Moldova incident is any indication, they are not in a great rush to get out of there soon.

The Age of Enlightenment and the political reforms that it spawned (like the Bill of Rights)  have repeatedly demonstrated that church and state do not mix well and are best enjoyed separately.  For US immigrants the likes of Irving Berlin, who experienced religious prosecution first hand, the freedom of religion has always been a sign of a divine blessing.

Mihai Ghimpu Moldova’s acting president and parliamentary speaker on Tuesday condemned a group of Orthodox Christians for removing a menorah during a celebration of the Jewish Hanukkah festival in the capital. The holiday, also known as the Festival of Lights, commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in 164 B.C. after its desecration by the Syrians. It is observed by lighting a special nine-branched menorah.

Some 100 people led by an Orthodox priest uprooted the candelabrum placed in Chisinau’s central square on Sunday, saying Moldova is an Orthodox country. The Jewish community demanded the government and the Orthodox Church respond to the xenophobic act. (The Orthodox Church counts some 70% of Moldovans as its members.)

According to the recent  Statement of group of European parliamentarians Moldovan government testifies «total disregard for the rights of opposition in parliament, intimidation of opposition’ representatives, recent changes of legislative base that obviously lead to raised instability in Moldovan society».« It is very dangerous to ignore such development at the border with European Union”.

«Situation when the party which has accumulated on elections almost 45 % of electoral votes is excluded from decision-making process is abnormal»,  said Walter Baer, political scientist, while commenting on use by Moldovan authorities of the tools on constraining the rights of opposition. He said that European Parliament should carefully follow how the genuine democratic values in Republic Moldova are observed.

Mihai Ghimpu, the interim president of Moldova, leader of the Liberal party, has declared ..”to “Lord’s will“ Moldova should be populated by Romanians. “I revere those who fought for peace, for democracy, for making the Lord’s wish come true so that this land would be populated by Romanians, in Russia – by Russians, France – by French people, Germany – by Germans“.

Elena Misikova, director of Foundation “Gratitude“commented: “These are inacceptable statements…. mentioning that such declarations made by the head of state “disorientate the whole society, because its composition is not ordinary one, it is not a monoethnic state, and especially it is not populated by just one ethnicity“. Politicians, who hold such high positions, “have to pay attention to the national feelings of all groups living in Moldova“.

Before I left for Moldova, I saw a picture of Moldova with an old lada driving with HUGE packages of toilet paper on top. I got quite a laugh out of it.

I got to Moldova and my laughter quickly turned to tears. The toilet paper was rough and sandpaper like. Sometimes, it was not toilet paper, but rather old paper. The glossy magazine pages were the worst.

My friends, Dan and Helen, get huge props for sending me soft toilet paper (2 large boxes) to Moldova.  I used it sparingly and treasured it.  Yes, I realize that sounds pathetic, but please, don’t judge until you have lived it.  Or just use newspaper, magazine pages and sandpaper for a week and then get back to me.

I have found that similarly, around the world, I have run into the same problem. I even have complaints about the toilet paper in the Frankfurt airport. I mean, I am not that picky— or, maybe I am.

New topic: Holiday party.

I got hired with a great group of 40 people. We had a little holiday shindig two weeks ago (take a look at the previous post for a picture).

Part of the shindig was a secret holiday gift exchange. These were the exact directions given:

If you wish to participate in the secret santa gift exchange, please bring a wrapped gift (no more than $5-$10) which you would consider a “necessity” to take overseas.

Eleven people participated.  We were each given a number.  The first person choose a gift and opened it.  The next person could “steal” someone’s already opened gift thus allowing them to choose another wrapped gift, or could pick their own wrapped gift to open.  First person opens.  She gets toilet paper, a plastic bag, a bag of candies for the kiddies, and a bag of coins to tip.  Second person opens a bag.  She gets 4 rolls of toilet paper and some Kazakhstani chocolate.  The 11th person also got toilet paper.

See! I am not the only one.

Chanukah nowadays is about party hopping, eating latkes and sufganiyot, spinning dreidels and lighting Menorahs, but while it seems all so jolly one must not forget, that just as the Maccabees, we have and must fight the battles that confront our generation.

