Me hablaban.

Goblet Portraits 1977

ArtistsinAuction

The work of Zeke Berman demonstrates a truly unique eye in the world of photography. We are truly grateful to have such a talented artist on board, partaking in our upcoming auction.

Berman has honed his craft over the last 35 years, producing singular, studio-based photographs that reflect his long-standing interest in visual cognition and optics.

His work has evolved much over the years but always explores an intersection between sculpture, photography and drawing.

From the outset Berman received strong critical acclaim. His work has been collected, published and exhibited in galleries and museums such as MoMA, The Metropolitan, The Whitney, and Art Institute of Chicago. He has been featured in the first New Photography Exhibition at MoMA and has received multiple awards, including the Guggenheim, NEA and NYFA Arts Fellowships.

In the beginning

As a kid, Berman loved sculpture. He attended the High School of Music and Art and studied sculpture at the Philadelphia College of Art. He only backed into photography after graduating. To date he approaches photography as a studio based art and his sculptural training clearly plays an important part in his working process.

During his years in art school, conceptual art and minimalism were a fresh aspect of contemporary art. At that time, Berman began a developing fascination in perception theory - a lifelong interest that involves questions of cognition, optical illusion and the evolution of the senses. The idea that an illusion can change in appearance, right before our eyes, is equally fascinating and inspiring to him.

His study found its way into his working process when he began to experiment with a camera in the studio. Berman’s epiphany came when he discovered a deep mystery and possibility in the transformation of a three-dimensional construction into a two-dimensional photograph.

A cumulative process

The formal range of Berman’s work and his sculptural use of materials is varied, original and idiosyncratic. All his pieces are intricately designed and constructed in his studio.

Berman uses a 4X5 studio view camera to create all his photography. The procedure is an old one that delivers extremely sharp, and clear prints, as well as images that are very realistic in the description of the materials used. The end result is often a photograph designed from a construction but with the appearance of a drawing.

His process is cumulative in nature – he makes photographic sketches constantly as he constructs and reconstructs, creating many, images as the work evolves. Intuition and spontaneity ensue throughout the process. We asked him how he knows when he has finally completed a piece. His answer is that it simply feels complete.

Optical illusion

In the late 1970’s Berman had a direct interest in creating different kinds of illusion. His work from this period clearly demonstrates optical illusion and the transformation of three-dimension into two-dimension.

“Cup with Objects” from 1979 is a great example of 3D/2D play. All the objects fill up the frame up to the edge, however, one slight shift of the camera and the pieces wouldn’t work together.

Cup with Objects

“Web,” a piece from the late 80’s contains an actual spider web. It is a very linear, abstract work, and one that clearly depicts the flow from drawing to sculpture to photography. In fact, much of his work from this time period was very linear in nature.

Web

Later pieces demonstrate the evolution and progression in his photography.

Take for example “Shoe and Tire,” a 1993 commission piece for Progressive Corporation, an auto insurance company. The company CEO is an avid art collector and commissioned Berman to create a suite of still life’s around which the company’s Annual Report was designed. He won several design awards for this work.

Shoe and Tire

“Heart,” created in 1995 was commissioned by graphic designer Mark Schwartz for his daughter who was born on Valentine’s day.

Heart

Although Berman rarely photographs people, “Standing Stack” from 1997 was made at a time when he wished to bring more human presence into his work.

Standing Stack

Berman lives and works in NYC. He now works mostly in color, a new turn in his evolving body of work.

My mum and I bought tickets for the Tim Burton Exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. We are going on December 21st. It’s going to be a great day.

I attended the Harry Potter Exhibition at the Boston Museum of Science on October 25th. I cried three times it was so amazing. It was my favorite memory of 2009. Both of my parents came with me (most of my friends are too “cool” for Harry Potter) and we really bonded among all of the magic wands and costumes.

Now if only I could talk my parents into giving me some cash to go to The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter in Orlando this Spring. Well, I can dream can’t I?

The desire and need to preserve artifacts has predated our existence. Man has communicated by tellin

The desire and need to preserve artifacts has predated our existence. Man has communicated by telling stories, through saving bits and pieces of history, by communicating through pictures or memories. Some call it nostalgia, others call it living in hyper-reality. Museums, arts and culture have always played a vital role in societies. In many ways they define and shape the personality of civilizations and give meaning to our existence. They represent our past and present and point towards our future.

In the current digital age one can access museum collections online, take virtual tours, look at archives and search for almost anything and everything. Now Guggenheim, MoMa, Louvre, MFA etc. are just a click away. Online advertising and publicity has helped many museums attract visitors and generate revenue. Where famous museums get their share of active publicity and advertising both online and in the real world, we rarely hear about museums like “The National Museum of Iraq” in Baghdad.

