I morse packades ryggsäcken för en heldag på hundutställning. Kaffe kokades, mackor breddes, hundmat lades i lämplig burk, hundgodis (dvs Mamma Scans köttbullar) lades i en annan lämplig burk och vatten fylldes på i vattenflaskan. Nummerlapp och vaccinationsintyg packades ner samt koppel, leksak, handduk och bajspåsar. Det är inte lätt när man ska åka på sin första hundutställning och inte har en aning om vad man behöver. Kattutställningar har jag ju varit på en himla massa gånger både som utställare och arrangör så där vet jag verkligen vad som behövs men nu hade jag ingen aning.

Vid halv tio hade jag lämnat av Jonathan hos mormor och kunde åka till utställningen med Molle, vilken tur att jag kom ihåg att ta med honom! Efter incheckning och köp av utställningskatalog satte vi oss vid ringen där vår bedömning skulle ske. Efter lite koll i katalogen och beräkning av tid kom jag fram till att vi säkert skulle behöva vänta i över två timmar innan det var vår tur. Det var hundar överallt och det blev ganska stressande för Molle. Till slut valde jag att sätta honom i hans bur i bilen. Jag gick tillbaka in i hallen och satte mig för att kolla på bedömningarna och fika lite. Molle sov i bilen i 1,5 timma och sedan fick han komma ut och kika runt lite igen. Mina första beräkningar angående när han skulle upp för bedömning visade sig vara helt felaktiga och vi väntade till halv två innan det var vår tur. Då hade mormor, Jonathan och min faster hunnit komma dit också för att titta.

Satt vid ringen precis innan Molle skulle upp och helt plötsligt blev det vår tur. Hunden innan oss dök inte upp så det blev lite panikartat. Av med jackan och fram med en köttbulle. Molle såg burken med köttbullar och kastade sig ner med nosen i den så jag fick nästan släpa in honom i ringen. Det första domaren gjorde var att känna på hans kulor. Ooops, bara en testikel på plats. Domaren kunde känna den andra men den satt långt uppe. Han trodde att den kanske skulle flytta sig och lägga sig på plats men han var ju ingen veterinär som han själv sa. Iaf fick vi springa några varv runt i ringen och Molle sprang på så fint. Sedan skrevs kritiken och vi fick stå uppställda så gott det gick under tiden.

Molle fick en bra bedömning men gick tyvärr inte vidare pga av att båda testiklarna inte fanns på plats. Efter en heldag på utställning var det bara att packa ihop och åka hem. Har inte ens tänkt på att kolla kulorna på honom, inte mer än att jag sa till sambon för någon dag sedan att jag tyckte att hans pung såg liten ut. Hundens alltså, inte sambons.. ;o)

Vi får väl kontakta en veterinär och höra vad utlåtandet blir. Jag skulle gärna ställa ut honom någon mer gång, på en officiell utställning, denna var ju bara inofficiell.

Trötta och nöjda kom vi till slut hem och jag kunde konstatera att oavsett hur det gick på utställningen så är det ändå samma hund som jag åkte dit med, nämligen världens vackraste hund!

The heat broke a bit today; we went to the Zoo and didn’t exactly melt, but we struggled a bit with the wills today. I’ve become inured to the fact that we’re not going to be using the backpack or stroller much — not when the arms are so willing to hoist her up in the air, not when it’s so easy to reject the other conveyances with the rigid back arch to slip out of our grasp. Therefore, both arms need to be free when we head out; I’ve tried using a shoulder bag, but I gave up on that a few weeks ago when one of the straps broke and dumped one of my cameras on the ground.

You have a choice between what you get to hold, then; I did bring along a fair amount of gear today, but didn’t have much opportunity to pull the camera out of its holster or even swap lenses (recall that you will always have the wrong lens on the camera). I did dress like a freak, too — probably twenty pounds of gear, between diapers, water, lenses, and cameras distributed in the various pockets of a MOLLE LBV; that worked well in holding all my gear accessibly, not that I did much accessing. My hands were usually full with child — holding, lifting, and twirling — and to be honest, I’m not sure I missed any opportunities today.

