Now this whole thing on the Moleskine is quite a phenomenon. Demands have been higher, relatively increasing the price.

Seriously, would you need an organizer / notebook that costs more than a 1000 bucks?

As much as I may have gotten my perpetual planner for more than that, it came with books (defensive-mode on).

As I previously posted, I got myself a Scribe planner which costs a quarter than that of a Moleskine and I was happy.

Of course it’s premature, since if I actually looked further, I would’ve found the Green Apple.

This is a Moleskine look-alike. It may not have the oilcloth, but its cover is a thicker leatherette. The ribbon bookmark is almost the same but the elastic that keeps the notebook shut is relatively thinner. The best part, it costs 169 bucks in retail (half less than the Scribe pad).

This Sunday will be the first Sunday of Advent, so I’ve been having a bit of a look at the lectionary readings. Jeremiah 33 talks about how Israel is pretty much doomed because of their evil. But then it goes on to talk about God causing ‘a righteous branch to spring up for David’. So I have been thinking about that a bit.

I’ve been thinking this afternoon how the scriptures often use images of plants struggling to live. Ezekiel writes about a vine trying to grow in Babylon. Jesus talks about a farmer planting seeds in difficult places. And Jeremiah talks about deceased dynasty growing a new shoot.
Just before I walked past one of the construction sites in our neighbourhood, where the developers have cut down a number of trees so that they can have space to build. I noticed that one of the tree stumps was growing shoots, which were sticking out from under the temporary barrier around the site.

“I hate balloons,” I said to no one in particular as I walked down the hill towards the store, I had walked past a house for sale that had balloons tied to the for sale sign, as I went past a gust of wind caught the balloons and they bopped me on the noggin.

In fact, every time I pass a for sale sign or car lot that has balloons strung along the front to attract attention I get assaulted by the latex bar stewards. Makes me feel like pulling out some sharp implement and popping the multi-colored attackers.

After walking past the sign and getting bopped I composed this post in my head prior to noting it down in my Moleskine notebook, then I came upon another for sale sign that had balloons attached. But on this one all the balloons had been deflated and hanging down on their strings.

Ha! take that.

Maybe someone who felt like I did had walked past and defended themselves with a pointy object. maybe there was a latex balloon serial-killer on the loose. Maybe he needed an assistant.

Is it obvious I am operating on little sleep and buckets of caffeine?

It’s been years since I’ve used paint, but I couldn’t let my new acrylics go to waste. Portrait of my dad, paint skills definitely need more work. Did this on the tram on Friday night:

I’d been doing a Bible walk with some young punks from Warragul Anglican Church, and I mentioned on Twitter that there was a little bird in the sanctuary and a big man in the laneway. Marcus asked whether the big man was ‘The one who is coming who is stronger…’

Saturday night Mehrin and I went out to visit Ray and Ben at their new house. On the way there we walked past a fish and chip shop, and there was a little old lady staring out at us through a little crack in the side gate, next to the shop:

So that is some of what I have been drawing in my notebook recently.

Second and final drawing of my short sketchcrawl yesterday, which was interspersed with getting hair cut, shopping for Christmas cards, and generally cycling round thinking, ‘oh I’ve drawn everything in Davis, I’m so uninspired’. So I stopped for lunch. A beer (New Belgium 2 Below, if you’re ordering), and a mountain of garlic fries.

But I came in here – Uncle Vito’s, on the corner of E and 2nd – to draw the bar, so draw it I did. You can see me in the mirror there. There’s a bit of beermat philosophy that was going through my head as I made my way through the garlic fries surplus.

This place is fairly new, and occupies the space formerly tken by the Davis Driving School, and a little (cheap and not particularly good) chinese place called, I kid you not, Wok and Roll. They didn’t do garlic fries, but I can’t say they didn’t do stomachaches.