Such museums lose their identity unless someone steps forward to preserve the past. The Iraqi Museum represents the rich, vibrant culture of Iraq. A place that documents it’s history and showcases artifacts from the various civilizations that lived there. One would imagine that such a place would gather a great many visitors but sadly that is not the case. CNN officials state that the museum “houses some of ancient Mesopotamia’s rarest artifacts, but what is even harder to find at Iraq’s National Museum are visitors. “

Google and the U.S. government have teamed up with the museum to work towards showing the world the historic collections present at the museum. Google is said to have taken 14,000 photographs of the artifacts to document the various collections. Yahoo News reports that, “The museum holds artifacts from the Stone Age through the Babylonian, Assyrian and Islamic periods.” Google chief Eric Schimdt visited the National Museum of Iraq today.

Google plans to create a ‘virtual museum’ and showcase these images to the world. The Associated Press states that, “The museum was ransacked in the chaotic aftermath of Saddam Hussein’s ouster in April 2003, and only reopened to visitors early this year. Schmidt, who toured the museum with U.S. Ambassador Christopher Hill on Tuesday, said it was important for the world to see Iraq’s rich heritage and contribution to world culture.” Schmidt in an address to the Iraqi officials stated that “The history of the beginning of — literally — civilization is made right here and is preserved here in this museum…I can think of no better use of our time and our resources than to make the images and ideas from your civilization, from the very beginnings of time, available to billions of people worldwide,” (- The Associated Press).

This seems to be the first of many more positive developments yet to happen in Iraq. By early next year we will be able to witness the rich Iraqi culture online. This step taken by Google holds strategic importance and will help create a positive footprint for Iraq in the future. It’s amazing to see how digital media transforms the world around us and helps us all stay in tune with the Global economy.

Opening yesterday and running through till April 26 next year, Tim Burton is exhibiting a host of drawings, paintings and sketches all of which have been collated throughout his illustrious career. The exhibition takes place at New York’s Museum of Modern Art where further Burton works will be available to purchase. This video gives a fairly in depth behind-the-scenes insight to the way in which the exhibition came about, and what it means to Mr. Burton. If you’re in New York over the period, get down to this one and see how many pieces you can spot that inspired or are inspired by the films of the celebrated director.

It seemed a silly tagline for MoMA’s full-page advertisement in the NYTimes a few weeks back. But considering the exhibitions on the fall program of NYC’s premier venue for modern art, “Plan Accordingly” is the best advice anyone could give you.

MoMA’s two marquee shows, “Bauhaus: Workshops for Modernity, 1919-1933” and “Tim Burton” are each staggering in their own way. They’re also causing mobs in the museum as visitors flock to them. Plan accordingly – try to visit the museum on a weekday.

A drawing of Edward Scissorhands from "Tim Burton"

We all knew “Tim Burton” was going to be special, and despite a general need for editing, it still lives up to those expectations. It is the first exhibition of the director’s non-cinematic work at a major fine arts museum. It is also a retrospective of his major motion pictures – pretty much everything from “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” to “Sweeney Todd” is being screened in one of MoMA’s plush theaters. The journey into the third floor gallery is quite literally a walk into the belly of the monster. The exhibition, with its hundreds of drawings, dozens of sculptures and film props is a journey into the macabre and relentless imagination of Tim Burton. There are a lot of distorted gothic characters on the walls and many of them you’ll recognize (Edward Scissorhands is everywhere). The majority of the drawings come from Burton’s personal sketch books, and as such they are not so much works of fine art as they are a visualized stream of consciousness. It’s hard not to like the Burton show. Sure it could have about a hundred fewer sketches, but ultimately it’s a refreshing and entertaining display of the work of an undeniable (twisted) genius. (Note: there are timed-tickets for the Burton gallery, which can be booked in advance online).

While Burton is cool, the jewel of MoMA’s fall program is unarguably “Bauhaus.” It is a scholarly yet approachable survey of the 20th century’s most influential school of design. Beautifully curated with something for everyone, Bauhaus sandblasts misconceived notions that German design is grey and industrial. Color abounds, particularly in the glistening textiles that adorn the walls. Bauhaus should be slowly savored, and luckily with everyone crammed into Burton, you’ll probably have most of the 6th floor gallery to yourself.