In addition to the padded carry handle, it features a comfortable shoulder strap, which is especially nice because with all the storage space, it’s difficult to not put as much as you can fit.

The front of the bag sports three MOLLE compatible pouches, allowing for better gear customization.

The two end pouches are identical, featuring a thin divider to help keep gear separated.

The center pouch is around double the size of the side pouches, however it’s a single compartment.

The MOLLE webbing that holds the pouches on is quite a bit wider than you might find on a plate carrier or similar.  It’s not really an issue though, even loaded down the pouches are pretty secure.  It does, however, make it much easier to lace.

Inside the top compartment, you find two more pockets opening to the center.  I usually throw my pistol or extra batteries in here, but you can really pack this thing full.

Two velcro straps secure the rifles in place in the padded main compartment.

Comfort:

Once everything is adjusted to you’re body type, this vest is moderately comfortable.  Adjustments to the shoulder straps, and the straps at the sides make it fairly easy to fit.

Quality:

Mine has stood up to about a year of regular play so far.  One thing to note;  some of the sections of webbing aren’t as uniform as they could be, limiting the customizability of this rig.

Functionality:

For the price it works great, initially I had it set up with the mag pouches upright, but with my three point, it can be difficult to get mags out.  It also sits a little high, so to retrive mags I’ve got my elbows in the air trying to reach down from higher than is comfortable, not to mention with the triple pouch I have on the back, right-side up just isn’t feasable.  It has plenty of space though for customization, and a few storage options that lend to it’s value.  It features two utility pouches on the inside of the cummerbund, and a map pouch in the front which I’ve used to hold a sidearm once or twice.

Score:  4/5   A good buy, but the uneven sections of webbing might be a problem for some.

Så här avslappnat låg Molle och sov för någon vecka sedan.

Precis sådär trött är jag idag och har varit det sedan jag gick upp i princip men inte sjutton kan jag lägga mig på det där sättet bara för att jag är trött…

Första skoldagen, och även första fyllan, i småstaden avklarad. Kvällen inleddes med rosévin vid vattnet, där de nya ettorna sprang omkring och lekte nolle-lekar. Det var kul att se dem, även om vi inte direkt interagerade, utan mest satt där som åskådare. Sent omsider, när rosén och även en hel del annat var slut, bar det av till studentbaren. Ettor överallt, och en sjukt het norrman som jag tillbringade större delen av kvällen med. Framåt natten kom dock ett gammalt one-night-stand och numera polare in på krogen. Vi kan kalla honom Molle. Han hade tydligen gjort slut med sin flickvän och ville återuppliva gamla minnen. I fyllan och villan tyckte jag det var en bra idé att följa med honom upp på vinden.

Sagt och gjort. Väl där ville han ligga, men det kändes lite väl skabbigt för mig. Så vad gör jag? Suger av honom i trappan. Som om det skulle vara mindre skabbigt. Och han kommer aldrig heller, utan jag får hålla på en halv evighet, medan han höll ett stadigt tag om mitt hår. Till slut tröttnade jag, varpå han sa nåt i stil med “Jag måste fan knulla dig sen, då får du fan inte banga som där uppe.” Vi gick ner, och blev tack och lov bara sedda på nervägen av en person, och honom kände vi inte. Där nere hade krogen nästan tömts helt, då klockan började vandra in på småtimmarna.

Vi väntade ut stängningsdags, vilket inte är så sent i småstan, och mitt kompisgäng samlades utanför. Molle tog mig i handen och pussade mig framför alla, vilket är något han aldrig gjort förut. Vi knallade hem mot mig, och så fort vi har kommit innanför dörren lyfter han upp mig, säger “Det är sängdags” och bär mig in till sängen, där han slänger ner mig och tar av mig kläderna. Pang på rödbetan på en gång, tack och lov med kondom (bright moment av mig! yes!). Efter typ fem minuter slutar han, frågar om jag kommit än och när jag svarar nej går han ner på mig tills jag gör det. Jag har nog aldrig blivit slickad så hårt förut. Bra, dock.

