I guess that I’ve been focusing on the job market for the time because I simply don’t ha

I guess that I’ve been focusing on the job market for the time because I simply don’t have one. Even with a great resume, education and more, I can’t even get a bite from the beloved WalMart. Why are we told that things are looking brighter on the economy when the truth is evident to the people (real not media realized) that this is just bunk? I do have a few freelance gigs and I am trying to find more but…

Now, ‘they’ are telling us that you can have a ‘great’ job even without a traditional 4 year degree. But, beware! there is still special training required or years of experience, or knowing the right person, and then…

Looky here:
-Air Traffic Controllers: $117,200 – You still need FAA training and probably having military training is not a bad idea. Remember you might even be a hero helper when a particular pilot is used to find water.

- Industrial Production Managers: $77,670 – OK, when was the last time these folks did not need some form of education for these positions even if it was from the hiring company

- First-Line Police and Detective Supervisors: $69,300 – First how long are you on the beat dodging bullets and taking garbage from the public. Oh, it helps if you have some form of criminal justice training for better chances of promotion right?

- Funeral Director: $49,620 – Bring out your dead, bring out your dead… Not much pay for a job that requires state approved training and certification and the ability to deal with grieving family members and stressful planning for the inevitable future event.

- Police and Sheriff Patrol Officers: $47,460 – The stepping stone (be ready to be really stepped on) to the supervisor job above. It still has internal training if you pass the entrance tests. High stress and danger.

- Advertising Sales Agents: $42,750 – Is this income real in the present economy. I think if you don’t have some kind of sales or marketing training under you belt this is a joke. Most are now commission driven and how long did this level take to achieve?

- Real Estate Brokers and Sales Agents: $39,760 (the highest 10% earned more than $111,500) – In this market/economy? You still need to get a state license (training is required or at least needed). You need the right connections, location, and schmoozing abaility!

- Rounding out the rest of the list are occupational/physical therapist aids and assistants. Notice, aids and assistants, not the actual therapists. Even the assistants and aids need some form of training and can’t just walk into the facility and start lifting and hauling people about. The actual therapists need a full blown degree for this of course.

So, when you think about it, you still need training and some kind of certification, license or Associates degree to do these jobs. This is the trick here. YOU STILL NEED SOME EDUCATION of some form to make the grade here. Why no try to land a job while going to school and then look for the ones that are requiring the education that have real pay? The jobs listed here are needed, yes, but the way they are presented may give false impressions as to what is actually required to get them.

HIRE ME!

On Monday, Technorati released the first installment of its report on the 2009 State of the Blogosphere, complete with highlights shared by CEO Richard Jalichandra at BlogWorld in Las Vegas. In addition to supplying the blogosphere with the latest statistics concerning blogger demographics, the report raises many questions as to whether blogging can actually become a viable and primary source of income for those willing to emerge themselves within their work.

Jalichandra’s address can be viewed below.

With blogging being considered more a part of the media than ever before and corporate brands taking a dive into the blogosphere, what time better than the present for a blogger to capitalize on their work? Additionally, if nothing else, the groundswell has taught us that transparency appeals to readers and participants in social media, and blogs are notorious for being as open and transparent as they come.

Unfortunately, this leads to even more questions. How long can we place our trust in bloggers who are monetizing their writing? With 40% of current blogs making revenue with display ads, we begin to see the ethical dilemma of bloggers being influenced by their corporate sponsors. Will these blogs remain transparent and unbiased after money enters the picture?

For now, it remains to be seen how this rise in blog monetezation will affect the blogosphere as a whole, but one thing is for sure – it is more apparent to me now than every before why the newspaper I previously worked for kept their ad sales department and their news department on opposite sides of the building. Although we can always claim ethical conduct, a firm separation of the revenue source and the transparent blog content may be the only way to keep blogs as transparent and desirable as they currently seem to be.