I'd love to sit a stack of Sunday Times on this

Okay, confession time again, folks: I’m an art historian who knew didly-squat about Bauhaus, one of the most important and influential design movements of the modern era. And frankly, I didn’t care to know much more than it happened in Germany and that it was important. Man, was I ever missing out…

MoMA’s fall exhibition Bauhaus: Workshops for Modernity, 1919-1933 sandblasts misconceived notions that German design is gray and industrial. It is a stunning exhibit, beautifully curated and cock-full of stuff to covet (there’s a few textiles I’d love to own as skirts and several pieces of furniture would look smashing in my dream flat). Illustrated books, ceramic pots, paintings, photographs, bookcases, light fixtures, tables, puppets, tea kettles, and chess sets — Bauhaus artists had their fingers in everything, and at least one of everything is on display on the 6th floor of MoMA.

a colorchart study by Paul Klee

Bauhaus was formed in Weimar in 1919 and was the brainchild of architect Walter Gropius who envisioned a school of design that brought the worlds of fine arts and industry into one. It was a Renaissance idea — all branches of the arts working harmoniously together — reborn in the 20th century in an economically devastated Germany. Over the next decade and a half, the Bauhaus would become home to some of the best-known names in 20th century art and design — Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Laszol Moholy-Nagey, to name but a small few. It would relocate twice, once in 1925 to Dessau and again in 1932 to Berlin, before being closed by the Nazi government in 1933. The exhibit is organized along these three periods in Bauhaus’ history, and the changes in leadership over time and place are easily traced through the works on display.

Color and shape abounds in “Bauhaus: Workshops in Modernity”; geometry and color charts are both toys and tools of the artist. Where “Tim Burton” is MoMA’s show for the masses, “Bauhaus” is its exhibition with more academic aims. The curators, Barry Bergdoll and Leah Dickerman, got their hands on objects from the Bauhaus archives that haven’t seen a public venue since they were made. Undoubtedly, Bauhaus is a scholarly show — the catalog costs $75 and features essays from the leading scholars on the school. This is not to say the exhibit requires some sort of background in the history of 20th century art or Germany to be enjoyed. Rather, it manages to be both scholarly and approachable (I think the colored walls help a lot — yes, orange walls in a museum!).

Oskar Schlemmer. Bauhaus Stairway. 1932.

Of all the exhibits on display at MoMA over the fall and winter months, Bauhaus is the shining jewel in the program’s crown. It has been called “one of those exhibits that comes along in a rare while,” and indeed it feels like a one-in-a-lifetime-landmark-kind-of-show. Bauhaus should be slowly savored, and luckily with everyone crammed into Burton, you’ll probably have most of the 6th floor gallery to yourself. So get going and tell a friend to meet you in the Bauhaus.

(Cupid's true colors)

“One person’s craziness is another person’s reality,” iconic director Tim Burton once said. And if you happen to find yourself in MoMA’s fall/winter exhibit “Tim Burton,” you’ll discover Burton’s reality is pretty crazy.

“Tim Burton” is a ground-breaking and staggering exhibit. Ground-breaking because it’s the first time a major fine arts museum is exhibiting Burton’s non-cinematic work — the first time a Hollywood A-list director is being elevated to the status of fine artist. Staggering because there are so many doodles and drawings to peruse. There are hundreds of parts and their sum is a weighty and intimate look into the relentless imagination of one our generation’s best-loved filmmakers.

NYTimes critic Ken Johnson clearly doesn’t believe a museum like MoMA should be using gallery space on an artist like Tim Burton… because Burton isn’t a graphic artist, he’s a filmmaker. Leave him in the theaters, is essentially Johnson’s message. “To be a popular Hollywood moviemaker and to be an interesting fine artist in today’s terms are very different propositions” he writes, “and it’s no knock on Mr. Burton that he’s not great at both. Nobody is that good.” Johnson had some excellent points in his review — indeed, the exhibition could have done with about a hundred fewer drawings (I believe there are upwards of 400 hundred) — but to call it a “letdown” means he had the wrong expectations.

The majority of the works are cultivated from Burton’s personal sketchbooks and private collection. The reality is, these hundreds of drawings, doodles and cartoons were never meant for public display. With this in mind, they are not so much works of fine art as they are a visualized stream of consciousness.

If you’ve ever seen a Burton film — which unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen at least 3 — then you’re already familiar with his gothic and distorted figures. Proportions are stretched and shrunk, edges are sharp and humour is black.

It’s hard in this economic climate not to look at an exhibit like “Tim Burton” without questioning MoMA’s integrity. Museums have cut their operating budgets, endowments and donations are down. But before “Tim Burton” even opened, MoMA had sold out of its first printing of the exhibition’s catalog. Lines have already been forming round the block of people waiting to pay the $20 admissions fee to the museum. It’s the jackpot exhibit every museum hopes for.

But regardless about how you feel about MoMA and Burton and fine art, “Tim Burton” is a special. Sure we can go over the exhibit’s shortcomings. But I think that’s just silly. MoMA should be praised for having the balls to weather the naysayers that thought mounting such an exhibit was contrary to its mission. And let’s be honest, the greatest measure of the success of an exhibit is its popularity. The number of people flocking to the 3rd floor are testament enough — “Tim Burton” is brilliant.