Sen trycker han in kuken i munnen på mig igen och vi kör tills jag inte orkar längre igen. Vi ligger igen, och när han fortfarande inte har kommit efter ett bra tag suger jag av honom en tredje gång tills det bara inte går mer. Jag har aldrig vart med om maken till svårkommen. Till slut runkar han tills det går det för honom, över mitt ansikte, vilket jag inte alls uppskattar. Dock var det rätt skönt att få det överstökat, om jag ska vara ärlig.

Till skillnad från förra gången vi låg, var han väldigt mysig efteråt. Hämtade papper, slängde kondomerna i papperskorgen (och att folk i allmänhet, som jag har uppfattat det, bara slänger dem på golvet har jag svårt att förstå!) och fixade iordning sängen så att vi kunde sova. Han till och med frågade om han fick sova över, eller om han skulle gå. Sen sov vi med varandra hela natten. Hur mysigt som helst. Han försökte börja ligga ett par gånger till under natten, och på morgonen, men jag orkade inte. Jättefin på morgonen, pussade mig hejdå flera gånger, och såg ut som att han inte ville gå.

Jag kan inte låta bli att tycka att det är synd att han flyttar i helgen. Inte bara blir jag av med en av mina få polare här, men det hade kanske kunnat vara fint med en fortsättning på det här. Fast då skulle jag behöva snacka med honom lite om sexet. Lite väl våldsamt för min smak.

Till min stora förvåning var det inte allmänt känt vad som hade hänt när jag kom till skolan imorse. Ovanligt för den här stan. Bara en av mina polare hade märkt nåt, och det är den enda som jag litar på inte skulle säga nåt även om jag inte ber honom om det. Konstigt, med tanke på vårt offentliga pussande och att vi väldigt tydligt lämnade alla utanför krogen och gick tillsammans åt mitt håll. Men det känns bra.

Consider the dilemma of camera bags — if you want a camera on you, either get one that’s convenient (read that as small or built in to something you always have with you — phone, keys, wallet, hat) or you’ll need some way of carrying it hands-free.  The simplest solution is a pocketable camera, but the ones that fit well are generally compromised in some other way, so let’s say you get a neck strap, next.  I used to carry all my cameras on a neck strap, until I started to get extra lenses (and the lesson here is that either you have a zoom that does everything and is therefore compromised, or you have the wrong lens on your camera*) — where do you put the lenses?  I made do for years after that — large jacket pockets, satchels, begging theVet to carry extra-large purses — until finally I broke down and got a camera backpack.  Great way to carry things, especially with a waistbelt to shift the load from shoulders to hips; lousy way to work, though, until evolution blesses us with octopus arms and eyes on stalks — once it’s in the backpack, the backpack has to come off to get at it.

The flip side of the backpack is the shoulder bag; my dad has one and I suspect that it, along with the embroidered strap, was de rigeur for photographers who started in the 70s — you can work out of it, but it will give you pains by the end of the day, whether the standard mini-duffle or satchel/messenger style.  It is, however, my chosen way of working for now — remember to get one with a grip handle that you can use to lift the bag with the lid open and unfastened, or else you end up dumping all your cameras in front of Uncle Fred and looking like a donkey.

There are better ways of working and carrying cameras; I used to have an Army surplus jacket that had enormous pockets all over and that was just about perfect except that I looked impoverished whenever I went out in it, at least until the glass started coming out.  Vests and web gear, whether repurposed fishing, ALICE/MOLLE military surplus, or actual photographer fall into the same concern — it’s shallow, but you end up looking far more hardcore and ignorant all at once.  Hardcore for recognizing that it’s probably the most efficient way of hauling and using gear, ignorant for making your entire family embarrassed to be seen with you.  That said, I do have a MOLLE vest and belt hanging up in my closet waiting to be laden with pouches, and I need to be able to tote figgy around, what with her refusing stroller and backpack lately.