This time it’s surveys. I can go out and register for FREE to get on these lists of surveys. Some pay a little at a time and some trick you into thinking it’s a survey only to find it a way to get you to buy, buy, buy. Why should anyone have to pay to see the same list of survey groups that they can get for FREE? What is even worse is the fact that some groups charge YOU to see this free information. For example…

We’ll Give You A Software That Will Automatically Fill Out Surveys For You Allowing You To Complete More Surveys Per Hour Which Means You’ll Be Making Even More Money!

An “Unlimited Access” membership to the xxxx Site normally costs $64.95…

But I’m going to take the risk off you completely by letting you join today as a full member for only $2.95. If you decide to stay a member we will charge you a monthly membership fee of $29.95 after 7 days. This will grant you unlimited access to xxxxs.

Bonus Timer – If you order before the timer expires you’re guaranteed the following bonus offer. Afte

So let’s see. 2.95 for 7days and then BAAAANNNGGG! 29.95 per month after that time. Who is really making money here? Most likely not you. So what do you think about this ?
Now for a twist. Here is a survey site that pays ( yes low amounts but it builds) and you can have others come in under you so there is income from their survey taking…Best of all it cost nothing to join EVER! http://preview.tinyurl.com/yga3738

This new semester has presented me with new ideas of how web television works. After my successful research presentation at BEA in April, my research has been guided towards the pedagogical sense of web television. Not just in how to teach web television production, but also how to make our students media literate about television’s co-existence on the Internet. The week that just passed offered events that have opened great teaching examples.

I always predictably start the story the same way: several years ago, a group of very talented and creative guys made a web tv show called We Need Girlfriends. After the completion of their series, CBS and Sony were curious as to how the show would do on traditional television. Without going into to many repeat details, the guys are still rewriting the pilot for CBS. Anyway, in the time since, thousands of web television shows have been produced by hundreds of creators ranging from small independent production companies to major corporations. Shows like The Guild and Dorm Life encouraged the small creator to create independent content and web channels like Crackle showed how big corporations like Sony were beginning to understand the frontier. Interesting hybrid shows and one-off specials like Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog became fun projects for creatives during times of industry unrest (in Dr. Horrible’s case, it was the writer’s strike). YouTube and Blip.tv started offering easy advertising plans to their creators for money to be made.

But what about companies that are still trying to grasp the new territory of web television? What of them? Some television channels and their content are helplessly attached to the traditional medium and are exclusive to television only. This week showed an interesting development of monetizing content in an online world. It all started at 9:50pm on Sunday night.

Sunday night is when Kanye West grabbed the mic from Taylor Swift at the VMAs. That’s MTV’s Video Music Awards, the show that no one has talked about in years was the most talked about show all week. A show helplessly attached to the television broadcast. Between Kanye’s rudeness, Lady Gaga’s wierdness, Pink’s trapezeness, there was much to talk about, but only Kanye’s act became viral. Within one hour of Kanye’s video-bomb of Taylor Swift’s award, there was nearly 300,000 tweets and thousands Facebook status updates about it. At 10:08pm, MTV.com had a copy of the clip online and at 10:10, so did YouTube and AOL. But who had the clips the next day? Only MTV. Exclusively.

One of my students in my Intro to New Media course asked me who regulates the internet if the government doesn’t. I asked it back to the class and they were able to parse through the information and realize that corporations had control over the content online. The bigger the corporation, the more control. When it comes to YouTube (Google owned) and MTV (Viacom owned) you’re looking at a pretty big control system.

I push my students to ask questions about the content they are watching and reading. I encourage them to be skeptics with a dash of cynicism in hopes they will become media literate by the end of the semester. I began the questioning of this event with a question on how shows generate revenue. The class discussed three types of television programs encouraging a type of modern revenue system. The first is the traditional type of television show that intends on keeping the show on traditional broadcast and cablecast outlets; how do they make money? The answer easily found was product placement and shows like The Apprentice and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition are basically 44 minute entertainment commercials (entermercials?). Also, shows like 30 Rock and the dearly missed Arrested Development [take note of where AD lives now] would insert product placement in a very smart way to make the show even more enjoyable.

