Haven’t done one of these in a while. As usual I can’t sleep– and the hits keep on coming. I survived my first round of layoffs at work, and had my hours cut. I’m probably going to be applying for food stamps sometime this week, as I qualify and I’ve decided to move past my pride, and accept things for what they are. I foresee eating better than I do now in my future and becoming somewhat of a food stamp foodie.

So there’s that. Here’s what I’ve been listening to the last month and a half or so. Rest assured there will be an October, and a Halloween music dump to follow soon.

There’s been a lot of 90s nostalgia resurfacing in my music lately. Followed by more slower, psych-rock/metal. Judging by my taste in music, you’d think I was a huge pothead– but no — I just happen to really like a lot of downtempo stoner rock. I need constant white noise that I can headbang softly too, and that just happens to fit the bill. Also my taste in metal is doing its usual seasonal shift where I transition from really yelpy, heavy on the falsettos type of metal to sludge and then it hits full on black metal during winter time.

TP To Sassy City !

Último domingo de octubre. Ya hemos llegado. Tenemos más de medio otoño consumido y por fin parece que empieza a desaparecer el verano, en especial en la ciudad en la que estoy pasando el fin de semana en compañía de un buen puñado de amigos: Santander.

Por unos u otros motivos, éste ha sido un fin de semana festivo. En Alcoy se conmemora el Mig Any, es decir, que falta exactamente medio año para las fiestas de moros y cristianos. Un año más me lo he perdido, pero seguro que habrá sido tan divertido, intenso y agotador como siempre. En Santander me he reunido con amigos venidos de las cuatro esquinas de la piel de toro para celebrar el cumpleaños de Cárol y sé de buena tinta que en Valencia no han estado perdiendo precisamente el tiempo, entre conciertos y escapadas nocturnas.

Mañana, lunes 26, será un gran día por muchos motivos. Ha llegado el momento de tomar decisiones, así que tocará ponerse la gorra de pensar, atar los machos y arrear. Pero hoy no, hoy es domingo y sigue siendo un día festivo.

Qué cojones, también hay que disfrutar, total la vida son cuatro días, y siempre habrá tiempo para hablar de tasas de conversión, CPM sí o no, megas y tasas de transferencia. Por eso, la canción del domingo 25 de octubre de 2009 es Sing it back, de Moloko.

Seguro que si a cualquiera de los que rondáis por arriba o por abajo la treintena os pregunto con qué asociáis Sing it Back, me responderéis lo mismo: una buena juerga. La canción apareció en el album “I’m not a doctor” en 1998 (OMG, hace más de 11 años) y enseguida arrasó en cualquier pista de baile, de las que yo suelo huir como de la peste. Sinceramente me sorprende que esta canción se haya convertido en un clásico de mis recopilatorios, pero supongo que es debido a que el paso de los años la ha tratado bastante bien.

Para la ocasión he elegido una versión en directo relativamente reciente y algo más madura; dicho esto sin perjuicio de la traca final, cuando Roisin Murphy se encajona dentro del órgano y sigue cantando mientras mueve las piernas entre estertores. Lo dicho, es una canción desenfadada, sin pretensiones, que a buen seguro te traerá recuerdos de todo tipo. Con ellos te dejo hasta la próxima semana, no sin antes desear que acabes de pasar un feliz domingo.

it’s rainy. it’s cold. and the only thing that speaks to me is moloko.

the older i get the less interested and the less patience i have with people who don’t say much.

i’m currently into the ‘addicted’ category when it comes to watching ‘the real housewives of atlanta.’ and for all the wrong reasons. what i do like about it is that even though it is the proverbial reality show…thriving on drama (but what art/pop culture doesn’t?) i’m drawn in to how awesome their make-up looks and i loooove their clothes. lol.

also have a favorite, the awesomely talented kandi burruss, from the group xscape who (in my opinion) is the hinge of the show…also keeps me watching. she helped write tlc’s huge hit ‘no scrubs.’ wrote destiny’s child ‘bug a boo.’ wrote ‘there you go,’ one of pink’s first tracks and ‘can’t take me home.’ has written for mariah carey, alicia keys, boyz II men, nsync…usher, whitney houston. the girl is ill and interesting…it’s interesting to watch her cool…if you will.

a friend of mine is leaving. we had dinner yesterday. she’s leaving for thailand and has a fierce determination about actually changing lives, making a positive impact. her passion is exhilarating. and her maturity refreshing.

a lot of people are still riding this huge wave of hateration about kanye and taylor swift. you know what? kanye was actually right. he told taylor he was happy for her…and taylor’s dope. that is one talented girl…nothing nominated for that category surpassed beyonce’s ’single ladies.’ i do hate kanye did what he did…i believe he didn’t suspect the fallout. but i also have a great deal of suspicion…how did kanye get on stage? who let him? if you saw anybody coming up on stage after you have won your award…would you give them your mic? i wonder to what degree this was…not planned but…encouraged? maybe not to any degree…i’m just saying. if you ever win an award…someone’s coming on stage and is not apart of your career…don’t give them the mic. i still hate he did it…i wish he hadn’t…but i haven’t lost my love for him either. i have a much bigger disdain to those who are protesting health care reform. i have an even bigger disdain for rush limbaugh and glenn beck. let’s not get sidetracked here…nobody died when kanye ______? can’t think of anything? me, neither.