For those of you looking for concrete examples and brands, I own two brands and am contemplating welcoming a third into my life.  The first real photo bag I bought was a LowePro MiniTrekker; despite the Mini appellation, it swallows an enormous amount of stuff, it’s comfortable, and it hasn’t seen daylight in, hmm, 12 years or so?  It ends up being a question of access, and when my brother bought me a Domke F-2, I was all over it — and still use it to tote things around, as it’s rugged yet soft, but quickly grew to realize that it’s so big that you can load it down with enough equipment to give you a hernia (which didn’t, of course, stop me from getting two more Domkes — a F-804 I used for grad school (and which still has a beloved Olympus 35RC nestled deep within) and a F-1X, initially for the Kodak/Nikon boat anchor DCS 6×0 dSLRs, but lately retired because I keep forgetting to fasten the lid and dump equipment instead — that and the navy color attracts light-colored fur like nothing you’d believe.  If it wasn’t for the lack of (back/shoulder) comfort I’m pretty sure I’d still be working out of a Domke, but now I’m thinking web gear …

There are so many types of vests on the market to buy these days. From Ciras to Molle you can find just about anything you want.
Personally I recommend Molle because of the complete freedom of customization. You can buy it in many shapes and colors. Multicam seems to be the big hit in modern camouflage technology, but the price tag is pretty hefty.
I have searched for many hours for the best vest you can buy for the money. I bought a Molle multicam vest for $60 with pouches! The only thing that is wrong with it is the fact that it isn’t “Cry Precision.” It is actually a chinese clone that looks close enough to the real thing for no one to notice. Of all places, guess where I bought it? Ebay of course. It has served me well in my Airsoft battles. It is double stitched with a fairly high denier fabric. If you want a vest that will last your entire life, this one probably won’t cut it, but it can take a serious beating without malfunctions. The vest comes with a QD- quick detach- pull system that allows the vest to be ripped off with speed. Unfortunately they do not make the same vest anymore, but the good news is that I have found a site where there is quite of a selection of quality gear for cheap. Be aware of some of the multicam though because it does not look anything like the real thing. Most of the vests come with all the bells and whistles your heart could desire. Here is the link

Det finns andra saker man inte får missa på Kullahalvön i Skåne, förutom “Flickorna Lundgren på skäret” som jag skrev om i förra inlägget. Fortsätter man längre ut på halvön så kommer man till den lilla byn Mölle och dess hamn. Vidare ännu längre ut och uppåt så kommer det vackra och dramatiska fritidsområdet Kullaberg med vackra bokskogar och längst ut Kullens fyr. Mer information hittar ni här.

Rekommenderar starkt ett besök i detta område om ni är i närheten, men ha inte ont om tid utan passa på att vandra runt länge i den vackra naturen.

Är ju ett måste att besöka om man befinner sig på Kullahalvön i nordvästra Skåne. På vägen mellan Jonstorp och Arild svänger man ner mot havet och där nere i lummigheten ligger caféet Flickorna Lundgren. När man har svängt ner så kommer det först en skylt om Rut på skäret, men det är alltså inte samma ställe som jag skriver om här.

På den fina och informativa hemsidan hittar ni massor av fakta.

Kom ihåg stora plånboken och ät med andakt. Miljön är helt strålande vacker så jag tror att det är medräknat i priset.

The MOdular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment ruck sack is the latest-generation Army equipment designed to carry the necessary items soldiers need to carry into battle on their person.  It is characterized by the ACU digital camoflauge pattern and the the use of PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System) webbing to attach additional pouches/equipment.  As you’ll see on my MOLLE ruck below, my nametape has been sewn on as well as two rectangular “cat eyes”, which are pieces of glint tape that capture and generate light at night so you can see the soldier in front of you and find your rucksack in case you have to move out quickly.  

The small triangular pouch in the center of the ruck is the E-Tool (entrenching tool) carrying case and E-Tool itself, which is used by soldiers to dig hasty fighting positions, cut branches and can even be used as a defensive weapon if need be.