Then there are shows that encourage viewers to explore online (or even online at the same time as the show’s broadcast on television) additional content. Television shows like Scrubs and The Office offer additional programming online in both supplemental and original form. And the third type of television is exclusive web-based television. [I'll be leaving hybrid shows like Tosh.0 for another discussion.] I’ve discussed (and created a course) based on this type of television. The web-television product of the independent is easily studied and in many cases, you can even contact the creator and ask them what their intentions were for monetizing their content. Figuring out how web-television is monetized within a bigger corporation is tougher to figure out and in many cases we are left to speculate on our own.

When I asked the class what they felt about Kanye’s outburst and greedy mic grab, more than half the students already felt the notion that it may have been staged. MTV stage an event? What would give anyone that idea? Maybe we should ask Eminem. Remember, this is a channel that perfected the “Scripted Reality” show. What was different about the West/Swift event on Sunday and Bruno’s butt in Eminem’s face from a few months ago was that Taylor Swift was most definitely not in on this event even if Kanye could have been. And no one is talking either way.

What becomes interesting is the forceful removal of the clip from ANY other outlet. If you want to see the video, you must see it at MTV.com. And you MUST endure an advertisement to see it. What we are potentially looking at is a potential future plan for MTV Networks: create “most talked-about moments” and restrict those “moments” to your site and add an unavoidable advertisement to the clip. The question is there to be asked. And I asked Shelly Palmer of MediaBytes who opened a dialogue about whether it matters if MTV keeps the clip off YouTube and owns the exclusive viewing. I asked him if my skeptical thought is plausible and his response was:

My sources at Viacom say their strategy worked perfectly. Traffic to MTV.com is huge and bloggers are taking down dead links to YT content and linking to the clip on mtv.com. The question people are asking is, “Why doesn’t Viacom get it?” Wow, is that the wrong question. The question should be, “In 2009, can you make money with exclusive content that is highly sought after by conveniently packaging it with appropriate metadata and attempting to control access?” If the answer is yes, then Viacom really “gets it.” If the answer is no, well, you know the rest.

I think the answer is yes. I think Viacom does get it. MTV since its birth almost 30 years ago has always understood culture and audiences and formed how the audience receives television. This might just be their plan. We won’t really know until the next event when suspiciously another “talked-about moment” causes 300,000 tweets and Viacom funnels the viewers once again. If that happens, the next question will be: How many times can they pull that off without losing the trust of the audience?

I asked the students about the idea of staged moments and monetizing after the fact online and they gave me a very interesting response: As long as it is good and entertaining and enjoyable, they will still watch it no matter how unreal it may be.

That’s a strategy to explore.

http://ow.ly/lp5K If Arianna is Right The Current Efforts to Create A Paid Content Option Will Fail

http://ow.ly/lp5K If Arianna is Right The Current Efforts to Create A Paid Content Option Will Fail

Ah, well, Arianna is probably correct in saying consumer habits have changed and that the barely hidden effort underway to consolidate media into a sort of pay-for-content union will fail.

It is hard to work out the economics of any effort top monetize a Web operation.

My own musing is that the only way a paid option will work is if it relates to all Web content, rewarding the originators of content according to a highly complex formula determined by a CSPAN-like panel. Uncompensated content would be paid for by a Web wide charge required of all ISPs. In other words, Roadrunner (my ISP) would charge me so much a year and that money would go into a pool to reward ALL uncompensated content on the Web.

The complex formula would reward The New York Times and its paid reporters vastly more than it would reward an aggregator or a blogger who opines on the news and runs excerpts of it. Static information sites such as theological or philosophical archives would be rewarded at a different rate than sites in these fields which had a good deal of original content, daily updates and so forth.

My premise is that everything will ultimately be done online. Some things will support themselves with ads. Some things with fees. The areas that are not adequately compensated at present — the blogosphere, the news providers, Huffington Post writers like me — would receive from the global pool.

Clearly this ISP related micro-payment model would need to weight things like traffic. inbound links and so forth, somewhat in the way Google creates its iffy but important page rank. We need something universal, intelligible and fair.