Today was the day of the 25th Worldwide Sketchcrawl – in fact it was also the fifth anniversary of the first one. I was pretty busy today, getting my hair cut and other important stuff, so wasn’t able to really take part, but I brought my sketching stuff with me (as always) downtown and managed to knock out a couple (by that I mean, draw two pictures, not actually knock out some poor unsuspecting couple). The second one was done while having a beer and some garlic fries (some! it was a mountain, I barely ate half). The fries made me feel sick, but they were tasty. I haven’t added colour to that one yet so you’ll not see it here just yet. I didn’t manage to meet with the main Davis sketchcrawl (I forgot to check the forum before I left). It was cold today, cold and bright. My micron pens were feeling it. I managed to draw this one (very typical pete, tree coming out of the top of the frame) in a quiet courtyard on C street, behind the Davis Community Church and away from the throng of the Davis Farmer’s Market. What a wimp, I thought to myself. How can I be cold? People all over the world are sketching in colder and probably wetter places than me. But I made sure my next sketch was indoors. Am I becoming a Californian?

listening to All is full of Love (live) by Bjork

7.45 di mattina.
L’autobus è pieno
Gente che va a scuola, gente che va a lavoro.
Tutto è ancora calmo e silenzioso, tutti vogliono ancora riposare.
Forse dovrebbero solo imparare a guardare i colori e sorridere.
Forse è che spero sempre, in tutto.
E nonostante molte cose siano irrealizzabili, esse mi rendono felice.

it’s all around you

It has been quite a few months since my last post. With the birth of my daughter, there are simply not enough hours in the day or energy to accomplish even the most mundane task, let alone publish a post. In that time, I have been recording those infant milestones, week by week in my Moleskine. So I thought I would share this tool I recently discovered on molskine.com, MSK wizard. MSK wizard has different templates, where you can upload digital files and print them to your Moleskine. Although it has it’s limitations, like the max image file size is 50KB and the image size is a 115px. It’s free, easy and can come in handy for printing images and other reference material for sketching and inspiration. -K

He stands outside Chipotle and Peet’s Coffee n E Street, busking on his twelve-string at lunchtimes when I am there, sounding like Dylan, Nelson, Haggard; his music is very nice. He has one of those harmonicas you can play while guitaring; no cymbals at the knees though. Very distinctive with his long white hair, moustache, sunglasses; he has a long feather in his hat. One of the characters of Davis. He was singing a song about watercoloured wine while I was drawing this, munching on my burrito. It was cold outside; November is really kicking in. The Fall Colours have just exploded all around us, the trees have suddenly turned the colour of flames, and there’s no way I’ll keep up with them.

Vamos a elas.

Sacou o estilo do sorteio?

bjos!

As I’ve mentioned before, I love moleskines, the pocket sized, with lines. But where I used to

As I’ve mentioned before, I love moleskines, the pocket sized, with lines.

But where I used to use them only as a capture device, I have finally branched out. I have sort of suddenly started using the large soft-cover moleskines for writing. By hand. Which is tricky, since within minutes my hand starts cramping and within hours I can no longer read or remember some of what I’ve written.

Yeah, sounds like a good plan, huh?

["Writing content?" you ask. "Is she finally getting around to a bit of the promised writing content? And this? Is it?"]

Oh, hush. I’m getting there.

Sometimes when the muse is playing hard to get, I find that I can go to the local Tex Mex cafe and sit with a bowl of chips and salsa and pull out my favorite fountain pen (except I have the extra fine nib) and–okay, sometimes, the iPod, too, with music that fits my story and mood–and somehow, words come there that weren’t coming at home.

Maybe because they don’t count. They’re unofficial. They aren’t even allowed to show up in the manuscript yet, not even in the rough draft. They are just messy words in ink that might even smear, that might not ever make it to prime time…

And they show up.

It’s odd how that happens.

And more often than not, those words go home with me and get typed into the manuscript and wow, they are good. Good enough to keep in that rough draft, anyway. Sometimes several hundred of them.

Do you realize how many years I’ve been writing? And never, ever wrote by hand? And suddenly, I’m doing it with regularity?

I guess you can teach a drinking aged Pooks new tricks, huh? (Did you really think I was going to use the o-word there?)

And to my delight, you can now get Noodler’s Black Waterproof Fountain Pen Ink from Amazon. Free shipping (since I also have Amazon Prime, that is very cool, because I can order it and not pay shipping, which I used to have to do when I ordered it elsewhere. Plus, I’ve never bought this black before, and was actually kind of wanting Hunter’s Green, but I am pretty sure black is the only waterproof ink, and I’ve found that when I use highlighters (have I mentioned that I love highlighters?) they sometimes smear the ink and, yeah, I decided my next bottle of ink would be waterproof, because if I can’t read my own writing when it’s not smeared? Smearing is not an option.

And while we’re at it, I stumbled across another cool site that pays attention to notebooks and such.

Notebookstories.

Check it out.