Depending on the packing list and the amount of time to be spent in the field, the MOLLE ruck sack can weight anywhere between 35-80 lbs.  Combine that with 12-20 pounds of gear on the MOLLE FLC (Fighting Load Carrier) shown below, and the MOLLE Interceptor Body Armor with ESAPI plates, which is an extra 25 lbs, and a soldier could be carrying over 100 lbs into combat.

M.O.L.L.E, or Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment is the term used to describe the current issue load-bearing equipment and backpack. This system is extremely versatile because of P.A.L.S. (Pouch Attachment Ladder System), rugged nylon attached in rows by heavy stitching at regularly spaced intervals. Although the term M.O.L.L.E. is technically owned by a particular manufacturer, any compatible system is referred to as M.O.L.L.E. Since the original contract was awarded in October 2001, there are several contractors making these for the government. In fact, there are already a few alternative attachment systems used to help soldiers change the pack’s gear configuration: the standard Natick snap, a webbing and polyethylene sandwich which is interwoven through the P.A.L.S. straps and secured by a snap, is extremely secure but slow to change. Faster alternatives are now offered by several after-market manufacturers.

The number of manufacturers producing military or made-to-mil-spec M.O.L.L.E. compatible gear is a testament to the system’s widespread use and acceptance among U.S. soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the globe. The original Generation I backpack system had a ball and socket design which would, at times, fail and cause injury. It also did poorly in drop tests that simulate use by Airborne soldiers. The improved Generation II version is much stronger and even lighter than the Gen I and far stronger than the old aluminum frame A.L.I.C.E.(All-purpose, Lightweight, Individual Carry Equipment) packs. The pack holds a larger volume load and carries it higher and closer to the soldier’s center of gravity, giving the wearer greater comfort and stability. The only drawback to the M.O.L.L.E. pack is its size for normal operations. Because of this, the 3 Day Assault Pack, M.O.L.L.E. and Hydration system compatible, is extremely useful and popular. It provides a comfortable, easy-to-maneuver pack that certainly can carry enough to sustain a modern soldier for 3 days plus! The addition of P.A.L.S. webbing makes it highly adaptable. This, along with the huge expense of the full-size M.O.L.L.E. pack is why we have chosen to build our M.O.L.L.E. gear line around the Assault Pack.

The standard M.O.L.L.E. vest, (F.L.C. or Fighting Load Carrier) provides a broader, more comfortable area of support on the body than the old A.L.I.C.E. suspenders and a pistol belt, is far more adaptable and capable of carrying extra water, ammo, or whatever extra gear is required. During the first Gulf War in 1991 the US Army discovered they had a problem.  Their traditional backpack, the ALICE pack, which had been used since the Viet Nam war, was no longer cutting it.  That pack just wasn’t designed for desert warfare conditions and they found it to be unadaptable.

Starting in 1994 the army started developing a new carrying system for troops.  Their goal was to make a more durable system that was more comfortable and more moduler.  They undertook biomedical studies to figure out the most efficient way for loads to be carried.  These tests were dependent on human performance, energy costs, preferred walking postures, volume configurations and load center implications.

Then end result was the Modular Lightweight Load Carrying Equipment, or MOLLE for short.

So what makes the MOLLE system so unique?  First, is that the MOLLE system is two separate components: a vest and a pack.

The MOLLE vest doesn’t have any any hooks or metal parts.  It uses a nylon “mesh”.  It looks like a bunch of different loops.  These allow soldiers to hook removable pouches and equipment at various locations, wherever is comfortable for them.  This flexablility makes the vest comfigurable for different missions and based on the role a soldier will play.  The vest is also designed to fid individual body sizes, making it more comfortable to wear.

The MOLLE pack part has been upgraded even since it was released.  Field use  lead to the pack frame being strengthened and the zippers being made more durable.  Additionally the pack straps were made longer to accommodate body armor.

All in all, the new MOLLE system is turning out to work quite well for the Army, with most military personel being deployed with the new system.