I see no other way to proceed.

Today I heard about 11 folks that have gone the way of suicide or at least attempt it after having some kind of connection to reality TV. Most interesting! Why is this so pushed into the background? It just can’t be how can this be real? I just don’t understand how these folks can do this without a script!

I mean, trying to do something in the spotlight without a script or at least a director well….can be hazardous to your health ( the success of the show) and can be a rather terminal end to your career.

We have yet another series of new ‘reality’ TV programs coming up this Fall and they are all just as wacky and MINDLESS as the others. Oh yeah, I forgot that now it will be in digital with the best quality video and sound and maybe even in HD. Isn’t technology grand? Now we can see stupidity and mindless drabble clearer than before. Big wooopeee!

Ideas:

Contestants that don’t make the grade have a chance to beat Simon with that ‘X’ in front of him. Points are given for a new program called ‘Smack Back’.

Castaways on Survivor are really cast away on a real desert island with 1gal of water, no food, and no shelter. NO film crews or staff. They are left alone ( one person only) for 2 weeks. The crew comes back to see what really happens.

The Nanny is repeatedly attacked by her young charges. No mercy shown.

All ‘reality’ shows – scripts are lost, power goes out, grips go on strike.

Big Brother – Poor Connie must become the housemaid because the cleaning crews walk out because of a mold problem.

The Bachelor – All the gals gang up on the bachelor, hog tie him and toss him into the trash. They then hijack the limo and demand to be driven to Rodeo Drive at the expense of the show for a shopping spree.

What would YOU like to see?

The traditional free business model entailed providing a few free products that were bundled with ad

The traditional free business model entailed providing a few free products that were bundled with advertisements which would generate further sales. The free goods would be used as samples to bring in a larger customer base who were interested in the product. These products were viewed with scepticism by customers, after all, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Is there?

Before Google, advertising on the net mainly consisted of web banners. A web banner is an advertisement embedded in web page that diverts traffic to another website when the viewer clicks through. But Google has revolutionised website marketing by placing small text advertisements next to search results on its search engine. These advertisements are well targeted since they appear only when a specific search request is sent. Viewers are also likely to click through on these ads since they were trying to find information on the search subject from the outset. Google now makes billions of dollars providing a free search engine service to the public but charging companies for the small ads that appear after most searches.

Google has a quasi-monopoly in this kind of advertising and the free business model cannot provide enough revenue streams to the growing number of firms who have adopted it. Internet firms have had to get a lot smarter about the way in which they do business. Chris Anderson tells Bloomberg:

A new variant if the model is the ‘Freemium’ model, free-plus-premium. In this model, rather than giving away just a small percentage of their products, firms are giving away 80-90 percent of their products and charging for the few premium products that they provide.

Because the marginal cost of digital products is close to zero, the fee on premium products can easily compensate for the free products provided to the majority of customers. We can see this model taken up by many internet based firms; Flickr, AVG Antivirus Free and Hotmail are free but Flickr Pro, AVG Antivirus Pro and Hotmail Plus are available to subscribers for a fee. The money they make on these few products is enough to finance the total costs of the firm.

Social networks face a more difficult challenge. Unlike Google they cannot paste Google ads all over their site for fear of driving away users. MySpace did this and has yet to recover. So far Facebook has been sure to tread carefully. They have started placing a few targeted ads within the site but will have to find other monetization processes to enhance this income steam. As The Economist pointed out this week:

Yet some experts point out that although social networks have captured the popular imagination, the managers running them face a delicate balancing act. They need to reconcile a desire to drive up membership as fast as possible—which increases the value of a network to both existing and potential members—with the need to experiment with ways of raising money to fund long-term growth. If they push too hard for revenue in the short term, they might drive away users, undermining a network. Leave it too late to monetize and the business could collapse.

Despite the appeal of advertising golf clubs to users with “Golf” within their interests or activities, only a small amount of marketing resources are allocated towards social networking sites.