First of all: welcome to this blog! Secondly I would like to thank you for taking the time reading these pages. I want to post mainly in English and Dutch, but I’ll also try to translate to both languages so that everyone can capture these short bursts of my mind.

I hope you enjoy the first short story I posted hereunder. We spent that night at the summer version of the Bitef Art Cafe. There was a pretty cool live band playing covers of songs by Eagle Eye Cherry, Michael Jackson, Moloko and even, as a plus, the more familiar House hits and more. All performed brilliantly.

Nú fyrir skemmstu kom út smáskífa með laginu “You got the love” í flutningi Florence + the Machine (ásamt ófáum endurhljóðblöndunum) og hefur skífan gert góða hluti um víðan völl. Eins og flestir vita er þetta lag aðeins endurflutningur af lagi sem var upprunarlega samið af Candi Staton.

Það sem er sérstakt við “You got the love” er að remix af laginu er þekktara heldur en upprunarlega lagið. Það kemur stundum fyrir að remix verðir vinsælli en orginalarnir og geta ástæður þess verið margar, t.d. þegar remixarinn er frægari heldur en artistinn sem gerir lagið, þegar upphaflega lagið er komið til ára sinna eða þegar remixið er einfaldlega betra. Í þessu Jútjúb mixteipi verður farið yfir “You Got the love” í ýmsum útgáfum.

“You got the love” er soul lag frá 1986. Óhætt er að  fullyrða að lagið er rosalega funky ,gott groove, syntharnir klassískir og lagið eðall. Þrátt fyrir gæði þessa lags þekkja mun fleirri acapelluna í annari útgáfu, það er í einhvers konar sambræðingi við næsta lag.

Eins og áður hefur komið fram á Dansidans er Frankie Knuckles talinn vera  einn af upphafsmönnum house tónlistar. “Your love” sem er frá 1989 er líklega eitt af vinsælustu lögum kappans  og eitt af mínum uppháhalds lögum. Uppbyggingin í byrjun lagsins er stórskemmtileg og synthalínan algjör classic. En árið 1991 kom út annað lag eða bootleg sem ég held að hafi haft stór áhrif á vinsældir lagsins.

Þessi sambræðingur af fyrrnefndum lögum er vægast sagt algjör bomba á dansgólfinu og gerði bæði lögin ódauðleg. Ég tel að þessi útgáfa sé mun meira spiluð heldur en báðir orginalarnir sem eru notaðir. Þessi útgáfa er jafnvel svo þekkt að fólk heldur að hinar útgáfurnar séu endurhljóðblandanir en ekki öfugt. Hef heyrt sögur af hörkurifrildum milli Gunna Ewoks og hóp af stelpum um hvort lagið væri nú betra. Hvað finnst ykkur? Annars er forvitnilegt að lesa um tilurð þessa lags á Wikipedia.

Hér er svo önnur útgáfa sem líka er skrifuð á The Source,  lakara lag að mínu mati, minnir mig  þar að auki alltaf á “Clubbed To Death“… Kannski þekktast fyrir að hljóma undir lokaatriðinu í Sex and the City (DansiDans er metrósexúal og mikil aðdáandi Beðmálanna).

Hér er þetta svo farið að verða virkilega póst-módernískt, remix af coveri af mashuppi, skemmtileg pæling! Jamie XX úr hipster hljómsveitinni vélar um endurhljóðblöndun af trendý kollega sínum Florence & The Machine. Garage bræðingur einhvers konar og vókalaleikfimi, lag sem er heldur betur að slá í gegn þessa dagana, enda frábært lag (slær seint upphaflega lagið út, eða þið vitið, remixið af upphaflega laginu sem var sett saman úr tveim öðrum lögum eða þannig…)

So, I was trying to build a short blog post around microphones and how female vocalists use them both as props and instruments. The trouble is, I couldn’t find enough interesting examples to go with Kylie Minogue’s rad-if-problematic, potentially Damien Hirst-inspired, diamond-encrusted skull microphone from her “2 Hearts” music video. If you can help me compile a list of artists who use the microphone in spectacular or musically interesting ways, please share!

For now, I’ll focus my attention on Dawn Shadforth, a British filmmaker who directed Minogue’s “2 Hearts“ and ”Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” and tends to work with female solo artists. Shadforth’s interesting artistic background as a sculptor and digital artist informs her style, which often explores tensions between the liberated female body and the rigid choreography she is expected to perform as a music video subject. For more on the director, I highly recommend checking out the episode about her work from the Mirrorball miniseries, which focused on emerging music video directors and ran on Channel 4 in Great Britain during the late 1990s.

What’s more, Shadforth is one of those rare directors who, apart from occasional documentary work, prefers directing music videos and has little interest moving into commercials and features because she likes working with musicians. Given her track record, I’d wager to say that she likes working with female musicians, particularly glamourous pop stars and electronic artists. Click on the names and enjoy, darlings!