Apparently some Moldavian priests don’t like Menorahs all that much. Check out how Orthodox Christian priest, Anatoliy Chirbik, and some followers take down a Menorah and replace it with a cross.

Chirbik was quoted “Stephan the Great defended our country from all kinds of Zjids [deragotory term for Jews], and now they come and put their menorah here. This is anarchy.” Dear holiness Chirbik, you are absolutely right– a Menorah in Moldova is a complete display of anarchy, and your angry crowd of ignorant followers are just trying to reinstate some divine order, right? Oh, but your holiness Chirbik just for your information that guy you worship on the cross, well he was a member of the Tribe– I hope that doesn’t make you hate him too.

    A habitat is a more permanent ecosystem that has stabilized and reached dynamic equilibrium.  The types of living organisms in a habitat are likely to remain there in the future, and the habitat will probably maintain some degree of constancy.

   Groups of species living in a unique environment constitute a habitat.  Habitats are classified based on their physical and chemical properties, inhabitants, and other features.

The environment may be classified based on its topography, soil, temperature, rainfall, moisture, and many other physical characteristics. 

Throughout human history, soil has been repeatedly ruined and destroyed.  This is highly dangerous to a civilization, because soil is an essential resource that is useful in many ways.  Some societies have even collapsed due to mistreatment of their soil resources, so modern people must be cautious to avoid a similar fate.

Soil is composed of both inorganic materials and living organisms.  It provides the basis for life, giving nutrients to plants, which allow animal life to exist.

Soil is also used extensively in human production.  It contains natural fibers, and produces lumber and crops that people consume.

Crops are usually grown on mollisols, grassland soils.  Soils found in other places, such as tropical rain forests, usually lack the nutrients necessary to support the growing of crops.

When bedrock breaks down, it is converted into soil.  Some soil also comes from sediments that are left by the wind, a volcano, glaciers, or other sources.

Soil resources can be lost through erosion.  Wind and rain can uplift soil that is made easy to transport by various human processes and take it somewhere else.

Soil conservation is being practiced in various forms in many places around the world.  Conservation efforts aim to prevent erosion and maintain life-giving nutrients that are found in the soil.  In the future, soil will have to be preserved if food is to be continued to be grown.

    Many of the developing regions of the world are rapidly losing their forested areas.  In order to develop and industrialize, these areas have had to sell their natural resources, including forests.

CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons, are the primary cause of ozone depletion.  When industrial processes release these chemicals, they rise into the stratosphere and degrade the ozone.

Acid rain, smog and poor air quality have been the result of air pollution.  Both industrial operations and automobiles have released gigantic amounts of emissions that have intensified these problems.

Deforestation and the logging industry have destroyed many tropical rain forests around the world.  This has destroyed many natural habitats, and the plants and animals native to the areas.

Environmentalists are working hard to combat environmental degradation.  There are countless organizations located all over the world that are dedicated to preventing the global destruction of the environment.

AFRICA

After Asia, Africa is the world’s second largest continent.  From the Sahara Desert to the Nile River, Africa contains many unique environmental features.

Liga Studenților Basarabeni din România, împreună cu asociațiile locale pe care le reprezintă, a lansat recent campania națională de colectare a cărților Trimite o carte peste Prut! În acest context, Liga Studenților Basarabeni din București își propune să coordoneze campania la nivel de capitală și lansează un apel către toți cei care sunt dispuși să ne sprijine în desfășurarea acesteia. Sunt binevenite cărţi de literatură românească şi universală, poezie, enciclopedii, atlasuri, carte şcolară, precum și literatură istorică (cu mențiunea că programul orelor de istorie a românilor din România nu coincide cu cel din Basarabia, manualele fiind diferite).
Campania are ca beneficiari bibliotecile și şcolile din satele Republicii Moldova, inclusiv din regiunea transnistreană. Aceste biblioteci au fost selectate pe criteriul lipsei de cărţi în limba română şi a numărului de copii înscrişi. LSBB se angajează să asigure inventarierea, împachetarea şi transportul cărţilor.
Cărțile vor fi donate în mai multe etape, având în vedere că realizarea campaniei depinde inclusiv de formalitățile legate de trecerea frontierei, de transportarea cărților, precum și de alți factori greu de prevăzut.