It would seem that most social networks have feasible long term financial forecasts, and no one believes that the likes of Facebook are going to fall into bankruptcy yet. On the other hand, Twitter, a micro-blogging social network, has yet to find a monetizing solution. The Economist continues:

What about Twitter? Embedding advertisements in “tweets”, short text messages that can be up to 140 characters long, is unlikely to appeal to users. A better bet would be for the firm to charge corporate users for premium services. For example, it could pocket a fee from businesses for verifying their Twitter accounts, so that users following their postings would know the firms’ tweets are genuine. It could also develop a statistical toolkit that measures the effectiveness of tweets in generating sales.

Indeed. Again it seems a “Freemium” business model is the way forward.

Another company with a free business model which desperately needs monetizing is YouTube. The largely successful site is still making large losses. Of course YouTube would like to find a way to charge for advertising on its videos, but this is very disruptive to its viewers and a better monetization process needs to be sought. However, when a successful process is finally implemented, Google can expect to reap large financial rewards from its YouTube subsidiary.

The marginal cost of a digital lunch is almost zero and free is the 21stcentury business model. Bon appétit.

A day of fine wine, exceptionally hot heat, a stubborn sick cat, and of course, exhaustion.

Wine in the summer?

The tasting I led to today was at a very nice wine shop in a very posh neighborhood right next to where my cousins live. Unfortunately, the store was pretty small, and they asked me to set up shop, (wine buckets, ice, crystal glasses, wine menus, the works) outside. I wasn’t happy, but there didn’t seem to be another option. I could have left early. I could have called my manager. I could have been a bitch. But I was good. I may have heat stroke, but I’m good. And again, wrong shoe choice! I never want to stand up again!

Recommendations for the weekend: Yarden Chardonnay 2006 (oaky mature layered gorgeous awesomeness); Gamla Sauvignon Blanc 2008 (crisp dry fruity).

Listen to your vet!

My cat who I thought was on the mend is most decidedly not. Folks, if your vet asks you for a stool sample, provide him with one, tout de suite! The bad bowels stopped. So I thought he was fine. Then my sister and I noticed he wasn’t quite himself, took to sleeping in the bathtub, not eating as much. Then, I took in the sample. Turns out, he might have had a fever all week. Two kinds of bacteria or parasites or something icky like that! I feel like a bad pet owner. And the antibiotic pills are a nightmare. He hates them more than you can hate anything, I think. We’re talking scratches all over the arms all week long. We deserve it though.

Blog Monetizing

So, I’ve been giving some thought to creating a new blog, a good blog, a professional blog, all for the new year, my new age, my new decade…and monetize it. My views regarding sales have always been rather negative. I don’t want to sell things to people who have no interest in them. No way, no how. Online though, everything is so passive. Many sites have ads, and we never notice them. I mean, you buy a newspaper, and there are ads there. Doesn’t mean you don’t read the news, enjoy the funnies, and dive into the crossword. Sometimes ads are helpful. And if I can choose the ads. If I believe in the product. Then, why not?

My Strengths

It’s really hard to make money in Israel. Ha! It’s hard to make money anywhere these days. And I am trying, as always, to get a good sense of my strengths, realistically speaking. Sure, I was a good pianist, sang wonderfully in choir, and I can write a great press release. But what do I realistically devote time to? Writing about myself, my views, things that interest me. And that kind of journalism/novel writing doesn’t exist on a real “bankable” plane. My novel is largely autobiographical. The journalism I have done was all human interest. The few essays, short stories, etc, that I have completed, and completed well, were spin offs of what I knew.

You write who you are

Is it wrong? No. I think it makes sense. All writers write best when they write what they know. And the person we know best is ourselves. It explains common themes and characters in the works of the same author. It explains a journalistic subdivision (a finance writer doesn’t stop and occasionally write theatre reviews). We write who we are.

And I love to blog.

So, if you have any advice out there, please bring it on. I’ve found a ton of articles on how to monetize and tips and blogs on blogging, etc. But a helping hand to weed out the crud would be wonderful.

Great weekend folks! Wish me luck with editing the book…or rather…battling the demons…as I now understand this task to be.
